Special operations 1/3 conducts evacuation exercise By Sgt. W.M. Alexander

To answer unconventional threats to global U.S. secu- rity interests, the Defense Department in 1981 began placing prominent emphasis On special operations forces.

The Marine Corps has since evaluated its own capabilities and found it could perform a broad spectrutn of special op- erations in a maritime envi- ronment, without creating new organizations or dupli- cating the special forces of alu

Among these special opera- tions capabilities are the Non- combatant Evacuation Opera- tion and the Tactical Recov- ery of Aircraft and Personnel missions.

They flew their ary Brigade, but also in the

skills it takes to pick up a rifle and close with the enemy.

All of this relates to their past.

Immediately after their 1942 conception, the MAG was deployed to an island called Efate, in the New He- brides Island chain establish- ing a forward airstrip. The American forces in the Pacific were on the move, and MAG- 24 helped lead the way with close air support, bombing and reconnaissance. Their initial combat tour proved short, however, as they were sent back to Santa Anna, Calif., to reorganize and re- group.

They returned to the Pacific Theater six months later, and found their combat squadrons slugging it out over the skies of Midway, Johnston and Palmyra Islands in early 1943. By January of 1944, elements of the MAG had participated in action at Ba- niki in the Russel Chain and Bouganville. Construction crews of MAG-24 were respon- sible for moving forward and

establishing an airstrip at New Piva.

It was there that the "win- gers" earned some salt and starch and established a rep- utation of valor protecting the airstrip against relentless attacks by the Japanese.

After New Piva was secured and turned over to the New Zealanders, elements of MAG-24 moved on to New Guinea for staging and preparations for the Allied liberation of the Phillippines. In January of 1945 the for- ward echelon of the group went ashore and under enemy fire, constructed and put an airfield into operation.

There, as part of the 5th Air Force, they flew missions throughout the Phillippines during the allied invasion. They joined MAG-32 and MAG-12 to form a unit called Marine Aircraft Group Zam- boanga in the Southern end of the Philippines Islands.

While the fighting drew to a close in August of that year, the Marines got a final shot at the Japanese by dropping propaganda leaflets on the beaten Japanese Imperial- ists.

Following the end of WW II, the MAG operated for two years in Guam and moved on to MCAS Cherry Point, N.C., where they spent 20 years. These were not inactive years, however, as they trained pi- lots and ground crews for service in Korea and Vietnam and served as a back-up force during the Cuban Missile Crisis.

In April, 1968, MAG-24 re- turned home to Hawaii, a new, reorganized and better equipped fighting force. In their time away they had acquired jet aircraft and added helicopter squadrons to their roles. Today, the warriors of MAG-

24 have the distinction of being theonly air element in the Marine Corps to stand up with a ground unit and form a standing Marine Air/ Ground Task Force.

The well-dressed fighter pilot

Things have changed since the days when John Wayne hopped in the seat of an F-4U Corsair single- engine fighter and filmed the "Flying Leathernecks." Back then a pilot was pictured in a worn leather jacket with a white scarf and picture of his girl on the instrument panel.

Today a pilot is the master of a vehicle capable of flying twice as fast as sound and can travel almost higher than the eye can detect. In the cockpit of a "fast mover"- a pilot is subject to forces that, if he were unrestrained and unprotected, would throw him shout and leave him unconscious.

Every flying squadron has a section of Marines charged with preparing and maintaining the equipment that keeps a pilot in his seat and functioning.

"We're the cutting edge when an airplane doesn't work and the pilot makes the decision to get out," said SSgt. Timothy Smith, who works in the flight equipment section for Marine Fighter Attack Squadron-212. "Our gear has to he good. The life of a pilot depends on it."

Decked out from top to bottom, the gear a fighter dons

weighs an average of 50 pounds. From a tailor-made helmet to flame - resistant flight suit the gear is designed to be light, easily accessible and durable. In the cockpit of an F'/A-18 Hornet, a pilot can be subjected to forces seven times the force of gravity. That can make 10

pounds feel like over 70, and a steep climb can force all the blood in an aviators body to his feet.

There's a lot of technology to make sure the gear will do its job.

"There are three important considerations of flight gear," said Capt. H.S. Graham, a fighter pilot with VMFA-212, as he suited up for a flight in one of the squadron's new birds. "It, of course.has to be functional. It has to be durable. It has to be lightweight."

By functional, it means the gear has to work under the stress of super-sonic flight, and perform the mission it is designed for. A pilot's gear list begins with an Integrated Torso Harness that is similar to the "H" harness worn by a grunt. To it can he attached everything a pilot needs to survive for 24 hours after going down. The harness hooks to the seat, which contains the parachute in the case of ejection, and basically keeps the pilot in place in the plane.

Under the harness, pilots wear an Anti-G Suit, which helps counter the effects of the stress of flight. Similar to the chaps a cowboy weara, they wrap around the waist and fasten down the legs, just above the ankles. This plugs into the jet itself, and fills with air when the plane puts a pilot through diving We. This keeps blood from pooling in the lower extremities.

"Without this (the Anti-G Suit) you would black out when coming out of a dive," said Capt. Graham. "All of the blood would be forced out of your brain."

Toping it all of is a helmet that is fitted to the particular pilot's head. It is constructed to absorb the force of ejections, while being light enough to remain comfortable for prolonged periods. To it attaches the oxygen mask and communication devices.

"If a helmet was heavy aid awkward.it would force your head around when y u pull G's," said Capt. Graham. "It has been imp ved since I began flying 11 years ago. The helmet weighs less and offers better vision that it did, and they are measured and fit to the individual's head."

As important as the big items are, every little item attached to or put in the pockets of the vest become crucial to a pilot if he should go down. There are flares, a water bottle, hand-held radio and everything else a

pilot may need to stay alive and signal for help. "When you have a couple dozen pilots and only two

Marines keeping their gear in order,we stay pretty busy," said SSgt. Smith. "Although we never fly, a little hit of us goes up every time a pilot leaves the runway."

Recon Marines gear up for SCUBA Story and photo. Sy Sgt. W.M. Alexander

Nearly 40 Marines and sail- ors from Co. A, 3rd Reconnais- sance Battalion, completed Feb. 10 what seemed to some the supreme test of their aquatic skills and mental bearing.

It was the first of two rig- orous pre-SCUBA training courses the company con- ducts each year. The course is designed to test the mettle of prospective divers before they encounter the real thing at the U.S. Navy SCUBA School at Pearl Harbor.

While adventurous fun. chasers associate SCUBA diving with optimum Ha-

Jacques Cousteau never did it like this

walnut leisure, it Was any- thing but fun for the men who dared to attempt the gut- wrenching feats of this week- long course.

Their days began at 6 a.m. with 1,500-yard swims in the bay, which, by the end of the week, crept to 2,000 yards. After nearly two hours of swimming in zero-visibility water, it was time for mental gymnastics with subjects like

dive tables, dive physics, physiology and medicine, and SCUBA theory.

Cpl. Plere Burck, a Co. A, 3rd Flacon fire team leader, comes up for a breath during the bobbing exercise.

Their afternoons were spent at the station swimming pool, where they brought to life the subjects they picked up in the classroom. Two of the more demanding exercises the men performed were crossovers and bobbing.

During crossovers, the men had to find their way hack and forth across the width of the 12-foot-deep pool carrying weighty Twin 80 Oxygen Tanks on their backs. The twin 80 bottles, as they are called, were not used for ox- ygen, however. Snorkels were to suffice.

But because it was manda- tory that divers swim under- water when the command "crossover" was given, and touching the sides of the pool was a carnal sin, the only thing taking these divers through the 45-minute ordeal was their ability to relax in the water:

The exercise became a liv- ing nightmare to those who had not' yet mastered this ability. Their sometimes des- perate attempts to regroup at the edge of the pool were met consistently by aggressive instructors determined to see them complete the exercise

Marines from the Surveil- lance and Target Acquisition Platoon were flown to assess the situation. Part of A Co. then linked up with the downed pilots and evacuees to take them to an extract land- ing zone, which had been secured earlier by the rest of the company. Thus, the com- pany was able to transport the evacuees back to ship without compromising their position in what may have been hostile territory.

successfully. "Somehow they get it in

their heads that they're in trouble and no amount of talking can convince them otherwise," said commanding officer Capt. Kent Bradford. "They're really not in trouble, but they think they are. So this is why we're out here: to see which ones are comfort- able in the water."

That was u ditto for I stSgt. Dennis Delay, the company's first sergeant. The 40- year -old also went through the course. lie knew first-hand what these men struggled with and offered it steady flow of en- couragement. "Don't you give up on me!" he yelled to a Marine nearly overcome by the water, "Hang tough now! You can do it, buddy!"

But like his commanding officer, 1 stSgt. Delay looked beyond these immediate in- conveniences.

"There are no walls out in the ocean," he said. "Just you and your buddy. That's why things are done this way. You've got to get control of yourself, learn to relax and you're good to go."

Bobbing woo to be the most taxing of all the pool exer- cises.

With twin 80 bottles on their backs, divers had to push off the bottom of the pool, bob ,heir heads out of the water

"We learned an awful lot," said l,tCol. R.L. Stevens, 1/ 3 commanding officer. "This was the first time in my career that I've seen a battalion conduct a NE0 in a real built- up area. I would hope that other units try this and also that opportunities remain open for us to do this regu- larly, although we have no plans for that. We did have some things we thought we could improve on, hut overall I thought it went well."

This time, divers had to descend to the bottom of the pool, take off a fin, push off

the floor to come up for one breath, descend again to take off the other fin, come up for a breath, and with one fin on each hand, bob for two more minutes.

3/3's STA Platoon: `not just trigger- pullers'

Story and photo by Cpl. William H. Foster Camp S.D. Butler

Editor's note: The follow- ing events took place during 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment's recent unit de- ployment.

CENTRAL TRAINING AREA;Okinawa-"We're a small unit; people really don't understand us. We're usually attached to a company, and act as the company com- mander's own reconnaissance unit. We're not just trigger- pullers."

These statements by Sgt. Kenneth B. Temple, chief scout for Surveillance and Target Acquisition Platoon, 3/3, describe a situation commonly faced by STA Marines.

"STA Bandits" are widely known, but little understood. Their reputation has always been larger than their num- bers.

"We rate 21 people, with eight scout/sniper teams. Right now, with people on temporary duty and leave, we're down to 12," Sgt. Temple said.

But, Sgt. Temple added, small numbers don't neces- sarily mean a negative im- pact on their performance.

"We operate in two-man teams," he said. "One man is a scout who observes the target and spots the impact of the sniper's rounds. He also provides security for the team with his M-16."

Hefting a 12.75-pound sniper rifle, Sgt. Temple said, "The sniper carries this: the M40A1. It's accurate to a thousand yards, and is rated as one of the top three rifles in the world for this busi- ness."

He explained why scouts and snipers are so important to each other.

"You have to hold your eye not more than three inches away from the scope for it to shoot dead on."

Putting the 7.62mm rifle to the test, the target seems to leap through the crystal clear glass. But as the round fires, the view through the scope suddenly turns black. The shooter is unable to watch the impact of his round.

"The recoil changes the position of the shooter's eye in relation to the scope," Sgt. Temple said. "The scout can actually watch the smoke trail from the round, and watch it strike the target. He gives the sniper any necessary adjustments."

The scout-sniper team is also interchangeable.

"We train to do each other's jobs," LCpI. Running Crane, a STA Platoon scout-sniper, said. "I've been a scout for a year and a half now. I may not hold the billet, but I can do everything the snipers do. Scouts know the weapon. If the sniper is hurt, the mission still has priority. You know each other's dope, and can shoot as accurately as the other.

"But this is a lot more observation than sniping," he said. "We'll go out from a company or battalion we're assigned to, and act as a listening post, or scout ahead. Our job is to make sure the

Honolulu Furniture Factory: A Treasure Trove If you thought Oahu's best-

kept secret was the location of Sacred Falls, you're on the wrong track. Honolulu Furni- ture Factory is our island's hidden treasure-trove.

The first-time visitor to the Honolulu Furniture Factory is often quite surprised at what

he sees - not shabbily made imports or poor imitations of brand-name merchandise, but the real thing. Rock-solid, quality merchandise.

Owners Tom and Karen Zirbe are deservedly proud of their store's reputation. "We feature a wide selection of

long, hard day at the office, in the classroom, driving the bus or wherever you work, and you're headed home. H-1 is a beast - you've been crawling bumper-to-bumper for miles now - and all you cam think of is getting home to ease into your backyard pool.

"Pool!?"you interrupt. "You must be kidding. Who can afford a pool in Hawaii? Cer- tainly not me!"

Guess again. Mike Kornaze- wich, Don Shideler and Monte Morris of Wonderpool in Kai- lua have a pleasant surprise for you. "We offer affordable pools in Hawaii because there is a great need," explains Kornazewich. "Most people don't even consider having a pool because of the cost. Once they find out what we have to offer, their whole attitude changes."

"There is a gap in the swim- ming pool business here," he continues. "No one offers what we do. There is no one building low-cost, quality, well-constructed above- ground or vinyl-lined in- ground pools in Hawaii.."

The advantage of above- ground pools is obvious - little or no digging is involved - but what about vinyl-lined in-ground pools? Instead of a plaster finish, a one-piece vinyl liner is hung to custom- fit the interior and render it watertight. The cost is lower, with the end result a beautiful, smooth pool that resists algae growth.

In addition to above-ground and vinyl-lined in-ground pools, Wonderpool also spe- cializes in custom-made pool liners.

ness in January of 1988. For information on how you

high-quality furniture at below-Mainland prices," boasts Tom Zirbes. "And I guarantee that my everyday prices are lower than my com- petitors' advertised sale prices."

"If Sears has a particular glass cabinet on sale for, say, $450," he continues, "they'll discount it to $295 for an advertised sale. That's still $100 more than you'll pay for it here."

In business for 13 years, Honolulu Furniture Factory is much more than just a new- furniture store. Two large

warehouses house a choice selection of antique furniture from Hawaii and the Main- land, as well as an impressive variety of interesting and affordable collectibles. And they can help with renova- tions and restorations as well.

"We offer the only complete service in Hawaii,

Zirbes. "We reupholster, refin- ish and restore fine furniture. That's why we're called Oahu's one-stop specialty shop. We can install new formica in your kitchen or bathroom, and we custom- build to customers' specifica-

Service Is Emphasized At Floyd's How many times have you

bought an appliance from a smiling salesman who enthu- siastically assures you his store stands behind its mer- chandise? You leave with your purchase, feeling satisfied and confident. Then some- thing goes wrong. You return to the store, only to hear: "The manufacturer no longer makes that particular model. We can't help you."

Floyd's Typewriter Sales and Service doesn't operate that way. Sales and service manager Roy Lavallee is em- phatic. "We carry a complete line of accessories and parts for products sold, regardless

of whether the models are still currently in production, he states. "Too many retailers ignore a previously handled product after it has been dis- continued. That happens very frequently in this fast-moving electronic age."

In the typewriter business for 16 years, Floyd's features Brother and Smith Corona portable electronic typewri- ters and word-processors and is a factory-appointed warran- ty station for these products, no matter where they are purchased.

"Our emphasis is on provid- ing quality service with a fast turn-around time, at reason-

able rates," Lavallee says. "And we offer the best war- ranty in the industry - 90 days."

With several convenient drop-off locations to handle typewriter repairs or routine general servicing, and a close personal relationship between store personnel and custom- ers. Lavallee believes that Floyd's "is a company that knows its product, can prop- erly demonstrate all features and is willing to provide after- purchase training and ser- vice."

You can find Floyd's Type- writer Sales and Service locat- ed at 870 Kapahulu Avenue, or call them at 732-6619.

Windward residents can also travel in style, with or without musical accompani- ment. Enchanted Travel has been serving the community for 9 years, offering expert travel assistance in a congen- ial atmosphere. "We're big enough to do a good job," says owner and manager Helen Baverstock, "and small enough to care."

Baverstock and her friendly staff - assistant manager

Laura Gabriel and sales asso- ciate Mary O'Connor - are particularly knowledgeable about cruises. "We can ar- range individual or group travel," Baverstock affirms.

We arrange free ticket deliv- ery to your home or office, and there is never a commission or fee charged to the traveler."

Now, Chic Apparel For Large Ladies

"The bigger the better" rn. hold true in some cases, but not when it comes to chic apparel for the larger woman. Catalog shopping - long the only alternative for women unable to find clothing in their sizes in local retail stores - offers little in the way of stylish choices for fashion- conscious size His and up.

Plenty of Style, located in the Enchanted Lake Shen- ping Center in Kailua, V, -4

created to fill this void. "We want to offer the larger woman a stylish alternative to mail-order shopping," says owner Janine Henry. Henry, co-owner Arthur Baverstock and store manager Kathy Piimauna opened the shop six months ago.

"We carry larger-sized wom- en's clothing in an affordable price range, Henry explai ,

from career dresses for toe businesswoman, to comfort- able cottons for retirees and housewives, to elegant eve- ning wear. If you are frustrat- ed with catalog shopping, see us for fashionable alterna- tives."

Plenty of Style also offers a variety of attractive accesso- ries, including silk scarves, silk and ceramic jewelry from Hong Kong and mesh even. bags. Lingerie lovers will delight in the elegant array of undergarments and night- wear, and the active woman will find a wide selection of casual wear, swimsuits and cover-ups.

"There's so much 'same- ness' in large sizes," says Henry. "Especially in depart- ment stores, We want to fill a basic need for Oahu's tar - woman. They deserve style as much as their thinner friends."

Spa Fitness Centers Remain Healthy With all the brouhaha in the

news recently about the clos- ing of International Fitness, Ken E. Gibson, general man- age of Spa Fitness Center in Pearl City, wants you to know his club is still very much in business,

"After 15 years, the Spa Fitness Centers are still going - and growing - strong, " Gibson reveals. "We have offered the people of Hawaii the very beet facilities for the money spent - more than any of our competitors."

A quick glance at the yellow pages or advertising sections of inca I newspapers confirms

Portable Spas Are Popular

No, Blue Champagne is not the latest offering from the Gallo Brothers. It's a pool and spa business; a 20-year-old Hawaii firm that sells, in. stalls and services a complete line of portable alms.

The hydrotherapeutic bene- fits of spa use - using water in the treatment of certain diseases - have become in- creasingly recognized in Ha- waii over the past several years, and the folks at Blue Champagne Pool and Spa feel this is a trend likely to con tinue. "People are becoming more aware of the usefulness, versatility and affordability of spas," says office manager Mary L Hughes.

Educating the public about the benefits of spa ownership has been one of the goals of Blue Champagne, and the firm regularly participates in the Better Home Show.

"People are beginning t, realize what Ft traMble' seta l," explained . "It's a self -contained t. Basically all the (-bent needs is a flat, level surface to set it on and an electrical outlet of 110 volts. The nice thing about a portable is that if you don't like where it is situated, you can drain it out and move it wherever you like."

Blue Champagne carries the Watkins Hot Spring Spa line, and has sizes ranging from the popular two-person spa all the way up to the large eight-person models.

The Thrill Of Candy Stores

Is there anything more en- joyable t h an taking a kid into a candy store and watching his eyes get big with wonder- ment at all he surveys? Those of us old enough to remember the old-fashioned candy stores of our youth ran recall the gleaming glass cases be- hind which rested an array of sweets to boggle the mind. It was almost more than a kid could take. Flow to decide among the goodies?

Unfortunately, the majority of those candy stores passed with the influx of modern supermarkets, w hose array of treats come already bagged, labeled and priced. But for those of us lucky enough to live on the Windward side, a quick trip down memory lane is just around the corner.

Tucked into Temple Valley Shopping Center is Goodie Korner, where a hint of the past remains. Offering a wide sportment of cracked seed, "2(cent" candy, candy Isle, cookies, chips, shave ice and other food items, the shop is a kid's paradise.

Owner Diane Leong loves her work. "I started the brad- nese five years ago becaueb 1

wanted something of my own, " she explains. "I really like the people who come in, They get excited when they see en many products - sweet things. They re like kids, no matter their age."

There's no good substitute for experience and reputation when it comes to selecting a health club. The corporate offices of Spa Fitness Center are located in the Rocky Mountain area, in Utah. Owners Bob Rice and Ken Melby have been in the busi- ness for over 30 years.

"Fitness has been around ftwever, but it got its biggest push during the '60e when President Kennedy had his Council of Physical Fitness in full swing," explains Gibson, "and they found out what rotten shape Americans were

lected for the Marine Corps Rifle and Pistol Team. If selected, they will compete during the summer in various regional National Rifle Asso- ciation sponsored matches.

Competitors this year fired the ITT Course for scores and awards, unlike last year when it was introduced to give the shooters exposure to this par- ticular match style.

The ITT Course starts at the 500-yard line with teams com- posed of four shooters, a coach, and a team captain, firing on a six target front.

Each shooter receives 25 rounds of ammunition at the 500, 300, and 200-yard lines. Shooters have 50 seconds in which to shoot the 25 rounds in the prone, sitting and kneeling positions, firing on echo silhouette and dog targets.

Hits in the black only from each yard line receive scores while bonus points are awarded for the number of targets with six or more hits in the black.

The course, which originat- ed at Quantico, was tested

SCUBA/from A-3 classroom and studied until 7 p.m.

"Many people thin k SCUBA diving in Hawaii is recreational," said Capt. Bradford. "What they don't know is combat diving in- volves extended periods in the water - sometimes two hours. And even the relatively warm water here in Hawaii can make you hypothermic if you're in long enough."

Contributing to the diffi- culty of making tactical inser- tions (after swimming surface and subsurface for up to 4,000 yards), is having to wear SCUBA gear, 782 gear, carry- ing a rifle, and, for some, water-proof radio gear.

"You're talking about wear- ing a whole lot of equipment, finning substantial distances in the cold, in zero visibility

where you can't even see your wrist watch; and all the while your imagination runs wild thinking of the things with big teeth around you in the water," said Capt. Bradford. "And that's just the training environment.

"In combat, you'd be con- cerned about who's on the beach, whether it's guarded or not, enemy patrol craft, or worst of all, whether the enemy has attack divers on patrol. You can also get shot in the water or while you're trying to get out of the water."

Roughly a third of 3rd Rec- on's 85 personnel are SCUBA divers. Pre-SCUBA students must be first-class PFTers and strong first-class swim- mers.

Since quotas are limited, divers have to compete for the best ranking to get them.

HM2 Brenden McMullen, a corpsman with Co. A, takes a breather during the crossovers exercise.

here last year because of the smaller range size and to see what problems would arise, according to CWO-4 Driggers.

"The match went quite well. As always, new shooters were a bit unfamiliar with the routine because of the varia- tions in firing commands and pit procedures, so competitors had to learn a new type of

scoring and pit procedures," said CWO-4 Driggers. "But the competitors adapted well and superb scores were shot."

Twelve awards - two gold, four silver, one distinguished certificate, and five bronze individual awards - were presented for the rifle compe- tition. The individual high rifle shooter will receive a Remington 720 rifle.

Sy Capt. A. D. Firestone LegaIServicee Center

"Don't worry," you are told, "you ran write it off."

This is probably the most used, but least understood, statement made during tax season. There are certain ex- penses that the IRS will allow a taxpayer to deduct from his annual income.

Obviously, the smaller the taxable income, the smaller the sting on April 15. For military members, there are some expenses which are unique to the armed forces.

One item to note at the outset is that all military- related expenses must be declared under the miscella- neous deduction section of Schedule A (Form 1040). These items are subject to a two-percent adjusted gross income limitation. That is, the total of all miscellaneous deductions are deductible only to the extent they exceed two percent of the taxpayer's adjusted gross income.

MISCELLANEOUS DEDUCTIONS

Active duty uniforms

Your camouflage utilities are the first item to consider. Because local regulations prohibit their use off base, the entire uniform may be deducted. The same is not true for our Army brethren who wear a similar uniform on and off base. Therefore, if you have one set of utili- ties pressed per week (at $4 per cleaning), there is a $208 deduction you should con- sider. Any uniforms that may be worn off-base may not be deducted.

Accessories

Insignia and other devices may be deducted. This would include a sword but not a

dress cover. The basic ra- tionale is that dress uniforms (including charlies) may he worn off base and therefore are suitable civilian clothing. Never mind the fact that you will probably not wear your dress blues to the tractor pull at Aloha Stadium.

What is required is a good deal of patience and a large shoe box to funnel receipts. Now, if you belong to Land- ing Support Company, and if you have kept the receipts for the little red patches sewn on your commies, rest assured that the IRS will not taws- lion the deduction.

Professional dues

Lest you forget that you are a professional, know that all materials you purchase out

01 your own pocket to assist you in your job may be deducted. So, while you could deduct a subscription to Leatherneck magazine, you might run into trouble ex- plaining a deduction for a personal firearms collection.

Regrettably, monies ex- pended for after-work ther- apy at the E club may not be deducted even though military matters are often dis- cussed.

Educational espenSeS

This topic was discussed in the last issue and it is mentioned again only as a reminder that these expenses must be channeled into the miscellaneous deductions category. Remember that if the expenses are incurred in an effort to maintain profi- ciency or meet the continu- ing educational requirements of n job, they are deductible. If the education leads to a new profession or job, they are not deductible.

Cpl. Montgomery P. Hooper, a sniper with STA Plt 3/3, tires the M4OAI sniper rifle at Range 2 in the Central Training Area.

STA/from A-4 company is not surprised."

Ninety percent of our missions are intelligence-re- lated," Sgt. Temple said. "We go out on a company's flanks, or scout ahead of them. The information we send hack to the company commander is passed on to the battalion.

"A lot of times when we're assigned to a unit, they may not know our exact capabili- ties. They ask whist We can

do for them. We tell them to look for had guys, spot enemy snipers, gather intel- ligence, and take out high- value targets.

"I really enjoy that," Sgt. Temple added. "Walking in, telling someone what you can do for them, then pulling it off.

"I guess the best way to describe us is, we're the eyes, ears and trigger finger of the battalion commander. Usu- ally in that order."

CAMP HANSEN - Third Marine Regiment took the coveted 3rd Marine Division Commanding General's Cup in intramural athletics for the second consecutive year with a 17-point lead over their nearest competitors, 4th Bat- talion, 12th Marines.

Major General Norman H. Smith, commanding general, Ill Marine Expeditionary

Force/3rd MarDiv., presented the 1988 CO's Cup to the victorious Hawaii Marines during 11 ceremony here, Feb. 1.

The I 'Ws Cup is awarded to the unit which accumulates the most tournament points in seven events held through- out the year. In each event a first place finish is worth 20 points, a second 15, third 12, fourth 10, fifth seven, sixth five, seventh three, eighth two, and one to any remain- ing participants.

While commands perma- nently assigned on Okinawa accure points under the same unit colors all year, battalions in the Unit Deployment Pro- gram (U10) pass their totals on to their replacements.

A year ago, 2nd Rn., 3rd Marines put the regiment on the scoreboard by placing sixth in howling. Before rotat- ing, they added another 15 points with a second place finish in soccer.

First Battalion, 3d Marines kept the momentum going by winning the Lord Tengan 1.0k Run, which was new to the list of events. A sixth-place finish in softball was followed by a win in football.

When 3rd Rn., 3rd Marines arrived, they continued the trophy drive, netting 15 points in basketball and an- other five in volleyball. Their victories brought 3d Marines' point total to 85 for the year.

Third Marines' consistency placed them well out of reach

of their closest competitor, 4th Rn., 12th Marines, who fin- ished with 88 points. First Armored Assault Rn. took third with a 52 point total.

The trophy will stay at the unit headquarters until next year, according to MSgt. P.D. Wallace, 9th Marines CO's Cup competition officer.

"Each tournament is a one- weekend event," Wallace said. "They are single elimi- nation tournmanents...do or die. You lose a game and you're out."

Wallace added most smaller units usually put out the word and organize one team. Bat talions have company-or- platoon-level competitions with the winner representing the battalion in tournament play.

"It's good competition and a lot of fun," Wallace said, "especially for the guys who aren't playing varsity sports."

B-Ball champs Hawaii men take third

straight Pacific championship

Story and photos by Cpl. Cohort Duncan Camp S D Butler, Okinawa

Rob Price snatched 15 re- bounds and Troy Den ley tal- lied 26 points to lead Hawaii past the Okinawa A All-stars, 101 -95, and capture the men's FMFPac championship crown here, Feb.10.

The crown is Hawaii's third in a row, and the second for Hawaii coach James McNeil.

Den ley's scoring barrage started with a game-opening three-pointer, followed by teammate Darryl Dyer's hit from beyond the 20-foot range to take an early 6-2 lead.

In the early going it looked as if Hawaii was out to de- stroy the Okinawa A All- Stars. Hawaii's defense and Okinawa's slump shooting built a 16.4 lead, 3:22 into the game.

Okinawa, lead by Merlin Peters' rebounding and Wal- ter Moore's outside shooting, closed the gap to five points midway through the first half.

Hawaii missed on two trips down the floor and had its lead cut to three on Noah Mason's power lay-up. The Hawaii bench immediately called time-out.

"I was kind of upset that we didn't execute on offense and run any play," said Coach McNeil. "If it hadn't been for our hustle and defense, Okin- awa would have beat us."

Robert Johnson got Hawaii on the roll after the time-out with a baseline jumper that Peters blocked, but a goal tending violation made the basket count.

Tight defense crimped Okinawa's shot selections. With eight points from Price and two quick lay-ups from guard Ricky Hinton in the last four minutes, Hawaii was able to carry a 51-43 halftime lead into the locker room.

"We simply couldn't stand up to Hawaii's backline," said Okinawa A All-Star coach Bib Raby. "Each averages 20 points per game and they overpowered us on the boards the same way they did in the first round of tournament play."

Okinawa came off the break on a cold streak not able to get into the game flow. Ha- waii capitalized with fast breaking action that boosted its lead to 17 points at the 14:28 mark.

Okinawa A All-stars didn't let a few missed shots discour-

age them. Allen Cooper started an Okinawa attack keeping the all-stars alive by hitting from inside the key. Then Ron Angevine came off the bench to unload on a scoring rampage.

Angevine sank from the free-throw line, hit a lay-up, scored on two more lay-ups and popped a baseline shot on a pass from Mark Clark tp ouch the score to 80-71 at the 6:38 mark.

Okinawa cut the lead to five points when Peters scored off an Angevine feed. Down the stretch Hawaii built the lead to nine points. Moore sank a three-point bomb only to get fouled on the play try Hawaii's Quentin Freeman. Moore sank the foul shot to tighten the score, but time ran out and

Hawaii posted a 101.95 victo- ry.

"My bench was a valuable factor in the win," said Coach McNeil;'They spent as much time, if not more, on the floor than the starting five."

On the other hand, besides Angevine, the Okinawa A All- Stara "didn't have a strong bench to go to," said Coach Raby. "Denley hurt us too. He's an all-round threat, yet he's a guard that stacks up with the big men. I didn't have anybody to match up against him."

"The key for us was crash- ing the boards and playing defense," said Price. "I just wanted to win this game so I would have something to write home about."

Leading up to the cham- pionship the Okinawa B team eliminated Iwakuni from ac- tion Feb. 8 behind Curtis Davis' 34 points. The same day Okinawa A suffered its

first loss in the championship tournament to Hawaii, 95-90. Johnson scored 25 points for the victory while Ron Robin- son lead Okinawa with 33 points.

In the semifinals Feb.3, Okinawa A topped Okinawa B, 92440. The A All-Stars never trailed, and led by as much as 22 at one point in the game.
