Dear Mr. Geary:

Thank you very much for your report of reception.

This is to verify your reception of our station on the morning of June 4, 1946 from 3:25 to 3:35 CST.

We were very happy to receive your report and regret the delay in answering. This was due to the extremely busy time we had during our initial period on the air and to the very large number of reports we received.

At present we maintain a regular operating schedule of 19 hours a day, going on the air at 5:00 AM CST and signing off at 12 midnight. Our frequency test period at present is every Monday morning from 2:20 to 2:30 AM CST.

Once again let me express my appreciation for your report and hope that you will be able to receive us many more tines in the future.

Dear Kermit,

Thanks so much for your very complete reception report of 6 Dec 63. It's a pleasurd to hear from you, as we

haven't had a report from Pennsylvania for some time.

It is interesting that interference came from WAMY, Amory, Miss., as usually reports indicate more QRM from WCLS, Columbus, Ga., on 1580 kc, with 5 kw.

This is the longest distance report we've had since a through going-over of our Collins 20V2 xmttr. and Proof -of -per lance tests in late November 63.

According to our station logs, your information sub- mitted by letter dated 7 Dec 63, and recieved here in

Talladega on 12 Dec 63, is correct.

I was the announcer/engineer on duty at the time, and the morning man to whom I referred was Hank Fannin ...one of the Deep South's most Popular County Musicians.

Dear :'err. Geary,

This letter is to verify your reception report on October 24, 1956. We are pleased that you could hear our station during our regular broadcast day.

We operate our transmitter by remote control, using a Rust type remote system. Our transmitter is the new Collins V-2..We have a shunt fed tower 200 ft. with a 24x24 ft. copper screen at the base of the tower and a 8gt copper screen under the slant wire, which is about 50 ft. long.

We have had good luck with this remote control operation..this is our first time to use remote, we think one of the reason for the success o8 this type` operation is the excellent stability of the Collins transmitter..

We say thank you for your report and good luek to you.

Yours truly,

Dear Kermit:

This letter will confirm your reception of radio station WKEA (AM)

on Tuesday, November 9, 1982.

WKEA increased power from 1,000 watts to 5,000 watts in August of this year and we have had several reports of reception from several hundred miles away.

I think the most impressive thing about your reception report was the fact that we were receiving very little interference from WKAP in an adjacent frequency fourteen miles away.

Thank you again for your letter and good luck to the Walnutport, Pennsylvania DX Listening Post.

Dear Sir:

Ter'' r. 21,

Thank you very much for report of reception of MAUD during our equipment test broadcast of December15&r16 1947. Your report has been carefully checked against our logs and found to be correct.

Our setup here is very conventional, Gates 250-1C transmitter, Gates CB -L desk, 31-R console and the usual sates limiter and studio compressor. Only unconventional thing about this layout is the ground system of which we are a little proud. It consists of 180 radials spaced at two degrees, and running 320 feet. Not marry 250 watters have that much space for a ground. system. The antenna is a 150 foot Slaw -Knox self -supporter.

1Ne began our regular schedule (18 hours daily) December 21, and will now be on the air for frequency check the second Wednesday of each monthat 3115 a.m, EST, for frequency check. if you happen to hear any of these check broadcasts, we will be glad to hear from you as to signal strength, quality, etc.

Thanks again and DX to you.

Thank you for your correspondence of February L, 1969 which informed us that you received WKACts transmission on 1080 Kilohertz on February 3rd.

Please forgive the long delay in returning this varification, but the matter has just been brought to my attention.

We are pleased to hear that WKAC's transmission was intelligible in Eastern Pennsylvania, and we are delighted that you tuned us in. I might add that your loging was, for the most part, correct, and I

can certainly understand the few errors that it contained.

It was a pleasure to have tuned to the Wayne Forsythe Show, and I hope that you will be able to receive our signal again.

Thanks for your report on reception of Equip- ment Test Progream of W M L S on May 4th, 3:12 to 3:45 AM EST. Your report checks with our program log for this period.

W M L S will be pleased to have reports sub- mitted on any future test transmission and we assure you that these reports are valued highly by our engineering staff.

Just a word about our ec!u.ipment. All mF-. jor items are Raytheon with wxception of transcription reproducers. We are using G. E. pickup units with Gray Research Co. arme and equalizers. Our antenna was fabricated in Birmingham Alabama by Crane Co. It is constructed from Steel pipe with a base diameter of 12 inches tapering to four inches pipe at the last section. Total heigtht is 205 feet. The tower is shunt excited and from all reports seems to be very efficient. Cur transmitter efficiency has run better than 76%.

Sylacauga is located in East Central Alabama and at the present the population is estimated about 18,000. For many years the main industries were textile and marble, however, with the establishment of the Alabama Ordinance works at Chil- dersburg Alabama about 12 miles north of Sylacauga, many new industries began development. Now under ccnstruction are fa- cilities for production of paper, rayon and celeophane, just to name a few. W M L S is Sylacauga's second broadcasting station, the first one having been constructed in 1945.

Dear Mr. Geary:

10,000 WATTS

Thank you for your kind letter, notifying us of your reception of WASG's signal! As you know, WASG is a brand new AM station, the largest in our area, and we were delighted to hear from you!

WASG uses a Harris BC -10H AM transmitter, which is a high level plate modulated 10KW medium wave broadcast transmitter, using parallel RF output amps and push-pull modulation. The transmitter employes solid state RF circuitry up to the IPA and solid state circuitry up to the modulators. It is tuned to a frequency of 11.40 Kilocycles at a power output of 10KW. The tower is a 500 ft. AGL, at a sea level of 641 Bonanzer. WASG uses a 5/8 wavelength with an excellent ground screen in a very wet & marshy area, there- fore we gain an additional 15KW to bring our ERP to 25KW.

This is to verify your reception of WASG on November 1, 1981.

Thank you once again for your report!

Dear Mr. Geary:

I am pleased to confirm your reception of WABT! on Friday, January 4, 1980. I am also a bit astonished to confirm such reception. It is obvious from your reception log that we were putting more than the usual skywave over Walnutport. It is especially interesting that such a skywave was created during daylight (for us) hours. Congratulations on the quality of your antenna system and receiver.

We use no "modulation boosters" or other audio processing equipment, relying instead on careful equipment operation and maintenance. We transmit omnidirectionally on 5,000 watts of power. The two other stations you heard, WVOV and WCFL put out 10,000 watts and 50,000 watts respectively.

Please find enclosed a copy of our station brochure/rate card.

BARNEY GRANT - Station Manager

January 12, 1988

I want to thank you for listening to Clear Channel 670, WYLS, and

for taking the time to write us. We are very excited about our new frequency and the response we have received from it. In addition

to hearing from you, we have heard from Haggerstown, Maryland; Vinita,

Oklahoma; and Houston, Texas.

Let me tell you about WYLS. We are owned and operated by the Grantell

Broadcasting Company of York, Alabama. Mr. Barney Grant is our owner

and general manager. After seventeen years on 1350 kilohertz, WYLS

signed on at 670 khz on October 31, 1987. We are powered by a Collins 820 E/F-1 transmitter at 5000 watts non -directional. Our tower is

402 feet with an FM antenna side -mounted.

Your data is correct according to my programming information of Monday,

January 4, 1988. We appreciate your kind remarks about our music. We are programming music for our parents. We feel that the age group

from 40 up has been left out in radio, so we decided to give them

something they could enjoy. Enclosed you will find two bumper stickers

which we thought you might enjoy having. Again, Thanks for listening and writing to us.

Sincerely,

Tim Craddock Program Director

Dear Mr. Geary, I wish to verify your reception reports as of April

20 th and 21 st. We have had a few reports from the eastern part of the country,But yours is the first from Pa. and you know how pleased we are to receive it. You can see we

wpuldn't get any from any of the western statrs, since the' station XEW is on our frequency with their high powered station.

I would like to tell you a little about our set up here at WOZK, We use a collins 20-V 1KW transmitter with a 52 ohm transmission line working into a shunt fed tower. The tower is a stainless guyed 245 ft. job. with 120 ground radials 437 ft.long. We also have a ground screen around the tower 24x32 ft. with a 8 ft. screen under the slant

wire from the tunning box to the tower. The time of operation here at WOZK will be day time

only, from local sunrise till sunset. We have collins equipment in the studios also and our studios are located in the building with the transmitter. We are sold on collins rquipmrnt as you may gather. We have a nice size building located only a short distance from town, which makes it

nice' for the people that will work at our station. The city of Ozark is located in the southeast part of

Alabama, and is located about 4o miles from both the Flordia and Georgia lines. So we hope to cover part of both states.

I wish to thank you for your nice letter and the best of luck to you.

Dear Kermit;

Thanks very much for your very nice reception report of :N P I D on the morning of November 25, 1953.

I am very glad to verify your report. I think that it is the nicest that we have ever received.

It kinda makes me feel good to get reports like that. I rebuilt all of the equiptment here. That does mean all too-- Turntables, console, limiter, and transmitter.I started to putting this place together last Jan. 5 and we made our first equiptment test Jan. 12, 1953.'Ve

had a composite transmitter then. It was just about like a Raetheon. Since then (last ?day) we have changed transmitters. We now have a Gates BC -1E that I have re -worked. In case you would like to know -- W P I D started regular broadcasting Jan. 22, 1953.

In our remote studio; We use a remote amplifier (Gates Dynamote) and feed it on a phone line. The line is not of a good quality from Centre to Gadsden. It is about class "F". Of course from there it

gets better. The phone company in Centre is privately owned and of

course they don't have broadcast quality lines.

Best wishes to you and we hope to have you with us on 1280 as often as is possiable.

Well, here we are at long last. I am truly sorry that I didn't get this letter off to you at a much earlier date but if you have a duplicate copy of your letter and will check on it, you will notice the date ou it was Nov. 27th which is just about a month before Xmas I am sure you are well aware of the amount of traffic a radio station must carry during the Xmas season and for that reason it seemed that I just couldn't find time to get a note back to you.... I might add however. that since the new year has arrived, I nearly have enough time between spots to go fishing. Ha: I shouldn't laugh about it as it certainly does the of pay check no good. However we have a lot to be thankful for and can't complain too much.

If I may be permitted, I would like to call you Kermit from here on out as I detest formalities. Ok? Let me just say that it certainly was swell hearing from you and of course it's always nice to kid= know we are reaching out so well. It might interest you to know that on Nov. 23rd and Jan. 2nd we also received letters from txx two hams in New Zealand whose address and call letters you will find inclosed for whatever use you may tare to make of them.

I am not a ham myself although I hold a 1st class ticket but I might add that I am thinking very muck of getting my hams: ticket and should I do this it certainly wold be the greatest of pleasure to give you a buzz. The reson for the above tit is that my first love in radio has not been enrdneerin.g but pgm. directing and sales as I have found that seems to be where the most of that long green stuff comes from. Ha; I am at present the Program Director here at WJAM but as just mentioned...the ham bug is beginning to nibble at me so bay get started into that as I ha ?veral friends here and in other parts of the country I have worked that are also prodding me to get on the e,ir.

Must close for now and might I add that it will always be a pleasure to he -r from you at anytime...I' ll try not to be.

February 13 , 1969.

I have pleasure in reporting that I enjoyed good reception of your Radio Station WVOV during its regular broadcasting schedule on the evening of Wednesday, February 12, 1969. I tuned in "The Voice of the Tennessee Valley" at 5:16 P.M., Central Standard Time, and heard your program of popular recorded music, 20-20 news, weather forecast and advertisements, until you signed off and left the air at 5:301 P.M., , C.S.T. , following the playing of "Dixie". WVOV was trans- mitting on its assigned frequency of 1000 kilocycles, and put a fine signal up here into the Northeast on this occasion.

The signal which I received from WVOV on 1000 kc/s. was strong and clear, rating a report of 25 db. over S-9 as indicated on the signal -strength meter. Fading was shallow and had little effect upon the consistent clarity of my reception. There was no atmospheric static, and your powerful transmission consistently overrode all trace of interference during the g; -hour period of my reception. As the result of such favorable conditions, your broadcast was heard with excellent clarity (Readability -5) , affording good, enjoyable program reception at this distance from Huntsville of 74.0 air miles. Your carrier was sharp, clean-cut, and fully modulated. The tonal quality of both speech and music was excellent. It was a pleasure to hear VIVOV reaching out in such fine shape during its regular broadcasting schedule, and you are to be congratulated on the power and efficiency of your transmitting equipment.

I heard WVOV on my Hammarlund HQ-1$OC communications receiver (1$ tubes) . My antenna is a single -wire inverted "L", 200 ft. long and 30 ft. high, extending toward the southeast, with the lead-in to the receiver coming off the northwest end. I am situated in the eastern part of the State of Pennsylvania, 60 miles north of Philadelphia and 90 miles west of New York City.

Please confirm my reception of station WVOV, The Voice of the Tennessee Valley. I shall be happy to receive your reply, kindly verifying the fact that I heard your broadcast as reported above. Return postage is enclosed for your reply. As proof that I was tuned to WVOV, I give the following log of program items to which I listened:

Dear $irs

This letter is to verify your reception of the test program broadcast

by WHit', January 15, 1957, 3130 3 4:00 CST.

Also we would like to thank you for your fine DX report

It appears that CMBL, Havana, gave WIU' more interference than had been

anticipated, but we were pleasantly surprised to reoeive so many

DX1er reports from all over It seems we were received in every

section of the country, including the west coast, although we were

fading considerably there..

WHAT is a fairly new station, having been on the air since October 25,

l956, so as you can see these DXter reports were of more than just general interest to na.

Want to thank you again for the concise reports and hope you will for-

give this form letter as we were swamped with DX1er letters and this

seems the quickest way to send you your verifications.

August 21, 1948

Mr. Kermit Geary R. F. D. #2 Walnutport, Penna.

Dear Sir:

Very pleased to receive your letter of August 16, 1948. In fact, if you will look at your log of previous stations I think that you will find one from me listed under Wirb, in Enterprise, Ala. Mr. Williams, Mr. Bruner and yours truly were employed with WE BB in construction and during the first three months of operation. Unfortunately, things didn't work out so well there because Mr. Williams left about one month after going on the air due to unfavorable working conditions. I should have left but as the saying goes women can do funny things. In other words, I had something to stay for. But this is probably boring you so I'll get down to things that should interest you more. I may be mistaken about you DXing WIRB but I am pretty sure that you wrote in for a confirmation and I may have overlooked answering it.

You are correct in your DXing Radio Station WGYV on the morning of August 16, 1948. Your log agrees with the station program log kept during our equipment test period. The station went on the air for equipment test August 10, 1948. At this time I would like to tell you some of the difficulties encountered. We had Mr. Claud Gray, Consulting Engineer to check our frequency the first night as/went on. We were only 143 cycles off frequency on Crystal #1 and 94 low on #2. Well, we didn't have a phone installed at that time and we had to go to town and call fhim from there. We tried to lower #1 and bring up #2 but no success. The next night we were 1300 cycles low on #1 and 905 low on #2. We gave the owners notice that we would not put the transmitter on the air again unless the telephone company supplied us with at least a temporary phone so that we could call Gray and work with more efficiency. Well, we got 6 citations from the FCC monitoring station in Powder Springs, Ga. They were waiting for us at 1:00 the first morning when we cut the carrier on. Those boys were on the ball. The trouble we found out later in the second night of equipment tests was in the crystals themselves. Number 1 was out of the slot in the chamber and was turned sideways and oscillating improperly and number #2 must have been damaged in shipment to the station because the top screw for varying the crystals

was stuck down in the plate of the crystal.

By the way, this is sunday night. As 1 was typing this, to you we

just had some trouble with the relays and couldn't open any of the mikes.

The Chief Engineer left town a few minutes before and I just had to fix

it then and I forgot about your letter. Well, the other Engineer we have

is fresh out of school and he gave the transmitter a good twist on all of

the tuning controls during the testing(frequency check) period last night

and when I came on this morning I had to tune it and leave the neutralization

as near correct as I could possibly do so without taking it of the air.

That proves that Gates makes a good transmitter because I was afraid that

we had paracitics(probably misspelled) oscillations and putting a signal

all over the bdst. band but when I checked it downtown there wasn't any

change in quality or spurious sideband operation. So I have run it un -

neutralized all day and it remained steady until about 2 hours ago but

then it started varying all over the place but stil nolding to 1400 kcs.

I could have taken it off the air but as long as it stayed on 1400 kcs and

rut out any kind of signal I was going to run it. Well have to reneutralizej

it tonight.

Well, this has probably bored you but I think that this should be more

than enough to confirm your Dxing. I'm still sleepy from missing all the

sleep during construction plus this headache today not knowing whether

it was going to stay constant. Excuse the double space on this page.

Best Regards,

We lnutrort, Fenn.

Dear Sir:

Thank you very much for your report of reception of

our test broadcast. From the information submitted we feel

sure that you heard our station and, therefore, hereby con-

firm your reception of our signal.

Just in case you are interested here are a few tech- nical and other details about the "Voice of Cullman" and the

city of Cullman.

The city of Cullman is located approximately forty- seven air miles North of Birmingham on U.S.Highway No.31 (Birmingham -Nashville Highway) and on the main line of the

L.& N.Railroad. It is the center of one of the finest and richest farming sections in the state.

The city's population is made up entirely of white people --something of an oddity for a town of the deep South. The present population of Cullman is approximately eighty- five hundred and in the county of Cullman there are approxi- mately sixty thousand people and of that sixty thousand only about one per cent are colored. We mention this as being un- usual and in no way a reflection on colored people.

Cullman County is one of the largest cotton producing counties in the state; it is the largest poultry producing county in Alabama; one of the largest in production of truck and garden crops and the original strawberry center of the South.

So much for the community and now about the equip- ment.

We applied for AM and FM facilities at the same time, however the FM application was granted earlier and we began that operation on August 6,1949. The equipment is Raytheon throughout with the exception, of course, of the

frequency and modulation monitors. Our tower is a Wincharger with a 10 1/2 foot Raytheon FM antenna mounted atop it for

a total height of 269 feet; the antenna site is approximately

800 feet above mean sea level; the tower is grounded and we

are shunt feeding it from the AM transmitter. A 1 5/8 inch

Coaxital transmission line feeds the FM antenna. The ALT

transmitter is Eaytheon's RA 1000, the FM transmitter an

RF 250; ground system consists of a 24 foot expended copper

mesh screen and 120 Radials of No.10 copper wire buried in

the ground, extending a distance of 330 feet in all directions.

The associated equipment, limiter, console, etc. are

Raytheon. We are using the Associated Transcription Library with Western Electric type 109 reproducting equipment and

General Electric variable reluctance pick-up for phonograph records. The line between the studio (which is located in

the heart of down town Cullman) and transmitter (2.7 miles

East of town) is equalized to 15,000 cycles. We have made every effort to obtain the finest of quality and we are proud of the many reports of good fidelity..

The undersigned partners are the sole owners of the

"Voice of Cullman" and we both devote our full time to its

operation.

We hope this information is of interest to you and again thanks a lot for your report.

CONFIRMATION OF RECEPTION IRCA DX Test - Monday, October 23, 1995

To: KERMIT GEARY 1266 Riverview Drive Walnutport, PA 18088

This letter will confirm your reception of WDJL-AM, 1000 kHz. during the special DX test broadcast on behalf of the International Radio Club of America (IRCA) on Monday morning, October 23, 1995. The test was conducted with an output power of 10,000 watts using our daytime (3 tower array) directional antenna pattern - which is almost completely omnidirectional except for a flat, minor lobe to the North. For your information:

Transmitter courtesy of: Harris Corporation Modulation courtesy of: Optimod Studio control board courtesy of: RCA Music courtesy of: My personal CD library Test tones & Morse code courtesy of: A Panasonic touchtone phone & a souped -up mike.

During the test, we received telephone calls from Dave Gasque in Orangeburg, South Carolina (who said he was hearing us loud and clear), Ed Rausch in Cedar Grove, New Jersey (he heard Morse code identifications only), and Robert Wein in Long Beach, California (who had 4 people at his home trying to hear the test, but could only hear a high-powered Mexican station).

WDJL-AM, formerly WTAK-AM, was purchased by Mr. William R. (Bill) Jones on August 1, 1995. We operate from sunrise to sunset as a daytime -only station, and our format is Al Ham's "Music Of Your Life", which we receive from the Westwood One Network.

As a DXer since 1976, I was thrilled to be able to do this DX test - and give back to the hobby a small part of the enjoyment it has brought me for almost 20 years.

Thank you for your reception report to let us know you heard the WDJL DX test. Enclosed is a coverage map, a station information sheet, a list of reception reports received for the test, and - since you've been dying to know - a list of the song titles and artists we played during the test. Thank you for your reception report.

Sincerely,

DEAR MR. GEARY,

THIS IS TO CONFIRM YOUR RECEPTION REPORT OF

WVNN ON DECEMBER 6, 1988.

I'M SORRY FOR THE DELAY BUT THEY KEEP ME PRETTY BUSY

AROUND HERE AND TAKING TIME FOR ANSWERING QSL REPORTS

IS A LUXURY. I REALLY SHOULD DO IT MORE OFTEN AS WE

GET QUITE A FEW FROM THE EASTERN SEABOARD.

I HOPE THE DELAY WILL BE FORGIVEN. WE ARE GLAD

YOU STOPPED BY. DO IT AGAIN WHEN YOU'RE IN THE AREA.

Dear Kermit,

Thank you very much for your report of reception of WEZB I am very sorry that you ande to wait so long to get a veriy. What with all the rash of putting the station on the air is the only excuse I can give for the fist couple of months that you had to wait. After that, there is no reason what soever why you had to wait for this letter. The only reason that you're getting it now, is that I have been made "DX Coordinator" and it8s about time that this report went out. Please except my apologys on the matter. OK'

Your report corresponds with our log exactly. Please except this letter as a VEKIFICATION of you having heard WEZB from 1:10 am to 2:00am CST on September 1,1953.
