How is solar energy used?

There are several ways of capturing and using the sun's energy, including photovoltaic cells, active solar energy, passive solar energy and concentrating solar power systems.

Active solar energy

Active solar thermal systems use collectors (focusing mirrors and metal plates) to capture the sun's energy. Solar radiation heats up the collectors, which in turn transfer heat to air or water. These systems are frequently used for space heating and water heating.

One solar method of heating water uses glazed or unglazed collectors. The heart of a solar collector is a black absorber (blackened surface) that absorbs solar radiation and converts it into heat. The heat is transferred to a heat-transfer liquid (water, anti-freeze or oil) that flows through tubes on the collectors. This heat is transferred to a heat exchanger to heat water in a storage tank or to be stored for later use.

Passive solar energy

Passive solar heating harnesses natural heat and light from the sun, using basic building elements, such as walls, windows, floors and roofs, to control the amount of the sun's energy that is absorbed or lost in a building. The term "passive" means no additional mechanical equipment is used to heat the air, other than the building elements, and that minimal use is made of pumps or fans to distribute heat.

High efficiency windows, together with insulation and airtight construction, allow passive solar heat to come through and keep the energy inside in the form of heat. Heavy heat-absorbing materials, such as stone floor tiles or extra layers of gypsum wallboard, are incorporated into buildings to collect heat and slowly release it. Sunspaces can also be included into the building design to capture heat.

Concentrating solar power systems

Concentrating solar power devices focus or concentrate the thermal energy of the sun to drive a generator or heat engine. They do so by means of mirrors arranged in a tower, trough or dish configuration.

Power tower systems (also known as "central receiver" systems) use a field of large, flat mirrors to track and reflect sunlight onto a receiver mounted at the top of a tall tower. As the receiver collects heat, this heat is transferred to a fluid (synthetic oil or molten salt) pumped through the receiver. The fluid's heat, reaching about 500°C, is then used to make steam to generate electricity in a conventional steam generator.

Solar trough systems use a series of curved mirrored troughs to focus the sun's energy on a pipe filled with a heat exchange fluid (oil). This fluid is heated to temperatures of about 400°C. The heat is then used to turn a steam generator to generate electricity in a central plant.
