Grace and peace be to

you from a great God

who makes life worth liv-

ing. We have completed

our Summer. God has

brought us through. There

has been much attempted,

experienced and enjoyed.

We appreciate the efforts

of all who participated in

the various activities of

the Summer. There has

been so much that we all

have done and experi-

enced, and for that we are

blessed.

I want to wish our graduates, God’s love as they

make their way to “big school.” I wish them, and their

parents, a great education, as they learn to live and

grow as never before. I pray that they find good

churches where they can serve, and maintain their

spiritual nurture. I have been so proud of our youth as

they have grown in and with this ministry. May God’s

grace protect, and direct, throughout this school year.

This year saw our first professional athlete. May God

bless he, and his family, as they also face a new en-

deavor.

I would like to say a few words about membership.

The essence of membership is a serious commitment

to represent Jesus Christ in our local community to-

gether. That is why the first question I ask persons

who come to unite with the church, “Will you support

this church?” Membership involves identifying with

fellow believers in their joys and their sorrows, in their

struggles and successes, in their labors and their lei-

sure, and in the ministry of Jesus Christ. Familiar

words like family, teamwork, and friendship all de-

scribe aspects of the membership experience. We must

have true membership as we go forward through the

remainder of the year. Our numbers have been down in

recent months, but we intend to be faithful in provid-

ing positive spiritual nurture of those who come, and

hope they will bear witness to the spirit, and positive

nature of our ministry. We need your support, and

your faithfulness.

In my study of the New Testament I have discov-

ered Acts 2:42, "They devoted themselves to the apos-

tle's teaching…” It is our participation in the study of

the word, and living according to those principles that

will help us to be a better church.

The strength of Progressive Union is that its pastor

is touchable so we can improve ministry. I want to

know you better, and am willing to share my life. I

will have to be out of town some weeks, but will al-

ways try to be in place on Sundays. God is using me to

bless other ministries, and I welcome the opportunity

to share as God has blessed me.

The next few weeks will be very demanding; Com-

mittees and auxiliaries will complete their final plans

for the new year 2015. God expects us to go forward

and be about the business of the Kingdom. Help us

keep Progressive Union ever focused on its mission. I

need your help to enable us to be “a church in the

word, making a difference in the world!”

“Making a Difference in the World” Part 45

Submitted by James E. Smith

We just finished a week of events focused on

Men’s responsibilities. Discussions included parent-

ing, teenagers, sex, crime and Godly solutions. The

Sunday Men’s Day services addressed the topics:

“Raising A Dead Generation” and “Get On Up”.

Now that we have the Word, what are we, specifi-

cally the men, going to do with the Word? Faith with-

out works is dead. Action speaks louder than words.

Victory over a situation doesn't come until we take

action.

Just like an Marine Corps recruiting expression:

Progressive Union is looking for a few good men.

When men step up and take control we will start

“Making a Difference in the World”.

Our very own Brother James E. Smith (not to be

confused with Deacon James L. Smith) was recently

recognized for his work with the Aid to Inmate Moth-

ers (AIM) program. AIM is a statewide program and

provides transportation to children whose mothers are

incarnated in the state women prisons in the Mont-

gomery area. Brother Smith is the coordinator for

North Alabama and Progressive Union is one of the

participating churches. Churches participate by volun-

teering vans/buses and drivers on the second Saturday

of each month to transport the children to the prison.

James recently provided back to school supplies to

the 14 children that AIM service from our area. He

was presented the pin shown below and a couple of

thank you cards, one from Larnetta Moncrief, AIM

statewide assistant coordinator, and one from the

Townsend children who are transported by AIM and

received the school supplies. Progressive Union is

thankful for the ongoing work and leadership that

Brother Smith provides and also to the drivers who

volunteer their time and make this program a blessing

to so many. If you are reading this article and would

like to become a part of AIM please contact Brother

Smith or call the church office, 256-534-8266, Mon-

day-Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and leave your

name and contact information.
