Winter may be cold, but it is never too late to start taking the small steps to im-prove our diet and lifestyle. Here are some effective ways to start making the steps to a

healthier you today:

Avoid foods and beverages high in “added sugars.”

When ordering foods such as pizza aim for veggie toppings like mushrooms, cap-sicums and onions, rather than meats.

Choose tomato based pasta sauces rather than any with cream.

Bike riding, walking, gardening, briskly pushing a pram, and climbing stairs are all good examples of being active. Remember: your physical activity should add up to at least 30 minutes a day!

Try including a side salad or steamed vegies in your lunches and dinners to help you to feel fuller. Remember: go light on salad dressings and sauces!

Keep stocked up on frozen vegetables for quick and easy cooking in the micro-wave.

For dessert, make puddings and custards with fat-free or low-fat milk.

Whether it is at University or work, park your vehicle farther from your destina-tion and walk the rest of the way. Remember: avoid the closest car park every time!

Stick to eating whole grains! Remember: colour is not an indication of a whole grain, as bread can be brown because of molasses and other added ingredients. Always read the ingredients to see if it is a whole grain.

Stay hydrated! Often we think we are hungry when actually we could be thirsty. So before reaching for a sugary snack, have a glass of water, and wait 15 minutes and see how you feel.

STEPS TO A

By Dolly

It is important to be aware of your portion sizes, because larger portions mean more calories consumed. Remember: it is not just what you eat, but how much!

Eat lean and low-fat sources of protein at almost every meal such as tofu or chicken. You will stay fuller for longer!

Avoid eating sweets every day! Treat yourself once a week with your favourite chocolate bar, biscuit, etc. Remember: always eat slowly to appreciate the taste, and to avoid consuming more fat and sugar!

It is not bad to enjoy sweets and the odd greasy takeaway from time to time. Yet, eat-ing unhealthily without regular physical activity will cause unpleasant effects on your

health, but also on your emotional state. Remember, it is never too late to take the steps to a healthier you!

HEALTHIER YOU!

Next Weeks Theme: “Happy Hour”

Page 15: Hungappa | Term 3 - Week 2

As I enter this room of many, I can’t help but feel like I don’t belong, a feel-ing of trepidation falls upon me as I wonder why everyone has gathered here, in this spot. Why now... am I too early or am I too late, time lately has seemed to blur into one giant spinning carousel travelling at the speed of sound. I stop for a moment try to gather my thoughts and listen, I can’t stay still, and I can’t concentrate in this cacophony of strange and unfamiliar voices. The room is pale and mono-tone, one that does not reflect creativity in the slightest.

I can’t help but wonder how anyone is suppose to find inspiration in a room like this, but then again, I feel the room, any room, is just a vessel for the mind just like our bodies, to be placed in and unleashed.

I try to make out figures, faces amongst the pan-demonium all I see is a muddy haze of unfamiliar figures and shapes, they might as well have been chalk outlines. There is a strange musky aroma to the room, like an old house or room that hasn’t been cleaned in a very long time. This smell triggers sudden urge to leave as well as an overwhelming dizziness. I do not wish to be here any longer, I cannot stand to be within these walls for a second more. As I turn to leave so do all the figures in the room turn towards me. All attention focused upon my gaze, I might as well have been a stature frozen by medusas glare. I could not move. I could not talk. I had to leave.
