HackHunterdon is just around the corner! FLEMINGTON – Hunterdon County’sannual hackathon, HackHunterdon, isjust around the corner, and the event’ssponsoring entities are casting a widenet to attract technologists from all overthe Northeast to participate. This year’s event will be held on June9th & 10th at Hunterdon Central HighSchool in Flemington, NJ. HackHunterdon is a 24-hourtech-product-creation competition forinnovators – organized by HunterdonCounty Economic Development,Flemington Community Partnership, and the Hunterdon County Chamber ofCommerce. A main goal of theorganizers, as well as the participatingbusinesses, is to identify local talentwith exceptional ideas so that theirinnovations can flourish. “Last year’s hackathon broughttogether a diverse amount of areatalent with some exceptional ideas,”said Sam Napolitano, Sr. VP ofEngineering at Viacom, who alsoserves as a judge and team mentor forthis year’s hackathon. “TheHackHunterdon effort is designed tohelp provide them with the partnershipthey need to flourish in Hunterdon andthe surrounding area.” Last year’s hackathon saw dozens oftechnologists compete for about$10,000 worth of cash and prizes. Thetop team this year will share a $5,000grand prize for their efforts.Additionally, due to the number ofbusinesses involved in the effort, there’s potential career opportunity forparticipants. “We hired a technologist directly out ofthe 2017 hackathon. We havesubsequently started a new partnershipwith the technologist as a partner, focused on developing accounting andinsurance applications” stated MichaelCastle, a partner in Bond Andiola &Company, a Flemington-basedaccounting firm. “Participants in the2018 event likewise have the chance atsome real career and partnershipopportunities due to the number ofcompanies supporting the hackathon”. Personnel from a wide range of localand international technologycompanies are a part of theHackHunterdon effort. Judging the teams’ projects this yearwill be Napolitano, Eric Herbel ofIntegrated Clinical Systems, aHunterdon County-based IT company, and John Goodwin, an engineeringmanager at Facebook. In addition to the prizes and therecruitment opportunities, organizershope participants will form relationshipswith each other that lead to futureprojects with market potential.

Hunterdon County has been activelyseeking to partner with its techcommunity and continues to exploreand develop additional ideas to support thecommunity, such as a businessincubator, the Chamber’s emergingentrepreneurial center, and more. “Bottom-line is that the event providesa platform for talented individuals tocome together and explore realopportunities – and to have a lot of fundoing it” said Goodwin. “Teams fromlast year’s event are still developingtogether, so participating in thehackathon can truly be the start ofsomething big.” Those interested can get moreinformation plus apply to participate inthe 2018 HackHunterdon Hackathon atHackHunterdon.com or by contactingMarc Saluk [email protected] or at908399-1108. 2017 HackHunterdon Hackathon The first Hackathon, held atFlemington’s Feed Mill on April 28 and29, 2017, was considered a resoundingsuccess. Dozens of technologistsparticipated, new concepts weredeveloped, and lasting relationships—amajor goal of the initiative—wereformed. One such outgrowth was amonthly meetup, held on the lastThursday of each month at Lone EagleBrewing in Flemington, wheretechnologists gather to exchange ideasand learn about new developments inthe field. What is a hackathon? When Life Events Affect Your BenefitsGetting married or divorced, havingor adopting a baby and retiring aresignificant milestones in life. These“qualified life events,” as they arecommonly referred to in theinsurance industry, may permit youto make adjustments to the benefitsyou receive through your employeror other provider. If you’veexperienced a life event this year, review your benefits and determineif you need to make new or differentelections to ensure the desiredcoverage for you and your family.Keep the following items in mind asyou complete your review:

Act promptly. Be aware of deadlinesto make your new benefitselections. Generally speaking, providers offer special enrollmentfor a limited timeframe during whichyou can update your new status ormake changes in your covereddependents. If you miss thewindow, you may face a waitingperiod. In some cases, a misseddeadline means you’re out of luckuntil the next open enrollmentperiod or the first of the year, whichever applies to your situation.

Change health insurance coverage.Do you have enough insurance?Too much? If you’re newly married, compare the benefits offered to youand your spouse through yourrespective employers to see whereyou can get the most value. Ahigher deductible plan may makesense if you have two incomes, areboth young and healthy and don’tanticipate significant medicalexpenses. If you add children toyour family, you’ll want to makesure they are included in yourhealth insurance as dependents. Ifyou’re retiring before you areeligible for Medicare, evaluateCOBRA benefits (continuedcoverage under your employer’splan), insurance through astill-employed spouse or youroptions through the healthcaremarketplace.

Evaluate life and disabilityinsurance. Marriage, divorce andthe addition of children are allreasons to evaluate your life anddisability insurance coverage. Ifyour coverage is insufficient, makeit a priority to obtain additionalinsurance. Unfortunately, manypolicyholders forget to remove a

former spouse as a beneficiary totheir policies following divorce andremarriage, which can complicatelegal matters should your health beunexpectedly jeopardized. Whenreviewing your coverage, take timeto verify that your beneficiarydesignations are correct.

Adjust your Health Savings Account(HSA) contributions. If you have ahealth savings account (HSA) andexperienced a family event thisyear, the amount you’re allowed tocontribute annually may havechanged. If you added to yourfamily through marriage or children, you can set aside more money in aHSA. If you experienced a divorce, you can split savings accumulatedin an HSA or assign the benefits toyour former spouse as part of adivorce agreement. Check with yourhealthcare provider to learn howmuch you can contribute based onyour situation.

Consider legal and financial advice. Some life events, such as divorceor adoption, may involve benefitsdecisions that have legalimplications. Consider meeting withan attorney to discuss your situationand get advice on next steps.Additionally, these events maytrigger numerous changes to yourbudget, investments or otherfinancial affairs. Think aboutmeeting with a financial advisorwho can help you evaluate yourbenefits within the broader financialpicture of your life goals andretirement plans.

There are two majortaxpayer-friendly changes for the2017 New Jersey individual incometax return (Form NJ-1040).

The pension and other retirementincome exclusion for taxpayers age62 or older or disabled has beendoubled from 2016 to 2017. Theexclusion, which is still available onlyto taxpayers whose NJ gross incomeis less than $100,000, is now up to$40,000 for joint filers, $20,000 formarried filing separate filers, and$30,000 for all other filers. Thisexclusion will continue to increasegradually over the next three years.

Starting in 2017, New Jerseytaxpayers who are military veteransthat were honorably discharged fromactive duty can claim a $3,000exemption on Form NJ-1040 orNJ-1040-NR. For the first year thatthe veteran claims the exemption, they must submit a U.S. Dept. ofDefense Form DD-214 (Certificate ofRelease or Discharge From ActiveDuty) to the NJ Division of Taxationprior to filing their New Jerseyindividual income tax return. With the constant changes inFederal and New Jersey individualincome tax changes, you may need

professional advice for your individualor business tax situation for 2017 orbeyond. If you have any questions, please contact Andrew Ross, CPA ofBKC, CPAs, PC at [email protected] 908-782-7900, x113. Visit our blogat www.bkc-cpa.com for more taxnews, alerts and articles.

Digital marketing, or webmarketing, and social media have avery low cost to entry but thatdoesn’t mean we should ignoretracking our investment and return. While ROI is not entirely possiblewhen it comes to measuring thesuccess of a relationship andloyalty, it can be applied to theproof of such – gaining more newcustomers and retaining theexisting ones. You need to continue (or enter into)digital marketing and social mediaregardless of what your initialattempts are producing. To throwaway the idea of digital marketingbecause you’re not seeing results,is like tossing out a cookbookbecause you made a recipe in itthat you didn’t like. If you’re notseeing the results you want, change the recipe to suit. The sameholds true for social media anddigital marketing. But you’ll havetrouble adjusting your marketingrecipe if you don’t know what youstarted with.Do This FirstBefore you begin tracking you needto do two things: ⦁ Draw a line in the sand. List all ofyour followers, likes, subscribersetc. as they stand today. Yoursuccess needs a baseline, so writeit all down.⦁ Start tracking your digitalmarketing efforts by day. There area number of software platforms thatcan help you keep track of yourdigital marketing efforts, or you cantrack them in a spreadsheet, or usepen and paper. Use something youcan update quickly and extrapolatethe information you need just asfast. If you don’t, you’ll stop using it.You’ll want to track when (andwhat) you post to your blog andsocial media, any marketing emails, when you send your newsletters, etc. You’ll need this info becauseyou’ll compare your efforts to yourtraffic and inquiries. What Should I Be Tracking on MyWebsite? There are several things you needto start tracking on a weekly basis.A weekly basis is ideal because itallows you to see trends quicklyand readjust as needed. Monthlyallows too much time to elapsebefore you notice the numbers. For the first several weeks after youstart tracking look for true patternsbefore you begin tweaking. Untilyou have historical data you won’t

know a random blip from a need forcourse correction. The data listed below can all beobtained from Google Analytics. Ifyou don’t have analytics set up onyour site, do so today. It’simportant. Really important.Assuming you do, you need totrack:⦁ The number of unique visitors toyour site each week. ⦁Where your website visitors arecoming from (traffic sources). Lookat organic, direct, and referralsources. Organic searchers reachyou after typing in a keywordassociated (hopefully) with yourbusiness. Direct referrals key in thename of your business or yourURL. Referral sources come fromsocial media, outside links on otherblogs and other places that “refer”them to you. If one area is weak, trysome marketing activities to changethat.⦁ The number of blog readers eachweek.⦁ The number of new customerinquiries you receive and wherethey’re coming from.⦁Which customer inquiries becomecustomers. You’re looking forpatterns here. Maybe you noticethat people referred to you fromyour company page on LinkedInare twice as likely to buy from youas people coming from Facebook.⦁ Abandonment rate, if you have ane-commerce site. ⦁ Effectiveness of your

call-to-action. Every page must askyour audience to do something.Whatever you’re asking, needs tobe tracked. There is no way to measure returnon investment without a calculation. You must measure a baseline andnote the changes that are occurringto gain a better understanding ofwhat is working and what needs tobe adjusted. If you continue to plug away at yourmarketing, taking stabs in the dark, your efforts will fall flat because youwon’t recognize opportunities tobuild on successful trends nor willyou notice disinterest with particularposts. Digital marketing is not afinal destination, it’s a journeytowards business success thatneeds to be evaluated periodically. You want to provide your customerswith something they want. Withoutdigital marketing you’ll have no wayto know whether you’reaccomplishing that or not.
