1. SCOPE:Thisdocumentisauserguideforthecode-plugonlyandhowitaffectsthefunctionoftheradio.Itisnotdesignedinanywaytoeithercomplimentorreplacetheusermanualfortheradio.However,thecodeplugdoeschangetheradio’suserinterfaceandIwilltrytodescribethatandmakeitasintuitiveaspossible.Currentlythiscode-plugissetupforuseintheUK.Tothatend,TalkGroups,Channels&ZoneswillbeoptimisedforusewithintheUKbutmayoperateontheworldwidenetworks.ImayaddinalittleotherfunctionalityoutsideoftheUKlateronbutfornowthisisthescope.MostUKDMRrepeatersfollowtheD-MARCrulesfortalk-groupsandthiswillbethedefaultassumption.Howeverwheremoredetailedisavailable,channelswillbeprogrammedtooperaterepeatersasconfiguredbytherepeatergroupsorowners.Anexampleofthisarethesiteslocatedonthe‘South-WestCluster’ThisisasmallnetworkofrepeatersintheSouthwestUKthatareNOTconnectedtotheD-MARCnetworkandonlyuseTG9onslot1forlocaluseandTG950onslot2forSWCnetworkuse.TheyalsouseTG950forroamingacrosstheSWC.Thedatabasecontainschannelsprogrammedforeveryavailabletalkgroupforeveryavailablerepeater.Thisinformationdoeschangehoweverfromtimetotimesoifyouspotsomethingthatneedsupdatingorisincorrectthenpleasedropmeanemail.

4.4TonesandAudibleAlerts:2,3and5-Tonealertshavebeenconfiguredontheradiothateithergoupinpitchordowninpitchdependingonfunction.UpinpitchusuallysignifiesopeningaQSOorsomethingpositive,downinpitchsignifiedacallcomingtoanendoraclosureoraproblemsuchas‘ChannelBusy’.Alongsinglebeepusuallysignifiesawarningofsometypesuchas‘RepeaterWakeFailure’.ThereareotheraudiblealertstosignifyprivatecallsandradioalertsallofwhichmaybemodifiedbytheuserfromwithintheCPSsoftwareandprogramminglead.

5. CHANNELS:ThiscodeplugcontainsacomprehensivelistofUHFanalogueanddigital(DMR)repeatersaswellasafullsetofstandardSimplexfrequenciesforuseonbothFMAnalogueandDMR.Eachchannel/repeaterwherepossibleincludesit’sactualnametomakeiteasiertolocaterelativetoyourcurrentposition.Insomecasesthisisslightlyabbreviatedsoastofitinthedisplay.UsingtheCPSsoftwareandprogramminglead,youcanselectfromthesechannelsandprogrammeZONEStosuityourpersonalrequirements.SeebelowforanexplanationofZONES.Youcanhaveupto16CHANNELSprogrammedforeachZONEandusetheChannelknobonthetopoftheradiotoselectthem.YourchannelwillbeshowninthedisplayalongwiththeZONEcurrentlyselected.YoucanalsousetheUP/DOWNbuttontoscrollthroughchannelsontheradioandthisallowyoutocrossfromonezonetothenext.ThisisparticularlyusefulwhenintheALLUKAnalogueRepeaterZones,effectivelyallowingyoutoscrollthroughGB3AAtoGB3ZZ.


6. ZONES:Youcanhaveupto64ZONESprogrammedonthePD785eachofwhichcancontainupto16CHANNELS.ZonescanbecreatedusingtheHyteraCPSsoftwareandasuitableprogramminglead.InormallyreserveZone1asthe‘localzone’intowhichIloadupmyfavouriterepeaters&simplexchannels.ItispossibletohavemorethanonelocalzoneandinmyowncodeplugIchoosetodothissoIcanoperatefromanalternativelocationwithadifferentsetofrepeaters.AdditionalzonesIhavepre-programmeare:

• UKRoaming–ContainsalloftheUKroaminggroupsacrosstheUK.SwitchbetweenthemasyoumovearoundtheUKtotakeadvantageoftheroamingclusters.

• SIMPLEX–ContainspopularDMRandAnalogueFMsimplexchannelsforpointtopointconversations.

• DVMini–ContainsTG’sthatwillcontrolaDVMinidongleon436MhzallowingyoutochannelswitchbetweenDMRreflectors4400–4403intheUK.

• RepeatersGB7xx(wherexxareaselectionofmyfavouriteDMRrepeaters.I’velaidthechannelsoutthesameforallofthemusingthefollowingformat:

TALKGROUPSTalkgroupsareusedtodifferentiateconversationsonthesametime-slotfromoneanother.Thisusuallydetermineshowmanyrepeatersorwhatnetworkofinter-linkedrepeatersyoutransmitthrough.Youcouldbetransmittingonjustyourlocalrepeaterorthroughanetworkofhundredsorpotentiallyeventhousandsofrepeatersworldwide.It’sclearlygoodpracticetouseandunderstandthisfacilitywiselyandonlyoccupylargenumbersofrepeatersforcalling.Usinguser-activatedtalkgroupstoQSYawayfromthemainonesandoccupylessrepeaterswillbenefitallusersandshouldbeconsideredbestpractice.Eitheruseapre-programmedchannelwithinazonesetupfortheappropriatetalk-grouporselectatalkgroupfromoneofthefollowing:

ROAMING:Whenusingregionaltalk-groupssuchasTG810(SouthWest)roamingmaybeallowedifithasbeenimplemented.Roamingallowsyourradiotoautomaticallyselectthestrongestrepeaterwithinrangeasyoumoveaboutandtransmitthroughallofthemonthenetwork.It’sanincrediblyusefulfeatureactiveonmostregionaltalkgroupsonTimeslot2.MostoftheseBelowisalistofroamingtalkgroupsintheUK.Yourradioissettoautomaticallyroamwhenoneoftheseregionalgroupsisselected.Thisfeaturecanofcoursebeturnedofffromthemenuorbypressingtheappropriatefunctionbuttondescribedabove.

AccessotherregionalTalkGroups.DirectdialwasapreviousfeatureofDMRallowingauseractivatedtalkgrouptocallupadistantrepeateronlocalTG9/Slot1.WiththenewPhoenixnetworktopology,youcannowcallintoaregionorspecialgroupbyselectingtherelevanttalkgroupfromadropdownlistactivatedbypressingtheOrangebutton(TGQA–TalkGroupQuickAccess).AnyoftheTalkgroupsstarting8xxcanbeselectedfromwithinanotherregion.So,ifyou’reinregion810(SouthWest)andyouwanttocallintoregion850(Scotland),presstheorangebutton,scrolldowntoTG850andpressthePTT.YoucannowconnectdirectlytoTG850andstartaQSOorputacallout.

CALLSIGNDATABASE–CONTACTS:Itispossibletoimportthecall-signdatabaseintotheHyteraPD785butwithmemorylimitedto1000contactsnotallofthemcanbestored.I’vemanagedtofindalinkto‘Active’UKcall-signsoverthelastmonth,whichissubstantiallysmallerandassumingyoujustwantthese,thereare600orsowhichwouldeasilyfitintomemory.Theproblemis,evenwiththesourcefileinthecorrectformat:i.e.(MSEXCEL2003)withallfieldsstoredasTEXT,theCPSsoftwarewillonlyseemtoimport56recordsatatimewhichisnotmuchuse.I’venotyetbottomedouttheprecisereasonforthisbutaquicksearchonGoogletellsmeI’mnottheonlyonehavingthisproblemsomycurrentthoughtsarethattheproblemlieswiththeCPSsoftware.Fornow,I’mjustputtinginthecallsignsofmyregularcontactsmanuallythroughtheCPSsoftwaresoasnottoclogitupwithpeopleIdon’tknow.Thishelpstomanagethecontactsfile,whichismoreusefulforpre-programmedtalkgroupsordirect-dialtalkgroups.
