Thank you for purchasing our KinderLit books!

In this file you will find the photo page, directions, and reproducible blackline masters for the book.

We have also included some general cutting directions, a list of all our KinderLit books, and a purchase order form to use at your school.

Please be aware that some books have letter and legal sized paper for pages which will need to be printed separately. Scroll through the document and you will see which pages, if any, are legal size. Most of our books are only letter size pages.

To print the legal sized paper, select Print on your File button. In the printer window, make sure the properties for the pages are set for legal sized paper. You may need to change the settings.

If a document needs to be printed off with two-sided pages, the directions tell you which pages to put back-to-back. On any step book, remember to turn the

second side upside down!

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact us by email. We usually respond within 24 hours since we work out of our homes. Our email address is

Helpful Hints from KinderLit

Here are several hints and tips from us that you might find useful.

• Although we have given you exact sizes for the paper the children need in the book directions, it is not necessary to cut it exactly! For ease of preparation,

just cut 9” by 12” construction paper into halves, quarters, or squares. • Use a yellow highlighter to number the pages of your original. The yellow will not

appear on the copies and it will help you to keep the pages in correct order, especially those 2-sided step books!

• The yellow highlighter can be used to print the appropriate words on the originals also.

• To save glue and time refilling bottles, consider using the Tap-N-Glue tops on

regular white glue bottles. To reduce the tapping noise, we call them “press and squeeze” bottles! You can check them out at www.tapnglue.com, or call them at 1-800-992-9018. Their address is: Leech Products P.O. Box 2147 Hutchinson, KS

67504. • We use a great machine called Rollataq to glue the covers of the children’s books

onto construction paper. There are hand-held applicators for about $25 or a

motorized desktop model that perhaps your school would purchase. The machine uses special glue and our entire school used only about 3 gallons in a school year. Check it out at www.daige.com

Fold

cut

KinderLit Cutting and Drawing The pages of our books are created using the same collage and drawing techniques. Below are some basic cutting methods:

• Use squares to cut circles by trimming the corners. Children who have difficulty doing this can cut straight corners off and then trim smaller and smaller amounts off each pointed corner.

or

• Use rectangles to cut ovals or “football” shapes (pointed ovals) by trimming the corners, using either one of the above methods.

• Rectangles or squares can be used to cut triangles by folding it and then cutting from one corner diagonally across to the other corner while you “hold the fold.” When opened, the paper creates a large triangle.

• Use squares or rectangles to cut a “mountain” shape. These “mountains” can be used for ears, bodies, boats, umbrellas, etc.

• Details such as facial features, ears, legs, flowers, etc. are made from small pieces of paper or the scraps

left from cutting the main pieces. We recommend having a “scrap box” in your classroom so that the

children can save pieces from any project they make. Then they can go to this box to look for the paper

they need for these details. Also provide a thin line black marker for adding details such as yoyo string or

the whiskers. To make our preparation easier, we do not cut the paper into exact sizes but cut 9” by 12”

construction paper into halves, quarters, and eighths.

• If the directions call for drawing, have your students outline the shapes first with a black crayon before coloring. This gives them a shape to fill in rather than just scribbling the colors in a free form scribble!

After you have shown your children how to make these basic shapes, they can create anything! Animals are oval bodies, circle heads, and rectangle legs. Just change the colors of the paper and the length of the necks and you can make giraffes, cows, or pigs! People are made with circles for heads, rectangles, squares, and triangles for clothes, and mountains for feet!

The Very Hungry Kindergarten Caterpillar

Shape Book Based on The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle

PURPOSE:

Through this book the children learn the days of the week, practice counting sets to 5,

and discover the life cycle of a butterfly.

HOW WE INCORPORATE THIS BOOK INTO OUR CURRICULUM:

This book can be adapted in a variety of ways. We have used it to learn the food groups

and then collaged food for the caterpillar to eat. On the enclosed sample picture page, the

children were studying vegetables and used them in their books.

As a part of our daily lesson, we have the children help us sound out and decide what

letters are needed to write the food word and day of the week as we write them on the

chalkboard. The children will then copy the words into their book prior to doing the collage.

We demonstrate the process in front of the class in our own book as part of our lesson. We do

not expect the children’s work to look exactly like ours. When the book is completed we all sit

with our books and read together. We have the children touch each word as we read. They

really see themselves as readers and say; “I can read!” We send the books home for them to

“read” to their families, friends, and pets.

GENERAL DIRECTIONS:

• Copy a book packet for each child. If you copy machine is capable of doing covers, copy the front and back covers onto green paper.

• Staple book together and cut all the pages at once. We found it easier to put a staple in the corner outside the leaf shape to help hold the pages while we cut.

• All the illustrations are created using the collage technique. Demonstrate for the children how to cut a circle from a square and a triangle from a rectangle. To make our preparation

easier, we do not cut the paper into exact sizes but cut 9” by 12” construction paper into

halves, quarters, and eighths.

MATERIALS: appropriate construction paper for each page

PAGE 1: “Sunday”

Using a green rectangle the children will cut a caterpillar body that looks like a long skinny

cloud. Add a red head, purple antenna, and a collaged face. Don’t forget his tiny feet.

PAGE 2- 5: “ Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, the food words, and numbers”

Decide what types of food the children will use in their books and have them brainstorm the

choices. On each day, have the class select a food and sound out the letters as you write it on

the board. They copy the word into their books along with the day of the week. Then the

children collage the food.

Page 8: Hungry Caterpillar Shape Book

PAGE 6: “Saturday and junk food words”

Repeat the above process using junk food.

PAGE 7:

The children will collage a BIG FAT caterpillar.

PAGE 8: “cocoon”

Collage a cocoon from brown paper.

PAGE 9: “butterfly”

The children will collage a symmetrical butterfly.

COVER:

The children can decide what to collage on the cover. Suggestions: caterpillar, butterfly, food.

We hope you and your children enjoy this piece of literature! Please visit our web site at
