Dear Parents, Caregivers and Friends of the School

The school year has started well with seven classrooms up and running. A successful family BBQ evening was held in mid February, junior and senior swimming sports have been held and all classroms are humming along nicely. Due to roll increase we started a seventh classroom at the start of the year, enticing Mrs Gaylene Fitz-Herbert back to take this class for the first term. We also welcome new teacher aide Mrs Rosie McIntyre (herself a qualified teacher) to increase our level of in class support for students. At the time of going to print we are looking forward to our annual Harvest

Festival activities, all set for tomorrow – pumpkin, sunflower and scarecrow competitions amongst a whole raft of free, fun activities and competitions planned during the afternoon. Head Girl and Boy 2017: Haana Kilmister and Ben Black as seen on the cover of our 2017 Information Booklet

Hunterville School BBQ

15th February 2017 was the Hunterville School family barbeque. At five o’clock families started arriving at school. Then the children would go and show their parents which room they’re in and some of the work they have done so far this year.

Once the children have shown their mums and dads their rooms everyone goes outside and waits for the bell. “Ding, Ding, Ding, Ding”. “Can everyone please come and sit in the lunch area” said Mr Lewis.

When everyone was sitting down in the lunch area Mr Lewis made a speech about everyone being there. Then Mr Kilmister the chairperson of the board also made a speech too.

Then at 6:15 Mr lewis bought out a red bucket with everybody’s name in it. Then Mr Lewis asked Mr Kilmister if he could do the draw for the ipad mini. The first name was Nate Arnott, but he wasn’t there so he put that name aside and then Mr Kilmister pulled out another name “Connor Hurley” he says, but Connor wasn’t there either.

Then he pulled out the last name “Trystan McKay!” He was there so then Trystan went up and recieved the ipad mini. After that everyone gave Trystan a huge round of applause.

Afterwards the parents and teachers were talking and the children were playing games. Then at about 7:00 o’clock everyone started leaving. It was a great night for everyone at the barbeque. By Alec Murray (Yr 7)

Haana and Ben - 2017 Head Students … An interview with Zoe Nydegger-Monks

How did you feel when you were announced head girl and boy?

We were very surprised and weren’t expecting to be Head Girl/Boy.

What were you most worried about when you started back this term?

Definitely messing up assembly, we both don’t want to forget the words in the middle of an assembly.

How did your first assembly go?

Pretty good but it was quite challenging welcoming eighteen new students though!

What are the good things about being school leaders?

Going to the Young Leaders’ Conference in Rotorua soon and all the privileges.

What are you looking forward to this year?

Definitely the Young Leaders Conference and doing the Tongariro Crossing at camp.

What are your sports and out of school activities at the moment?

Mainly swimming but we both want to play hockey later on in the year. I (Haana) will probably play netball as well.

What are some of the good things about Hunterville School?

All the great opportunities and the students are all friendly and get along well.

How do you think we could improve Hunterville School?

Possibly by starting Mediators sooner in the year rather than towards the end of the year. Ben also says we could start getting the trampolines built this year.

Hurricanes!!!! I was lucky enough to be part of the group that got to watch the Hurricanes train for their game the following Friday night.

After the year 7 and 8’s went to tech, we were travelling to Whanganui in the mini bus with Mr Smith. When we arrived at Cook’s Gardens, we were

only waiting for about 5 minutes until all the members of the Hurricanes team walked past us. We saw lots of All Blacks train in this Hurricane team. They practiced for about 1 hour.

Then it came to the reason we all came to this event, to get photos and autographs! I got photos with lots of the All Blacks but I didn't get a picture with the Barrett boys, Beauden and Jordan !I was gutted! Still, Dane Coles will do!

Overall my day was interesting. I can't wait to see the Hurricanes play or practice again!

Bus Monitor Training 2017

Last Wednesday afternoon, all 20 bus monitors from Room Seven and Eight went to the hall after lunch to have a meeting with policemen, Mr Wright. When all of us were finally sitting patiently in the hall, Mr Wright then went over some basic safety rules about being on the bus. For example if the other kids on the bus are screaming or being noisy tell them to be quiet, and if there are no more seats the bus then the bus monitors should stand instead of having kids sit in groups of three. About 10 minutes later Mr Wright put on a video for us to watch about being a good Bus Monitor. After the video was finished we went outside to take a look at the Poukiorie bus. Mr Wright told us all to get on the bus and once we were on he proceeded to show us where all the emergency exits where, and how to use the emergency exit door and told us how to break the windows properly. After about ten minutes of sitting in the bus we slowly walked back into the hall to wrap things up and go over what we just learnt. Overall we think that Bus Monitor Training is a great idea, because it is a good chance to learn how to be sensible Bus Monitor’s and where and how to use the emergency exits. Thanks Mr Wright! Senior Swimming Sports 2017 (Yr 4-8)

The senior swimming sports for 2017 were held on Thursday last week. We began by arranging all of the kids into their whanau groups and putting them into their areas on the grandstand. The air was cold and the sun appeared to disappear as soon as the event began! After all the students had arrived we kicked off with the whanau chants where each group had a practised chant that they yelled out.

First off were the width events for the year four to six students. They seemed to go really quickly and were over in a flash. After each event, every child in that event was given a block with a number from 1-6 written on it. The number that they were given is the number of whanau points that they get for their whanau group. The whanau relay was the last of the width events with Rata taking it out.

Once all the width events were over, the championship swimmers put up the lanes, ready for the length events. It was beginning to get colder now and jumping getting in and out of the water didn't help. We began the length events with the junior championship girls doing two lengths of freestyle and finished with the whanau relay which Rimu won.

Even though it was cold, it was heaps of fun especially for all the students in Rata as they were the overall winning team! By Emma Hurley (Yr 8)

COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER TEAM 2017 The 2017 com news team has been chosen. The members are Daisy Lane (Student Editor), Nikita Graham, Ben Black, Jordan Hughes, Zoe Nydegger-Monks, Hannah Trow, and Eden Goodwin( School photographer).

Mrs Dalley got all of the Room Eight students to write an article to go into this month's Com News. She then chose the students who would most suit a position in the team based on the articles. We needed to have creative ideas, common sense and to be able to get on with the job.

We hope to do a really good job as this year's Com News team. We’re very honoured to have been chosen and will try our best for you to enjoy reading the Community Newsletter!

Year Seven and Eight Technology

Every Wednesday at 12:30pm, all year 7 and 8 students are lucky enough to be given the opportunity to take the bus to Rangitikei College in Marton to go to technology. The college has given students the chance to do a range of activities, including cooking, woodwork, and sewing.

The cooking teacher is Mrs Turner, and this term she has chosen the theme egg-cellent eggs. Students have been making things that have eggs in them such as French toast and eggs in bed. Just last week the students made ‘desingner’ scones. Yum!!

For woodwork the teacher is Mr Whitu, and at the moment students are making gum ball machines. They are making these machines out of wood and jars. They will then be filled with lollies once they are finished.

The sewing teacher is Mrs Whitfield, and the students had the choice to make drawstring bags or pencil cases. They are making the bags and pencil cases out of different coloured fabrics of their choice.

The 7 and 8 students think that technology is awesome and that it is a great opportunity to learn new skills. We can't wait till next week!!

Lucy McIntyre - Wellington Regional Swimming Championships

Beep! And they're off - the eleven year old girls making a strong start, battling for the 2017 Wellington Regionals’ swimming title.

On the 17th of February Lucy McIntyre headed down to compete at the prestigious Wellington Regionals’ swimming championship! People from Wellington, Wanganui and the Manawatu travelled to this exciting event to try and snatch a placing winning either a bronze, silver or gold medal. Also if you got in the top ten you received a certificate.

Lucy was entered in eight events, and even though she was disqualified from two, she was amazingly able to get a certificate in every single other one!

Here are her placings

• 50 metre freestyle - 6th • 100metre backstroke - 6th • 50 metre backstroke - 6th • 100 metre freestyle - 9th • 50 metre butterfly - 9th • 50 metre breastroke -10th

Lucy says, “I tried my very best, and I hope to move up the ranks even more next year!”

The next big challenge for Lucy is the Aims Games, which is the national competition for intermediate students. She is looking forward to swimming against lots of different kids from all over the country. It is held on September 10-11 up in Tauranga. Luckily Lucy doesn’t turn twelve until 13 September so she will be in the eleven year age group!

Parklee Bullride Last Friday night at around six o'clock my Mum, my brother and I arrived at the Parklee Bull Ride just outside of Hunterville. When we had finally parked and got out of the car we realised that the bull ride was already under way.

We speedily walked down a little slope and then we decided to walk up a little hill so that we could get a good view of the bull ride. After finally finding a good spot, we sat down in the hot afternoon sun and watched the bull riding.

For the first round the annoying sun was shining right into my eyes so I grabbed the piece of paper that the people at the gate had given us and used it to shade my eyes. In the second round this about 20 year old guy was riding a bull and after a few seconds he got bucked off. I think he was still holding on when he fell to the ground near the rails. The bull then came bucking along, pinned him up against the rails and injured his leg, so the paramedics came into the ring and helped him hop away.

Some of the people riding weren't that good but most of them were alright and lasted over 8 seconds on the bulls. Overall, it was an interesting night and fun to watch as I hadn't been to a bull ride since I was much younger.

Hunterville Cricket 2017 Last Saturday our year seven and eight team played cricket against Huntley. We won the toss and elected to bat first, Cam and Josh opened the batting. After a while Cam and Josh retired and Matt and Liam H went in to take their place. We ended on 100 for 2 after 24 overs. Now it was our turn to field. Our opening bowlers were Matt and Liam Bremner and they got us off to a great start. In the end we bowled the opposition all out for 70 runs.

We have 3 hard ball teams: a year 7-8 team and 2 year 5-6 teams and we have 2 Friday night cricket teams; a year 3-4 and year 5-6 team. The hard ball teams play at 9am on Saturdays, either in Hunterville, Marton or in Wanganui. The Friday night teams travel to Wanganui by cars or in the school van, and they play various teams there from 5.30 to 6.30pm.

We are very lucky to have great coaches who put their time and huge effort into our teams, including Mr Lewis, Mr Keenan, Mr Livingston and Mr Weston.

We also have a programme of Introduction to Cricket, for year one to four kids to get started playing. Mr Lewis organises it, and sometimes Mrs McIntyre coaches them too. Some of us year seven and eight hardball players help set up the gear and coach these kids every Wednesday at lunch time. Hopefully in a year or two some of these beginners will start playing hardball.

Hunterville School Family Barbecue On the 15th of February 2017, Hunterville School hosted their annual family barbeque, with many families in attendance. From my point of view, the barbecue was a great idea, a way to get children to drag their parents along to a school gathering to meet other parents, or in the hope they will win a iPad Mini (probably the second one!). Even though the chances were minuscule, no one lost hope!

The iPad mini was a prestigious prize. The one that wins it feels like a god while everyone else fills with disappointment. Mr Lewis came up and announced that it was time for the iPad draw! The deal for the iPad draw was that if your name was drawn you had to be a) in attendance at the barbecue, and b) a parent or guardian had to be in attendance too. Mr Lewis called up Mr Kilmister to draw the names out of the box. Finally, Mr Kilmister drew out an entry, looked at it and yelled, “Trystan McKay!” Luckily for Trystan he was there and so were his parents!

After the ipad was won, everyone lined up for their free sausage sizzle. Some people even lined up several times, and there were plenty sausages to go round. After the feast all of the kids got to play on the playground or with sports gear on the school field while the adults talked, and talked and talked! In conclusion if you didn't come you missed out!

Air Tattoo

On the weekend of 25-26 February, the NZ Air Force celebrated their 80th anniversary with a giant air show at Ohakea. Because of the huge amount of traffic around air shows, all the Bulls and Feilding people parked up and caught buses to Ohakea. The planes flying were the Spitfire, Devon, two jets, Harvards and Texans (black falcons). The jets just about went the speed of sound. The F16 jet was the loudest plane out of them all. At twelve thirty after midday it was half an hour no flying time so you could eat lunch and buy things from the stalls. Then you were allowed to go inside planes or helicopters or ejection seats. There were an estimated of 13,000 people in total attending the air show on the Saturday. As well as the military planes, there were huge passenger planes like Air New Zealand Boeing 787 and the Japanese KC-767. Then a cargo plane flew and dropped parachutists holding flags. Then it flew back over and shot flares out the back. At the end the Black Falcons flew in some amazing Texans who did barrell rolls, loops and hearts made of smoke. I really enjoyed the tattoo, especially the Black Falcons display. It was really loud and really exciting. By Euan Gower (Yr 7)

The Air Tattoo The Air Tattoo was finally here. As more and more people arrived at the polo ground in Bulls, more and more people left to travel to Ohakea in the convoy of buses. There were 13,000 people at Ohakea on Saturday which is tiny compared to how many people there were in 2012. Fighter Jets, Black Falcons, Harvard's, one Spitfire, Hornets, Hercules and Orion aircraft were just some of the aircraft soaring through the sky at Ohakea for their 80th anniversary. The fighter jets were so fast that they broke the sound barrier, even when they were going slow. When the seven Black Falcons were soaring through the sky they made trails of smoke behind them and because there was no wind the patterns stayed in the sky for a long time. There was a treasure hunt for kids as well. It was pretty annoying because it meant that you couldn't watch the planes fly around. Instead, if you had little brothers or sisters, you had to walk around the whole section trying to find where all the stamps were. There were so many foods stalls; there were coffee carts, hot chips and candy floss and that is only some of the ones we sampled. The traffic was really good and this time there weren't traffic jams from Ohakea to Palmerston North or Whanganui to Ohakea but there were police cars everywhere. Lots of roads were closed off and detours directed traffic away from SH1 around Ohakea. It was actually a really fun, exciting, very loud day, and I really enjoyed the fighter jets especially. Senior Swimming Sports 2017

The senior swimming sports had finally rolled around on that Thursday evening. As everyone arrived at the pools, things were still being set up. People had already taken their seats for the sports. Children sat packed in the grandstand. Then it started. Mr Smith blew the whistle and everyboby fell silent.

First was the whanau chants. Rimu was first to say their chant, then Kauri, next was Totara and last but not least was Rata. There were no winners announced of the chants. Afterwards, I thought that everybody’s ears must have been sore.

First up was the width events. On your marks, get set, BANG! And the first lot of children were off and swimming. At the end of each race Mrs Lewis, Mrs Spencer and Miss Grey gave each child a block with a number on it. If you got a block with a 6 on it it means you got 6 points for your whanau and won your heat, and so on. The width events went on for a quite a while, finishing with the width medleys and the junior relays.

After the width events the lanes were put up. In the lane events there were up to 6 swimmers in each event, going for the title out of their year group. The year groups were, years 4-5 girls, years 4-5 boys, years 6-8 girls, years 6-8 boys. Also for the children that were not in championship they had 1 length of each stroke to do and the medley. The medleys were not full medleys because they had no butterfly.

The first race of the length events had started. It was for the people who weren’t in championship. Then the championship events began. The events for the year 4-5 chamiponship children were 50m freestyle, 25m freestyle, 25m breastsroke, 25m backstroke, 75m medley. The year 6-8 children’s events were 5om freestyle, 100m freestyle, 50m breaststroke, 50m backstroke, 75m medley, 25m butterfly.

When all the length races and the fun was all done it was getting dark and nearly time to go home but there was one more thing, the RELAYS! First only the whanau relays raced; 1st was Rimu, 2nd Kauri, 3rd Rata, 4th Totara. Then Rimu stayed to race the adults and Mr Smith made another team out of the other whanau relay teams. There were 2 adult teams. 1st was the made up team, 2nd was Rimu and then were the adult teams. Overall for the championships: Yr 4-5 girls 1st= Tegan Murray and Savannah McDougall. In the boys’ section: 1st Evan McIntyre. Yr 6-8 girls 1st Lucy McIntyre and Yr 6-8 boys’ winner was Alex Legner. At the end of the day I think everyboby tried their hardest and there were also some great swims in the non-championship events. By Lucy McIntyre

Junior Swimming Sports (Yr 1-3)

On Wednesday last week the Hunterville School Junior swimming sports was held. It was a nice sunny day, so it was great for the year 1-3 kids to swim in the freezing pools in Hunterville! The swimming sports does not have a championship winner - it is just a demonstration to show the progress that they have made since school started.

First up was the year ones showing off their kicking and splashing skills. They also did other activities such as horsey rides, putting their faces under the water and blowing bubbles. The year twos did a similar demonstration as well. Other activities such as diving through hoops, making whirlpools and even swimming whole widths or lengths were achieved by the Junior school. I was really impressed by their progress and I'm sure that their parents were too.

The Junior swimming sports was a great success with an amazing turnout, and surprisingly a lot of the parents were brave enough to hop in the pool for the piggy-back race, which was really exciting - especially for those nearer the deep end! It was great entertainment and we were very fortunate it was a hot day.

Commemorative Crosses Project With RSA In the afternoon on Tuesday the 7th of March Mrs Smailes drove Danielle Ansley, Connor Hurley, Hayden Robb and I (Nikita Graham) up Rangatira Road to Mr David Cole’s house. We went there to make crosses for ANZAC Day and in memory of the local soldiers who lost their lives at war. They will be set out in the grass area in front of the cenotaph opposite Hunters Café.

When we first arrived at Mr Cole's house we were greeted by him and after a few minutes of talking we all walked over to his workshop. We were also joined by Mrs Thompson who was there to help us as well.

There were four different jobs to do including sanding down the sharp edges on the pieces of wood, drilling holes in the end of the long bits of wood and banging in nails, screwing together the two bits of wood to make a cross and painting all the crosses with white paint.

Hayden and I did sanding down of the sharp edges first while Danielle was screwing the crosses together and Connor was drilling holes in the end and hammering in nails. About 10 minutes later we all swapped jobs and continued for about an hour.

Just before we left Mr Cole said the Danielle and I were allowed to go and pick blueberries off his bush! They were delicious. Overall helping Mr Cole with the crosses was fun but, just as good was picking and eating the blueberries.

Another group of us will return next Tuesday to continue the work.

Home and School Report This is the first report for me as the new President for Home and School. We farewelled Rachel Williams and Jo Lambert from the committee at the end of 2016, as their youngest children left Hunterville School. We recently held our first meeting for the year and things are already happening! On March 17th we are holding our second annual "Ladies Night". Everyone really enjoyed this last year, and alongside a lot of new families to the school community and the fun we had in 2016, we thought it would be a great idea for Mums and caregivers, and female staff to get together and meet each other in an informal way. We anticipate a fun evening! Our first big fundraiser is happening on Sunday, April 23rd. This is the day of the Wanganui Kids Hunt, and we're really excited and pleased to have been offered the opportunity to be The Only food providers on the day. This has huge potential for H&S to earn some great $$$ for our kids. Please keep an eye out in our school Pinky seeking help on the day. We will definitely be needing some support from our school community for this. We are holding our AGM on Tuesday 21st March, at school from 7.30pm. Please note all main positions are filled and all are welcome! Tris Weston H&S Pres.
