in a bid to expand its network, which currently has more than 375 stores, the rivoli Group recently announced plans for a mega investment on a standalone office facility in dubai.

Furthermore, it's understood that the group is closely eyeing al barsha, among other niche areas, as a potential location for the deluxe office facility, which is expected to visibly reflect the rivoli brand. a decision on this is expected shortly.

looking at the current economic environment, the decision on the facility's location will largely be subject to proximity, cost and social demographics. rivoli's group general manager, abraham Koshy commented: "i

where's the love?

remember when animal abuse and brutality was reported in some dubai communities a few months back- and al barsha hit the billboards with some of the worst cases?

well, it's time to show some love. dubai animal rescue Centre (darC), a dubai-based sanctuary dedicated to the rescue, treatment, care and welfare of lost, abandoned and injured animals, is looking for 20 animal volunteers to help out with an open day.

scheduled for 5th march 2011, it's going to be a fun-filled day when volunteers will spend quality time with a variety of animals.

according to the event organizers, activities planned for the day include shows for the kids, special performances by dubai drums, stand-up comedy, face painting and of course - yummy food and drinks.

attendance at the event will be for a worthy cause, with all funds raised going exclusively towards caring for the animals and raising

awareness about animal rights and welfare.

and to the cynophobics (dog-harmers), don't bother to sign up - there will be dogs running loose in the gardens. to run with them, call now on 050 858 7844 - and start spreading the word about animal care!

welcome to hypersun al barsha. this week, i’m delighted to introduce a brand new section, called ‘shout out loud!’. we literally stop and ask six people about their views on an important everyday topic – and in this issue we ask them about their daily experiences of commuting. as you can imagine, there’s no shortage of comments (!) so turn to page 6 to see what they have to say! note as well that we’ve chosen six people from radically different backgrounds: interesting! i wonder if you share their experiences? meanwhile, if there’s an issue that you want to discuss, or you have an idea for a possible feature, contact me at [email protected] and i’ll make sure to answer you personally.

al Barsha - the safest place to drive!

a recent report by the roads and transport authority (rta) indicated that the number of people killed in road accidents in the emirate has fallen by a third, from 225 in 2009 to 153 in 2010.

rta's measures to improve traffic awareness and infrastructure have proven to be highly effective - especially at spreading awareness of dangerous behaviour. however, there's even better news here in al barsha. Cases of traffic fatalities in the al barsha area have fallen even lower than the rest of the communities in the emirate.

since 2008 when six serious traffic accidents were recorded, the al barsha area has securely maintained a zero traffic fatality streak, from the beginning of 2009.

since the participants are expected to dig in their own pockets for their equipment, clothing and accessories during the climb (and to pay themselves for any training that's necessary before the climb begins), myles recommends early preparation.

is there a criteria? it's not just anyone who has lost a friend or relative to cancer. you simply must have a thirst for adventure and a desire to 'give back'. plus, it's as well to be in at least reasonably good physical shape. let the adventure begin by calling myles on 04 347 6853- there's everything to gain!

Do you regularly commute to your job/school?

Our panel - chosen completely at random!

Oh yes. i regularly commute. six days a week.

yes. i stay in bur dubai and work in Al barsha. so i commute to and from work six days a week.

yes. All the time. i stay in dubai Motor City, so i come here every morning and go back every evening with friends.

No i don't, because i live in al barsha and work in Al barsha. As you can see, i spend most of my time here (in Al barsha).

yes i do.

i live in deira and work with elite Capital in Al barsha. i work five days a week, therefore i always travel to work every morning and back home every evening.

Most of the times it's by the Metro. sometimes on saturday i commute by bus, from satwa to Al barsha.

i always use company transport from home to work. but sometimes, say once a week, i take the Metro.

i have my own car. even when i'm not commuting, i always drive through Al barsha and use it as a hub to connect with the areas around.

i just walk to and from work.

sometimes the Metro, sometimes i take a bus.

i use public transport because i don't have a car yet. Metro is the most convenient method for me, compared to all the others.

i feel the Metro is much more convenient compared to the bus. sometimes, when i'm in a bus, i feel as if i am suffocated. it's always packed.

Well, one of the services is provided for me. but with the Metro, the service is quick, convenient and you will arrive in time, if you plan your journey well.

Private transport is better than public transport when going from Motor City to Moe, especially through Al barsha.

The time that i used the bus service from international City coming here (Moe), it was always a nightmare for me.

because i don't have a car. so i have to use public transport.

i don't have a car. but if i had one, then i wouldn't see myself on the Metro again.

ShOUT OUT lOUd Al bArShA!we’re delighted to introduce a new regular feature, shout out loud! every week, we’ll be asking six al barsha people (from completely different walks of life) for their views on a key current issue. see if you agree with what ‘the people in the street’ have to say.

How much time does it take you to commute?

Are there any difficulties/challenges you experience during your journey?

Have you tried any other mode of transport?

Could any improvements be made to public transport?

it always takes me 30 minutes to travel by the Metro from satwa to Al barsha, and by bus it gets a little longer.

it takes me about 30 minutes to move from home to work. if i am using the Metro, it's not more than 45 minutes.

30 minutes - and that's enough for me!

Five minutes, or less. except sometimes when i have to go the City Centre (shopping mall). i have my own car, so i will drive.

The Metro is fast, compared to the bus. i love the Metro. before the Metro, i used to changes buses before getting to work and it took me a lot of time.

i have to get to the office by 8:30 am every morning and this means i have to leave home before 7:15 am. i always have to catch a connecting bus.

i always work on Fridays after lunch, but i find it so hard to access the Metro on Friday.

Not any, only that sometimes, especially in the morning, it's always a bit crowded. but the Metro itself is ok.

Not any. but you need to be sure of your exact destination when moving through Al barsha, especially by public transport.

Not any right now.

With the bus, you just have to stand at the bus stop, wait for the bus, then you board. but the bus takes a lot of time on the way.

it takes me almost double the time i would have spent had i been using my own car.

i haven't needed to. i only move from satwa to Al barsha.

if the authorities would increase the train intervals on Fridays. For instance, if only the train ran every two or three minutes on Fridays.

i used the bus once, but it's not so easy to connect to the Mall of of the emirates by bus. And it's time consuming.

i have no idea. but i think it's already better than before (before the Metro). This is what my friends always say.

That's one for the RTA, i think!

One time my car broke down so i decided to use public transport. i think it was ok, although not as efficient as the car.

No, but when i have time, i will try.

i really don't know.

My roommate drives, so he sometimes pick me up from work.

Maybe lower the RTA charges. before it was Aed 1.5 to take a bus. Now it's more than that. And it's not easy to find a machine to top up your NOl card.

i tries using private transport companies, but they are not so flexible. you have to follow their schedule, not them following your schedule.

if the RTA could devise an express Metro route/service which doesn't have to stop at every terminal.

“it's obvious that commuting is an issue that people feel passionate about, and want good solutions.."

a race to successFor the KG students at al mawakeb school, al barsha, sports day is one of the best days of the year - and this year's event was no exception. sports day is an action-packed occasion where students, teachers and parents get to participate in a wide range of fun filled activities. at the sound of the school bell ringing, the students, dressed in coloured costumes representing their team, filed into the green fields of the school filled with excitement and anticipation – keen to compete in a number of interactive sports

activities (and basically have a lot of fun!).

school sports day favourites such as water games, pulling balls, sack race, obstacle race, fling toss etc… were all featured and parents were there to watch, play and support their children. the event not only allows students to have fun, it also teaches many important skills and values such as sportsmanship, learning the meaning of responsibility, being a team player, time management, organisational skills and respect for others.

was launched in 1979 in Al Garhoud

Czech republic, and australian paul hanley - genuine stars, both Grand slam doubles champions and number three seeds for the tournament - made special guest appearances. the fun began with prizes being thrown to the audience by Francis, who asked the excited crowd questions about the players and the atp tournament. there was then some team games involving teachers, students and coaches. Children, from beginner to advanced level, were specially invited to demonstrate their skills on court. after this the students got to watch the first match of the round on centre court. sharjah trip’s a gem! on sunday 20th February the Gems wellington primary school year 5 pupils went on a fantastic sharjah adventure - to visit the palace and private zoo of her royal highness shaikha hassa bint Khalifa al maktoum. on arrival the children were greeted by the zoo staff and then visited the different sections of the zoo –

learning about the wide variety of animals and their natural habitats. (they were even given the opportunity to pet and feed some of them, with the expert supervision of the staff!) the children saw many rainforest animals including iguanas, african grey parrots, macaws, monkeys and lemurs to name a few! sharjah has one of the best collections in the region, and it's a perfect place to learn.there was even a delicious buffet lunch which the children thoroughly enjoyed. this was a truly wonderful trip and the year 5 children and teachers alike felt very privileged to have been given the opportunity to visit such a beautiful place.

had the privilege of meeting a broadway actor who was starring in phantom of the opera for a question and answer session. a few days later, students spent the morning learning the choreography for mary poppins’ rooftop song ‘step in time’, with a very enthusiastic workshop leader. during a performance of the spanish show Fuerzabruta on their last evening, those who dared, expressed themselves freely by ‘dancing in the rain’, as water fell from the ceiling of the theatre onto the audience!

students also used the new york subway while commuting through the city and wandered over to Queens to enjoy the sights there. they made their own animations at the museum of the moving image and walked many blocks downtown to see the beauty of the ‘lady liberty’ from the very windy staten island Ferry. amazing!

For meetings and conventions, there’s a wealth of facilities, including modular halls which transform from ballroom-size to intimate workshop settings.
