GENERAL INFORMATION

eMajor programs utilize innovative methods to create an accelerated pathway to degree completion. These include program structure, enrollment and student support, built-in room for transfer credit, and credit for prior learning (CPL).

Program Structure The eMajor Collaborative Program structure promotes completion, utilizing eight-week, accelerated courses which allow students to satisfy prerequisites and stack courses during any given term. Courses also have a standard course shell and syllabus, with material chunked into modules. This provides a consistent format for students, requiring less time to learn course navigation. eMajor Single Institution Programs may also elect to offer accelerated courses.

Enrollment and Student Support Enrollment and student support is also available for prospective and current eMajor students. High-touch, customized enrollment support ensures that new or returning students have the tools and support to navigate the admissions and enrollment process, no matter which institution or program they select. Unofficial transcript reviews are available, which allows students to see where previous credit may fit in a new program. When students enroll and begin eMajor courses, they have an array of support available, including a dedicated Student Support Team to provide coaching and assistance throughout the term.

Built-in Room for Transfer Credit The eMajor Collaborative Programs have room in the curriculum for transfer credit and also utilize articulation agreements with other USG and TCSG schools to accept bulk credit for certain programs. The ORGL program, specifically, includes an unarticulated Area F, which can shorten time to degree completion for undecided or change-of-major students.

Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) eMajor Collaborative programs have options for students to receive credit for prior learning by demonstrating learning that has taken place outside of a classroom setting. There are several common assessment methods within the Organizational Leadership (ORGL) and Criminal Justice (CRJU) bachelor degree programs, including a challenge exam, portfolio, or a hybrid combination of both. eMajor single institution programs may also elect to offer CPL.

eMajor Collaborative Programs Financial Model

eMajor Billing Procedures (Single Institution)

The eMajor financail model consists of three cost centers: the administrative institution, the student home institution, and the faculty home institution. Funds from eCore tuition are allocated as follows:

USG eCampus bills the affiliate institution per credit hour based on total institutional eMajor enrollment at the designated eCampus census date. eCampus surveys all partners to gather drop for non-payment dates prior to setting the census date. All drops for non-payment, non-attendance, and withdrawals should be processed before the established census date so that institutions are not billed for these. Additionally all MOWR, 62+ waivers, and TAP students are requested from each institution to adjust/exclude from billing as needed.

The billing process for single institutions is the same as collaborative program process, however the amount to be billed depends on the program and services selected by the affiliate.

Student Engagement and Success

eMajor has a clearly defined process for supporting and assisting students toward full engagement and success in their coursework. This process includes providing students with access to academic resources and online tutoring options.

Professors have the opportunity to report struggling students for the eCampus Student Success Team (SST) to contact and provide resource solutions. Afterwards, the SST members close the loop with professors by providing feedback regarding communication with students in order for them to remain informed and accurately follow up with at-risk students.

eMajor requires a student to fill out a withdrawal survey before withdrawing from the course. This survey is used to gather data on the student’s learning experience, and the SST contacts the student about the withdrawal to provide details and options for an informed decision.

Success Team Call Email eMajor Student

AND

FY 2019 Outreach Activities

Preemptive Call Cycle1-2 weeks prior to the beginning of the semester, welcome and getting started emails are sent, and the SST begins reaching out to students enrolled in a high number of eMajor classes.

Day 3 Not Logged In (NLI) Call CycleOn the 3rd day of the semester, students who have not yet logged in to their classes are contacted via phone and email.

Day 5 Not Logged In (NLI) Call CycleOn the 5th day of the semester, students who have missed the log in deadline and are from schools who typically withdraw for non-attendance are contacted by phone and email.

At-Risk EntriesThroughout the semester, SST members reach out to students who faculty have identified as needing assistance.

Withdrawal Requests Throughout the semester, SST members reach out to students (within two business days) who submit a withdrawal to help the student make an informed decision.

The Student Success Team (SST) reaches out to students by phone for several different reasons:

eMajor Prospective Student Inquiry Support

The Curriculum Analyst provides customized enrollment support to prospective eMajor students. Customized enrollment support includes guidance on institutional requirements and standards, recommendations on best fit institution and/or program, unofficial transcript evaluations, partnerships with on-campus departments, and consistent outreach and consultation throughout the enrollment process.

Overall in FY19, eMajor received 1,091 direct program inquiries from 798 unique prospective students. Additionally, in Spring 2019, USG eMajor implemented a new initiative which expanded eMajor’s support to an additional 894 prospective students, which brings total outreach to 1,692 students. 23% of these students translated into enrollments into various eMajor programs during FY19.

The overall eMajor specific inquiries by program are broken down into the following numbers:

Students often transfer into eMajor degree programs with several hours of transfer credit, which can significantly shorten their route to graduation. The unofficial transcript request is an optional, preliminary step and tool to guide students toward knowing approximately how many credits they would have remaining to complete an eMajor degree, as well as to assist them in selecting the best fit eMajor program and/or institution.

In FY19, eMajor, 239 prospective students took advantage of this new service. This represents approximately 14% of the total 1,692 eMajor inquiries received both directly at USG eCampus and through an eMajor affiliate single institution program. These requests are broken down into the following numbers:

Smarthinking Online Tutoring

The Smarthinking online tutoring service is available to all eCampus students for the duration of the term. Online learning assistance is available in a variety of subjects, including Business, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, Software Applications, Spanish, Writing, and more. Smarthinking tutors, who typically have extensive teaching/tutoring experience, adhere to the Socratic tutoring method.

*All Smarthinking data represents both eCore and eMajor student usage.

• There were 974 users who accessed Smarthinking during FY 2019.

• For FY 2019, there were 4,377 tutoring sessions completed by eCampus students via Smarthinking with 2,449 hours of total usage.

• The greatest amount of time and sessions were generated in the Essay Center during FY 2019, with a total of 1,713 sessions and 1,172 hours.

Tutoring Opportunities

eCampus offers multiple ways to support students seeking additional resources and assistance in their courses. eMajor students gain access to this support through two gateways: Embedded Librarians and Smarthinking, an online tutoring vendor. In addition to these online offerings, collaboration with the 21 eCore partner institutions and their on-campus academic services provides another venue to direct students who desire face-to-face or peer tutoring experiences.

By better integrating the offerings of each of these entities, students arrive at the resource that best serves their needs in a timely and efficient manner. If a student would be better served by another resource, or would benefit from multiple resources, communication between each resource allows for a seamless and supported transition for the student.

With improved understanding of the strengths and abilities of each resource, SST members, tutors, and course instructors direct students to the resources that will provide the most appropriate intervention. Pre-scheduled announcements appearing on course homepages, informative graphics, and a “Free Tutoring” link located on the main toolbar also encourage students to navigate themselves to these resources.

Student Withdrawal Survey

A student submits a withdrawal request by completing a survey. The survey collects information regarding the reasons, factors, and experiences that influenced the decision to submit the request. eCampus contacts the student within 2 business days of this request to provide additional details for an informed decision. A student can cancel the request in this 2-day window. Affiliate institutions may withdraw students administratively, circumventing the withdrawal request, such as at the beginning of the term for non-attendance. eMAJOR OVERVIEW

Collaborative vs. Single Institution Programs

FY 2019 eMajor Degrees

eMajor Collaborative Programs

The University System of Georgia’s eMajor program offers fully online degrees in both collaborative and single institution formats. Degrees offered in a collaborative setting are taught by instructors from multiple USG partner institutions and include students from multiple institutions. Degrees offered in a single institution format are taught by instructors from only one institution and include students from this same institution.

Degrees offered in collaborative programs are taught by instructors from multiple USG institutions and include students from multiple institutions. Students who wish to pursue an eMajor Collaborative Degree must be admitted to an institution that offers the degree.

For collaborative programs, students enroll in their institutional Banner system. Course registrations are then transferred through INGRESS (a USG multi-institutional registration tool) to GoVIEW, the USG learning management system for collaborative programs. This approach allows cross registration from multiple institutions.

Academic oversight of each eMajor degree falls under the collaborative auspices of the faculty of the affiliate institutions. The Provost of each affiliated institution is responsible for appointing a faculty member to the Curriculum Leadership Committee (CLC) annually, and the CLC members demonstrate academic oversight of the program for their institution.

eMajor offered two collaborative programs during FY 2019 with the following affiliate partners:

• Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice (CRJU) Dalton State College, Georgia Southwestern State University, Georgia Highlands College

• Bachelor of Science in Organizational Leadership (ORGL) Atlanta Metropolitan State College, Albany State University, Dalton State College, Fort Valley State University, University of West Georgia

EMAJOR OVERVIEW

eMajor single institution programs are taught by instructors from a single institution and only include students from the same institution. Students who wish to pursue an eMajor Single Institution Degree must be admitted to the institution that offers the degree.

In FY 2019, eMajor supported four single institution programs:

• Associate of Science in Financial Technology (FinTech) - Middle Georgia State University• Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) - Georgia Southwestern State University• Bachelor of Science in Cybersecurity (CYBR) - Kennesaw State University• Bachelor of Science in Nursing (RN to BSN) - Columbus State University

BACHELOR OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION GEORGIA SOUTHWESTERN STATE UNIVERSITY

The BBA degree program is ideal for students who wish to pursue an online Bachelor of Business Administration degree. These are often working professionals, military members, transfer students, or returning students seeking alternative routes to degree completion. Additionally, through GSW’s Prior Learning Assessment program, students are able to earn credits for prior learning and reduce the time it takes to graduate. Ultimately, students can earn the same degree in management, marketing, accounting, or human resource management as traditional, on-campus students.

Faculty credentials must be from a regionally accredited higher education institution. To adhere to accreditation standards, instructional assignments will prioritize the use of full-time faculty from partner institutions. When possible, the number of faculty teaching in collaborative programs should be in proportion to the number of students from their institution participating in the program.

ACADEMIC INFORMATION

Credit for Prior Learning USG eMajor collaborative programs (ORGL and CJ) began offering credit for prior learning options during fall term 2017. During FY19, 12 credit hours were awarded for demonstrated credit for prior learning, as determined via student portfolios and/or challenge exams.

Credit Earned through CPL by Methodology (table)

Portfolio - 3 hoursChallenge Exam - 6 hoursHybrid - 6 hours eMajor collaborative programs (Organizational Leadership and Criminal Justice) have options for students to receive credit for prior learning by demonstrating learning that has taken place outside of a classroom setting. Official CPL options became available through eMajor in Fall 2017; however, these may have been available at the institutional level prior to that time. The eMajor program utilizes several common assessment methods with the Organizational Leadership (ORGL) and Criminal Justice (CJ) bachelor degree programs, including a challenge exam, portfolio, or a hybrid combination of both. eMajor adheres to the Council of Adult and Experiential Learning’s “Ten Standards for Assessing Learning” when assessing and implementing CPL.

Students must be currently enrolled and in good standing at their home institution to attempt credit for prior learning through eMajor. Further, they must be a declared ORGL or CJ major and must not have previously attempted the course. Students must follow institutional guidelines pertaining to maximum number of hours allowed through CPL.

All collaborative program courses are reviewed on an ongoing basis for CPL eligibility through the outlined eMajor course revision process.

Single institution programs follow the CPL procedures of their home institution.

In FY19, there were 62 available CPL options:Organizational Leadership:

Current Innovations

Intelligent Agents Feedback ImprovementTo help provide extrinsic motivation, the IDD team has been working with Intelligent Agents to provide immediate feedback to students. Through internal emails, students automatically receive messages of encouragement when submitting an assignment or completing a quiz. As research continues, this will be an ongoing innovation.

PlayPosit

Rubrics Overhaul

While still in its early stages, PlayPosit provides a quizzing system for all video sources in the learning platform. It takes this quizzing system a step further by providing an interface with the grade book. Students will be able to take video quizzes and receive grades for their quiz attempts.

To better align the grading of rubrics with the point system, rubrics are being overhauled to provide a more realistic grading system. With further feedback, rubrics may be updated to fit each assignment better.

Syllabus Updates

eMajor syllabi are being updated to provide a clear understanding of the significant aspects of the course, to clear redundant and out-of-date information, and to help expedite policy and procedural updates.
