Eaton’s (formerly Vickers®) Hydraulics Group training center, was established in 1945. Since then, our world- class instructors and state-of-the art facilities have made Eaton the educational stan-dard for the industry. We are the first choice of many customers for their fluid power training needs.

Training Services offers both product and technology courses that cover a wide array of fluid power related topics. Our courses suit the needs of anyone involved in the industry, from newcom-ers to application specialists.

Overview

Training Services is able to ensure quality in its courses by maintaining a limited class size, utilizing state-of-the-art equipment that includes simulators, cut-aways and take-aparts, and by providing materials that directly coincide with the course presentation.

This brochure contains complete descriptions of training courses and products.

Facilities

Located in Maumee, Ohio (Toledo area) is our state-of-the-art training facility. The 23,000 square-foot facility can accommodate all training offerings. Along with the Eaton training facility in Eden Prairie, Minnesota, both sites are fully equipped to serve train-ing classes offered by Eaton, including technology courses and product courses.

Get Certified

Courses offered in this brochure are led by the finest instructors available. Students attending training at our facilities are provided with all the necessary training materials.

Completion Requirements

Unless otherwise stated, completion requirements for students in all courses include written exercises and exams, attendance and participation in all sessions. Certificates will be awarded to all students who have met all of the above course completion requirements. Upon successful completion of a training course, students are issued a certificate to validate and recognize their learning and competency (except for the FPS Certification review courses. The Fluid Power Society (FPS) conducts the exam for their respective certifications the day after Eaton’s review ses-sion is completed. Some courses in this brochure have prerequisites prior to stu-dents attendance. Refer to the following course descriptions for specific course prerequisites.


Customized In-plant Training

Aside from the courses listed in our published schedules, Eaton’s Hydraulics Group Training Services offers specialized training at one of our facilities or your location. We can either custom tailor a condensed version of one of our existing technology courses (except Canbus Fundamentals) to meet your needs or work with your staff to create a specific curriculum. Customized product training is conducted for authorized distributors. We can provide simulators, cutaways, take-aparts and other training materials that may be required. In-Plant training is quoted individually and based on the number of course days, lab exercises and number of students. Please call us at 800-413-8809 to obtain additional information or a quote.

Regional Training Programs

Eaton is now making it easier than ever for customers to access our training programs. In addition to customized in-plant pro-grams that are unique to suit specific customer training needs, we now offer regionally based road schools. These schools will be offered throughout the country at various conference center locations. Programs will focus on either product or technology depending on the needs within that region. Class offerings will be listed on our website at eatonhydraulics.com/training.

Cancellation Policy

An enrollment can be cancelled up to THREE weeks prior to the first day of class without penalty. Cancellations occurring within

three weeks of the first day of class are subject to a 100% can-cellation fee. No tuition refunds will be processed for “no-show” students. It is recommended that all enrollment cancellations be communicated via telephone or fax. Dated cancellation state-ments will be sent to the student upon request.

Class Cancellations

Eaton reserves the right to cancel classes for any reason. If a class cancellation occurs, each registered student will be notified at least four weeks prior to the first day of class and receive alter-native class date(s) or a full tuition refund.

Eaton assumes no responsibility for transportation charges incurred relative to cancelled or changed classes.

Registration and Payment Policies

Registrations are processed on a first-come, first-served basis and must be accompanied by payment. Accepted payment forms include purchase order or credit card. A seat in class can be reserved only upon receipt of a form of payment for tuition; purchase order or credit card.

Tuition will be billed upon registration to the class.

Form of payment must be received at Eaton’s Hydraulics Training Services at least four weeks prior to the first day of class. All training materials are included in the tuition payment. Confirma-tion letters with detailed information will be sent via email to registered students

Instructor Symposium

Eaton’s Training Services has a long and distinguished history in the fluid power education arena, ever since the original Vickers’ Training Center was founded in 1945. Through various technol-ogy and product related classes, as well as the variety of training materials that we offer, Eaton strives to lead the industry in fluid power education.

Circuit DesignThis four-and-a-half-day course will cover how to select and properly size components used in industrial hydraulic circuits. It will not cover mobile applications. Students will learn the correct methods for properly sizing components selected and not relying on “rules of thumb” to optimize the energy use within a system. The course is math intensive as basic math and physics are used to calculate required performance requirements for applications.

Who Should Attend

This course is appropriate for personnel involved with the applica-tion and design of hydraulic systems and for product application specialists. NOTE: This course will meet the requirements for the Eaton Industrial 400 level certification requirements for distribu-tors and employees.

TroubleshootingThis Four-and-a-half-day course is designed for those individuals involved with troubleshooting hydraulic systems in the indus-trial environment. The objective of this course is to familiarize students with the proper techniques to perform systematic troubleshooting from symptom identification to fault isolation. Hands-on training is utilized to provide students the opportunity to perform troubleshooting techniques. This course is appropriate for maintenance, sales, and design personnel.

Pump Controls CourseThis three day course will familiarize students with the theory of operation of variable displacement pumps (both open and closed circuit). Students will learn the principles of operation for pres-sure compensation, load-sensing, and torque limiting for open loop pumps. Mechanical, hydraulic, and electro-hydraulic controls for closed loop pump applications will be taught as well as the differences between a pressure override control and power limit-ing.

In addition, students will gain an understanding of how to opti-mize a fixed displacement pump system to minimize energy loss during operation. Hands-on lab exercises will allow the students to gain valuable practical understanding of how to setup and adjust pump controls.

Filtration, Fluids & LubricantsThis three-day seminar teaches students how to determine the contamination control requirements of hydraulic systems so they may properly design, maintain, and purchase hydraulic systems. The course examines the concepts behind effective contamina-tion control and the proper ways to select and size a filtration solution for hydraulic systems. In addition, a fluids expert will spend one day covering the lubricants commonly used in hydrau-lic systems and what properties and characteristics are important when selecting a fluid for a hydraulic system.

This course fulfills Systemic Contamination Control certification as required by Channel Compensation Resources (CCR).

Canbus FundamentalsThis one-day course emphasizes the fundamentals and principles of Controller Area Network communication protocol known as Canbus. The course focuses on computer number systems, hardware connections, message formats, the Canbus Protocols, and error handling methods along with associated messages. It is a good primer to get the attendee familiar with the Canbus Communication Standard in preparation for setting up a Canbus controlled system.

This course is appropriate for application designers and engi-neers, electronic technicians and system maintenance staff with appropriate electrical background.

Cartridge ValvesThis three-day course covers both the theory and operation of DIN (slip-in) and screw-in cartridge valves. Operating principles of the most commonly used cartridge valves will be described and students will perform lab exercises to reinforce the concepts of how these components are used in typical hydraulic circuits.

This course is appropriate for personnel involved with the main-tenance and application of hydraulic systems and for product ap-plication specialists. It is not intended to be a engineering design level course.

Eaton’s F(x) CertificationEaton offers this four-day course for students looking to certify for the Eaton CONTROL F(x) software, EFX controllers, and the VFX / SFX panel mounted display units. Functions and features of both the programming software and target hardware are covered. The IEC 61131-3 standard is introduced and many of the language capabilities are demonstrated. Attendees will cre-ate, download, and test hands-on programs with real hardware. Debugging and visualization capabilities within CONTROL F(x) are addressed as well. Each attendee will receive a license for CON-TROL F(x), an EFX 1612J controller, and a first-year paid support contract with this course. A comprehensive exam will be given at the end of the course and those that successfully complete the exam will be awarded Eaton’s F(X) certification.

HTS-2 Hydraulics Training SystemEaton’s Training Services newly redesigned Hydraulic Train-ing System (HTS-2) hydraulic trainer is based on many years of instructional experience and our previous, highly acclaimed designs. This fluid power training simulator is designed to ensure that those involved with the study of hydraulics have the most cost effective, hands-on method of presenting a practical demon-stration of the principles taught within the classroom. The HTS-2 unit has been designed, built and is exclusively available through the Eaton Hydraulics Group Training Services department with a 1 year limited warranty.

The HTS-2 is a dual operator station simulator with a central power unit that supplies one or both sides to accommodate up to 4 students at a time. The power unit is capable of supplying a total flow of 3 gpm at 500 psi and will operate on a standard 120VAC 15 amp lighting circuit.

The components mounted on each panel are representative of those found in today’s hydraulic applications and allow the students to visually reinforce the learning concepts. Each HTS-2 comes with a detailed instructor guide that explains the exer-cises, provides a pictorial guide to ensure proper assembly and a video demonstrating the proper performance of each exercise.

Components can be easily connected together through flexible hoses and leak-free quick disconnects to configure many varia-tions of basic hydraulic circuits which reinforce the theory and principles of operation taught in class. Programmable Motion Control Trainer Eaton has designed a new state of the art electronic controls trainer that is capable of facilitating legacy style electro-hydraulic training as well as programmable control of hydraulic and pneu-matic components.

Eaton’s EF(X) controller, as well as a PID Proportional Amplifier are located in the unit along with all the necessary support elec-tronics to control and monitor system operation. When coupled to a computer (not included), the programmable controller is easily configured through Eaton’s Control F(X) software in confor-mance with IEC 61131-3 standards. This open architecture allows a great deal of flexibility in teaching control systems as it can be programmed in one of five widely accepted languages. This controller allows for direct outputs to many devices and can also provide outputs via CANOPEN and J1939. With the simulation capabilities of the unit, programs can be checked for operational correctness prior to running on a machine application. The PID Proportional Amplifier can be used to control proportional valves directly to teach legacy control technology or can also be used to troubleshoot existing Eaton proportional valves.

This unit consists of a sturdy aluminum frame which houses the necessary power supplies, controllers, circuitry, input devices, and displays to monitor command, feedback, and output signals.

Portable Electrohydraulic Training Simulator (PETS)Eaton’s Training Services newly redesigned Portable Electro-hydraulic Training Simulator (PETS) is based on many years of instructional experience and our previous, highly acclaimed de-signs. This fluid power training simulator is designed to ensure that those involved with the study of electrohydraulics have the most cost effective, hands-on method of presenting a practical demonstration of the principles taught within the classroom. Using the PETS unit, students will become familiar with the principles of Electrohydraulic control of Position and Velocity including the mounting of proportional and servo valves, the electrical wiring, tuning, and troubleshooting of the proportional and servo amplifier cards. The lab experiments include both open and closed loop control of the cylinder position or velocity. Students will wire the proportional amplifier card and adjust the Gain, Deadband Compensation, and acceleration and decelera-tion of the cylinder using on board Ramps. The servo amplifier will demonstrate the concepts of nulling, balancing command versus feedback, setting positive and negative current limiters to match the amplifier to any servo valve torque motor, and the adjustment of Proportional, Integral, and Derivative Gains for proper closed loop control of the cylinder. A hydraulic motor and tachometer option is available to also teach open or closed loop rotary velocity control.

Closed Loop Electrohydrau-lics Systems Manual

This text was designed to help people involved with closed loop electrohydraulic control systems. Because the discussion of the fundamental principles of amplifiers, ramp generators and comparators requires a working knowledge of electronics, the student will learn about voltage, current, re-sistance and capacitance in DC circuits. The manual covers the operation of open and closed-loop servo valve and propor-tional valve systems, and design considerations such as valve sizing, actuator selection and feedback transducers. It was prepared assuming the reader has a solid understand-ing of fluid power concepts.
