Meet the 2013-2014 Directors! Executive Director: Rebecca Shapiro

Rebecca Shapiro is a junior pursuing a major in public relations with a minor in business in the liberal arts and psychology. Rebecca has been a member of HVC since the fall of her freshmen year. She has worked as an AE for Momentum Fitness and as an AA for Contempo Artisan Jewelry, Jezebels Boutique and the College of Communications. In addition to her role as Executive Director, she also serves as the Director of Public Relations for The Public Relations Student Society of America. This summer, Rebecca will serve as a public relations intern for Verizon Wireless Corporate Communications department. On campus, Rebecca also serves as the communications/PR chair for her sorority Delta Zeta.

Director of Communications: Victoria Maseda Victoria Maseda is a rising senior pursing dual majors in public relations and labor employment relations with a minor in business. Since freshmen year, she served HVC as both an AA and AE. Aside from HVC, she is the Director of Finance for Penn State’s Public Relations Student Society of America. For two years, Victoria volunteered as a media relations representative for the Penn State Dance Marathon. When she is not in class, Victoria perfects her backwards-walking skills by conducting campus tours as a Penn State Lion Scout. After graduating in May 2014, Victoria plans to work in a public relations firm or corporation.

Director of Business Affairs: Madeleine Brown Madeleine Brown is a senior majoring in public relations with a minor in business. Along with her position in HVC, Madeleine also serves as Director of Membership/Mentorship for Public Relations Student Society of America. Madeleine worked as an AA for two years. Previously, she served as PRSSA Fundraising Chair and Campus Correspondent of Her Campus Penn State. She has previously held internships at Girls’ Life Magazine and USA TODAY College. This summer, Madeleine will serve as an entertainment features intern for Seventeen Magazine and a public relations intern at Peggy Siegel Company. Upon graduation, she hopes to work in entertainment publicity in New York City or Los Angeles.

Director of Staff Relations: Danielle Egick

Danielle Egick is a senior majoring in public relations with minors in political science and international studies. Previously, Danielle has worked as an AA for Two Sisters Fina Cocina, Contempo Artisan Boutique and Jezebel’s Boutique. She is a member of PRSSA’s event planning committee and worked to plan and execute Electric State in 2012. She has worked in the human resources department at American Income Life and has previously held a social media and conversation driver internship with HappyValley.com. Danielle studied at University College Dublin, Ireland’s largest university, where she was a part of the International Student Society. Upon graduation, she hopes to apply her skills in the PR industry working with a news platform or magazine.

Introducing Our New Senior Consultant!

Senior Consultant: Zach Dugan Zach Dugan is senior graduating in December with a major in public

relations and minor in history. During his time with HVC he was Executive Director from 2012-2013, as well as an Account Associate from 2010-2012. Dugan is also involved with The Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA), where he has held the positions of Fundraising chair and Director of Creative Production. He is also an Ad/PR Student Liaison with the College of Communications. Recently Dugan interned with The Dow Chemical Company in the Public/Government Affairs departments in Midland, MI and Philadelphia, PA.

Meet the 2013-2014 Account Executives!

Melissa Conrad is a junior pursuing a degree in public relations/advertising with a minor in business. She works as an intern for Penn State Athletic Communications as the men’s golf media relations contact as well as a general student assistant. Melissa is also an interactive account management intern for Lion Menus, where she handles all social media and daily communication strategies. Over the summer, Melissa will work as a communications intern for Under Armour in Baltimore, MD. The essentials in her life include coffee, friends, family, exercise, and Pandora.

Samantha Monacci is a senior majoring in public relations with minors in English and recreation, parks and tourism management. Along with being an Account Executive for HVC, Samantha is on the Penn State Equestrian Team and a member of the marketing committee for the Penn State Student Programming Association. Previously, Samantha worked as an Account Associate for EcoCAR, the Penn State Computer Store, Nittany Co-Op, and Webster’s Bookstore Café. Samantha has previously held internships with Penn State Outreach, The Long’s Park Amphitheater Foundation and Dani Lombard Public Relations in Sydney, Australia. Upon graduation in May 2014, she hopes to work in the entertainment industry for a major brand or company.

Cheyenne Sexton is a senior majoring in public relations with a minor in media studies. Cheyenne is a Schreyer Honors Scholar, who focuses her work on social media and environmental communications. This is her second year with Happy Valley Communications, as well as with the Penn State EcoCAR 2 team. Cheyenne has held internships with Children’s Miracle Network at Penn State Hershey Children’s Hospital and Shipley Energy in York, PA. Cheyenne also enjoys teaching Zumba in her spare time.

Christina Tarantini is a senior majoring in public relations with a minor in psychology at the Pennsylvania State University. As a public relations major, Tarantini has been actively involved in the Public Relations Student Society of America and Happy Valley Communications. She is a dedicated member, who has worked hard to acquire the skills and knowledge needed to successfully grow as a PR professional,,and could not be more excited to be a part of HVC for her first year as an Account Executive. Tarantini has previously served as an Account Associate for the Penn State Computer Store, Nittany Co-Op, and Webster’s Bookstore & Café. When Tarantini is not in the classroom, you can find her in the kitchen cooking her favorite pasta dishes or scanning the latest

trends on Pinterest.

Brenna Urban is a junior public relations major with a business minor. This is her second year working with Happy Valley Communications. In the past, she served as an Account Associate for Jezebels and Blue IV. Brenna is also involved with many different organizations on campus: Phi Chi Theta Business Fraternity’s THON Chair, Penn State Football Recruiting Intern, and a PR/Marketing intern for Penn State Basketball and Baseball. This summer, she will intern on the International Communications team at the Little League World Series.

Rachel Wozniak is in her senior year as a triple major in public relations, Spanish and global studies. In addition to academics, Rachel has been the Director of Advertising for La Vie, the Penn State Yearbook, since her freshman year and has also been a PRSSA member. She began in Happy Valley Communications as a sophomore and was an account associate for Two Sisters Fina Cocina and Contempo Artisan Boutique during that year. In the fall of 2012, Rachel spent the summer abroad in Barcelona studying Spanish and the culture, returning to HVC in the spring as part of the Webster’s Café team. During the summer of 2013, she will be living in Pittsburgh interning for the Pittsburgh Penguin’s Foundation, coincidently her favorite hockey team.

Client Spotlight: EcoCar2 Penn State’s EcoCar took home first place in the year two competition in

addition to winning first place for overall communications plan. Account Executive, Cheyenne Sexton and HVC alumna, Taylor Kidd joined their EcoCar teammates at an awards competition last month in California. Sexton is now transitioning into Kidd’s former role as EcoCar’s Account Executive for Happy Valley Communications. Additionally, she will serve as the Communications Manager for the third and final year of EcoCar’s nation-wide competition. Congratulations to the entire Penn State EcoCar team and good luck in year three of the competition! Learn more about Penn State’s EcoCar2!

Happy Valley Communications is a student-run communications firm that exists to offer professional communications services to the community of Penn State and national campaigns. Established in 2009, HVC seeks to benefit students, faculty, and the community by strengthening the relationships between the firm’s clients and the general public. Happy Valley Communications (HVC) is a student organization that works to increase the experience of participating students. These students are expected to act in a professional manner and maintain professional standards when working with clients in order to create a model business environment.

To ensure that a professional environment exists, a faculty member acts as an advisor to the firm. The Faculty Advisor assists the firm by approving or suggesting changes on all work by its members, and by giving advice on client work and internal affairs.

Services and Clients

Happy Valley Communications offers local businesses and organizations the opportunity to promote their products and services for minimal cost. The services include meeting with the clients to determine their needs and expectations, promoting their company and special events, and producing written materials that are essential for their business’s operations and success.
