¾-tone down

Accidentals (including microtones) are valid for the current measure, but not in different octaves.Bendings, glissandi: always contains microtones if possible.

Grace notes are always played before the beat.

gradual change of timbre

Pronounciation of onomatopoetic syllables”sh” as in hush”sha” as in shallow”hu” as in hush”sa” as in sarcasm”ht!” A forceful attack with the help of the diaphragm. Articulate ”ht” with lips and

tongue.”s” as in once”ku” as in cookie”ka” as in cuddle

German and english words are from Brahms´s Lullaby

Flute

If the player does not have a B foot, play C4 instead of B3 (Scandinavian register: h → c1)

flz. Flutterzungeairy airy tone with audible pitchm.v. Molto vibratos.v. Senza vibratoalternate fingerings: alternate fingerings to achieve different tone colours. Trill bisbigliando: trill with different fingeringsMultiphonic sounds can be played with or without flutterzunge. Flutterzunge can be used to create better sound quality on the specific flute.

Multiphonic fingerings

Multiphonic fingering is from Levine, Carin & Mitropoulos-Bott, Christina: The Techniques of Flute Playing I. Bärenreiter.

PercussionPlay with nails. The sound should be as bright as possible and rich in overtones. Always release the cymbal immediately after damping unless otherwise indicated. The edge of the cymbal can also be muted with palm or heel of the hand to achieve brighter color. The cup of the cymbal is lightly muted with palm or heel of the hand. Play with knuckles. The sound should be as low and gong-like as possible and muted in overtones. Always release the cymbal immediately after damping unless otherwise indicated.

unmeasured tremolo

s(iu) ”whistletones” Subtle and quiet whistle. Almost like pronouncing letter s but try to find a bright whistling (not airy) sound. Fast alternation between i and u vowels, irregularly.

Let triangle stick bounce on surface ad lib. Follow the length indicated withrhythm values.

Friction Roll the cymbal and keep the stick still vertically placed on the surface. When played at quiet dynamics, let the stick touch the surface, do not press.

Whistle Percussionist can use his/her most audible whistling register.

Hush was first performed in Copenhagen 2015 by International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE): Alice Teyssier, flute and Ross Karre, percussion.
