High Pressure GrindingKHD Humboldt Wedag Roller Presses. With our Roller Presses, the grinding pressure is transferred from the hydraulic system via the movable roll to thematerial bed and absorbed in a stable, closed machine frame. A key feature is the mounting of the rollers in oil-lubricated cylindrical roller bearings. The oil is both, lubricant and cooling agent. Alternatively, grease lubricationis possible. Power transmission from the electric motors is effected via cardan shaft, fluid or safe set coupling andclamping disc fitted gear boxes, usually of planetary design. Depending on the application, the rollers are eitherone piece solid construction or shaft and tire design with suitable wear protection for almost all applications inthe cement and minerals industry.

Always up to expectations. The KHD Humboldt Wedag RollerPress is available in ten standardsizes ranging in grinding force from2 to 32 meganewtons. The specificgrinding pressure is kept below7.0 N/mm2 in order to limit thestress on the rollers (grindingpressure = grinding force/rolldiameter/roll width). The pressurebetween the rolls can be lowerfor grinding granulated slag, rawmaterial or for special applications, such as preparation of ore. To keepwear costs to a minimum whengrinding ore, the rollers are studdedwith tungsten-carbide studs. Thefeed material then forms an auto-

genous wear lining by fillingthe space between the studs.

KHD Roller Presses offer areliable solution for every

application.

A framework you'll work better with. The machine frame has identicalupper and lower tiebars. Rubberpads are placed between the rollerbearing blocks and the frame ends. The rubber pads act as an articulatedjoint and have a vibration dampingeffect. The RPS-type as a special type(see last page) reduces maintenancetime during roller changes. The doorsin the roll cover permit rapid andwide access to the rollers for inspec-tion and maintenance.

latet slag.

A driving force: reasonably stressed. The drive power is transferred tothe grinding rollers via multi-stageplanetary gearboxes with first stagespur gears. The gearboxes aremounted on the drive end of theroller shaft using a hydraulic shrinkcoupling. While giving absolutesafety against slip, the coupling al-lows rapid removal if required. Thetorque supports are linked directly tothe machine foundation. This arran-gement prevents torque relatedstress from acting on roller shaftsand bearings. A V-belt drivecan be used for drives ofup to approx. 400kWper motor. Drives above400kW are equippedwith fluid or safe setcoupling and cardanshaft.

A question of the right bearings.Roller Presses: roller supportRoller Press rolls and bearings. In KHD Roller Presses, the rollers are supported in radial, multi-row cylindricalroller bearings. Axial bearings take up the axial force and transfer it intothe machine frame. The bearing housings are guided by exterior slideframes allowing stressless skewing of the rolls. During skewing, bearinghousing, cylindrical roll bearing and shaft are kept in parallel alignmentwith the roller shaft. Bearing and bearing housing cannot move relativelyto each other. The seals remain fixed in place and cannot move apart.

The slight angular movements between bearing housing and the hydrauliccylinder, which is moveable in all directions, are take up by a rubber pad. This ensures an even load distribution on the roller bearing, substantially in-creasing the life of the bearing.

Additional long life design features of KHD Roller Presses include:• Generously sized bearing load factor• Continuous feeding of filtered lubrication oil• Bearings cooled by the lubrication oil for low bearing temperature• Bearing sealing with fixed radial shaft sealings arranged back to back• Additional permanently greased labyrinth with V- ring and separate dust

labyrinth on the inner side of the bearings

Oil lubricated roller bearings are now standard with all KHD HumboldtWedag Roller Presses. All contact points on the cylindrical roller bearingare supplied evenly with lubrication. Operating cost can be furtherreduced by checking the state of lubricant regularly (alternativegrease lubrication).

Grinding RollsKHD Humboldt Wedag Roller Pres-ses offer rollers with appropriatewear protection for almost allapplications in the cement andminerals industry. The two-partroller consisting of shaft and tireallows for economical surfacereplacement. The materials used in

the two-part roller are perfectlymatched to each other forstrength and welding properties.Single part rollers are used forhigh temperature grinding. In thisversion, material strength and wel-ding properties are optimized.

Looking for protection against wear and tear? The most economical protection against wear is the ground materialitself. For this reason, roller wear surfaces are designed to keep aportion of the ground material between the surface pattern leadingto reduced wear. An additional advantage of this concept is thematerial draw-in properties of the rollers providing stable operating

conditions even during high fineness grinding.

• Multi-layer welding enables long running times without stoppages.• The complete hard face welded surface is used for feed material of

normal wear characteristic. Surface repair can be carried out quickly.• The surface with hard-alloy studs is used for extremely abrasive

materials.

We prefer to play safe. The Roller Press must be protectedagainst foreign bodies and largefeed sizes. Magnetic separators, metal detectors and screens up-stream of the Roller Press have beena proven solution. The removal offoreign bodies by automati-cally controlled diver-ter gates preventsoperationstoppages.

Passivesecurityagainstoverloadis providedby modernhydraulic equip-ment together withproperly designed rollermaterials and intelligent controlsystems such as ROLCOX. Limits formaximum pressure and feed sizeshave been redefined compared with

the early days of high pressuregrinding. The grinding processhas been further optimized byintroducing the V-SEPARATORwhich makes a major contributiontowards stable operation and

greater operating security.
