Mission: Since 1870, the Humane Society of Missouri has been dedicated to second chances. We provide a safe and caring haven to all animals in need—large and small—that have been abused, neglected or abandoned. Our mission is to end the cycle of abuse and pet overpopulation through our rescue and investigation efforts, spay/neuter programs and educational classes. We are committed to creating lasting relationships between people and animals through our adoption programs and our shelter pet training program. We further support that bond by making available world-class veterinary care.

The Humane Society of Missouri is an independent, non-profit organization not affiliated with any national animal welfare organizations. We do not receive tax support or United Way funding. We rely on the generosity of individuals, corporations, foundations and fees for services. 3

Supporting Vital Veterinary Care for Shelter PetsTen years ago, the Women’s Leadership Council (WLC) was founded as a fundraising and professional networking group. Motivated by her love of animals and a desire to help, Jan Torrisi-Mokwa gathered other professional women together on a mission to help HSMO rescue animals and care for them.

This year, the group has set its sights on supporting HSMO’s Shelter Veterinary Medical team. Every day more than 600 shelter pets are under the watchful eyes and professional care of HSMO’s two full-time shelter medicine veterinarians and their team of veterinary technicians.

A typical day for Dr. Julie Brinker and Dr. Mark Wright begins in the special examination room to diagnose new animals and follow up with ongoing cases with medical needs. They examine all animals coming to all three shelters: cats, dogs, equine, fowl, rabbits, rodents and reptiles. Dr. Brinker has even investigated conditions in a roadside zoo case our Animal Cruelty Task Force was handling.

Next, Drs. Brinker and Wright visit each individual animal. Shelter animals must be monitored closely for signs of disease: cough, vomit, diarrhea, hair loss, scratching, dry/dull coat, lameness, and discharge from the eyes, nose or ears. They are also watched for behavioral issues like circling, growling, challenging, cowering or disinterest in food.

Past WLC projects have included the purchase of a mobile rescue vehicle and funding for the fight against puppy mills.

HSMO’s Women’s Leadership Council encourages professional women to connect with each other and make a difference for homeless animals. To join, visit hsmo.org/wlc or call 314-951-1542.

ANIMAL CRUELTY TASK FORCE

Ripley County - June 15A concerned citizen called HSMO’s Animal Cruelty Hotline

alerting investigators to animal neglect at a self-proclaimed animal rescue/sanctuary.

Investigators removed 38 dogs and cats from filthy housing where two people were also living. Throughout the residence, rooms were covered in feces and soaked with urine. It is mind-boggling to think of the results of nearly 40 animals urinating and defecating inside a house every day.

Piling up that amount of waste is dangerous to animals and humans. Animal cruelty investigators wore respirators inside the residence and, even with that protection, had to leave several times during the rescue to clear their lungs.

Three litters of beagle and hound mixes fought for survival along with medium- and large-breed dogs and a number of cats.

The animals’ owners agreed to surrender custody of the dogs and cats to the Humane Society of Missouri where they were immediately treated so they could be adopted into healthy and loving homes.

119 Animals Rescued from Hoarding Situations

“ It is a travesty to keep animals in these horrific conditions. Our first priority is for their safety, health and well-being. We are thrilled to report many have recovered and found the loving homes they deserve. We are grateful our generous donors understand the importance of our work to help these suffering animals.”

– Kathy Warnick, president of the Humane Society of Missouri

The Animal Cruelty Task Force Never Stops, Because the Need Never Stops

Howell County - May 11A concerned

citizen notified the Howell County Sheriff’s Office about dogs in obvious need. ACT Investigator Chad Gard arrived at the home, where he saw dogs so thin that ribs and spines were showing. He was also overwhelmed with the smell of urine.

As he was planning the next step, Gard discovered a second house on the property. Both homes were trash-strewn and dirty with floors and furniture soaked with urine. Skin infections, eye inflammations and filthy surroundings plagued 55 dogs rescued from the two houses.

The majority were Chihuahua- and Terrier-mixes, ranging in age from one-month-old puppies to mature, adult dogs. The owners agreed to surrender custody to the Humane Society of Missouri.

Newton County - August 7Police had already been working with two people to reduce

the number of dogs kept in a junk-filled, boarded up house. As is the case with hoarders, the police had thus far been unable to convince them to give up any dogs, even though they were obviously suffering. It took a call from concerned neighbors and a warrant to enter the property to rescue the 26 horribly neglected dogs.

Chad Gard, statewide investigator for the Humane Society of Missouri, responded to the call for help. He found small- to medium-sized dogs standing in urine and feces up to six inches deep. Those conditions pose such a health risk that Animal Cruelty Task Force members wore hazardous material suits to rescue the animals. Without such protection, the dogs suffered from urine burns and stains on their paws.

Fleas and skin infections made their lives even more miserable. As is common in neglected dogs, their toenails were overgrown to the extent they were curling into the paw pads.

In a few hours, the rescued dogs were on their way to the Humane Society headquarters where their lives immediately turned around.

Kitten recovers from severe chest woundApollo arrived, starving and injured, at the Humane Society

of Missouri doors at just five weeks of age. Apollo’s situation was serious. A crusty, painful wound covered nearly the entire chest of the tiny kitten.

Had someone mistreated Apollo? Was it an accident? Impossible to tell, but none of that matters when a tiny kitten is hungry and in pain. The Humane Society of Missouri was there to help. Expert veterinarians carefully examined the wound. They prescribed medication and gentle treatment. After nearly two months of wound treatments and loving care from staff and a volunteer foster family, Apollo healed. Because of the Humane Society’s help, he’s living a normal life with a wonderful family.

Crippled Puppy Learns to Walk AgainA Good Samaritan found a four-month-old mixed-breed lab

puppy in their yard, unable to walk, and brought him to the Humane Society of Missouri.

Radiographs revealed that both of Bowie’s elbows were broken, and the fractures had been left untreated for some time.

Bowie endured four separate surgeries during his months- long rehabilitation. In addition to daily pain medication, antibiotics, and TLC from staff and volunteers, the sweet-tempered dog required daily physical therapy.

Bowie began to take a few steps at a time. A volunteer foster parent continued Bowie’s rehabilitation with daily walks.

Once Bowie was healthy enough, he became part of CHAMP Rescue. Through this unique partnership, select HSMO shelter dogs spend several weeks at a Missouri women’s prison learning basic manners with an inmate trainer. There, Bowie’s rehabilitation continued and he learned valuable skills to help him transition into a forever home.

Bowie’s extensive medical care, the valuable training, his never-give-up attitude and friendly personality to all combined to give Bowie the second chance he needed, and the forever home he deserved.

Integrated Veterinary Pain Management Care Improves Pets’ Health, Longevity

A new center to treat pain and promote health in pets is now open at the Animal Medical Center of Mid-America (AMCMA) in Maryland Heights. Located in the same building as the brand new Best Buddy Pet Center, AMCMA is of the few veterinary hospitals in the United States to combine multiple approaches to pet rehabilitation. It is the only nonprofit pain center in the St. Louis area and is open to the public.

The Pain Management Center provides advanced care after surgery or injury, help with arthritis pain in aging pets and even exercise regimes.

• Underwater Treadmill. Using the therapeutic properties of water, this is a safe method for rehabilitation after injury and improving body condition.

• Rehabilitation. Therapist-assisted and condition-specific exercises can improve limb use, balance, and strength, as well as manual therapy including range of motion, stretching, and massage.

• Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy. A patient’s own blood cells are processed and injected back into the specific joints where arthritis is occurring. The high concentration of growth factors and healing proteins helps reverse the joint damage and aids the body in restoring healthy joint tissue.

• Class IV Laser Therapy. Laser therapy targets specific body areas to relieve pain and inflammation, stimulate tissue regeneration, and helps the body release endorphins to fight pain naturally.

• Weight Loss and Conditioning Programs. An exercise regimen that is fun for your dog! Nutritional consultation, exercise plans, and staff-support can help your pet lose weight safely, get in shape, and stay in shape.

• Acupuncture. Treating conditions or symptoms by stimulating specific acupuncture points, acupuncture can promote healing and provide pain relief. It may even reduce or eliminate the need for surgery and long-term medication use.

• Chiropractic Care. A pet experiencing pain from an injury or condition may benefit from adjustments that target specific areas of the body. These adjustments can help the nervous system function better, allowing the body to heal.

And just like all other services provided by the Animal Medical Center of Mid-America, all proceeds benefit animals in need at the Humane Society of Missouri.

To learn more about our Integrated Veterinary Pain Management Center or to see if your pet could benefit from the services, call 314-802-0358.

Innovative Pain Management for Pets

The AMCMA operates three nationally accredited veterinary practices in the St. Louis area. Proceeds benefit thousands of abused, neglected animals helped by the Humane Society of Missouri.

Hurricane HarveyWeather forecasts warned, a possible category 5 hurricane

named Harvey was heading for Houston ready to dump a record-breaking amount of rain on the low-lying city and surrounding areas imperiling millions of people, and their pets. Before the hurricane struck, HSMO’s Disaster Response Team readied staff and equipment for immediate response to calls for assistance.

On August 29, an eight-member sheltering and rescue team set out for Houston. At the request of the Houston SPCA, over the next 12 days our team worked in a temporary shelter caring for hundreds of pets displaced by the storm and floods; partnered in the rescue of 67 dogs and cats from a flooded property; transported hundreds of animals from overcrowded local shelters to a large temporary shelter; and returned to St. Louis with 51 cats and 36 dogs. HSMO had already received 43 dogs evacuated from shelters in Georgia and Louisiana in anticipation of Hurricane Harvey.

“We’ve learned from past disasters that relieving shelters in disaster areas of their pre-storm adoptable animals frees up much-needed space for animals directly affected by the storms,” said Debbie Hill, vice president of Operations for the Humane Society of Missouri.

Hurricane IrmaAlmost before they had a chance to shower, sleep and

re-stock and refurbish equipment, reports of Hurricane Irma’s threat to Florida moved HSMO’s Disaster Response Team into action once again.

On Sept. 13 a four-person emergency sheltering team was deployed to a large temporary animal shelter set up by the Atlanta Humane Society in Roswell, Ga. A second six-person HSMO team arrived in Georgia on September 15 to transport animals from shelters in southern Florida to the Roswell shelter making room for animals displaced by the hurricane. During the week, the sheltering team cared practically round the clock for hundreds of dogs and cats that eventually would be sent to shelters that could find them permanent homes. Meanwhile, the transport team traveled more than 16,000 miles receiving dogs and cats from shelters in southeastern and southwestern Florida and taking them to the Roswell shelter. On Sept. 21, the entire team returned to St. Louis with 61 dogs and 24 cats, all adoptable pets released by the shelters in Florida and Georgia to make room for hurricane-affected animals.

In all, more than 200 hurricane-affected dogs and cats came to the Humane Society of Missouri to get their second chance for forever homes.

“We are proud the Humane Society of Missouri is able to provide professional disaster response whenever and wherever needed,” said Kathy Warnick, president of the Humane Society of Missouri. “We are able to send well-trained, experienced teams to help homeless and displaced animals thanks to the generous support of our donors. It’s gratifying to know the companion animals from disaster areas will have a chance for the wonderful lives they deserve.”

HSMO’s Disaster Response Team is trained to work in adverse post-disaster conditions such as extreme hot or cold weather, swift and contaminated flood waters, debris-strewn areas, and partially collapsed structures using a variety of equipment to free entrapped or stranded animals. Donations to support our disaster response efforts can be made at hsmo.org or call 314-951-1542.

“ We are happy to give these animals a great chance for a loving home and allow storm-affected pets to stay local, giving them the best possible chance to be reunited with their families.”

The new Best Buddy Pet Center, opened in April, brings people and pets together in a friendly and inviting atmosphere. The domed skylight, reminiscent of a faceted jewel, offers a sparkling welcome for visitors and shelter animals.

A Best Buddy Adoption TaleKayla found her Best Buddy,

“Princess” on August 29. After spending time with each other and an adoption counselor, the two ladies bonded. Princess was fed Purina One during her shelter stay, and went home with a bag of Purina One to maintain her good health.

The overcrowded Westport Adoption Center lacked space for a gift shop. Adopters and shoppers looking for pet-related gifts and supplies now have many choices in the Best Buddy Gift Shop.

The Animal Medical Center of Mid-America, open to the public, offers a full range of veterinary services including surgeries and the Integrated Veterinary Pain Management Center.

Replaced Overcrowded Building from the 1970s

Both lobbies – the Adoption Center and the Animal Medical Center – are a far cry from those in the former over-crowded and shop-worn building. The new center’s open, bright and colorful layout invites children and adults to get involved in improving lives for rescued pets: from reading to them to giving them forever homes.

The building also houses state-of-the-art animal rescue and rehabilitation facilities and a world-class veterinary center, the Animal Medical Center of Mid America. And, the lower level features the Community Education Center for expanded humane education programs, meeting spaces, storage and animal care areas.

The new center replaced a hard-to-find, landlocked property. In contrast, the Best Buddy Pet Center is fast becoming a prominent landmark at Page and Schuetz roads.

The Barn Buddy team of hand-picked ranch ambassadors like to be petted at local events. Newest Barn Buddy Geppetto was rescued with severely overgrown hooves. He could barely walk or even stand. The individual who rescued him helped him to recover to a healthy state but when her rescue was having financial trouble and was forced to close down she reached out to Longmeadow. Fortunately, Geppetto and 30 of his equine companions received the love and care they needed at Longmeadow. Since his promotion as a Barn Buddy, Geppetto seems to think he’s a horse. He’d rather be with other ranch horses than his fellow donkeys … and he loves watching polo.

NOT!“Teacup” Pet Pigs? Adult Pigs End Up at the Ranch

Pot bellied pigs are always hanging out at the ranch, surrendered to Longmeadow Rescue Ranch by owners who were surprised that their cute little piggy had grown to 60 pounds or more. That’s because they were led to believe they were getting a “mini” or “teacup” pig.

“Teacup pigs don’t exist,” explained Ranch Director Amanda Mullen. “That’s just a sales pitch. They are only miniature when compared to a domestic farm pig that can weigh up to 900 pounds.” It takes three to five years for a miniature piglet to reach adult weight.

These adorable and intelligent animals are, indeed, good pets. But getting one on a whim is not the way to go, said Mullen. You have to know your pig’s requirements for a happy home.

Speaking of happy homes, every homeless pot-belly is ready to leave the ranch for the right family. “If you want a pet pig, now is the time because we have so many,” said Mullen. “They are all healthy and people-friendly.”

LONGMEADOW RESCUE RANCH

Meet adoptable horses and farm animals during open house hours every Friday from noon-3pm and Saturday from 11am-3pm, or online at longmeadowrescueranch.org/adopt.

Preparing for a pet pig• Find out if your municipality

allows pigs.

• Make sure you have extra time. Pigs are highly intelligent and require lots of social interaction, whether they live indoors or out. Belly rubs count.

• You must have a fenced-in yard where they can root and be outdoors for all or part of the day.

• Pigs are easily trained to walk on a leash. You’ll be surprised at how quickly they learn with snacks as a reward. They like to learn tricks and can walk up and down stairs.

• Make sure you have a veterinarian who welcomes pot-bellied pigs in his/her practice. Your pet pig will need routine vaccinations, hoof trimming and deworming.

Horse Friends Enjoy SleepoversSo Do the Girls!

Friends who met playing softball are now hanging out together all the time thanks to their adopted Longmeadow horses. This summer Briggs (right) took a trailer ride over to Maxwell’s house and they had a sleepover.  The girls had a blast riding trails all day and playing in the creek. Every time they stopped, Briggs and Maxwell had to be touching. Sounds like a dream come true for the rescued horses and the girls who love them.

Briggs, rescued in May 2014 was found in a 10x10 pen with no shelter, no water and no food.

He gained 184 pounds while recovering at Longmeadow. Despite his mistreatment by people in his past, the horse is a sweet soul — smart and athletic, too. He was adopted in May 2016 by Kim Snider for her daughter Jenna.

Maxwell was severely neglected at his previous home and was rescued in October of 2016. He was so emaciated, he gained 185 pounds before he was ready for adoption. Once he recuperated from his poor health, he was evaluated and found he was already trained for riding. The Kleekamp family adopted Maxwell, their first horse, for daughter Sammy.

“We are Longmeadow advocates and tell everyone about them,” said Trish Kleekamp. Maxwell is such a sweet horse and wonderful addition to our family.

At press time 20 adoptable pigs were awaiting second chances.
