At Huntington Ingalls Industries, we take great pride in our “Hard Stuff Done Right” commitment to our business—whether it’s building the greatest military ships at our Ingalls Shipbuilding and Newport News Shipbuilding divisions or providing fleet services, engineering and other kinds of support to our Navy, Coast Guard, Department of Energy and commercial customers. We are also very proud that this commitment extends beyond the gates of the shipyards and beyond the walls of all of our facilities into the communities where we live and work.

HII and its legacy shipbuilding divisions in Virginia and Mississippi have a more than century-old tradition of supporting community organizations such as the United Way, the American Red Cross, Habitat for Humanity, Special Olympics, the USO and local food banks. In 2013, our employees also offered generous financial support for the Washington Navy Yard Survivors Fund and the victims of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines. As a company, we are also highly engaged in efforts that improve the quality of life in our communities, and we are particularly supportive of education, including pre-K and programs that promote science, technology, engineering and math. As individuals, the men and women of HII enthusiastically support hundreds, if not thousands, of organizations, causes and activities nationwide.

Every year, in recognition of National Volunteer Week (April 6-12), we publish a “Report to the Community” to highlight not only what HII contributes as a corporate citizen, but, more importantly, to feature our employees who, on their own time, with their own money and using their unique skills, talent and generosity, make our communities better. Investment in education is a vital element of Huntington Ingalls

Industries’ corporate citizenship. Whether it’s funding STEM

efforts in our schools or our employees volunteering as tutors,

we are committed to developing a strong workforce and, more

importantly, communities of engaged citizens. In 2013, we were

proud to have opened new Apprentice School facilities at our two

shipbuilding divisions with the support of private, local and state

partnerships. We also continued our focus on pre-K education,

supporting the Downtown Hampton Child Development

Center in Virginia and the Excel by 5 program in Mississippi.

Employees at Huntington Ingalls Industries pride themselves

on supporting the U.S. Navy, U.S. Marine Corps and

U.S. Coast Guard by building the ships that carry them

into harm’s way. And we support our service men and

women—past and present—in many other ways. In 2013,

we were a four-star-level sponsor of the annual USO Gala

in Washington, D.C. Our Ingalls Shipbuilding division was

a major sponsor of the Mississippi Gulf Coast Honor

Flight, which enables World War II veterans to travel to

Washington, D.C., to visit the World War II Monument, and

at Newport News Shipbuilding, Information Technology

employees signed more than 300 letters to active military

serving overseas during a “Holiday Mail for Heroes” event.

Huntington Ingalls Industries is proud to participate in the

United Way’s annual campaign, which raises funds that

support dozens of service providers in the communities where

we operate. We also actively support Habitat for Humanity

and Special Olympics, and in 2013, our employees donated

generously to the Washington Navy Yard Survivors Fund and

to the American Red Cross to support the victims of Typhoon

Haiyan. Of course, employees also take it upon themselves to

participate in various cycling events, golf outings and the like—

anything that supports those in need—including our shipbuilding

At work, Huntington Ingalls Industries employees are

committed to meeting and exceeding industry environmental

management standards; outside work, they go above and

beyond in their efforts to preserve the environment. In 2013,

Newport News employees collected more than 15,000

pounds of household hazardous waste. Ingalls employees

matched that effort, collecting more than 15,000 pounds of

trash in the Mississippi Coastal Cleanup. The biggest event

of the year took place in California, where employees at

Newport News’ Continental Maritime of San Diego subsidiary

helped clear more than 45,000 pounds of trash and debris

from the San Diego Bay during Operation Clean Sweep.

While Huntington Ingalls Industries’ employees are actively

engaged in their communities year round, the holidays provide

opportunities to make the season even brighter. In November,

Newport News employees donated more than 20 metric tons

of non-perishable food to the Virginia Peninsula Foodbank; in

December, Ingalls employees provided gifts for 145 children as

part of the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree program. Employees

at HII’s corporate headquarters also filled 88 stockings for

families served by the City of Newport News’ Department of

Human Services, and corporate employees in Washington,

D.C., collected food and cash donations for the Capital

Area Food Bank and Community of Hope organization.
