Hockey’s Lethal Weapon

For reference, a penalty corner (pc) is granted in the case of unintentional fault in the circle or willful misconduct in the 23-meter zone. It is played from the end line (via the player entering the ball into play) to attackers placed outside the circle. The ball must leave the circle to be able to score a goal. An attacker playing the ball in the circle must score the goal. Only four defenders and the goalkeeper are allowed to defend the goal. The pc has become the lethal weapon of several national teams who have true sharpshooters such as the Dutch player Mink van der Weerden.

Ever more powerful (the best achieve ball speeds of over 145 km/hr) and more accurate, sleepers (this is not the right term in English I think you want to use drag flickers instead) have worked hard to improve their technique and movement. This phase of play has become crucial in modern hockey and the staff carefully prepares defensive penalty corners (such as going out facing an opponent) and offensive penalty corners (choice of direct sleep or phase sleep again should be drag flick and I am not sure what is meant by phase). In London during the 2012 Olympics, there were 251 penalty corners in 72 matches, for an average of 3.48 per game, 69 goals were scored during penalties, for a success rate of 37% for men (for the women, it was nearly 51%!).

What else? In 2013, the IHF decided to impose a time limit on the pc giving the team a maximum of 40 seconds to execute the pc. If the team is not ready at the end of the allotted time, the captain may receive a green card

Story of the dayA day in a life: umpiresWhile mostly everyone’s focus during the Hockey World League here in Antwerp has been turned to the team and players as they strive for a ticket to Rio, we cannot forget about the third team on the pitch during these games: the umpires. During these matches there is a total of four umpires per game: two on the pitch, one video umpire, and one reserve umpire. Each pitch umpire works one game per day to make sure that they are fresh and focused for every game that they work; this includes the reserve umpire. Video umpires, however, work two games a day although never back-to-back games. When pitch umpires are not overseeing a match they tend to refresh and relax at their hotel. Video umpires can usually be found in the A4 stands catching the matches they are not working.

Coen van Bunge, one of the video umpires here in Antwerp, said that being a video umpire is stressful because when players and pitch umpires disagree it falls to them to make the decision. Sometimes video umpires may not have the correct angles when they review a play or the right footage but, more often than not they are able to make a quick decision. Being on the pitch, it is important for an umpire to cooperate with the players to an extent so that the players trust and accept the decisions the umpire makes. When an umpire is in reserve they are there just in case a pitch umpire is injured as well as to make sure the umpires on the pitch have water and anything else they need to remain focused for the match.

There is a real sense of community among umpires. As an umpire you tend to run into the same umpires in other countries and at different tournaments, which inevitably leads to the forming of friendships. These friendships allow umpires to learn from each other and become better with each game that they work. Coen said he is enjoying being a video umpire because he gets to see all the other umpires work their games and learn from them. Umpires, just like the players and fans, love hockey that’s why they are here! Respect them : without them, there’s no game…

During the 1970s, hockey was the first national sport, a sort of religion for the whole

country, however the situation has changed a great deal in India today. Now, cricket is the

real cult for the 1.27 billion inhabitants. While there are just 30,000 players throughout the

country, hockey does remain extremely popular in some regions such as Penjab, Orissa,

Mumbai, and Bengalore. In these regions hockey is still practised in schools. There are no

longer any real competitions, like those in Europe, apart from some local tournaments,

which is mainly due to the country’s size. After having outrageously dominated the sport

for close to forty years (the men’s team ended up on the podium of the Olympic Games a

total of eleven times out of twelve, with six gold medals) the country returned to the ranks

when synthetic turf made its debut. India was the first country to secure their ticket for the

2016 Olympic Games, when the men’s team took home the gold medal at the last Asian

Games, in South Korea. India

Le penalty corner (p.c.) est, pour rappel,

octroyé en cas de faute non intentionnelle

dans le cercle ou de faute volontaire dans

la zone des 23 mètres. Il se joue à partir de

la ligne du fond (via le donneur) vers des

attaquants placés hors du cercle. La balle

doit sortir du cercle pour pouvoir marquer

un but. Le but devant être marqué par un

attaquant jouant la balle dans le cercle.

Seuls quatre défenseurs et le gardien

sont autorisés à défendre le but. Le p.c.

est devenu l’arme fatale de plusieurs

équipes nationales qui possèdent de

véritables machines à marquer comme le

Néerlandais Mink van der Weerden.

Story of the dayUn jour dans la peau des arbitresAlors que l’attention de la plupart des gens se porte pendant la Hockey World League sur les équipes et les joueurs qui tentent de décrocher un ticket pour Rio, il ne faut pas oublier la troisième équipe présente sur le terrain : les arbitres. Pour chaque match, quatre arbitres - deux sur le terrain, un arbitre vidéo et un arbitre de réserve - veillent au bon déroulement des rencontres. Les arbitres de terrain sifflent un seul match par jour pour être sûrs d’être assez concentrés et frais. Les arbitres vidéo, en revanche, font deux matches par jour mais jamais d’affilée. Lorsque les arbitres de terrain n’ont pas à superviser de match, ils se détendent à leur hôtel. Les arbitres vidéo restent, la plupart du temps, dans la tribune et suivent les matches pour lesquels ils ne sont pas retenus.

Le Néerlandais Coen van Bunge, un des arbitres vidéo présents à Anvers, nous raconte “qu’être arbitre vidéo est stressant car, lorsque les joueurs et les arbitres de terrain ne sont pas d’accord, c’est à nous de trancher et de prendre une décision. Il arrive qu’en vérifiant une phase de jeu, l’arbitre vidéo n’ait pas l’angle ou la séquence qu’il faut. À ce moment-là, il est impossible de prendre une décision (rapide)”. Sur le terrain, il importe pour un arbitre de coopérer avec les joueurs, afin que ceux-ci lui fassent confiance et acceptent ses décisions. L’arbitre de réserve est là pour remplacer un arbitre qui se serait blessé, mais aussi pour ravitailler en eau les arbitres et leur fournir ce dont ils auraient besoin pour rester concentrés sur leur match.

Les arbitres forment une vraie communauté. Ils se rencontrent souvent lors des différents tournois organisés aux quatre coins monde, ce qui resserre les liens d’amitié. Par ailleurs, ils apprennent les uns des autres et se perfectionnent au fil des matches qu’ils ont sifflés. Coen nous révèle qu’il apprécie le travail d’arbitre vidéo parce que cela lui permet de voir les autres arbitres faire leur travail et de continuer à apprendre. Les arbitres, tout comme les joueurs et les supporters, aiment le hockey et c’est la raison pour laquelle ils sont ici ! Respectons-les : sans eux, il n’y a pas de rencontre...

Si, durant les années septante, le hockey était encore le premier sport national et même une véritable religion pour toute la nation, il faut bien admettre que la situation a bien changé en Inde. Aujourd’hui, c’est le cricket qui fait l’objet d’un véritable culte de la part des 1,27 milliards d’habitants. Avec seulement 30.000 joueurs dans l’ensemble du pays, le hockey reste toutefois extrêmement populaire dans le Penjab, dans la Région d’Orissa, à Mumbai et à Bengalore. Pratiqué dans les écoles, il n’existe plus de véritables compétitions comme en Europe à l’exception de certains tournois, en raison de la taille du pays. Après avoir dominé outrageusement la discipline durant près de quarante ans (les messieurs ont terminé onze fois sur le podium aux JO en douze éditions, avec six médailles d’or), au temps du véritable hockey sur gazon, le pays est rentré dans les rangs au moment de l’apparition des terrains synthétiques. Première nation à avoir décroché son ticket pour les Jeux 2016, chez les Messieurs, en remportant la médaille d’or lors des derniers Jeux asiatiques, en Corée du Sud, l’Inde veut retrouver son lustre d’antan et met tout en œuvre pour redevenir l’une des meilleures nations sur l’échiquier mondial. Chez les Dames, le groupe est en progrès constant et les résultats commencent à suivre. L’unique objectif fixé à Brasschaat : décrocher, elles-aussi, leur ticket pour Rio.

Even ter herinnering: de strafcorner of penalty corner (p.c.) wordt toegekend bij een onopzettelijke overtreding binnen de cirkel of een opzettelijke overtreding in de 23 meterzone. Een strafcorner wordt genomen vanaf de achterlijn (via de aangever) naar de aanvallers die buiten de cirkel staan. De bal moet buiten de cirkel zijn geweest – anders kun je geen geldig doelpunt maken. Het doelpunt moet worden gemaakt door een aanvaller die de bal in de cirkel speelt. Alleen de doelman en vier verdedigers mogen het doel verdedigen. Voor diverse nationale teams is de strafcorner een dodelijk wapen geworden, dankzij spelers die echte experts zijn. Denk maar aan de Nederlander Mink van der Weerden. De ‘sleepers’ worden almaar sterker (de besten slaan de bal weg met een snelheid van meer dan 145 km/u) en nauwkeuriger, en werken onvermoeibaar om hun techniek en beweging te verbeteren. Deze spelfase is cruciaal geworden in het moderne hockey. De trainersstaf bereidt de defensieve (zoals uitlopen naar een tegenstander) en offensieve (keuze van een directe sleep of een fase) patronen bij strafcorners dan ook nauwgezet voor. Tijdens de OS van 2012 in Londen werden in totaal 251 strafcorners toegekend in 72 wedstrijden – gemiddeld 3,48 per match. Er werden 69 doelpunten gescoord uit een penalty corner, goed voor een slaagpercentage van 37 % (bij de dames ging het om bijna 51 %!).

What else? In 2013 besliste de FIH om een team nog slechts 40 seconden tijd te geven om een strafcorner te nemen. Is het team nog niet klaar om de pc. te nemen? Dan kan de kapitein een groene kaart krijgen.

Story of the dayEen dag in het spoor van de scheidsrechters


Terwijl iedereen zijn aandacht vestigt op de spelers en de ploegen die strijden om een ticket naar Rio, mogen we de derde ploeg op het veld niet vergeten: de scheidsrechters. Er zijn er steeds vier van hen aanwezig tijdens een wedstrijd, twee op het veld, één videoscheidsrechter en één reservescheidsrechter. Elke veldscheidsrechter fluit slechts één wedstrijd per dag om fris en gefocust te blijven. Dit geldt ook voor de reservescheidsrechter. Videoscheidsrechters werken twee wedstrijden af per dag, maar nooit twee na elkaar. Wanneer ze niet werken, ontspannen ze zich in hun hotel of op de tribune.

Coen van Bunge is één van de videoscheidsrechters. Hij vertelt dat dit een heel stressvolle job is, aangezien zij de beslissing nemen wanneer spelers en scheidsrechters op het veld het niet eens zijn. Soms hebben ze niet het juiste beeld om een fase te beoordelen, maar ze moeten bijna altijd een beslissing nemen. Op het veld is het belangrijk dat de scheidsrechter samenwerkt met de spelers zodat zij hem vertrouwen en zijn beslissing accepteren. De reservescheidsrechter zorgt ervoor dat de anderen genoeg water en andere benodigdheden hebben. Hij zal pas zelf in actie komen bij een eventuele blessure van een veldscheidsrechter.

Er heerst een echt gemeenschapsgevoel tussen de verschillende scheidsrechters. Meestal komen ze elkaar geregeld tegen op verschillende internationale toernooien, wat hun onderlinge band nog versterkt. Het zorgt ervoor dat scheidsrechters van elkaar leren en beter worden. Coen vind het geweldig om videoscheidsrechter te zijn omdat hij zijn collega’s aan het werk kan zien en zo veel kan bijleren. Net zoals de spelers en de fans houden scheidsrechters van het hockey en daarom zijn ze hier! Respecteer ze: zonder hen, is er geen wedstrijd…

Hoewel hockey in de jaren 1970 dé nationale sport van India was en de hele natie de wedstrijden vol spanning volgde, is dat tegenwoordig wel anders. Vandaag is het namelijk al cricket wat de klok slaat bij de 1,27 miljard inwoners. Maar ook al laat het aantal hockeyspelers in het hele land – amper 30.000 – iets anders vermoeden, toch is de sport nog steeds extreem populair in de Punjab, Odisha, Mumbai en Bangalore. Ze wordt er namelijk op school beoefend. India heeft door de enorme afstanden wel geen eigen competitie meer zoals die in Europa, met uitzondering van enkele nationale toernooien. Nadat India de sport in de tijd van het veldhockey bijna veertig jaar lang had gedomineerd (de herenploeg haalde in twaalf edities elf keer het podium op de Olympische Spelen en won maar liefst zes gouden medailles), maakte het land zijn absolute comeback toen de kunstgrasvelden hun intrede deden. India is trouwens het eerste land dat een ticket voor de Olympische Spelen van 2016 beet had. De herenploeg won namelijk de gouden medaille tijdens de meest recente Aziatische Spelen in Zuid-Korea. Het land wil dan ook zijn fantastische prestaties van weleer herhalen en zet alles op alles om weer een van de beste hockeynaties ter wereld te worden. Ook de damesploeg boekt meer vorderingen en dat is te zien aan de resultaten. Hun doel in Brasschaat: ook een ticket voor Rio binnenrijven, natuurlijk!
