CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Miami Hurricanes head coach Al Golden announced Wednesday the signing of 26 student-athletes to play football at ‘The U’. Miami’s 26 signees feature 24 high school standouts and nine January enrollees.

Miami’s 2014 signing class is ranked No. 10 by ESPN, No. 11 by Scout, No. 12 by Rivals and No. 12 by 247Sports.

Among Miami’s 2014 signees are 11 ESPN300 recruits – Joseph Yearby (No. 23), KC McDermott (No. 36), Chad Thomas (No. 65), Brad Kaaya (No. 112), Trevor Darling (No. 115), Trent Harris (No. 133), Anthony Moten (No. 182), Kiy Hester (No. 196), Darrion Owens (No. 246), Darrell Langham (No. 259), and Braxton Berrios (No. 289).

Eight of Miami’s 17 signees hail from Miami-Dade County and three from both Broward and Palm Beach counties. The signing class features nine early enrollees – Berrios, Darling, Harris, Calvin Heurtelou, McDermott, Ryan Mayes, Owens, Yearby and Juwon Young.

ACC ACCOLADES Miami track and field has had several noteworthy performances early in the 2014 indoor season, but two student-athletes earned ACC Performer of the Week for their stellar showing.

Shakima Wimbley was the first Cane to bring the honor to Coral Gables this season, earning the award after she won the 400m and anchored the women’s 4x400 to victory at the Nittany Lion Challenge.

A week later, Alysha Newman gave the Hurricanes their second consecutive Performer of the Week when she posted the top pole vault mark in the NCAA. Newman, who set a new UM record and meet record, won the women’s pole vault at the Rod McCravy Memorial Meet when she cleared 4.31m.

2014 HOME TRACK MEETS After a challenging indoor schedule, Miami opens its 2014 outdoor season with the first of three home meets, hosting the Hurricane Invitational from on March 21-22. They will also host the Miami Invitational on March 29 and the Hurricane Alumni Invitational on April 12.

“It is always great to compete in front of our home crowd,” Miami director of track and field and cross country Amy Deem said. “Having three home meets gives us an opportunity to showcase not only our team, but also bring quality track and field meets to the university campus and South Florida community.”

Alysha Newman’s Hurricane debut was one she will never forget.

The sophomore donned Miami’s orange and green for the first time at the Rod McCravy Memorial Meet in Lexington, Ky., this past weekend and she climbed to the top of the school’s record book.

Newman cleared her opening height in women’s pole vault with a jump of 3.88m, breaking the school record previously held by Lauren Koutrelakos (3.20m, 2003). With her opening jump, the transfer from Eastern Michigan already sat atop Miami’s record book, but she was far from done.

“I went in there with one goal and my goal was 4.15m,” Newman said. “Coach [Jerel] Langley’s was 4.25m and we kind of met in the middle, saying it would be nice to start this season off where we ended last season, which was 4.23m.”

The Delaware, Ontario native continued to soar to new heights, winning the women’s pole vault with a mark of 4.31m. The jump not only topped her Miami record mark from earlier in the day, but also set a new meet record and put her atop the NCAA pole vault rankings for the 2014 indoor season.

“When I cleared 4.23m, I was happy with that,” Newman said. “Then we said ‘might as well go for the meet record.’ We always joke when he’s coaching me and he said ‘oh, you want that meet record today.’ I started laughing and said ‘yeah, let’s go for 4.31.’ We did and I got it.”

Newman’s effort earned her ACC Performer of the Week honors. She was the second Hurricane to earn the award this season, joining sprinter Shakima Wimbley.

“I was very impressed with Alysha’s performance,” Miami director of track & field/cross country Amy Deem said. “She’s had minimal practice since arriving at Miami so opening up basically where she left off last summer was great. We’re very excited about her. She is just going to get better as the season progresses.”

A second-team Indoor All-American in 2013, Newman was the third-ranked junior in the world last

year. She was the Pan-American Junior champion and set a meet record, clearing a personal-best 4.40m. She set Canadian Junior records in both indoor (4.23m) and outdoor (4.40m) pole vault and placed third at the Canadian Senior National Championships, clearing 4.00m.

While the accomplished athlete has established herself as one of the top junior talents in the world, the pole vault was not her first love. Originally, Newman was a star gymnast who loved floor exercise.

“I started when I was around six or seven and I went until I was 13,” Newman said. “Then I hurt myself and I got too tall and they said I had to stop and pick up something else.”

Newman was driven to succeed at an early age and that desire to be great has motivated her ever since. Her drive to succeed combined with her athletic ability have taken Newman to new heights, including a new indoor personal-best. But Newman’s goals go well beyond what she did at the Rod McCravy Memorial Meet.

“All-around I have a better (personal record), but indoor that was a (personal record) so that was exciting,” Newman said. “When I went for the next height Coach Langley said, ‘I really hope she doesn’t get this.’ I know had I gotten it that there would be a lot of pressure to jump even higher than that, but that’s what I want. I want that pressure. My goals are to always jump higher. The sky’s the limit to me. I feel like records are set to be broken. That’s my number one goal to break as many records as I can.”

Miami jumps coach Jerel Langley, who coached the standout pole vaulter as a freshman at Eastern Michigan, believes anything is possible for Newman.

“With her work ethic, I don’t think there is anything out of reach,” Langley said.

The highly ambitious Newman hopes her big jumps will lead her to achieve one of her major goals.

“I want to be on top,” Newman said. “I want that NCAA record. I want it in my name.”

SENIOR SEND OFFJulia Giampaolo, Alex Johnson and Ryan Shaffer wrapped up their Hurricane careers at the conclusion of the 2013 season. All three seniors were honored recently at the volleyball postseason banquet.

The trio recapped their favorite memories of their time with Miami volleyball, while head coach Jose “Keno” Gandara talked about how influential their leadership was to the program.

Gandara presented his departing seniors with frames to hold the University of Miami diplomas they will receive in May and thanked them for their contrubutions to Miami volleyball and the university community.

On a beautiful day in Miami, you often find people heading for the beach or taking their boat out for a relaxing day on the water.

But three members of the University of Miami volleyball team bypassed the sandy beaches and blue waters of the Atlantic Ocean, choosing to spend a picturesque South Florida day giving back to the community.

Savanah Leaf, Alexis Mourning and Emani Sims were at Dorsey Park in Miami’s Overtown neighborhood helping to paint murals honoring Negro League baseball players.

“We went there to paint murals on the walls to commemorate those baseball players from the Negro League,” Leaf said. “It was great to unite with other people and raise the well-being of the community by coming together for a community project.”

The three juniors were part of hundreds who congregated at Dorsey Park for a community paint day. The volunteers helped bring to life murals created by artist Kadir Nelson.

“It was great seeing him get into the community,” Leaf said of Nelson. “We also saw a lot of other important people in the community coming by and trying to work with others on the project. You saw different people from all walks of life working together so that was really great to see.”

One of Leaf’s professors encouraged her students to give back to the community and the 2012 Olympian helped put together a small group of Hurricanes to participate in organized by Urgent, Inc.

“I talked to our team and Emani and Alexis wanted to participate and volunteer,” Leaf said. “They were really nice to come with me.”

The experience was a positive one for the three standout volleyball players. For Mourning, the best part was giving back to a community she had only heard of and never seen.

“It was cool seeing that side of the city,” Mourning said. “It was only in this kind of secluded part that you don’t really know about and you go over there and its totally different. It was cool to be there with other people and help out.”

Sims enjoyed collaborating with so many different people working towards a common goal.

“It was a lot of fun,” Sims said. “We got to actually meet some really cool people. We got to talk to some of the artists who actually created the murals. We got to just mingle with the other people who were there. It so it was a fun experience and I really liked it.”

While student-athletes have a busy schedule, Leaf tries to make time for community service. The project at Dorsey Park was just one of many for the first team All-ACC selection.

“I’ve done community service before and it just feels great giving back to people,” Leaf said. “I enjoy helping people who can’t always help themselves like going to feed the homeless at homeless shelters and donating gifts or clothing. I always like doing stuff like that.”

The Hurricanes have been involved in the community in the past, volunteering their time at homeless shelters and participating in community service throughout Miami-Dade County. But Leaf hopes to get the team more involved

“We’ve done it in the past, but we’re trying to bring it back more,” Leaf said. “We’re trying to get back on it and this was a good start.”

W. Tennis Punches Ticket to National Team Indoors

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The Miami Hurricanes women’s tennis team punched its ticket to the ITA National Team Indoor Championships with a 4-0 sweep against LSU on Saturday to win the Coral Gables portion of the ITA Kickoff Weekend.

“I think we raised our level significantly from yesterday,” head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews said. “We were put in a position yesterday where were playing two teams that were ranked much lower than us, but were coming in with some really solid freshmen, a lot of new blood on their teams.”

The Hurricanes won the doubles point with wins from Kelsey Laurente and Melissa Bolivar and a tiebreaking thriller that saw the 29th-ranked duo of Monique Albuquerque and Clementina Riobueno come out victorious.

“Doubles itself, we just played better,” Yaroshuk-Tews said. “We were paying attention to details, playing cleaner tennis, and we were able to push through at the end on both courts.”

The No. 2 doubles team was the first pair to clinch its victory, a 6-1 win against LSU’s Ella Taylor and Ariel Morton. Meanwhile, on court three, Brittany Dubins and Stephanie Wagner were bat-tling it out against Gabrielle Otero and Abigail Owens.

Trailing 5-1 and on the brink of LSU evening the score at 1-1, the 55th-ranked team in the coun-try surged back to tie it 6-6. But before they could finish the match, Albuquerque and Riobueno finished off Joana Vale Costa and Skylar Holloway to give Miami the doubles-clinching win.

“We started off a little slow on No. 3 doubles, starting off 5-1 on the scoreboard,” Yaroshuk-Tews said. “We were able to make some minor changes on 3 and 1. We were able to turn the match around.”

It didn’t come easy for Miami’s number one doubles team either. Albuquerque and Riobueno were down in the match 3-1 before tying it up at three games apiece. After exchanging a couple wins and the tiebreaker was forced, the Hurricanes showed their dominance and pulled away for a 7-3 win in the tiebreaker to take the match.

“I was real happy with the girls in terms of being unselfish in doubles, especially when it came down to the wire,” Yaroshuk-Tews said. “Nobody was rushing to try and get off the court.”

Fresh off the intense doubles win, Albuquerque wasted no time getting out to a comfortable 3-0 lead against LSU’s Owens. The Tigers’ freshman did battle back to win three games, but Albu-querque cruised to a 6-3 set win. In the second set it was much of the same with Albuquerque notching another 6-3 win.

With two wins down and two to go, the Hurricanes led in all remaining singles matches and at that point became a race to the finish line.

“We always need to pay attention to details. With this format, it becomes magnified,” Yaroshuk-Tews said. “One set of good tennis from yourself or your opponent and you have a ball game on your hands.”

64th-ranked Laurente was the next to clinch her victory, winning in straight sets 6-2, 6-3 against LSU’s Noel Scott.

Just a few moments later, Bolivar clinched her match in a very similar fashion. Playing against LSU’s Holloway, who she had faced earlier in her doubles match, Bolivar bolted to a 6-3, 6-1 win to solidify Miami’s spot in the ITA National Team Indoor Championships.

Canes Ranked 9thSKILLMAN, N.J. –The University of Miami women’s tennis team checked in at No. 9 in the ITA Women’s Team Rankings on Wednesday. In addi-tion, two players were listed in the singles poll and two doubles teams in the doubles poll.

Stephanie Wagner debuted at No. 32 in the singles poll, jumping 20 spots from the preseason rankings that were released in August. Also remaining in the poll was Kelsey Laurente at No. 64.

On the doubles end, the duo of Monique Albu-querque and Clementina Riobueno came in at No. 29 and Brittany Dubins and Wagner were ranked 55th.

Life as a student athlete at Miami is…amazing because you get the best of both worlds as a student and athlete.

If I wasn’t playing tennis I would be…probably just sitting in my house—or training really hard so I could be playing tennis

When I was six years old…I was a firecracker—I was so energetic all of the time and all over the place. I was always playing outdoors and doing anything that I would.

Hobbies outside of tennis include…playing the piano. Playing the piano is really important to me. I have a piano in my house and I play it whenever I get the chance. Other than the piano I enjoy almost all outdoor activities. Swimming, playing volley-ball—but just because I like them doesn’t mean I’m good at them (chuckle).

This upcoming season is…is going to me memo-rable. We are coming back with so much more fire than last year.

When I played tennis as a kid I pretended to be…Tennis was never serious growing up—it was always just more for fun and as a hobby.

My celebrity crush is…Ryan Gosling

I chose Miami because…It just felt like the right choice. Being close to home, having amazing training, training outdoors every day—it’s the best environment

If I had a million dollars…I would probably like to give some to charity, but other than that I’m not sure what I would do.

Best moment at Miami so far in my career is…NCAAs in 2013 when I won the clinching match against UNC because at that moment it was still undetermined if we were going to win.

WHITTY HONORED The University of Miami women’s rowing program had one of its members honored at the ROWONTARIO Conference this past weekend in Toronto. Sophomore Alison Whitty was recognized for her success at some of Canada’s most prestigious regattas. The St. Catharines, Ontario, native won the U/19 Ontario and Canadian Henley Championship over the last two years and moved up to U/23 this summer and won both the Double and Quad at the RowOntario Championships and Canadian Henley Regatta. It was his first year competing in that category. “The coaches and the rest of the team are proud of Ally for this well-deserved award,” Miami head rowing coach Dave Sanderson said. “It is wonderful to see UM rowers racing and succeeding outside of the college season.” Whitty’s success on the water has also helped Miami in her time rowing with the Hurricanes. Last year, the freshman sat at the 3-seat in the Open 8+ at Head of the Hooch that placed second, as well as bow-seat in the Championship 8+ that placed third at Hooch. In the spring of her freshman year, Whitty was a member of the 1V8+ that won the Cal Cup at the 2013 San Diego Crew Classic. She also helped the Canes place fourth at the ACC Championships. Whitty’s sophomore season is off to a strong start. She sat at the 7-seat in the Championship 8+ at Head of the Hooch that placed first. In addition, she sat in the 1-seat in the Championship 4+ (A) that placed second at Hooch. Miami rowing is back in action on March 8, 2014 when it will scrimmage against the University of Michigan. The Hurricanes will host UConn on March 22 in their first official races of the spring season.

Frida Carlsson likes to win.The people in her hometown of Vanersborg,

Sweden might describe Carlsson as “mycket konkurrenskraftig” or highly competitive.

The freshman’s drive to be the best has already helped her become one of the top rowers on the 2013-14 University of Miami rowing team.

Carlsson was a member of the crew that took first place in the Championship 8+division at the 2013 Head of the Hooch with a time of 16:07.7. She also contributed to an eighth place finish in the Championship 4+ at the 2013 Head of the Hooch with a time of 18:16.6.

“I love winning,” Carlsson said. “It was fun and I like competing with my teammates.”

She also won Miami rowing’s annual triathlon. The event consists of 7500m on the ERG or ergometer, a machine used to simulate the action of rowing, doing a workout on stairs and finishing a 1600m run around the track at Cobb Stadium. Carlsson accomplished the feat in 1:04.32 to place herself atop the leaderboard.

Carlsson has enjoyed her time in Miami. After growing up in Sweden, her first taste of the United States has been a good one.

“It’s been interesting to come to America because it’s my first time for me,” Carlsson said. “I like the whole college life and student-athlete thing. It’s been so fun. I don’t regret it at all.”

The freshman has had a great experience since she arrived in Miami prior to the start of the Fall semester. Carlsson cannot help but get excited when she thinks of all the positives associated with her new home.

“The weather, I never have to think about being cold,” Carlsson said. “And we get so much help from everywhere and I’m not used to that.”

Carlsson is an accomplished sculler that has brought home medals to her home club at Vanersborgs Roddklubb from regattas throughout the country. But the formerly individual athlete has had to learn what it is like to be part of a team.

“I always ran a single and not in a team, so that was the biggest difference to come to a team and adjust to being a teammate,” Carlsson said. “I didn’t think I could do it that well as I did, but I like being a teammate.”

One of the biggest adjustments for Carlsson has been learning to row with others. In the past, she could make adjustments to help herself. Now she must adjust according to what is best for her boat.

“I’ve always been doing things that I think is the right thing for me,” Carlsson said. “Now I do stuff where maybe it doesn’t include me that much and it is more about improving the team. That’s hard to understand at first. My instinct was always to do what’s best for me.”

Carlsson represented Sweden at the 2012 Junior World Championship in Plovdiv, Bulgaria and she has already gotten her Hurricane career off to an excellent start.

But all of her success has not made her complacent. Carlsson is always working to get better at her craft.

“I have a lot to improve in my technique, especially on the erg,” Carlsson said. “I feel like I have a lot to improve, if I compare myself to my teammates. The erg is my weakest point.”

As Carlsson prepares for her first championship season, she envisions being part of the group that takes Miami rowing to unprecedented levels of success.

“I want to go to NCAAs with Miami and win there as a team,” Carlsson said.

The desire to be the best is something Carlsson cannot diminish. She wants to take her team to the top of the collegiate rowing summit. But she also has individual goals to accomplish at Miami.

“Individually, my dream is to stroke,” Carlsson said. “I want to stroke the boat, that’s just what I want to do. Maybe that’s not best for the team and if that is the case, then I don’t think I should do it. But my dream is to get there. I want to be the perfect stroker.”

LECANTO, Fla. – The No. 33-ranked Miami Hurricanes women’s golf team opened its spring season with a third-place finish at the six-team Florida Challenge.

Hosted by USF at Black Diamond Ranch, the Hurricanes shot 15-over 591 in the two-round event, finishing nine strokes behind winner UCF (6-over 582). Florida State finished second at 8-over 584. Florida finished fourth at 17-over 593, FIU in fifth at 28-over 603 and host USF in sixth at 55-over 631.

Florida State individual Alex Milan won the tournament by one stroke, shooting 2-under 142.

“It was our first event out of the spring - not bad, but not great,” head coach Patti Rizzo said. “The girls looked good throughout the day. I think it’ll be a good spring season for us.”

Freshman Daniela Darquea and junior Leticia Ras-Anderica were Miami’s top finishers, as both tied for seventh overall at 3-over 147. The duo

– along with sophomore Kailey Walsh – carded the Hurricanes’ lowest first-round score with a 73.

“It was a good warm-up for the spring season,” assistant coach John Koskinen said. “We saw a lot of good things and know what we have to work on as we prepare for UCF.

“We will make adjustments and be ready in two weeks,” Koskinen said. “Overall, a solid start to the spring.”

Junior Rika Park tied for 14th at 5-over 149. Park carded Miami’s lowest second-round tally of the day with a 1-over 73. Freshman Delfina Acosta finished two strokes behind Park at 7-over 151, tying for 21st overall. Three Hurricanes tied for 27th overall at 9-over 153 – Walsh, Lauren Riehle and Carina Cuculiza. Sophomore Christina Ocampo tied for 37th at 16-over 160.

Miami’s first three-round spring tournament will be the three-day UCF Challenge, which will be held Feb. 9-11 in Sorrento, Fla.

The University of Miami men’s tennis team has signed the sixth-best recruiting class in the country for the fall of 2014, as ranked by the Tennis Recruiting Network. Included in the panel of voters are national tournament directors, members of the media and other experts. With two first place votes, the Hurricanes are one of only four teams that received a first-place vote. “We are proud to attract this type of talent to the University of Miami,” said head coach Mario Rincon. “We will have a deep team with high expectations, and they will continue to improve until it is time for them to join our team in August.” Miami’s recruiting class includes homegrown talent and international commitments, including Christian Langmo, Piotr Lomacki and Alexander Fahnehjelm. Christian Langmo is a blue chip recruit from Boca Raton, Fla., who won the USTA Regionals Plaza Cup. He was a finalist at the 2013 Daytona Beach International Tennis Federation (ITF) and a quarterfinalist at the 2013 South Carolina ITF. He chose Miami over interest from Florida and Georgia Tech. Piotr Lomacki, from Poland, is currently ranked No. 1292 in the ATP ranking and No. 126 on the ITF juniors world ranking. In 2013, he won the Ozerov Cup in Russia and was a quarterfinalist at the Great Britain Future in October.

Alexander Fahnehjelm comes to Coral Gables from Sweden where he was the No. 6 junior player in the country. He won the 2013 doubles at Bytom, Poland ITF and was a finalist in doubles in Hillegom, Netherlands ITF 2013. “This group joining us in the fall has the character, competitiveness, work ethic and leadership skills to continue the legacy that our current and previous student-athletes have established,” said assistant coach Mark Dickson. “Our program is attracting many of the most highly recruited student-athletes and building momentum on its way back to the top of collegiate tennis.” This No. 6 recruiting class is Miami’s first top-10 rated class by the Tennis Recruiting Network since an eighth-best ranking in 2010. “It is exciting for our program to be recognized for having one of the best recruiting classes in the country,” Rincon said. The top five recruiting classes are Stanford, South Carolina, Kentucky, Duke and Alabama.

Lauryn Williams is headed back to the Olympics.The former University of Miami track star was one of six women

named to the US Olympic Bobsled team. Williams, who previously competed in three Summer Olympics as a sprinter, qualified for her first Winter Olympics. She becomes the second Hurricane to qualify for four Olympics, joining diver Jose “Chemi” Gil. Williams is also the first Cane to qualify for a Winter Olympics.

“We are so proud of Lauryn in making the Olympic team,” Miami director of track & field/cross country Amy Deem said. “When she is determined to achieve something, she is one of the most driven and competitive athletes I have ever been associated with.”

A two-time Olympic medalist in track & field, Williams will look to earn her first bobsled Olympic medal just months after taking up the sport. She first dabbled in bobsled in July, but placed third in the national push championships just one week later. Williams’ career in the sport take off since then.

A nine-time All-American at Miami, Williams earned her first bobsled medal, a silver, on Dec. 7 at the World Cup race in Park City, Utah and claimed her second silver on Dec. 14. The former Hurricanes standout earned a gold medal on Sunday in Austria and learned later that day that she would be representing the United States in Sochi.

Joining Williams in Sochi are drivers Jazmine Fenlator, Jamie Greubel and Elana Meyers, as well as push athletes Aja Evans and Lolo Jones.

Williams has had success with all three drivers, but Sunday’s pairing with Greubel led to her best performance in the sport to

date. The tandem blazed down the track twice, combining for a time of 1:46.28 that helped them finish atop the podium at the end of the day’s racing.

“I had no idea what was in store for me this season,” Williams said after winning the race in Igls, Austria. “I just wanted to come in with positive energy and help out. This is the first time I’ve been a part of a true team sport, and there’s someone else counting on you. You can’t let that person down, and that’s what drives me. It’s very important to give everything I have whenever I’m on that start line.”

The three-time track and field Olympian won a gold medal in the 2012 Olympics as part of the U.S. 4x100m relay team and took home a silver medal in the 100m at the 2004 Olympics. Williams is also a three-time gold medalist at the World Championships and won the NCAA Championship in the 100m in 2004.

The U.S. women have won a medal in every Olympic Winter Games since the sport was introduced in 2002. Jill Bakken and Vonetta Flowers were victorious in 2002, Shauna Rohbock and Valerie Fleming claimed silver in 2006, and Erin Pac and Meyers earned bronze in 2010. The women collectively earned 12 medals in the first seven World Cup races and are on track to continue the program’s history of success.

The XXII Olympic Winter Games are set to begin Feb. 6 in Sochi, Russia. Opening Ceremonies are scheduled for Feb. 7, while women’s bobsled begins Feb. 18 at the Sanki Sliding Center.

The University of Miami baseball team picked up three preseason top 20 rankings this week, and will enter the 2014 season ranked in every major college baseball poll.

The Hurricanes were rated No. 16 by Baseball America and No. 20 by Perfect Game in the preseason rankings from those respective publications released Monday afternoon. Miami added a No. 17 ranking in the USA Today Sports preseason Top 25 baseball coaches’ poll released Wednesday.

Miami was ranked No. 13 by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper in the publication’s 2014 preseason rankings released in Decem-ber.

The Hurricanes return a number of key contributors from a team that finished 37-25 overall and earned the program’s college baseball-record 41st consecutive NCAA tournament berth in 2013. Joining the returning nucleus is a recruiting class ranked among the best nationwide. The group was rated No. 4 by Collegiate Baseball and No. 6 by Baseball America – its highest ranking from the publication since 2006.

Six teams from the ACC, the most in the nation from any con-ference, were ranked in the USA Today Sports coaches’ poll.

Baseball Picks Up Three Top 20 Rankings

Fan Fest Set for Sat., Feb. 8Get ready to kick off the 2014 baseball season with the Miami Hurricanes Sat., Feb. 8 at Fan Fest presented by First National Bank of South Miami.

Fan Fest, free and open to the public, begins at 4 p.m., and will feature inflatables for children, fan batting practice, face painting, tours of the locker room, a Select-A-Seat event and more. The team autograph session - the only opportunity to get a 2014 team poster - begins at 4:30 p.m.

WQAM Announces Baseball Broadcast Schedule560 WQAM, the flagship station for the Miami Hurricanes, will broadcast 15 Hurricanes baseball regular season games and all postseason action in 2014, the university announced Thursday.

WQAM will be at Alex Rodriguez Park at Mark Light Field for an Opening Day matchup with Maine on Feb. 14, and will also call the final game of the series against the Black Bears. The station will be broadcasting contests from February through May, including full series against Florida (Feb. 21-23), Notre Dame (April 19-21) and North Carolina (May 15-17).

Preseason events leading up to Opening Day include the annual First Pitch Banquet (Feb. 6) and Old Times & Alumni Games (Feb. 8).

The 2014 First Pitch Banquet will feature a keynote address from four-time MLB All-Star and three-time World Series champion Mike Lowell. In addition, there will be an auction featuring memorabilia and other Hurricanes merchan-dise, a presentation by head coach Jim Morris and a multi-course dinner.

The Miami Hurricanes women’s basketball team shocked 6th-ranked North Carolina on the road Sunday, beating the Tar Heels 83-80 behind a career-high 27 points from Adrienne Motley.

Holding off the Tar Heels and a screaming Carmichael Arena crowd, Mot-ley converted five of Miami’s final seven field goals down stretch to seal the Hurricanes’ upset road win.

Miami (12-10, 4-5 ACC) opened up the game with a sensational first half, using a 22-4 run to take control of the afternoon affair. The Hurricanes shot the lights out of Carmichael Arena in the first half, registering a 56 percent clip from the field and 44 percent mark from behind the arc.

The Hurricanes used their sharp-shooting and freshman point guard Motley to build up a 19-point lead at the seven minute mark of the first half. But in a game of runs, UNC (17-5, 5-3 ACC) stormed back and reduced the Miami lead to six points as the teams went in the locker room at halftime.

Motley led all scorers in the opening period with 12 points on 5-of-8 shoot-ing from the field. Sophomore Keyona Hayes also found her stroke, notching eight points while converting on four of her five attempts.

Out of the break, North Carolina continued their run and took back the lead, 45-44. After a jumper from Diamond DeShields gave the Tar Heels the lead with 15:27 to play, the Hurricanes flipped the lead once again.

Time after time, the Hurricanes seemed to have an answer for a Tar Heel surge. With Miami holding onto a three-point lead with just over five minutes to play, Motley tied her career-high scoring mark on a mid-range jumper that gave the Hurricanes a five-point lead.

Down the stretch, Motley was unstoppable. With the Hurricanes holding a two-point lead with just over a minute

remaining in regulation, Motley drove baseline as the shot clock was winding down and missed short on a three-foot jumper, but Hayes was there for the put back to give Miami a four-point lead.

The Hurricanes converted on the free throws down the stretch to solidify the upset win.

Motley finished her phenomenal performance with 27 points, the highest any Hurricane has scored in a game this season, and eight rebounds. Hayes was the other Miami player scoring in double figures, recording 14 points including the crucial tip in in the final minute.

Motley Named ACC Rookie of the WeekGREENSBORO, N.C. –Adrienne Motley was named the ACC’s Rookie of the Week,

the conference office announced Monday.The freshman guard from Newport News, Va., had a stellar week in a matchup with

No. 3 Duke and an upset win against sixth-ranked North Carolina on the road Sunday. Motley averaged more than 20 points per game last week, including a career-high 27 points against the Tar Heels.

Motley finished the week with a 64-percent shooting clip from the field and 3-for-5 from behind the arc. In addition to her scoring output, Motley managed to grab 7.5 rebounds per game for the week and turned the ball over just five times.

On Sunday at No. 6 North Carolina, Motley poured in a career-high 27 points—the highest single-game scoring mark of any Hurricane this season. Motley countered every Tar Heel punch with a jump shot of her own, accounting for five of Miami’s last seven made shots and 14 of Miami’s final 22 points.

Against North Carolina, the ACC’s leading defensive field-goal percentage team, Motley shot the ball with 71 percent accuracy from the field (10-for-14) and 6-for-8 from the charity stripe.

Motley, the Hurricanes’ leading scorer in ACC play with 13.3 ppg, has now scored in double figures in seven straight games and in 11 of the team’s last 12 contests.

Former Coach Dunn Named an ACC Women’s Hoops Legend

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Former University of Miami women’s basketball coach Lin Dunn will represent the Hurricanes in the 10th annual class of ACC Women’s Basketball Legends, announced Wednesday by the league

Dunn, who coached the Hurricanes from 1978-87, will be honored at the 2014 ACC Women’s Basketball Tournament, which will be held March 5-9 at the Greensboro Coliseum.

In her nine years at the helm of the program in Coral Gables, Dunn accumulated a 149-119 record.

In 25 years as a collegiate coach, Dunn amassed a record of 447-257 with seven NCAA Tournament berths and one Final Four appearance.

Following her time in the collegiate ranks, Dunn coached the Portland Power of the ABL before becoming the first head coach and general manager of the WNBA’s Seattle Storm. Dunn is currently the head coach of the Indiana Fever, which she guided to the 2012 WNBA Championship.

Dunn will be inducted into the National Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame in June of 2014.

The Legends will be honored at the annual ACC Women’s Basketball Legends’ Lun-cheon on Saturday, March 8, at 1 p.m. in Greensboro.

Miami wraps up a three-game homestand on Feb. 8 when the Canes host NC State at 2 p.m. at the BankUnited Center in Coral Gables, Fla. Miami faces a quick turnaround when the Canes travel to Tallahassee to face Florida State on Monday, Feb. 10 at 9 p.m. The Canes are 11-11 overall this season and 2-7 in the ACC at the midway point of the league schedule.
