About Supervision Supervision is recognised both within the literature and practice wisdom, to be a critical ingredient of effective and sustainable quality service delivery in the health and welfare sectors.
The role of supervision is to support and develop the organisation’s most valuable resource: the clinicians and workers who provide these services.
This suite of support services is aimed at helping organisations to develop, standardise, and/or evolve a supervision strategy that emphasises the needs of the clients, the organisation and the staff members themselves.

HURSTWOOD SUPERVISION
We provide a one-day foundation skills
workshop, followed by one or more
days you can customize from the
selection of topics on the next pages.
These topics, like the foundation
day, will all be further customized to
your specific needs.
The supervision training focuses
upon applied skills, including those
relevant to the needs of internal/ line-manager supervisors.
Our Services Supervisor Training
Supervision is not a natural skill for the
supervisor, and likewise, it is not a natural
skill for the supervisee.
As a result we can provide a half day
workshop to help supervisees develop
skills and understand their responsibilities
to get the most out of supervision.
It enables supervisees to gain a shared
understanding of the organisation’s
approach, as well as to learn not only
what they should bring to supervision,
but also how to be an active participant in the reflection process.
For those organisations where
internal support for supervisors is not
available, we can provide individual
(in person or by skype), or group
supervision, where the learnings of
the workshop can be reinforced as
well as being applied to challenges
in their real life situations.
Consultancy
Supervisee Training
Supervisor Training
Supervision
Consultancy involves developing a
strategic approach to supervision.
This typically commences by a
review of both the culture and
practice around supervision, the
service delivery context, the
clinical and support needs of the
client group, and the resources
available to support the
strategy.
Development of policies,
procedures and forms can also
be provided if necessary.

HURSTWOOD SUPERVISION
This half day elective will explore transference and counter-transference as applied to the supervisory relationship in the context of working with trauma. Participants will learn the basic principles of transference and countertransference, how to identify the opportunities presented and work through the challenges, in order to strengthen the supervisory relationship.
Boundaries, Transference and Trauma 3 hours
Training for Supervisors - electives
This module helps differentiate these types of relationship, advising when to adopt each.
It includes suggestions for how to set up each type, as well as an adapted model of GROW which is helpful in the human services sector.
Reflective case practice – 2 hours Building upon day 1’s introduction to reflective questioning, this module shares a further three approaches to facilitating practice reflection.
Particular emphasis is placed upon the use of naïve enquirer technique and mining questions, which help maintain the reflection experience rather than falling into problem-solving.
Challenging Behaviours in supervision – 1.5 hours
Supervision requires an alliance between supervisor and supervisee for it to be successful.
This module unpacks some different types of challenge that can threaten the process, and presents a 5 point strategy that can be used across most challenging behaviours in both supervisory and clinical settings.
Half day (3 hours) or full day (6 hours) applied supervision workshops can be designed around any of the following modules.
The times provided are an indicative guide only, and they can be expanded or reduced to suit your specific needs.
Coaching & Mentoring – 1.5 hours
Psychotherapeutic Supervision Frameworks – 3 hours
This half day elective is designed for participants affiliated to particular psychotherapeutic approaches (e.g. ACT or Psychodynamic Therapy) that would like to learn more about their associated supervision frameworks, with a focus on related supervision principals and processes.

Supervising unpaid workers – 1 hour Whether they are students for volunteer workers, unpaid staff can bring unique opportunities and challenges to the work. Topics covered include setting up the supervision relationship in an unpaid context, managing challenging behaviours, and supporting these staff.
Lived experience/peer staff– 1.5 hours Many staff have lived experience in the area they work. This may be incidental and kept private, or be overt in their work role (e.g. a peer worker).
There are responsibilities that supervision must consider in order to adequate support these staff. Topics include reframing the supervisor relationship, boundaries if a peer worker, attending to supervisee’s own clinical and support needs, planning in case of relapse, and integrating them as a peer into the team.
Group Supervision Skills – 3 hours
A ‘cultural lens’ is critical for supervisors given the diversity of contemporary work environments. Cultural differences between supervisor and supervisee may exist with regard to worldviews, communication patterns, and perceptions of roles.
This elective covers how to initiate cultural discussion in supervision, opportunities and challenges of supervising across diversity, culturally responsive models of supervision, and dimensions of competency.
Supervising Across Diversity – 2 hours
Peer driven group supervision – 1 hour
Group supervision enhances individual supervision providing a much broader forum for sharing strengths, experiences, and challenges.
The process of setting up a supervision group, the evolution of group process, contracting, structuring the session, and some of the common challenges are all addressed in this half day.
Not all organisations have group-supervisors, so this module introduces a modified narrative model for peer supervision that can operate without a supervisor.
It emphasising learning through shared experiences and is effective at balancing team dynamics enabling equal participation by all members.
Training for Supervisors - electives The times provided for each of these modules are an indicative guide
only, and they may be expanded or reduced to suit your specific needs.
