Hunterdon Youth Orchestra Camp takes place for one week in July, and is open to advanced students of orchestral instruments (excluding piano) in grades 7–12. The repertoire chosen for the week is not simplified, but is the same as that played by professional symphonies. It is learned and performed in a five-day period, ensuring a fast- paced and intense working environment. July 10 – 14, 2017 at Hunterdon Central High School Saturday Strings meets on Saturday mornings September through May at the Flemington Baptist Church, offering string instruction and string ensembles at beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels. Players of all ages, 5 to adult, are welcome, working together to experience the great pleasure of creating music as a group. Involvement in the program enhances performance in school orchestras, and prepares students to participate in more advanced groups, such as the New Jersey Region orchestras and/or the Hunterdon Symphony. SATURDAY STRINGS STAFFNancy Roth, Director, Violin Instructor, and Chamber Music Coach, is a graduate of Oberlin Conservatory with a Bachelor of Music Degree in Violin Performance and Music Education, with study at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria.

Concertmaster of the Hunterdon Symphony, Nancy has appeared as soloist with the Central Jersey Symphony and other area groups. She is the founder of Hunterdon Musical Arts, and serves as Volunteer Director.

Patty Gonsky, Intermediate and Advanced String Orchestra Conductor, received her Bachelor of Music from Lamar University, North Texas State University.

Patty is a freelance cellist in NJ, PA, and NY, has recorded with Jon Bon Jovi, performed with Ray Charles and BB King, and is a member of Hunterdon Symphony. She has been string teacher in Piscataway schools for many years, and has conducted NJ All-Region Orchestras, as well as the All-State Intermediate Orchestra.

Kira Horiuchi, Violin and Viola Instructor, and Fiddling Coach, started her violin education as beginning violin student in the HMA Music for Youth program, and is a member of Hunterdon Symphony.

Kira is a member of the Suzuki Association of the Americas, and has completed instruction to teach Suzuki Violin Books 1 and 2.

Richard Hotchkiss, Cello Instructor, received his Bachelor of Music in Jazz Violincello from Philadelphia College of Performing Arts, with graduate studies at the University of the Arts School of Music, where he is currently a Senior Lecturer of Cello.

Richard has performed with Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg, Pavarotti, Natalie Cole, Jimmy Page/Robert Plant, Joni Mitchell, and many other artists. He is a member of Hunterdon Symphony.

Arturo Baguer, Bass Instructor, studied double bass and bass guitar with Steve Marks (Bass Collective NYC), Tony Comoros (SUNY Purchase), and Harvie S. (Manhattan School of Music).

Art is a professional bassist who has worked and taught in the tri-state area for many years. He recorded and toured Europe, USA, and Canada with RCA Recording Artist Jordan Chassan and Grammy Winner Pinetop Perkins, to name a few. He is a member of Hunterdon Symphony.

ENSEMBLE PROGRAM*

Intermediate String Orchestra Meets at 9:00 am for one hour

Advanced String Orchestra Meets at 10:00 am for one hour

Chamber Music Open to students who play in Advanced Orchestra; meets at 11:00 for one hour

Fiddling Meets at 11:00 for one hour.

*Participation determined by assessment

HUNTERDON YOUTH ORCHESTRA CAMP takes place July 10 – 14, 2017, from 9 to 12 each morning, with an evening performance on Friday, July 14, and is open to advanced students of orchestral instruments (excluding piano) in grades 7 – 12.

The camp is an excellent opportunity for students to work in small groups with coaching by professionals, as well as together in a full orchestra.

The repertoire chosen for the week is not simplified, but is the same as that played by professional symphonies.

The music is learned and performed in a five-day period, producing a fast-paced and intensive working environment.

Lawrence Kursar, Hunterdon Symphony conductor, works with the full orchestra to give student musicians an authentic orchestral experience.

Lawrence Kursar, Conductor, holds degrees in conducting, French horn performance, and music education. His Bachelor of Arts degree was earned at Trenton State College and his two Masters degrees at New England Conservatory.

An accomplished horn player, Larry tours extensively with Crosswinds Trio. He is currently a teacher of instrumental music at the Woodglen School in Lebanon Township, and is in his 26th year as conductor of Hunterdon Symphony.
