Due to the massive success of maiden tour in 2012, ska legends, the English Beat, are coming back for a repeat skanking session.

Charging onto the scene as ‘the hottest thing since the Pennsylvania meltdown’ in 1979, Birming-ham’s ska kings sustained an equally explosive career, spearheading the British ska movement alongside influential acts like The Specials, Madness, Bad Manners and The Selecter.

The current US-based incarnation boasts a setlist jam packed with fan favourites - Mirror In the Bathroom, Save It For Later, Too Nice to Talk To, Stand Down Margaret, Hands Off She’s Mine and I Confess to name a few.

Pick it up, pick it up.

WHAT'S ON After blowing away all expectations with

his b arnstorming Sharkmouth se t la st year, Ru ssell M orris h as de finitely g one one better with Van Diemen’s Land.

The sec ond i n a p roposed t rilogy, Van Diemen’s L and pic ks u p whe re Shark-mouth, a nd i t’s chr onicling o f A ustralian characters, left of f, but t his t ime a round, with s tories o f th e E ureka S tockade, Breaker Morant and Sandakan, the scope is much bigger.

While a ny a rtist, w hen t ackling s uch subject m atter, r uns t he r isk of d rifting into overly sentimental or mawkish terri-tory, Morris avoids this problem creating a riveting catalogue of Aussie tales.

Musically t his i s ro ots/blues p ar e xcel-lence and with help from the likes of Rick Springfield, C hain’s P hil M anning, S cott Owen from the Living End, and Rob Hirst, it’s almost an essential listening.

Directed by Zack Snyder (The Watchmen, 300) this post-modern adventure is a visual feast.

Baby Doll (Emily Browning) is locked away in an asylum by he r a busive s tepfather whe re she w ill undergo a l obotomy i n f ive days’ t ime. Faced w ith unimaginable o dds, she ret reats t o a f antastical world where she and four other female inmates plot to escape the facility. The lines between reality and fantasy blur as Baby Doll fights for freedom.

This by-the-numbers action flick contains pretty much everything you’d want in a Jason Statham film - machismo, gunplay, explosions and designer stubble. Statham stars as a former DEA agent who has gone through a crisis after his action against a biker gang went horribly wrong and it cost the life of his boss’ son.

He decides to quit the turbulent and demand-ing life of thrill for his daughter’s sake and retires to a small town. As is the case with such things, Statham is soon drawn into a stouch with the local meth kingpin (James Franco).

This film isn’t trying to break any new ground, but it’s a decent enough action flick and James Franco brings a certain gravitas to proceedings.

Let the good times

After the massive success of last year’s APIA Good Times tour - featuring Daryl Braithwaite, Joe Camilleri, James Reyne and Ross

Wilson - it’s coming back to Newcastle, this time featuring another bevy of formidable talent in Joe Camilleri, Russell Morris, Richard Clapton and Leo Sayer.

“Yeah, they’re all a great bunch of fellas and the show should be a hell of a lot of fun,” Russell Morris told TE.

Morris, who is currently enjoying quite the purple patch, thanks to the runaway success of his Australiana blues-roots masterpiece Sharkmouth and now its follow-up Van Diemen’s Land said that punters could expect an even smattering of classic hits and new tunes.

Stephen BiSSet

music

“Obviously a lot of my earlier hits like The Real Thing and Wings of an Eagle will be in there, but I’m also keen to play a few tunes off Sharkmouth and Van Diemen’s Land,” he said.

“We’ll all be doing individual sets and we may just all get up together as well, so it should be pretty exciting.”

One of the country’s most enduring singer songwriters, Morris hit creative paydirt last year with one of 2013’s most surprising releases in Sharkmouth. The barnstorming blues album, full of tales about such colourful Aussie figures as Squizzy Taylor, Phar Lap and Les Darcy, has become Morris’ most successful album to date. Not a bad effort considering that it was released completely independently.

“It was such a lovely feeling to see the album do so well - it’s absolutely fantastic and much more than I expected,” Morris said of Sharkmouth.

“I have absolutely no animosity toward

the labels that turned it down though - I actually have received a few letters since the release from labels apologising for not giving the album the attention it deserved - which is nice.”

Now, with the second album in a proposed trilogy, Van Diemen’s Land, out and doing it’s thing, it seems the purple patch is set to continue for Morris who has produced another thumping blues record that is even bigger in scope, both musi-cally and lyrically to Sharkmouth - cover-ing such topics as the Eureka Stockade and Breaker Morant.

“Without being jingoistic, the reason I decided to tackle Australiana as a topic is that, if you’re going to do a blues and roots album - it should definitely be about your roots,” he said.

Morris, who is perhaps best known for his seminal psych classic The Real Thing has definitely achieved icon status, with the ubiquitous track added to the National Film and Sound Archive last year - although he said he wasn’t sure about the icon tag.

“It’s so great to be recognised in such a way, but I don’t really know about being called an icon,’ he laughed. “An icon is something you put on a wall and look at from time to time and I’m not ready to be put on a wall just yet.”

Catch the APIA Good Times tour at the Civic Theatre on Saturday, May 17.

TE is giving you the chance to win a double pass to see Good Times. To enter, email your name and contact details to [email protected], with ‘Good Times’ in the subject line by no later than 5pm on Tuesday, May 6. Winners will be notified by phone.

Flying solo

T here’s li ttle d enying th at, as a founding m ember a nd s ong-writer for Newcastle’s rockingest
