Listening to our Community

In Term 3 2018, Brisbane Catholic Education will ask our community of students, parents and staff for their thoughts, opinions and ideas about the organisation via three separate surveys. These surveys will be administered during a month-long survey window from Friday 20 July 2018 to Monday 20 August 2018.

Surveys inform the Vision Beyond 2020 Project

Brisbane Catholic Education's mission to teach, challenge and transform involves many partners. Consulting with key stakeholders ensure their views are considered as we shape the future of Brisbane Catholic Education. The aim of these surveys is to help schools and system leaders better understand the views and experiences of the key members of the community: students, parents and staff. The surveys will provide information on what is being done well and where there are opportunities for improvement. Surveying every two years (from 2018) will provide valuable information to help:

• plan for the future, as part of school and system improvement

• understand the experiences and expectations of parents

• learn more about students’ experiences of school life and their wellbeing

• better support staff across our schools and offices

• measure progress.

RELIGIOUS LIFE OF THE COLLEGE

Lord, make me an instrument of Your peace.

Where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is

injury, pardon;

where there is doubt, faith;

where there is despair, hope;

where there is darkness, light;

where there is sadness, joy.

O, Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be

consoled as to console;

to be understood as to understand;

to be loved as to love;

For it is in giving that we receive;

it is in pardoning that we are pardoned;

it is in dying that we are born again to eternal life.

Year 9 Reflection Day

Congratulations to Year 9 students and Pastoral Care teachers who enjoyed their Reflection Day on Wednesday.

The experience of Reflection Days in Year 8 and 9 and the three day retreats in Year 11 and 12 are fondly remembered for many years afterwards as evidenced in the various events we’ve had as we’ve celebrated our 50th Anniversary Year so far.

As a teacher it is a privilege and a treat to observe our facilitator, Mr Michael Fitzpatrick, at work with our students. With his unique style of engaging young people, they are immediately interested out of curiosity and, as the day progresses, they become engrossed in the real purpose of the day. It’s that of bringing them to reflect on where they are at in themselves, how their relationships are going, issues within their cohort and identifying and naming some of the negative ones. What needs to change? And in the consideration of all of this what is the Jesus message? With humour, patience, great music, fun and laughter the students learn about respect for each other, the liberation of forgiveness and the power of contrition and the simple joy of being your own person.

Powerful by anyone’s measure things .

Year 11 Retreat

Year 11s now know which Retreat venue they will attend from 18-20 July. Any queries please contact me. Emails have been sent to parents via EdSmart, these can also be accessed via the Parent Portal (under Permission Slips). Students attending the Outlook retreat have been sent an additional medical form that is required by the venue.

Sunday Connect Mass

The invitation for Parish School Sunday Connect Mass for Year 10 students and their families and teachers on 24 June has been sent electronically in the past three weeks. It is hoped that as many students as possible will be able to attend. This is an excellent opportunity to get to meet other members of Burleigh Parish beyond the school environment.

Families Back on Track

Well done to the senior students and thank you to staff who attended Families Back on Track on Wednesday afternoon. This outreach allows students to share their time with some disadvantaged children and families; playing all kinds of games, doing craft work, enjoying a sausage sizzle, milk shakes and ice cream.

Year 9 Reflection Day gave students the opportunity to mix with others of the opposite sex, think about the qualities we truly respect within the grade along with the people who display these and to apologise for our wrong doings to others.

The day –which was led by the one and only Michael Fitzpatrick - began with finding a partner of the opposite sex with who we weren’t familiar. Although challenging for some, the majority of our cohort rose up to the occasion and had no trouble in finding a partner. To warm up to our partners, we played a game of Jockey up, Jockey down which was quite the experience!

As the day went on the activities became more meaningful. Some of these included dancing, reflecting on what faith really is, sharing your opinions on certain questions and a select group elaborating on why their answer was what it was.

This all led to the final activity, personally my favourite. Every student had to think of a person they admired or respected for one of their qualities or habits. It amazed me how we all united over this activity. Everyone who was in front of the microphone was seen as equal, new friendships developed, broken friendships were restored and the simple little things some students do every day were recognised. As a year level, we became one again.

Year 9 Reflection Day was a great success this year because of our dedicated teachers, the presenter and us, the Year 9 cohort, for stepping up, together, united.

QUT HIGH SCHOOL STEM INTERNSHIP

Young STEM interns relish a working holiday

While their peers were dreaming of Easter eggs over the last school holidays, 46 of Queensland’s brightest Year 12 students were dreaming up solutions to real world problems during STEM internships at QUT.

The annual QUT High School STEM Internships program is an intensive week that gets teenagers out of the classrooms and into real world research.

It utilises QUT’s world-class research facilities at the Institute of Health and Biomedical Innovation (IHBI) at Kelvin Grove, Australian Centre for Robotic Vision, Institute of Future Environments and the Faculty of Engineering and Science Facility at Gardens Point, as well as the Queensland Institute of Medical Research at Herston.

The focus is Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), including health and environmental challenges facing today’s world.

QUT STEM teacher-in-residence, Patricia Hosking, said just 46 high schoolers from over 150 applicants were selected to assist QUT researchers.

“Each student is assigned to one of our already-established research groups where they are involved in projects ranging from migraine and infectious diseases research to inland tsunamis, exoplanets, robotic vision and designer drugs” she said.

“During the application process students had to describe the contribution they hoped to one day make to STEM research – and that’s really the point of this program. Students access very advanced laboratories and technology to experience cutting edge research and inspire them to forge a career in scientific research that will benefit humanity”.

During the program, students were not asked what they wanted to do when they grew up, but rather, what problems do you want to solve? The Speed Talks Breakfast keynote speaker, Naomi

Paxton, won the 2018 CSIRO Young Alumni Scholarship for Physics and shared messages from her first lecture when she was a student. “Your first job probably doesn’t even exist yet”. Professor Les Dawes, lead academic for the Environmental Engineering placement agrees. “30 years ago, I never thought I’d be doing what I’m doing now”.

Gayathri worked alongside researchers at QIMR who aim to develop a chlamydial vaccine. She is interested in STEM careers as it is the “most exciting field out there, it’s never slow or boring, it’s just really fast paced and really interesting”

Many students said talking to the researchers and alumni throughout the week revealed they had varied paths to their current jobs and hadn’t necessarily decided to study their current field straight out of school.

The young interns will return to QUT on May 30 for a research presentation evening to share their new knowledge.

The QUT High School STEM Internships program is fully funded by QUT. All participants are also inducted into the QUT STEM scholars program, which includes access to the STEM scholars’ virtual Facebook hub, and invitations to exclusive STEM education events and activities. Updates on all things STEM for Schools can be found in our Facebook group #STEMis4me. Successful applicants for Vice Chancellor STEM Camp which is held from 23 to 28 September 2018 include Luke Fraser, Conall Crowley and Will Galvin. Congratulations to Matilda for an exemplary presentation with her team on research undertaken in the field of Collision Avoidance for Unmanned Aircraft.

At the conclusion of the preliminary series, we’re excited to report that all of our Junior A, Intermediate and Senior teams have a chance to make the finals series! Teams on a majority of wins will progress automatically, and teams on at least two wins may be chosen in a wildcard selection.

The Junior B competition is now a special novice experience for Year 7 and 8 students who are new to debating. They will see another two debates next term to complete a season of six debates, with no official finals series. Our enthusiastic pool of seventeen Year 7/8 students, comprising four teams, should be congratulated on their honourable representation of the College throughout this experience. They’ve been competitive in every debate, with adjudications almost exclusively on one-point margins, and eight wins from fifteen debates collectively. Well done!

Janie-Marie BurgessDebating Coordinator

Debating has provided us with a unique, enjoyable and rewarding opportunity that we would love to continue in future years.

Being around amazing people has made the time practicing, speaking and preparing an amusing and enjoyable time for everyone. At first, we were a bit unsure about what we got ourselves into, as Year 7 students new to high school and still settling in. But as the journey began we have both had an incredible experience. We are now extremely confident when it comes to speaking in front of people and creating speeches. We keep up with latest news and current affairs as most debate topics are about our modern-day society. The courage and support we get from not only our coaches, but from opposing teams, our teammates and even ourselves helps and guides us during debates. We all learn how to how to co-operate and share ideas to create good arguments. And finally, we have taught ourselves how to stand up in front of an audience with dot points and make up a whole conversation off the top of our head. Debating has been an incomparable experience and we will take many things out of it.

Porsha Cush and Mikayla HopkinsYear 7 Participants and Insiders

My team’s journey so far in debating has not only been fun and challenging but has given us the chance to develop our speaking skills, on-the-spot thinking and teamwork.

As seniors we are required to produce an 8-minute speech in under an hour, which gives us very little time to write out the speech, so during our preparation time we talk and talk and talk as a team to build our case. There is a certain feeling when you know you’ve poured hard work into your case and thought deeply about the topic, and you manage to pull off a win. Though it isn’t all about winning, it is more than that, it is about working as a team of speakers to put across a point. Invaluable.

Jackson LakeYear 11 Participant and Insider

Debating thus far has been a greatly beneficial experience that I am glad to be participating in.

Not only has it helped me to improve my persuasive writing techniques, public speaking and ability to think on the spot; but it has also furthered my ability to articulate my thoughts on a level that is both persuasive and concise.

Harrison DeanYear 10 Participant and Insider

My debating experiences benefitted me as I was very quiet and did not speak much.

But debating has made me feel more open. Sometimes you say stuff that you have never said before. Debating is a fun experience and everyone should give it a go.

Cassandra Grioli Year 8 Participant and Insider

My favourite part of debating so far has been in the short-prep room, as it is quite fun coming up with arguments to prepare and putting them into words in a short time limit.

BIG DAY OUT AT UQ

Wow! What a great day out!!! I had so much fun up at the University of Queensland for the Big Day Out excursion, it was a blast.

All the speakers we heard were excellent, they have really shown us all the different possibilities there are for us when leaving school in regards to ICT and technology. Although, I am still not a hundred percent sure on what I want to do when I leave school, but at least now I know my options and I am planning for my future ahead. We had guest speakers from high end companies such as Technology One, which is Australia’s largest tech company. To be totally honest, my favourite speaker was definitely from Adobe, he was the funniest out of all of them. To Mr Hamilton and Mrs Faulks; our awesome teachers that went up to Brisbane with us, thank you so much for taking out your teaching time to help us with our future career paths. Without you, we would have never experienced such an awesome day. Finally, to Mrs Mathers who organised this for us, thank you so much, you are incredible.

Yesterday afternoon saw 30 girls from Marymount College and St Michael’s College come together to play a friendly Rugby 7’s match.

To be completely honest with you, it really had nothing to do with rugby at all. It had to do with providing teenage girls an opportunity to mix with various age groups, abilities, friendship groups and different schools, using rugby as the vechicle.

Marymount girls were amazing not just scoring tries, smashing tackles but also in welcoming other developing rugby players to a safe place where everyone was there for one reason, to develop more confidence in the physical game of rugby 7s.

Thank you to the staff who cheered the girls on, they really felt like rock stars, as many are still very new and shy to the sport of rugby.

Sport reveals character, it shapes the person and provides a place where people can come together. Yesterday, Marymount College provided this opportunity and our girls were wonderful hosts and this was evident from the thank you speeches right down to a group photo. If you see them please congratulate them.

In a one-sided affair, the Makos led 22-6 at the break and carried on with the job to run out 40-12 victors.

Tries were scored by: Xavier Coates (VCapt), Josiah Glogoski, Paddy O’Brien, Jack Hamlet, Cole Geyer (Capt), Henry Bryant and Riley Kiwan. Oliver Singh had a good evening with the boot, kicking 6 from 7 conversions.

The Mako of the Match votes were very evenly spread between: Geyer, Singh, Max Mallory, Jack Davidson, Lachlan Box (1), Hamlet, Matt Kubatka (2), Coates, Bryant, Glogoski, O’Brien and Charlie (Callum) Murray (3).

Well done to Box who stepped up this week to cover injuries.

With only 2 weeks left until we head to Charters Towers the boys have a very busy agenda including their Pre-Confro Parent/Player Brunch this Sunday, the Grand Final next Wednesday and the Makos Skills Day next Sunday. On top of all of that they have their End of Semester Exams which we wish them well in. School work and education are always PRIORITY ONE in our program.

The Confraternity Team was presented to the College on Thursday at the sports assembly. Congratulations to all those selected. We feel for those who trained so hard but just missed out - they have however pushed the others for selection making our team as strong as it is.

Up the Makos!!!
