Tips on Tipping A brief guide to customary tipping practices in India

23

Page 25: Hyderabad C HyderabadCityGuide.pdfity Guide

Tips on Tipping

Since you are in an unfamiliar place with new cultural rules, we have put together a brief guide to customary tipping practices in India.

As of 1/1/2008, 37 - 39 Rupees (Rs.) equates to one U.S. Dollar, depending on the exchange rate at the time of exchanging dollars. However, 39 rupees relative to a dollar has greater purchasing power. The average laborer you may encounter earns probably no more than Rs.4,000 per month. Drivers Rs.50 - 100 per day is appropriate. You may choose to tip your driver either on a daily basis or at the end of your stay. You are likely to find the drivers to be friendly, and that they know the city well. They have been known to invite patrons to their family homes. This is meant as a sign of respect, but we advise you to refrain from accepting these invitations. Ensure your driver speaks and understands English. Traffic is terrible in the morning between 8:30 and 10:00 am and in the evening from 5:45 pm. Plan your leaving and arriving, or ask your driver for alternative routes.

Hotel Room service: It is customary, although not mandatory, to tip room service delivery staff. Rs.10-20 is sufficient. Restaurants and bars: 10-15% of the bill is the norm, except at breakfast, which is often a buffet.

At breakfast, tipping is discretionary. You may just wish to reward a particularly helpful member of staff at the end of your stay.

Laundry/Housekeeping: Again, not mandatory, but laundry staff would appreciate Rs.10-20 on delivery. For housekeeping, we recommend Rs.100 every 3 or 4 days of your stay. (This guarantees fresh flowers!) Doorman, Valet: As with Room Service, Rs.10-20 is acceptable, although not every time someone opens the door for you.

24

Page 26: Hyderabad C HyderabadCityGuide.pdfity Guide

Tips on Tipping

Out and About Auto Rickshaws: Three-wheelers are seen almost on all the roads. If you choose to use one (and it’s a unique experience you may want to have), insist on using the billing meter. If the operator refuses, simply flag down another one.

Within the city, you should not expect to pay more than Rs.50 for a one- way trip. After 10.00 p.m. the fare jumps to 1.5 x the meter reading. Restaurants and bars: 15% of the bill is acceptable. In bars you will often get a check at the end of the night and one waiter will have been allocated to you throughout. So there’s no need to tip every time you order a drink.

Experienced Traveler Tips

Before Leaving the U.S. • If you can, try to meet personally with as many practitioners from

your practice and others you have worked with to let them know that you are visiting/going on rotation to R10 and invite/encourage them to reach out to you if they need any assistance. If you can’t meet personally, call them or send them an e-mail.

• Meet with/contact recent visitors/expats who have returned from R10 and gain their views/advice/perspective and get an understanding of expectations on the ground. • Gather any training materials from courses that you may have

recently delivered or of courses you may have taken. • Go to usps.com and either request the US Postal Service to hold your mail or provide a forwarding address while you are gone. • Do your research on travel places in India and pick a “top 3-4” list as that will probably be the number of places you might be able to do during your rotation; some of these include Bombay, Goa, Kerala, and Jaipur. Contact Kala Rayaprolu in R10 for package deals. • Pack an umbrella, if you are going during the rains. • It may be beneficial to carry some travelers’ checks as a reliable back-up.

Travel Tips Best route is to fly through Frankfurt (Lufthansa-United) or Amsterdam (Northwest-KLM).

If you decide to transit through Delhi/Mumbai and require a night’s layover, make prior hotel reservations. DO NOT accept offers from local agents to take you to a hotel.

If you have a personal laptop and intend to carry it together with your work laptop, you will be assessed a customs fees when you arrive in India for one of your laptops.

If for some reason you arrive at the Hyderabad airport and are not able to locate your cab driver, call the hotel.

Bus/cabs for local professionals are not very flexible and need to be planned in advance, especially during weekends.

When flying out of Hyderabad, you must bring a printed copy of your itinerary in order to enter the airport.

Please refer to the Expat Support Program on DeloitteNet for more detailed information on working with Region 10. The page can be found on https://www.deloittenet.com/Regions/INDWeb/TopLinks/ R10ExpatriateSupportProgram/default.htm Cultural Differences Open your mind to new cultures. India is a microcosm of different cultures. Set realistic goals and focus on sharing best practices and quality procedures.

Understanding Indian culture: Unwilling to accept blame - R10 professionals tend not to accept blame easily. This should not be misconstrued as arrogance, nor are they shying away from accepting responsibility for errors committed. In India, maintaining one’s dignity is very important. Accepting fault/blame may imply that one’s dignity is at stake.

Avoiding confrontation - In a culture of politeness, R10 personnel avoid confrontation and hence tend to be indirect. They often find it hard to say ‘no’ or raise problematic issues effectively.

Meaning of ‘Yes’ - A response of ‘Yes’ by an R10 professional in a conversation is an acknowledgement of listening and not necessarily that of understanding or agreement. It is helpful to have the team summarize their understanding at the end of a meeting to ensure everyone is on the same page.

Over-communication is better than just waiting for something that may never happen, happen too late or be done incorrectly. Try to build in touch points to make sure everyone is on the right track.

Understand the body language, more specifically the ‘Nod’/head wobble - It does not mean ‘yes’ or ‘no’. It is just a sign that the question was heard and/or request received. It’s always good to ask for confirmation - ask them to explain the requirements and give you a timeline for completion. Direct communication - R10 professionals prefer face-to- face or verbal communication over emails.

33

Page 33: Hyderabad C HyderabadCityGuide.pdfity Guide

Experienced Traveler Tips

Punctuality is not a given - keep this in mind while scheduling meetings. Also emphasize the importance of always being on time and meeting deadlines to the U.S. practice. A meeting scheduled to start at 10 a.m., might actually see people coming in by 10:10 a.m. Perhaps, it is better to schedule the meeting for 9:45 a.m. to ensure everyone’s on board at 10 a.m.

Group tasks - R10 professionals are very eager to help you with your work. Make sure you don’t ask a large number of people to do the same thing, they are likely to drop whatever they were doing to assist you with your task. It’s best to assign work on an individual basis. Assist them in prioritizing their work.

Develop relationships: While there is a lot of pressure on your time during your time in Region 10, it is important to try and develop relationships with R10 professionals to create a more collegial working environment. If you participate with the group in social/cultural settings, it’s easier to gain the R10 team’s trust and respect.

Positive reinforcements: Recognize exceptional performance both locally and through U.S. project leaders. A personal call from a U.S. project manager or partner goes a long way in building morale and loyalty.

Lunch time: R10 professionals do not typically eat at their desks. They eat in groups at the cafeteria. Make sure you keep this in mind while scheduling meetings around lunch time. Having lunch with R10 professionals is another way to forge stronger relationships.
