Hyönteiset

Hyönteiset ovat monimuotoisin eliöluokka maapallolla. Itse asiassa hyönteislajeja on enemmän kuin muita eliölajeja yhteensä. Hyönteisten erilaisten muotojen ja elintapojen kirjo on ällistyttävä. Hyönteisten joukosta löytyvät kokoonsa verrattuna vahvimmat eläimet ja monimutkaisimmat eläinyhdyskunnat (ihmistä lukuun ottamatta), vain pari esimerkkiä mainiten.

Hyönteisten merkitys maapallon ekosysteemissä on mittaamaton. Ne muodostavat keskeisen osan maanpäällistä ravintoketjua ja ovat tärkeimpiä kukkakasvien pölyttäjiä. Hyönteiset ovat tärkeitä myös hajottajina, jotka syömällä kuolleiden eläinten ja kasvien jäänteitä palauttavat niiden sisältämiä ravinteita luontoon.

Ihmisen näkökulmasta monet hyönteiset ovat hyödyllisiä, eräät taas kiusankappaleita, jotkut ovat kauniita, toiset karmivia, useimmat ovat pikkuruisia, mutta kaikki silti kiinnostavia omine erityispiirteineen. Käsillä oleva teos, Hyönteiset, on saanut innoituksensa näistä kiehtovista pikku olioista. Tekijä toivoo, että se puolestaan innoittaa nuorta opiskelijaa tutkimaan pianon sointien lisäksi myös maailmaa ja luontoa ympärillämme.

Hyönteiset on tarkoitettu kokoelmaksi, ei niinkään sarjamuotoiseksi teokseksi. Kokoelmasta voi vapaasti valita esitettäväksi yksittäisiä osia tai niiden yhdistelmiä. Myös kokonaisesityksessä osien järjestys on vapaa; nuotin mukainen järjestys on vain yksi vaihtoehto. Teos on omistettu hyönteistieteilijä ja säveltäjä, professori Olavi Sotavallan (1918–1991) muistolle.

Insects

Insects are the most diverse group of organisms on Earth. In fact, there are more insect species than all other species combined. The versatility of forms and lifestyles of insects is astounding. The strongest animals compared to their size and the most complex animal societies (excluding humans) are found among the insects, to name just a couple of examples.

The role insects play in the Earth’s ecosystem is immense. They form a crucial part in the terrestrial food chain and are the most important pollinators of flowering plants. Insects are important also as decomposers that feed on remains of dead animals or plants and recycle their nutrients into nature.

From the human point of view, many insects are beneficial while a few are nuisances, some are beautiful to behold while others look creepy, most are tiny, yet all are interesting with their own peculiarities. The present work, Insects, has been inspired by these fascinating little creatures. The author hopes it will in turn inspire the young student to explore not only the sonorities of the piano but also the world and nature around us.

Insects is conceived as a collection of pieces, not as a suite. Any individual pieces or combinations thereof can be freely chosen for performance. Even in an integral performance the order of the pieces is free; the order given in the score is but one option. The work is dedicated to the memory of professor Olavi Sotavalta (1918–1991), entomologist and composer.
