difficult and cold life Difference lies in focus and degree Cold of the mansion is literal and figurative; mansion is cold in

temp.; it is also sterile and barren. The cold of the Englishman is strictly emotional- the worst sort of cold; colder than the mansion.

Angelou’s attitude toward Eyre’s life is one of sympathy and concern.
