Our programme at a glance...

From all of the team at Dog Ears we are delighted to welcome you to our inaugural children’s book festival, Humdinger! – a key children’s event for UK City of Culture 2013, Thursday 7th – Saturday 9th March 2013.

Humdinger! celebrates words, stories and imagination and features some of the biggest and best-loved names in children’s books, including: Julia Donaldson, Roddy Doyle, Meg Rosoff, Alex T. Smith and Malachy Doyle. Humdinger! is Dog Ears’ first large-scale children’s book festival and kicks-off on World Book Day 7th March 2013.

Our programme showcases fun, family-friendly, innovative events over three days, in a range of venues across the city. Children will have a chance to meet their favourite authors and illustrators, experience beautiful music, take part in craft workshops, develop new skills and have their imaginations sparked left, right and centre. Humdinger! will inspire a love of reading for years to come and is sure to be a must-attend event for babies, children and parents in 2013.

Since setting up in 2010, Dog Ears has proven that there is a huge appetite in Derry-Londonderry for children’s events which celebrate books and offer children and parents quality experiences. We’re committed to bringing the best writers and illustrators to meet local children and we want to do something amazing for UK City of Culture 2013. We’re proud to present this festival programme and delighted to work with great partners to deliver events that will fill the city with little bookworms.

Dog Ears is an award-winning children’s media company based in Derry, making books, apps, tv and events for children. Roddy Doyle will be reading from his extensive catalogue of books in the beautiful surroundings

Roddy Doyle is the author of nine novels, two collections of stories, and Rory & Ita, a

memoir of his parents. He has written six books for children and has contributed to a variety of publications including The New Yorker, McSweeney’s, Metro Eireann and several anthologies. He won the Booker Prize in 1993, for Paddy Clarke Ha Ha Ha.Roddy has written for the stage and his plays include Brownbread and Guess Who’s Coming for the Dinner. He co-adapted with Joe O’Byrne his novel

The Woman who Walked into Doors and he co-wrote with Bisi Adigun a new

version of The Playboy of the Western World.

He also wrote the screenplays for The Snapper, The Van, Family, When Brendan Met Trudy and he

Special Bedtime Story Sessions presented by Booktrust as part of Humdinger! to encourage all the family to get involved in the sheer joy and pleasure of reading aloud.  Parents and carers are invited to bring the kids along in their pyjamas to share old and new bedtime stories and rhymes. Alex T. SmithStorytelling through words and live drawing with a bright young talent in kids books

After considering several career options (space traveller, cake maker, professional rabbit) and working as a production assistant for an outdoor theatre events company, Alex decided to train to do the job he’d wanted to do since he was five - an illustrator specialising in the world of children’s publishing. Alex graduated with a 1st Class Hons degree in Illustration in 2006 and having won second place in the Macmillan Prize for Children’s Picture Book Illustration in his final year, Alex began working on his first commission as he put his degree show up!

Since then Alex has created picture books, many of which have won prizes and have been read on TV during the Bedtime Hour on the CBeebies channel.

Alex is also the creator of the CLAUDE (right) fiction series for early readers. The first title, CLAUDE in the City was selected for the Richard and Judy Children’s Book Club 2011 and was shortlisted for the Waterstone’s Children’s Book Prize in 2012.

Meg Rosoff was born in Boston, educated at Harvard and St Martin’s College of Art in London, and worked in New York City for ten years before moving to England permanently in 1989. She is best known for the novel How I Live Now (Puffin, 2004), which won the Guardian Prize, Printz Award, and Branford Boase Award and made the Whitbread Awards shortlist. Her second novel, Just In Case (Penguin, 2006) won the annual Carnegie Medal in Literature from British librarians recognising the year’s best children’s book published in the U.K.

She worked in publishing, journalism, politics and advertising before writing How I Live Now

(which is due to be released in 2013 as a feature film directed by Kevin MacDonald and starring Saoirse Ronan). Her books have won or been shortlisted for 18 international book prizes, including the Carnegie medal and the Orange first novel prize. Meg’s most recent book is There Is No Dog. Picture Me Gone, her sixth novel, will be published this month.

After the performance in St. Cecilia’s, Meg will be available to sign her books.

Quercus EnsembleRoald Dahl’s Little Red Riding Hood – a musical storytelling event for all the family.

Experience this fantastic musical adaptation by the composer Paul Patterson, of Roald Dahl’s Little Red Riding Hood. A dark and funny take on the traditional fairy tale. BEWARE! Prepare for a few of Roald Dahl’s twists and turns along the way – this is not the story quite as you know it! The performance will be accompanied by projected images of Quentin Blake’s original illustrations.

Quercus Ensemble draws on some of Ireland’s finest internationally renowned musicians, and aspires to breathe new life into classical music with its fresh and dynamic performances. This production for chamber ensemble and narrator offers a wonderful opportunity for children to experience live music and meet the performers and their instruments.

This production is supported by the Roald Dahl Foundation.

PictiúrContemporary Book Illustration from Ireland 2013

Pictiúr is a digital exhibition showcasing the best of Irish Children’s Book Illustration. Curated by Niamh Sharkey, Laureate na nÓg, in association with Children’s Books Ireland, the exhibition will bring the work of twenty Irish children’s book illustrators to international audiences in Austria, Italy and Belgium in 2013.

Dog Ears is delighted to host the digital version of the exhibition during our festival, and especially excited to showcase the artwork of Lily Bernard from Cartoon Saloon who was a key artist on our Puffin Rock project.

Malachy DoyleReading, singing and a lovely Saturday afternoon

Doyle’s stories are inspired by his childhood in Ireland and his children growing up in rural Wales. He will be reading from his

Baby’s Day Out Book launch and storytime in the library

Dog Ears is delighted to host the official launch of the beautiful board book Baby’s Day Out at the Rhyme Time session in the Central Library. Every child born in 2013 will be gifted a specially commissioned book to encourage parents and children to embrace books and reading together from day one. The board books are a lovely keepsake for the all the babies born in 2013. Come along and enjoy the celebration. Anita Robinson will read the book aloud and from a selection of other favourites to suit the young audience. Anita is a teacher, writer and broadcaster, who works in schools on a programme of language development through the medium of story, poetry and creative writing. She broadcasts weekly opinion pieces on BBC Radio Foyle and is a frequent contributor on Radio Ulster. Her regular column is published on Tuesdays in the Irish News. She tutors both children and adults in creative writing for the Pushkin Trust and other arts and community organisations Live music and refreshments will be served for all to enjoy.This project has been supported by:

Saturday Treats

Series of Scary Stories!David Maybury and Deirdre Sullivan will be telling scary stories from the Annie Graves collection throughout the afternoon in the Plaza area of The Playhouse.

Clive McFarland, Live Mural DrawingClive McFarland created the beautiful Humdinger! Logo and artwork and will be at The Playhouse on Saturday afternoon creating a large mural on the spot! Since he was little he only wanted to draw things and avoid papercuts. He grew up in Northern Ireland but took a boat to Liverpool to study animation and illustration at Liverpool School of Art and Design. Surviving endless paper cuts, he passed his degree with flying colours and (after a few other less exciting jobs) became an illustrator. Clive is currently working on his first picture book. So he still gets paper cuts.

Tesco Humdinger! Indoor PicnicIt might be Spring, but we thought it might be wise to have our Tesco Humdinger! Picnic with a roof over our heads! Our festival sponsor, Tesco, will host a free Indoor Picnic for children attending events at the Playhouse on Saturday 9th March. Subject to availability.

Teenage Kickz - Fun and GamesThe Teenage Kickz Project is delighted to be involved in Humdinger! and will be hosting free games and sports for kids throughout the afternoon to help raise the profile of their work. The Teenage Kickz, Red Card to Sectarianism Schools Project is aimed at Key Stage 2 pupils and explores issues around sectariansim, racism and discrimination through the writtern word, illustration, debate and play.

The Little Festival of Books as part of the Humdinger! Children’s Literature FestivalFéile Bheag na Leabhar (The Little Festival of Books) is the first children’s Irish language book festival to take place in the city. The festival runs from 7th to 9th March and will feature a series of Irish language storytelling and reading events for children alongside an Irish language book-fair featuring the very best

in Irish language publishing. Féile Bheag na Leabhar is organised by Derry City Council in partnership with the Humdinger! Children’s Book Festival

and is funded by Foras na Gaeilge. All events will take place during Irish Language Week 2013 at Cultúrlann Uí Chanáin and further
