Reverse Raffle - Get Tickets Now

Waste Industries. Green Sponsors were Kilian Engineering, New Life Baptist Church, WIZS. Snack sponsor was Walmart DC #6091.This Captain’s Choice (Superball) tournament began at 12 noon with lunch followed by a shotgun start. Prizes were awarded for the top

three teams, with other awards for the longest drive, hole-in-one, and closest to the pin. Additional activities at the event included “Poker Fun”, the “Monster Launcher”, a putting contest and a Chippo Board Contest.

A dinner and awards ceremony took place immediately following the tournament.This year’s tournament winner was the Prim Residential Rentals team Ray Miller, Matt Jackson, Bubba O’Geary and Allen Ellis. Second

place went to the Union Bank team of Kenny Abbott, John Burns, Ray Pegram, Jr. and Brad Baldwin. Third place went to The Athlete’s Foot team consisting of Kirt Meadows, Bob Nelson, Gary Neathercutt and Heath Davis.

Closest to the Pin awards went to (Hole#11) Michael Gordian of the Maria Parham Health team and (Hole #4) Rusty Pace of the Vance Granville Community College team. Longest Drive winners were (Hole #1) Ivory Foster, part of the Mars Petcare team and (Hole #12) Finley Woodward, part of the Maria Parham Health team. Special contest winners were Kirt Meadows with The Athlete’s Foot team - winner of the Poker Fun Game, Russ Boyd with the Charles Boyd team - winner of the Chippo Board Game as well as the Putting Contest.

The Henderson-Vance County Chamber of Commerce along with the Henderson Police Department (HPD) and the Vance County Sheriff ’s Department are partnering again to host the third annual reverse raffle. Presenting Sponsor is Maria Parham Health.

This annual event benefits a program serving local underprivileged children called “Shop With a Cop” along with the Chamber of Commerce and its efforts to help local business. The event is scheduled for Saturday, November 10 and will be held at Henderson Country Club beginning at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are on sale now and include dinner for two, a chance at the $5,000 grand prize and a dance at the completion of the raffle. Throughout the evening, guests will be given opportunities to bid on various silent auction items as well as two reserved tickets which will be auctioned toward the end of the ticket drawing. Three reserved tickets will also be raffled during the course of the evening.

The “Shop With a Cop” activity will take place in December at which time members of the HPD and Sheriff ’s Department will take local underprivileged children shopping with local retailers for Christmas. A certain dollar amount of the proceeds raised will be set aside for each participating child. There has been a great turnout for the past two years and we are expecting no less this year. “This fundraiser allows us to do a lot of good for the local community with the proceeds and the HPD and Sheriff ’s office are always anxious to do what we can to help local children”, said Police Chief Marcus Barrow.

16 Educators Take Part in TEIThe 2018-2019 Teacher Executive Institute (TEI) program started on Thursday, October 18 with a dinner and orientation session

at Henderson Country Club. In its twenty-fifth year, the program provides classroom teachers, counselors and media specialists with opportunities to participate in seminars where leadership and management skills are taught. Participants visit a variety of businesses within the community where they will meet employees, tour the facilities, learn about the business and take part in seminars designed to broaden their skills base.

The overall intent of the program is to strengthen the partnership between business professionals and education professionals. Teachers and those in the business field will have the opportunity to understand each other’s role in preparing students to meet the challenges of the future.

Participants for this year’s TEI are: Jessica Ayscue (Aycock), Patricia Harris (Carver), Kristy Martin (Clarke), Kimberly Holtzmann (Dabney), Taylor Evans (New Hope), Jhaneille Downer (Pinkston Street), Pat Hughes (E.O. This year’s keynote speaker is Allison Capps, Assistant District Attorney for North Carolina’s 9th Prosecutorial District.

Allison Siler Capps grew up in Belmont, NC. She attended Peace College and received a B.A. in Psychology. Following Peace, she attended the Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law at Camp-bell University where she received her law degree.

She began her career as an Assistant District Attorney in the 2nd Prosecutorial District, work-ing for just over a year. She returned to the 9th District, (Granville, Vance, Franklin and Warren counties) where she had interned while in law school and currently serves.

As a part of the DA’s office, she has tried over 20 jury trials, ranging from DWIs to First Degree Murder cases and everything in between. She has received numerous awards from Crime Stoppers, NC Gang Investigators Assoc. and others.

Mrs. Capps is an active member of Delrayno Baptist Church, President of the Board of Directors for the Granville Education Foundation, participates in the Girls on the Run Program and in the NC Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics. She resides in Oxford with her husband, Jason, and their son, Luke.

Corbitt Preservation AssociationThe Corbitt Preservation Association hosted a Business-After-Hours (BAH) on October 16.The event was held at the Bennett H. Perry Jr. Museum located at 180 Church Street in Henderson. This beautiful historic home was

filled with historical information, smiles, laughs and warm handshakes throughout the evening. Chamber members and guests enjoyed an evening of learning about the history of Corbitt trucks and their roots in Vance County and enjoyed a selection of delicious appetizers and beverages.

The Bennett H. Perry Jr. Museum opened in October of 2015 and is the home of the Corbitt Museum as well as a museum about the City of Henderson and Vance County. The museum is open by appointment for groups and individual showings and is available to host group meetings as well. Nuestro Porvenir, Inc.Nuestro Porvenir held a ribbon cutting ceremony on October 11 to celebrate their grand opening. The business is a small family owned convenience store that is located at 939 W. Andrews Ave. Suite A, in Henderson. They provide bill payment services, pinatas, candy and other merchandise from different Hispanic countries and will be bringing more items throughout the remaining of the year. Henderson Fire Station - DowntownThe Henderson Fire Department held a ribbon cutting on September 21 to celebrate the new renovations at Fire Station #2 located at 205 N. Garnett Street in downtown Henderson. The building also houses the iconic Henderson Clocktower.Attendees were given the opportunity to tour the newly renovated fire department and adjoining municipal building that previously served as the police department. Fire department staff were also on-hand to demonstrate the bells and whistles of the stations new fire engine. The new model replaces one of the City’s older year models from 1990. The nearly half-million dollar fire engine is larger than the previous model and includes newer, faster technology and safety features.

Baskerville Funeral Home, LLCBaskerville Funeral Home held a ribbon cutting on October 17 to celebrate its grand opening and new Chamber membership. Nominate Citizen of the YearThe Henderson-Vance County Chamber of Commerce is currently seeking nominations for

the 2018 Citizen of the Year. This annual award honors an individual who has made a significant contribution and

demonstrated a commitment to the advancement of Henderson and Vance County. In order to be considered for this award, the nominee must be a resident of the Henderson-Vance County community, should be someone who enjoys a reputation for continuous community service in areas such as civic involvement, quality of life improvements, supportive of business and economic development and humanitarian issues. This contribution must be outside the realm of the individual’s occupation.

Citizens and Chamber members are encouraged to nominate persons they feel are deserving of this recognition. Nomination forms are available at the Chamber and should be submitted in writing to the Chamber office by Friday, December 28. The award will be presented at the Chamber of Commerce Annual Meeting and Banquet on January 31st at the Vance-Granville Community College Civic Center. On October 14, the Henderson-Vance County Chamber of Commerce along with The Daily Dispatch and WIZS Radio sponsored a Candidate’s Forum featuring the 3 candidates running for office of Vance County Sheriff.

The three candidates are: Democrat Curtis Brame, with almost 32 years with the Vance County Sheriff ’s Office; Republican Charles Pulley, who has 30 years with the Henderson Police Department; and unaffiliated Allen Simmons, who has 20 years with the Henderson Police Department.

Candidates discussed their indivicual levels of experience, the problem with drugs in Vance County, how they would restructure and run the Sheriff ’s Office and the need to unify residents and law enforcement in the community. Recurring themes among every candidate were the need for aggressive action on the area’s drug problem, the need for more deputies and more training for those deputies.

Questions for the candidates were submitted by the public in advance of the meeting and the event was broadcast live by WIZS.

Voting for the general elections is on Tuesday, November 6 but early voting continues through Saturday, November 3. Polls are open weekdays from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1p.m.
