Help design New Camp Humphreys

Volunteers needed to attend Sensing Sessions for new facilities

The New Camp Humphreys is taking shape, and help is needed from Soldiers, Family Members, Civilian Employees and even Teens as the time arrives to start replacing dirt with new buildings and facilities.

Dozens of new buildings, neighborhoods and facilities are planned for the expanded Camp Humphreys, and master planners have already “sited” what will be built where.

But now the expansion is reaching the stage where “customer input” is needed from the Community.

This input involves “sensing sessions” where members of the Community are shown plans for the new projects, get an explanation of what went into designing the facility or building and then being asked for suggestions and comments.

Sensing sessions usually involve 10 or fewer people and need to include all ranks and grades as well as Family members and retirees.

FMWR Marketing is gathering a list of individuals willing to participate in upcoming sensing sessions.

If you’re interested and willing, please send your Name, Rank or Grade, Unit, Age, Sex, Cell phone number and E-mail address to [email protected]. Individuals will be contacted as needed.

This is your chance to help design the Camp Humphreys of Tomorrow.

Page 8: Humphreys Happenings - Mar 2012

If you’re participating in the Biggest Losers Contest and looking for some good tasting food that won’t hurt your weight-loss efforts, here are some recipes that have been submitted. Family & MWR takes no responsibility for tastes. We are just passing them on. If you have a favorite you would like to share, please E-Mail it to [email protected]

Pumpkin Pudding: Decadent, creamy pudding for less than 150 calories--and it helps you lose weight! Just combine a 6-ounce container of nonfat vanilla yogurt with ½ cup canned 100% pure pumpkin puree and a dash of cinnamon. Serve chilled.

Vegetable Soup: Studies have shown that just by starting a meal with a fiber-rich bowl of broth-based veggie soup, you can reduce your total calorie intake by 20 percent. That's because this "veggie first course" helps to fill you up, so you wind up eating less at the main meal.

Ginger Green Tea: Nursing a warm mug of tea is a calorie-free way to de-stress after a long day without falling prey to emotional eating. As an added bonus, research suggests that regularly drinking green tea may give you a slight calorie-burning advantage. Steep your tea with a thin slice of ginger root for an extra punch of flavor.

Fiery Chicken Salad: Adding a few dashes of fiery hot sauce to your food slows down your eating big time so you're less likely to eat past the point of fullness. For a simple lunch, whip up a chicken salad with diced chicken breast, 1 tablespoon reduced-fat mayo, hot sauce to taste, and any diced veggies on hand. Serve over a bed of lettuce (and have a glass of water handy!).

Set up your table at Spring Run

Directorates, Private Organizations, Youth Groups and other Community groups are invited to set up information tables and hand out items at the Spring Run scheduled as part of the annual Eggstravaganza on Saturday, April 7 at the Zoeckler Gymnasium

Army Community Service (Spouse and Child Abuse Prevention Month), ASAP, DPW-Environmental (Earth Day) and Child, Youth & School Services (Military Child Month) are already involved in either the 5K Run or Eggstravaganza, but there’s still room for more.

Tables will be set up along both sides of the road where the run will start. But in order to be included, groups have to make arrangements with Sports Director Lonnie Herring.

“This is an ideal opportunity for groups like the Boy and Girl Scouts, the Rugby Club and others to reach a lot of people in a short period of time,” Herring said. “We don’t allow anyone to sell anything at either the run or Eggstravaganza. But we want to afford as many organizations as possible the chance to get involved. The more we have the merrier. But we have to know in advance.”

Interested groups should contact Herring at 753-8807 or the Super Gym at 753-8031. Herring said that “volunteers to help administer the run are always needed” and that he hopes some of the organizations will be willing to help make it a successful Community event. Groups that want to help with Eggstravaganza should contact Special Events Coordinator Paul Parrish at 753-8820.

Got a Question? Go to Marketing Facebook Family & MWR is trying to provide the Camp

Humphreys Community a ready source of information and answers to their questions by centralizing FMWR replies to a single Facebook site.

Currently, many FMWR questions appear on the Humphreys Facebook page. But because of the volume of traffic on that site, answers can be delayed.

The Marketing Facebook page will be monitored seven days a week by FMWR officials, with a goal of providing answers or status reports on a daily basis.

Outdoor Rec, Bowling, Youth Sports, Playgroup, Sports & Fitness, Camp Humphreys Teens, ACS and other FMWR activities will continue to maintain Facebook pages to provide information and schedules, but answers will be on the FMWR Marketing page.

In an effort to encourage everyone to “Like” the Marketing Facebook page and start using it, we will be holding a monthly “What were they thinking” photo caption contest on the page. We will run a photo from a FMWR Travel Mugs, Gym bags and more.

This month’s photo comes from the Polar Bear Plunge when two young ladies were caught going the wrong way. What Were They Thinking?

Just enter your caption on the Marketing Facebook page and see if you win. By the way – we tried this caption contest in February, but didn’t have any entrants.

Facebook is becoming one of the primary venues for the distribution of information at Camp Humphreys, which can be seen by results of the annual FMWR Customer Satisfaction Survey. When individuals were asked to identify the Top 5 ways they got FMWR information, Happenings was No. 1, followed by Facebook.

Last year, Facebook didn’t make the Top 10.

Perhaps it’s the overseas environment that makes Facebook so attractive, but there are Facebook pages for just about everything.

Some of the more popular at Camp Humphreys include the official Facebook monitored by PA, the Humphreys Wives/Spouses Facebook, the Traveling in Korea & Asia Facebook and the Where to Eat in South Korea Facebook. There’s even a Facebook page for Homeschoolers.

AFN-Osan and the Osan Passenger Terminal maintain Facebook pages, as do Humphreys American School and the Osan High School PTSOs.

Want to sell something? Check out the Humphreys Flea Market Facebook page. Many of these pages were started by individuals in the Community and you have to ask to join.

That’s not the case with the FMWR Marketing Facebook, though. Once you “Like” us. You’ll be able to ask your questions and get answers. .

Using Chopsticks

One skill every American should learn During their tour of Korea is how to master chopsticks.

Chopsticks are an important part of Asian Culture with a long and rich history. It is believed that the first chopsticks were developed more than 5,000 years ago in China – long before the fork or spoon were developed in Western Europe.

Early Asian man would retrieve his food from the fire using sticks or branches broken from trees.

Later, as the population grew and resources became scarce, people would cut food into smaller pieces to save fuel because the smaller portions cooked faster. This eliminated the need for knives, and chopsticks became the utensil of choice

The use of chopsticks spread from China to other countries such as Korea, Vietnam and Japan. While initially only used for religious ceremonies in Japan, chopsticks quickly gained popularity there as well, and their use became as widespread as the rest of Asia in no time.

It has been said that using chopsticks will improve your memory, increases finger dexterity and can be useful in learning and improving skills such as Chinese character printing and brush painting.

Many Asian superstitions revolve around chopsticks as well.

For example, if you find an uneven pair at your table seating, it is believed that you will miss the next train, boat or plane you are trying to catch. Also, dropping your chopsticks is a sign of bad luck to come.

There are many styles and types of chopsticks for different occasions and uses.

One type is for eating normal meals. Chopsticks for the kitchen are longer and often plain or “leftover” chopsticks, made of wood.

Like toothbrushes, each family member starting at age 2 or 3 has their own set of chopsticks, with a different design or mark for identification.

Chopstick design is quite basic, but can be quite fancy. They are made of wood or metal – including gold and silver. The most common ones are made of bamboo, although even those can be lacquered or inlaid with jewels.

And, once you learn how, you can eat an entire meal with chopsticks – including rice. It takes a bit of practice, but Asian food is often prepared bite-size to make it easier. And, of course, the Koreans use sticky rice, which can be picked up as a lump. You can learn to use chopsticks by trial and error or get a Korean to show you how. Either way, it’s a skill you should learn.

March 8-12 -- Yeongdeok Snow Crab Festival -- Yeongdeok-gun area (Samsa Marine Park -- This festival usually runs from February to March, the best season for Yeongdeok snow crabs. Long ago, these snow crabs were regarded as such delicacies that they would be specially presented to the king. King crabs in Yeongdeok are reared in the sand and therefore have a particularly clean and pure taste. There are many snow crab related events on offer at the festival. The ‘Snow Crab Public Auction’ is especially popular. Here over 100,000 snow crabs are sold, and this is the perfect opportunity for visitors to purchase snow crabs at low prices and enjoy the marketplace atmosphere. Visitors to the festival can ride on a snow crab fishing boat, take part in a snow crab cooking competition, and even sample various snowcrab dishes for free, such as daegetang (snow crab soup) and snow crab noodles.

March 16-25 -- Gwangyang Maehwa Festival -- This festival takes place at Maehwa Village near Gwangyang city in the Daap-myeon region of Jeollanam-do province. The area is famous for having the largest amount of Japanese apricot trees in Korea, and in fact the village takes its name from these trees. When the maehwa trees bloom they produce beautiful white flowers, known as ume flowers. The sight of these trees blooming throughout Maehwa Village and the surrounding Baegum Mountain is very picturesque, and every year people come from all around to walk beneath the blossoming trees and to purchase the organic maehwa (apricot) products that are produced in the region

More Things to Do in Korea March 3-June 10 -- Gyeongnam Goseong Dinosaur World Expo -- The

‘Gyeongnam Goseong Dinosaur World Expo’ is held in the Goseong region in Gyeongsangnam-do province which 100 million years ago was inhabited by dinosaurs. A wide range of interactive programs and activities will be prepared so visitors can really get a taste of what life was like when dinosaurs ruled the world. At the World Fossil Mineral Experience Hall, there are plenty of fun-filled educational programs for visitors to enjoy. Visitors can become archeologists and touch and feel the different stone and rock formations that make up the earth, learn how to observe the different fossil layers, and even participate in fossil excavations

April 1-10 -- Jinhae Cherry Blossom Festival -- From the end of March to early April, Korea’s largest cherry blossom festival takes place in Jinhae. Over 2 million tourists come from all over the world to walk along the tree-lined streets and picturesque mountain paths. There are so many cherry blossom trees in Jinhae that when the wind blows it seems as if it is raining cherry blossom petals. The Jinhae Gunhang festival also commemorates Korea’s famous Admiral Yi Sun Shin and includes a military band parade in addition to the many cherry blossom-themed events. The ‘Jinhae International Military Band & Honor Guard Festival’ has been developed into a leading platform where civilians, military personnel and government officials can come together to celebrate the military culture. At the festival, visitors can enjoy a wide range of fantastic performances including marching band & honor guard shows, fringe performances, concerts, and street parades. Moses Miracle April 7-9

Once a year, Korea experiences one of the most phenomenal events in the world. Known as the Moses Miracle, the sea between the Korean islands of Modo and Jindo part, creating a 2.8 kilometer land bridge that connects the two islands.

The Jindo Miracle Sea Festival takes place at the same time as this phenomenon, and people come from all over the world to take part in the festivities.

Many walk the seafloor road to gather abalone, crab, seaweed and even large fish that get caught in the tidal pools. The road is 40 to 60 meters wide and is slippery and uneven. Enterprising merchants sell thousands of pairs of high rubber boots to participants (about 5,000 won a pair). And as ugly as the boots are, it is recommended that everyone purchase a pair. Otherwise, you’ll get soaked to the knees.

The sea road only stays open for about 90 minutes, so you have to hurry to get across and back. But it’s worth the effort. This year’s festival is expected to be bigger than ever since last year’s event was cancelled because of fear of spreading hoof and mouth disease.

Located in the southwest portion of the peninsula, Jindo is best known as the home of the Jindo – Korea’s only nature breed of dog and a national treasure. Watch the April Happenings for further details and a festival update.

Curiosity Answering Station

By Jiseon ‘Jei’ Lee FMWR Marketing Korean Intern

Curious about how things work? Want to experience an earthquake? Do you know the difference between the way American and Korean boats are rowed?

These are just a few of life’s curiosities that can be answered at the Gwacheon Science Museum in Seoul.

A group of Camp Humphreys youngsters visited the museum recently as part of a special program put together by Child, Youth & School Services (CYSS) and I had the chance to ride along.

Although I live in Incheon, this was my first visit to Gwacheon and I was just as curious as the children.

Gwacheon is a place where you can learn many things -- Advanced Science & Technology, Basic Science, Natural History and a special hall devoted to Korean Traditional Science.

We saw and experienced a car of the future, rockets, structure of the human body, tried on a space helmet and saw specimens of a tiger and rabbit and touched the Garra rufa (fish). We even saw a dinosaur.

The museum also offers visitors the opportunity to experience an earthquake and typhoon. It includes a dozen different areas with too many special activities and exhibits to write on a single page. It’s great for children of all ages.

Curious and want to see for yourself?

The museum is open Tuesday-Sunday and is very inexpensive – 4,000 won for adults and 2,000 won for children. You can get there by subway. Just take Line 4 to Exit 5 (Seoul Grand Park Station).

Your curiosity will be answered.

Facebook making it easier to catch Osan Space-A Flights

Osan Airbase is making use of Facebook to announce pending flights to Seattle, Yakota, Misawa and Kadena in Okinawa, providing travelers flight notifications up to 72 hours in advance.

The terminals is also reporting how many seats are filled on each flight and what categories are managing to get a free seat. Here’s a sample message from last month:

For 16 Feb 2012, we had 1 flight to Yokota AB, JPN continuing on to Seattle Int’l, WA. For Yokota we had 35 seats available and 20 seats filled, and Cat 6 was the lowest category selected with a date and time of sign-up of 15 FEB 2012 0834Z. For Seattle we had 14 seats available and 14 seats filled, and Cat 5 was the lowest category selected with a date and time of sign-up of 10 FEB 2012 0441Z.

Osan runs Patriot Express flights to Seattle twice a week, with the Tuesday flight landing at Yokota near Tokyo and the Thursday flight stopping in Misawa in far northern Japan.

Since PCS (Permanent Change of Station) and TDY )Temporary Duty) passengers are booked before planes leave Osan, Space-A passengers who board in Korea are assured a free ride all the way to the States. Passengers must make their own way from Seattle to wherever they are going in the States.

The use of Facebook is an experiment being conducted by several different Air Force passenger terminals in an effort to make it easier for Space-A passengers to get updates on flights and available seats.

For Space-A specifics, please call Osan at:

Chop Chae – Korea’s Chop Suey

By Jiseon ‘Jei’ Lee FMWR Marketing Korean Intern

When you ask Americans about their ‘favorite’ Korean food, many will mention Chop Chae – Korea’s version of Chop Suey.

A mixture of cellophane noodles, vegetables, mushrooms and either beef or pork, Chop Chae is a favorite at many special occasions in Korea, including weddings, birthdays, 100-day celebrations and, of course, the Lunar New Year.

And, of course, it’s something you can make at home.

To make authentic Chop Chae you need oyster mushrooms, black mushrooms, spinach, carrots, onion, pork and cellophane noodles.

Julienne the oyster mushrooms, pork, onion and carrots while boiling the spinach and cellophane noodles in salted water until soft.

Drain the spinach and mix soy sauce, sesame oil, pepper, sliced green onion and crushed garlic to taste. Heat a small amount of oil in a pan and put in the mushrooms, pork and vegetables. Stir-fry for about five minutes.

Put the boiled and drained cellophane noodles in another pan and season with soy sauce, sesame oil and sugar. Stir fry for two minutes. Finally mix the two pans together and you have Chop Chae – an Excellent Taste of Korea and something you can make at home. Taste of Korea – Chop Chae

Polar Bear Plunge – Check the block in your FMWR Bucket List

The Camp Humphreys Family & MWR Bucket List is now being handed out at Newcomer’s Briefings and is available throughout the Community.

The Bucket List contains 100 suggestions for things to do at Camp Humphreys, 100 Things to do in Korea and 100 Things to do in Asia.

Each item is accompanied by a box you can check when you complete a listed task or attraction.

“The purpose of the Bucket List is really pretty simple,” said FMWR Marketing Chief Mike Mooney.

“We want everyone – from the lowest ranking private to the highest ranking general to realize that a tour in Korea is an opportunity and that there are literally hundreds of new experiences available.”

Suggestions for the Bucket List came from Soldiers, Civilians and Family Members. Ideas were solicited through Facebook pages and through both Happenings and the Weekly Flash.

“There were great suggestions, and a lot of people listed the same events or attractions,” Mooney said. “But there were also a lot of unique ideas, too. As soon as the brochure was distributed, we started getting E-Mails about how many of the 300 suggestions people had already completed and what ones they planned to try in the future.”

The Bucket List was a popular movie that starred Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman. It refers to a list of things people want to accomplish before they die.

The Family & MWR Bucket List is 300 things people should try before they leave Korea. Suggestions run the gamut from “eat of bowl of Kimchi” to “swim with the sharks in the Busan Aquarium.” “There’s a great mixture of cultural and practical suggestions,” Mooney said. “The 300 items are a great cross-mix from the Camp Humphreys Community. There’s something there for everyone. Pick up your copy today.”
