Speakers to Come in February
Grades 1-6 will have a presentation by the Harbor House February 21-23 in their classrooms.
The presentations are developmentally appropriate and the focus is on kindness, acceptance,
tolerance, and healthy relationships. More information about grade level focus will be coming
in a letter soon.
Grades 1, 3 & 5 will hear a presentation by educators at the Sexual Assault Crisis Center on
Thursday, February 16. Their presentations are held in individual classrooms and are also de-
velopmentally appropriate. They focus on safety, including safe touch. These presentations
support our school counseling curriculum. Please look for the note in Friday’s folder.
As always, parents are welcome to join us if their schedule allows. Teachers, the office, and
Mrs. Weitermann, school counselor will have schedules closer to the presentations. Please
feel free to contact Brenda Weitermann, School Counselor ([email protected])
for further information or regarding any questions or concerns you may have at this time or

The LEAP (Learning, Enrichment, and Athletic Programs) Link is an electronic flyer site that contains up-
coming community activities, events, programs and opportunities for students and families. Parents can
access and review flyers and print them if they are interested in the information. The LEAP Link can be

We’ve just started second semester and are half way through the school year. Much has been accomplished in the first
semester and we will continue our work forward with the same ambition and commitment.

Updates and information about Huntley could be found on both of these sites. If you don’t find what you’re looking for, please free to contact school as well. A friendly reminder about students’ attendance and how parents/guardians can help. Please come into school to sign in your child when he/she is late or when you need to pick up your child early. Each student is allowed 10 days of ab-sences for the entire school year. More information can be found at http://www.aasd.k12.wi.us/parents/attendance .
We certainly want our school to be welcoming and safe for all. When dropping off or picking up students, please be
mindful to not park or stop in front of the school where buses are loading and letting our students off. There are signs
to help identify these areas. Thank you for your partnership in helping our students be safe.
As many of you already know, our winter weather in Wisconsin is unpredictable. Please keep in mind should we have a 2 Hour Delay, students should report to the school no earlier than 10:10 AM. This include Late Start days as well. There will be no supervision prior to this time and no staff at school should school be canceled due to weather condi-tions. This includes all school business and events. Please refer to our Appleton Area School District Homepage for school closing information due to extreme cold or other reasons for school cancelation http://www.aasd.k12.wi.us/ or for more information on school closure information at http://www.aasd.k12.wi.us/parents/school_closure_info .

AASD Junior Math League We have the results of the fifth and sixth grade math league competition. Congratulations to all the students who participated in the first rounds. Huntley had 12 students participate in the cluster Level Competition at the Grand Meridian! We applaud your love of math, your competitiveness, and your willingness to work hard and grow your brain!
Both our 5th and 6th grade teams won in their respective cluster! They will be moving on to compete in the District Level Competition at Kaleidoscope/Roosevelt Middle School on Feb-ruary 13th.

Elementary Late Start Before School Program Registration Form for 2016-2017: Semester 2 Due Friday, February 3, 2017
For the 2016-2017 school year, the Appleton Area School District (AASD) is providing a free Late Start Before School Program in partnership with the Boys & Girls Club of the Fox Valley and the YMCA of the Fox Cities. The Late Start Before School Program is offered every second Wednesday of the month from 8:00-10:10 AM.
Students who are participating in the before school program MUST be registered and arrive at school between 8:00-8:30 AM. This is to ensure adequate staffing, program quality, and student safety.
If you wish to have your child/children participate in the Late Start Before School Program during the second semester, please fill out the bottom portion of this sheet and return it to the school office by Friday, February 3. If your plans change during the semester and you need to:
register for additional days, please fill out another form in the school office.
cancel your registration, please contact (Caroline- B & G Club/YMCA Coordinator) at (920-209-0174). Due to staffing limitations, parents of students who are registered but do not show up for the Late Start Before School Program will not receive a courtesy call.

Does Good Attendance Matter?
As school nurses, we are asked to assess and monitor the health of our students. We are frequently asked to check school attendance patterns. This can be an eye-opening experience.
For instance, if a student misses 10 days per year for the lifetime of their school career, that adds up to 130 days… almost a full school year. Research and experience teach us those students with poor attendance are at greater risk for school difficulty. This is especially true as students enter middle and high school. Making up missed schoolwork is very helpful, but missed classroom instruction cannot be made up.
We try to impress upon students that there is a difference between “not feeling well” and being truly sick. We all know there are times when we do not feel 100%, but still try to make it through the day. Students understand that parents do this in order to keep their jobs. This is a real “life skill” that employers look for when hiring. They want employees they can count on to come to work. For students, school is their job.
Common sense can guide parents in deciding when a child is sick enough to be at home. If you are uncertain about sending your child to school, please call us. Sometimes a second opinion can be of help!
Not only is school attendance a legal requirement, it encourages behavior that will help your child be successful in life. So while the days of “perfect attendance” may be old fashioned, great school attendance will never go out of style!

At Home Exercise Rules
1. Record the number of minutes of exercise you do outside of the school day that makes your heart beat fast and that gets you hot and sweaty.
2. For every 15 minutes of exercise outside of school, Mrs. R. will give 1 punch on a student’s walk/run punch card
at school.
3. Please send all completed logs to Mrs. Rushkofske
4. Each punch card has 17 punches on it which equals 5 Miles.
5. For every 26.2 Miles a student does, Mrs. R will give them a medal.
6. When a student reaches a 100-mile marker, they will receive a medal and can pick a prize.
7. Any student who reaches 200 miles will receive a Golden Shoe Trophy at the end of the school year.

Mrs. Kaphingst [email protected] What’s going on in Physical Education? In honor of National Heart Month, Huntley students will have a chance to participate in a variety of heart healthy events.
1. Huntley will be having a Jump Rope for Heart event during the week of February 13th-16th. Students will be doing a variety of jump rope skills during physical education classes. Students participating in the JRFH fundraiser, should return all envelopes by February 16th to Mrs. Rushkofske.
2. Our FUTP60 team will be hosting a Jump Rope Jam Recess on February 15th during lunch recess. Students will get a chance to jump rope while listening to some fun music.
3. All students will get to participate in a FUTP60 Mooovin’ and Smoothin’ event in their classroom. Students will do a vigorous brain break in their classroom followed by a lesson on how to make a nutritious smoothie for a taste test. A big thank you to FUTP60 who chose our school to receive a Ninja blender to promote healthy eating.
During February, students in grades 3-6 will also be working on basketball skills. Students will learn how to dribble, pass, and shoot a basketball to work on hand-eye coordination. They will play a variety of lead-up games to work on their invasion skills. Students in grades K-2 will also be working on hand-eye coordination skills through bouncing, catching, and dribbling activities.
Notes and Reminders: Gym Shoes Needed We are in need of gently used tennis shoes in sizes 11-4. Our extra supply of shoes for those in need has become very small. If you have a pair that you would like to donate, please have your child drop them off to Mrs. R. in the gym. Thank you!
Medical Excuses If your child needs to be out of Physical Education class for more than 2 days for any medical reason, please send a doctor’s note. If your child is going to be out for a long length of time-- for let’s say a broken leg-- please ask the doctor what your child can do. (Ex. Dribble a ball from a chair, etc.) It’s hard for kids to sit and watch their peers having fun working on their skills. Most of our activities can be adapted so they are able to safely participate in class.

Competitive and recreational 5K will start at OSI and finish at Appleton North. This flat and fast 3.1 mile chip times course is perfect for all ages.
Strollers and wagons are welcome! However, for the safety of all participants, we encourage you to begin towards the back of the starting area.
Lamers will be providing shuttle services between OSI & Appleton North. Participants are encouraged to park at Appleton North and be shuttled to OSI to decrease parking congestion.
