    Counseling and Human Relations Program HostLecture by Dr. Kenneth Ginsburg on FosteringInternal Resilience in Teenagers

    According to theU.S. Department of Housing and Urban

    Development, overall homelessness in Maine increased by percent last year. The majority of individuals affected byhomelessness in our state are women and children. Losing home and living in poverty are just some of the few traumaexperiences that can adversely affect the psychologicaldevelopment of young children and teenagers.

    In an effort to support grassroots community efforts designassist youth at risk, the Counseling and Human Relationsgraduate program at Husson University announced today tis hosting a lecture featuring renowned pediatrician KenneGinsburg, M.D., M.S. Ed, on February 20 thfrom 2:00 p.m. 4

    p.m. at the Richard E. Dyke Center for Family Business. Dr. Ginsburgs clinical practice,

    teaching, research and advocacy efforts focus on strengthening teenagers by fostering thinternal resilience. His goal is to provide parents, professionals and communities withpractical approaches, supported by research, that will help children and teens both prosand thrive.

    Dr. Ginsburg is one of the nations leading experts in adolescent development, said DeDrew, Ed.D., Director of the Counseling and Human Relations Program in the School ofEducation at Husson University. His research has helped youth develop their own soluto social problems and helped clinicians more effectively serve their teenage clients.

    Drew continued: Professionals from a variety ofcommunity health-oriented disciplinealready registered to attend this event. The integration of Dr. Ginsburgs teen-centeredapproach into health practices here in Maine will positively strengthen children, familie

    area communities.

    This lecture is sponsored by the Maine Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics(MAAP) and hosted by the Counseling and Human Relations Program at Husson. Fundithe lecture was provided by the national AAP organization to the MAAP through a VisitProfessor grant. Additional support and organization is being provided by the MaineResilience Building Network; working in partnership with the MAAP. The event is free open to members of the public.

    More About Kenneth Ginsburg, M.D., M.S. Ed

    Dr. Ginsburg is a pediatrician specializing in adolescent medicine at the Childrens HospPhiladelphia and an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Pennsylvania

    of Medicine. He also serves as Director of Health Services at Covenant House Pennsylvanagency that serves the citys homeless and marginalized youth.

    In Dr. Ginsburgs adolescent medicine practice, he cares for a wide variety of medicalconditions while simultaneously addressing adolescent behavioral issues. His practicefocuses on social adolescent medicine a discipline that pays special attention to therecognition and prevention of social contexts and stressors that affect both physical andemotional health.

    Ginsburg is the co-developer of the Teen-Centered Method, a mixed qualitative andquantitative methodology that enables youth to generate, prioritize and explain their owideas. He has more than 100 publications to his credit, including 28 original research arclinical practice articles, five books, a textbook, and Internet-based video and DVDproductions.

    His most recent books are Building Resilience in Children and Teens: Giving Kids Roots

    Wings, published by the American Academy of Pediatrics and Letting Go with Love anConfidence: Raising Responsible, Resilient, Self-Sufficient Teens, published by Avery, PPress. He has appeared on CNN, NPR, TODAY, the CBS morning show, as well as theABCand NBC Nightly Newsprograms.

    With graduate degree programs in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, Human Relations,School Counseling, and Pastoral Counseling, the Counseling and Human Relations Proat Husson Universityprepares professionals interested in facilitating the healthydevelopment of youth and adults.     Audit Reports Available for AdvisorsFaculty Portal makes audit reports accessible

    Advisors, did you know that degree audit reports are now available to you through the FPortal? A degree audit report compares a students transcript against the students prorequirements, automatically tracking progress towards degree, removing the need tomanually track progress on a curriculum sheet.

    Degree audit reports are currently available for those students who are subject to the 22014 degree requirements. At this time the Registrars Office asks that you review your

    advisees degree audit reports to verify that courses are being applied in an appropriatemanner and please notify the Registrars Office concerning any discrepancies.Degree areports will be made available to students via the Student Portal during the Fall 2014semester.

    2014 Husson Research and Service Awards Call fNominations

    President Clark is pleased to invite nominations and applications for the 2014 ResearchAward and Service Awards. All full-time faculty and staff are eligible for nomination orapplication. Nominations are welcome from students, peers, or self-nomination; howeveach student or colleague can nominate any one (1) individual per award. Previous recare not eligible to apply within four (4) years of receipt of an award. The two awards arHusson Research Awardand the Husson Service Award, with service being to theUniversity or service to the Community.

    The Husson Research Award will be presented to a faculty member who demonstrates aachieves scholarly work as recognized by his or her peers. There are two Husson ServiAwards.     Husson University is pleased to sponsor a Global Scholars Program, an initiative designeforge global understanding and advance educational excellence. The program supports

    faculty member who wishes to partake in scholarship, curriculum development, travel aresearch activities that will help infuse a global perspective into the classroom. The sucapplicant will receive a $1,000 stipend and $2,000 for professional development expenssuch as materials and travel. Additionally, the scholar will be eligible for a single courserelease during one semester and to being expected to write and present on their experie

    The Global Scholars Program recognizes one faculty member each academic year. Interapplicants will be expected to submit a proposal not to exceed 500 words to their respeDeans by April 1st. The Deans will bring the proposals to the Deans Council. All applicawill be informed of the results of the decision by the Deans no later than April 24 th.

    The intent of the Global Scholars Program is to further the Universitys first key strategiinitiative of Delivering Educational Excellence Through Experiential Learning and Glob

    Understanding. It recognizes that educational excellence is fostered when faculty broatheir experiences, engage in scholarship, and bring those experiences and ideas into theclassroom for the benefit of students. Given the direct expectation that experience willpositively impact the delivery and content with the classroom, proposed projects shouldwithin the professional discipline, be a visible contribution to scholarship, and enhancecommunal awareness of Hussons global undertakings.

    The Faculty Development and Evaluation Committee of the Faculty Forum sponsors theScholarship of Teaching Community of Practice. The book to be utilized for Spring 2014Dilemmas in Teaching: Cases for Collaborative Faculty Reflectionedited by Chris M

    Anson, et al. Cases addressing issues about course management, departments, and thechanging culture in higher education should lend themselves to a lively discussion anddifferent approaches to common academic dilemmas. Meeting times will be the 1st andTuesday of each month starting February 18, 11am -12, Commons 215 (March 4 in Peab333H) .

    Utilizing a case based discussion this spring will allow all faculty to participate as theirschedules allow. Cases can be accessedhere.The case(s) should be read prior to the mebut are short enough that a few copies will be available to facilitate the conversation if tdoes not permit pre-reading.

    Husson and NMCC Sign Credit Transfer Agreeme

    Northern Maine Community College (NMCC) and Husson University have approved amemorandum of understanding that will facilitate the easy transfer of credits between t

    two educational institutions. This benefits students interested in pursuing a bachelors at Husson University on the NMCC campus or at other Husson locations.

    The signing ceremony, marking the beginning of this agreement, will take place on ThurFebruary 13, 2014 at the E. Perrin Edmunds Library on the campus of Northern MaineCommunity College in Presque Isle, Maine at 10:00 a.m.

    The agreement outlines admission and program requirements at Husson University forBachelor of Science degrees in Accounting, Business Administration, and Business andProfessional Studies. It also specifies which NMCC courses can be used to meet generalelective and major requirements within each of these degree programs. Individual courequivalencies listed by program are included in the agreement to assist in the advisingprocess.

    In addressing the relationship between the two organizations, Husson University's ColleBusiness Dean Marie Hansen said, "Husson University has enjoyed being co-located onNMCCs campus since 2006. This new articulation agreement provides students who successfully complete approved coursework at Northern Maine Community College inaccounting, business administration or medical office administration with a betterunderstanding of the transfer process.

    Hansen continued: Providing students with a clear trajectory for education beyond theassociates degree level is one of the benefits of our partnership with Northern MaineCommunity College. We hope every NMCC student will go on to further their education bachelors degree from Husson University after they complete their associates degree

    studies.

    This transfer agreement represents a continuation of our partnership with Husson to p

    increased educational opportunities to citizens of Aroostook County, according to DottMartin, NMCC Academic Dean. We feel confident our students receive a very firm founto continue their educational pursuits.

    Student Activities Brings Country Singer CraigCampbell to Gracie Theatre

    On Saturday, February 15, Student Activities proudly presented Craig Campbell live in cat the Gracie Theatre. The country singer, well-known for such hits as Family Man, Fiand Outta My Head, took the stage despite winter storms book-ending the event. Afteconcert, Campbell was kind enough to come out to the Darling Atrium and greet the fanpictures, and sign autographs.

    The Husson students working for Student Activities were helpful and welcoming to thepatrons. NESCom students working the concert were efficient and accommodating. The Production and Audio students NESCom continue to represent the institution with theprofessionalism and talent they showed from set up to tear down. We hope to continue such great experiences with the upper level shows Student Activities brought to campuspecial Thank You: Litho, Ken Stack, Eric Ferguson, Brave Williams, Pamela Kropp-AndeBarbara Babcock, Officer Tom Conlon, and the Safety & Security department.

    OvidSP (Wolthers-Kluwer) is a popular search engine for the health sciences. Iease-of-use exceeds that of PubMed and allows even novices to create powerfuliterature searches.

    EMBASE (Elsevier) is a commercial bibliographic database searchable within OBecause EMBASE indexes PubMed in addition to its own literature sources, you

    now search the worlds literature in nearly 8,000 journals.
