What Scouting mean to me?

A scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly,courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave,clean, and reverent. These would become the newpillars to my journey to become a better person, andto serve society. From the time I bridged up fromCub Scouts to Boy Scouts these pillars of character

I have come to call it are ones that I try, with the bestof my abilities, to follow in order to become a bet-ter person. After many years of adventures, laughs,and challenges, I am nearing a major step in myjourney to become a better scout. As a scout I haveexperienced what it requires to be a successfulleader; it requires many things but the most impor-tant one is patience. With patience one can learn tounderstand others and to effectively lead a group tocomplete a task with utmost efficiency. And this iswhat I strive to become to this very day.

Scouting for me is a place to learn new skillsand to meet new people. Scouting is a place whereI can learn skills such as pioneering, orienteering,leadership, and making friends. Scouting is a placewhere I can have fun and learn while doing so. Ihave learned simple skills such as tying a squareknot to orienteering the park that we meet at. Its aplace that I can make new friends and strengthenmy friendship with others. Each day at scouting isan adventure; you get through the day knowing thatby the end of it you would have had a moment whereyou enjoy or a moment that makes you more knowl-edgeable. In scouts I learn more on how to lead agroup of people how to make this seem more pro-fessional and skills that I will need in life that otherplaces dont offer, not only in the outdoor adventuresbut also inspiration from my leaders and friends. Mythink of my fellow scouters as my younger and olderbrothers, having my mind set that I would like to

help them and to achieve what they have done. Ienjoy scouting and all that it has to offer but, I havenot had a drive to strive for more in scouting, I havestarted a small spark that would roar into a re andrestart my drive to achieve more goals in scouting.

What Scouting mean to me?

When I was young, I follow my troop becauseof my brothers and thought it was pretty fun. When Igot older I join in to cubs and liked for the first year,but I got tired of it and got bored. As I got older andmoved up to Boy Scouts I learned to enjoy every-thing there was about it. What I learned from cubs

till now, I will always remember it for a life and it hasmade me more mature. Scouting has changed mylife and has made me who the person I am today.

Scouting for me is very important and hashelped me develop as a person, not only throughadvancements and merit badges but also throughseveral years as an assistant patrol leader and pa-

trol leader. Scouting has given me and many oth-er kids in my patrol the opportunity to go campingand learn about important skills like lashing or rstaid that we may not have otherwise had. In addi-tion, were able to meet people from all throughoutsouthern California, whether it be in our own troopor on multi-Troop campouts like TT9 or Lien Ket.Troop 1003 also serves to help remind and tie usto our Vietnamese culture through the learning ofthe Vietnamese scout law, oath, anthem, and scoutsong. Merit badges like First Aid, Swimming, andEnergy have helped me learn about a variety ofsubjects that I wouldnt have been interested in oth-erwise. In addition, as a patrol leader, Ive learnedto be more patient and encouraging with my scoutsand become much more responsible. Even simplepositions like quartermaster and scribe help to en-courage responsibility and reliability for the youngerscouts in a patrol. The ideals of the scout law andscout oath also help to build character and developa strong sense of morality at a young age. The scout

slogan of Do a good turn daily and scout mottoof Be prepared become inherent parts of how myscouts and I try to act in our lives and are reinforcedby the many aspects of scouting that I have grownto love.

The Meaning of Scouting:My Feelings

What is boy scouting to me? Boy scouting forme is learning new things every meeting and eve-ry camp and, how to do better. The things I learnfrom the camps and meetings are how to be a goodleader in certain situations. Also I learn new things

with the leaders telling me what to do and how todo it better. For example, during one of my TroopsBirthday camp when Tien, Chris, Andy, my brotherand I went to put up the flag late at night on the firstday. Our Troop Leader and Unit Leader, anh Huyand anh Hau, helped us put up the flag for the firstday by telling us what to do for the lashings and howto do certain lashings better like the square lash ofhow to wrap the lash toward the inside which waseasier for us. Also I learned how to use a compass

correctly like placing it on a flat surface and point itin the direction you want which I learned from myformer Patrol Leader Chuong turn Assistant Sen-ior Patrol Leader. Another thing I learned is howto sheer lash from Thinh, a former Patrol Leaderturned Assistant Senior Patrol Leader, who helpedme step by step before one of our flag ceremonies.Scouting has taught me many things and ways todo better during my scouting life.

The Super Camp

From July 8th-14th, I got the opportunity toexperience Trai Khai Pha, or Venturing Supercamp,at Camp Fiesta Island in San Diego. For me, thiswas my rst camp with Kha, so I was very excited.Littledid I know that this long week would end up be-

ing one of the most memorable experiences in mylife. Throughout the week, everyone was split upinto teams where we would do activities together,mine being the Sea Otters. Activities during theday were mainly on the water, anything from kayak-ing to dragonboat sailing to board-sailing. Tr. Nghi and the staff dida great job planning the program,not only allotting time for us to playout in the water, but having nightactivities as well. Although each

activity was fun in its own way, themost memorable night activity waskayaking out on the waterfront towatch the reworks at SeaWorld.Day in, day out, it was endless funand continuous bonding with ournew teams through team-buildingactivities and much more. Eventhough many of us campers camehome sunburned, it was worth it;we ended up making new friendsand sharing experiences that wewill never forget. In my team, I met

a guy whose mother happened to be in the sampatrol as my dad at Tung Nguyen VI Woodbadcourse. Although we did not know each other rst, we became very good friends over the weeLike myself, many, if not all, of the lucky campethat attended shared experiences that are unforgetable. In Vietnamese, Khai Pha loosely translatto explore, and at this camp, I denitely explora lot more about Scouts; it is not just an organiztion, but a world and lifestyle that is waiting to unraveled.

The Camping Experienceof a Lifetime

My father told me about this trip and at first Iwas reluctant to even consider it, because I wantedto focus on classes and internships for the summer.As time passed my dad brought it up to me again,I reconsidered and wondered if I would ever get an

opportunity such as this one again. I knew it wastime to look into it and I decided to find out more.As I dug deeper, I found out that this trip was sortof an exclusive expedition, which absolutely madeit more interesting to me. Knowing a little bit aboutthe campgrounds that we were going to also mademe very excited to see what was in store. I had readthat BWCA was a very renowned destination forlakes and campers. I found that we were going tocanoe in Minnesota and that the nature over there

was spectacular. On a whim, I decided to just to gowith it, not even caring about my schedule aheadof time. I made up in my mind that this would be apriority for me and that I wouldnt want anything toget in the way of my unique experience.When things began to roll into motion, I had to pre-pare for training and to meet the other people that Iwould be going with. Within the people going fromSouthern California, I met Truong Viet, Tim, Steven,and Randall. They all seemed very nice after get-ting acquainted and I knew that I would be able towork with themon this trip asa great team.

The training

got us

ready by teaching us the various basic strokes canoeing as well as what to do in the case of a cnoe capsizing. We all participated to do what neeed to be done to prepare for the trip. Overall we hagreat training sessions and learned a lot.This trip has got to be the best camping experienI have ever had in my life so far. It was such an spirational trip that made me not only work hard balso reflect deeply on many things in my life. This trip was by far the most physically challening thing that I have ever attempted in my lifecannot remember anything in mylife that demanded so much of mystrength before. From paddling thecanoe for hours at a timeto one man carrying the60lb canoe for over halfa mile, teamwork was

to success. We worked together to help each otherif someone was too exhausted or to balance the tipof canoe in order alleviate and distribute the weightof the 16.7 feet long canoe. Our teamwork playeda crucial role in giving us all memories that will lasta lifetime. The Truong of the trip didnt tell us thatour first portagewas going to belongest portageof the trip. I hadnot expectedanything andwhen finally themoment came toit, I found myselfstanding in themiddle of theportage feelinghelpless. I was

physically inca-pable of goingany further.I screamed andyelled in an at-tempt to let outmy frustration. I forced myself to pick it up and con-tinue because I knew I would be holding down theteam if I had not tried my best to go forward. When Itried to continue further, I felt so happy to see peopleahead to me coming back and helping to take the

load that I was so fatigued to hold on my shoulders.We worked as a team and that taught me to comeback and share the pain with my other teammateswho also needed help. On one of the most memo-rable experience of the trip, I was designated with afellow group member, Dan, to scout out for islandsso that we could claim the nice area for that day. Thismeant that we as a team would have to navigateand power through the course for that day to get tothe islands before any other group could. Because

of the high demand for nice locations, this had to bedone for most days on our trip. Paddling with Danwas probably the most difficult task that I was en-trusted with. It took enormous amounts of strengthand mental perseverance to endure this voyage. Iremember want-ing to almostpass out, butwas encour-aged and moti-

vated by Dan to continue on.I remember having to eat any of my snacks just have the energy to expend. I had to drink a 5-hour eergy so that my arms would not give out on me. Daand I both paddled forwards across the lake whewe had no coverage from any hills or mountain

Something thats worth doing is worth doing weThis quote stuck with me not only on the trip, bback at home as well.I noticed during the trip that I began to be less higmaintenance. Things that would regularly bother,

ritate, or scare me back at home simply didnt anmore. All of the luxuries we had at home were lebehind and discomfort was a normal occurrence camp. For example, the lack of hygiene or eating food that was slightly dirty did not contribute to areluctance of doing what I had to do. I simply juate with dirty hands because it seemed so naturalme. Killing bugs that were flying around was justdaily routine that I was used to. Steven, Tri, Randaand I had a goal every night to kill all of the mosq

toes that were in our tent to avoid being bitten in tnight. I would never do that at home, especially wmy hands.During our portages in the begin-ning, we would have mosquitoesand horse flies biting ourskin and feet, but by theend, we just simply hadto continue through the

portage without any

hesitation because we just needed to finish it before

they bit us more.

Just jumping into the lake would suffice as my bath

for the day. Washing the dishes with Randall andtouching the leftover food and utensils of people

was enjoyable and not scary to touch.

I also noticed that I gradually became less and less

picky as the trip progressed. I made it a goal of mine

to try different things and try to rid myself of my picky

personality. During the trip it became a necessity for

me to do so. I was expending so many calories from

doing so much activity that I needed to eat anything

I could get my hands on. Things I would not nor-

mally eat like carrots, peas, corn, raisins, and other

dried snacks, were forced to be consumed becauseI would pass out if I did not ingest something that

could keep me going. I was inspired by Truong Viet

to pick wild fruit and actually eat it. It was the first

time that I had ever done so, and

I am glad that

I did it.

I was able to

taste for the

first time in my

life, the grand taste of a blueberry, which so

happens to be Truong Viets favorite fruit.

Throughout the trip I have made close friends whi
