The Muscular Dystrophy Association issued fun arrest warrants for local business and civic leaders on June 15, 2011. This included Amy Donaldson, the Administrator of Ad-miral's Pointe Nursing & Rehabilitation who exceeded her $1600 goal, and 36 more Erie County leaders. The group of community-minded residents was put “behind bars” for MDA’s signature Lock-Up fundraiser at The Sandusky Yacht Club.

Accused of having big hearts and being heavily armed with kindness, these “jailbirds” helped raise more than $20,000 for families affected by neuromuscular diseases in the Sandusky area. In order to be released, each jailbird’s “bail” was set at $1600 and the mon-ey was raised by encouraging friends, family, co-workers and business contacts to make contributions to MDA.

The funds raised will help MDA assist hun-dreds of local individuals and families living with muscular dystrophy, ALS and related muscle diseases throughout North Eastern Ohio.

The Lock-Up also will help send Ohio youngsters to MDA’s summer camp at Camp Cheerful in Strongsville , OH where all ac-tivities are designed for kids with limited mobility, and many volunteers provide the one-on-one assistance needed to optimize participation. Some activities include horse-back riding, swimming, sports, and arts and

crafts.MDA is the nonprofit health agency dedi-

cated to curing muscular dystrophy, ALS and related diseases by funding worldwide research. The Association also provides un-paralleled health care services; advocates for the families it serves; and invests significant resources educating the medical and scientif-ic communities, as well as the general public,

about neuromuscular diseases affecting more than 1 million Americans.

MDA maintains a network of some 200 hospital-affiliated clinics — 38 of which are designated as MDA/ALS centers — through-out the country. In Cleveland , OH families can receive excellent care for progressive muscle diseases at the MDA Clinic in Metro-Health Medical Center .

The Inspiration 5K Fun Run/Walk is a unique event. Part fundraiser/part Huron Parks & Recreation program, this event inspires us at Parks & Recreation year after year!

The Inspiration Run is a non-competitive event that draws family, friends, and groups who come to support the cause, or just use the event as a kick-off of their own inspiration to live a healthier lifestyle. We see many families who make it a “family day” by participating in the run and then planning a family pic-nic in the park afterwards. Local businesses contribute as well by donating water, fruit & snacks for our participants; and volun-teers help out at water stations and registration.

The Story Behind the Run….Aubrey Miller and her friends

were talking about how hard it was for them to stay motivated to stay in good shape and be healthy. Like many of us, they couldn’t find the drive they needed to get back to a healthy lifestyle. Then they remembered how much Michelle Saunders and Ryan Foss used to motivate them. Michelle and Ryan were killed in an automobile accident in March 2002 at the age of 19. They decided to use Michelle and Ryan’s inspiration as mo-tivation to get in shape and be healthy so they organized the first Inspiration Run with the help of Huron Parks and Recre-ation. The Inspiration Run 2005 was a great success!

Each year since then the In-spiration Run has spotlighted a person or cause to be the Inspi-

ration Story for that year. Since 2005, The Inspiration

Run has raised money for several different causes including: Saun-ders/Foss Memorial Scholarship, Juvenile Diabetes Association, Diabetes Youth Services, Kirsten Berger Fund, Laptops for Kids (Cleveland Clinic Foundation-Children’s Cancer Unit), Brenda Wilhelm Fund, Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Sara Jane Bartlett Nursing Scholarship, Huron Football Scholarship Fund, The Tom Stallings Fund and The Kenneth J. Kessler Me-morial Fund.

If you so choose, additional donations for any of the above causes can be made and will be accepted in the donation area near the race check-in.

Our Inspiration Story for 2011…

This year, the Inspiration Run will honor Asher Nikolajevs and his family and his courageous battle against Batten’s Disease. In order to help off-set growing financial costs, this year, 50% of Inspiration Run 2011 registra-tion fees will go to Asher Niko-lajevs and his family.

The Inspiration Run will take place on June 25, 2011 at Fabens Park.

Check-in/Registration from 7:00 a.m.-7:45 a.m., with the run at 8:00 a.m.

Registration Fee $10. Pre-Reg-istration is preferred.

2011 Inspiration 5K Fun Run/Walk

The Huron River Fest com-mittee is pleased to announce in celebration of the 20th An-niversary of the festival the 1st Annual Critter Crawl will take place on Sunday, July, 10 2011 at 10:00 a.m. Registration will begin at 9:30 a.m. at Lakefront Park in Huron. This event is sponsored by The Chapman Insurance Group. This year’s Grand Marshal will be our dear friend “Snoopy”.

The “Crawl” (Pet Parade) is approximately one mile in length. Pets and their owners can expect to walk at a leisurely pace. Please bring water provi-sions for your pet. Owners are responsible for pet emergencies.

Parking is available at Lake Front’s lot and the surrounding neighborhood streets on a first come basis.

Parade Route: Kick-off is at 10:00 a.m. promptly. The pa-rade will exit the park onto Wall St. Parade goers will proceed right onto Main St. Right onto South St. Right on to Ohio St. Remain on Ohio St. all the way back to the park.

The theme for this year’s event is �Huron Howl� Oween Parade�

Critter Crawl organizers retain the right to deny participation to any animal due to behavior or health concerns.

Around TownIt’s a sad day for ALL of Huron.After reading in Wednesday’s paper the

shenanigans that took place at the Huron Council meeting Tuesday evening regard-ing Police Chief Majoy’s departure from office, I was sickened. I applaud those who spoke up in Johns defense, and council should be ashamed they allowed such an injustice to take place on their watch.

John is a born and raised Huronite and a clear Huron success story, He followed the footsteps of many of his relatives in Law enforcement and took it to the highest pos-sible level with higher education, a flawless record, and a great role model for kids. My third grade daughter from St. Peters school said it was not fair for Chief Majoy and re-called having him visit her class just two weeks ago during a school program. Her wisdom is dead on and the folks in Huron should not stand for this unjustified action.

The citizens of Huron have no contract with Andy White and Council to prevent them from telling the truth and expressing their dissatisfaction with their elected offi-

cials. If the elected officials in Huron want to remain in office they should listen to their constituents. They should start by lis-tening to how council should address Andy White and the precarious position he has placed the city in with respect to the loss of a great public servant. I would like to think that Mr. White also is an “at will” employee serving at the pleasure of council. The vot-ers of Huron should demand through their council representatives the resignation of Mr. White.

While I reside on Kelleys Island, I grew up in Huron, Our business is headquartered in Huron, and recently my wife and I choose Huron St. Peters School for our children. We made these decisions because Huron is a great place and a safe place in part be-cause of the leadership of John Majoy.

It’s time for the GOOD PEOPLE OF HU-RON to stand up for THE GOOD PEOPLE OF HURON. Where I come from, it’s what we do.

The Twenty-Fourth Annual McCormick Junior High School Academic Dinner was held on Thursday, May 19. The purpose of the annual dinner is to recognize those students who have succeeded academi-cally. To be invited to the dinner, a stu-dent must have been on the honor roll for three quarters. Inclusion on the honor roll requires that a student have a 3.5 GPA with no grade lower than a B. This year, there were 93 seventh- and eighth-grade students who achieved this goal and were invited to the academic dinner.

The evening began with a few words from McCormick principal, Mr. Chad Carter. Those in attendance were then treated to a vocal solo by Allison Brownell, a flute solo by Alison Litz, and a clarinet ensemble performance featuring Ashtyn Stadler, Renata Kurtz, Olivia Iannantuono, and Maggie Nelson. The performances were followed by a dinner prepared for the students and their parents. After din-ner, each student was individually rec-ognized and presented with a certificate from the President’s Education Awards Program. The evening concluded with an invited presentation by Mrs. Anne Hin-ton. Mrs. Hinton, retired director of the Huron Public Library, attended her final three years of high school in Huron and raised her daughters here. She spoke to the students about reaching beyond their comfort zone to try new things and, most importantly, about kindness. After hav-ing a somewhat difficult time in school and experiencing bullying as a youth, she challenged the students to be kind to ev-eryone and said, “Don’t dismiss the late bloomers- you never know who they will become.” Further, Mrs. Hinton tearfully

stated, “Kindness costs you nothing. It en-riches those you touch.”

McCormick Junior High Honors Academic Achievers

Annapolis, MD – Midshipman Mi-chael John Moberg, son of Douglas and Kathleen Moberg, graduated from the United Sates Naval Academy on Friday, May 27, 2011. Mi-chael graduated from Huron High School in 2007. While at the Naval Academy, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineer-ing and graduated in the top 10% of his

class. During his four years, Michael was awarded the CDR Palmer Award for the highest standing in Mechanical Engineer-ing, the Admiral McNitt Award for sailing, and was a Captain of the Baltimore-Wash-ington Collegiate Fencing Conference Champion Naval Fencing Team. He was commissioned an Ensign in the United States Navy and will be attending Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA to complete a Masters Degree in Mechanical Engineering. Following this assignment, Ensign Moberg will enter Nuclear Power School in Charleston, SC before his as-signment to a U.S. nuclear submarine.

The Firelands Historical Society, Norwalk, OH, in conjunction with the Huron County Master Gardeners are sponsoring their annual Norwalk garden tour. The tour will feature seven in town back yard gardens. The gardens are very different, but equally lovely and relaxing. Several of the gardens surround century homes.

The tour is scheduled for July 9, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., rain or shine. Tickets are $10 and go on sale June 20. Amy Di Filippo presented Certifi-cates of Recognition to each volunteer, acknowledging their personal commit-ment and dedication to the residences of the Parkvue. Parkvue is very proud of the wonderfully caring volun-teer staff and truly believes that the volunteers play such a large role in the lives of the residents and bright-en the smiles of the staff as well.

Aided by the cheerful and energetic members of the Activity Department, those attending helped themselves to various flavors of ice cream topped by an assort-ment of favorite fixings and enjoyed the keyboard magic of Jerry Simmerer featured tunes of the 40‘s and 50’s adding a special touch of evening enjoyment.
