    NOTES

MEMORY VERSE:GALATIANS 2:19–20 (ESV)For through the law I died to the law, so that I might live to God. I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself up for me.

DEVOThroughout the New Testament Jesus speaks against those who take pride in their own righteousness. He destroys any idea that anyone can contribute to their salvation. No work, no deed, no attendance, no background can make us right before God. So in order to prove and remind the Galatian church of the truth, Paul tells them that our only hope is in what Jesus has done for us on the cross and resurrection. Although we cannot earn our salvation, followers of Christ become new creatures (Read 2 Cor. 5:17) and a decisive break with sin is made. Sin’s power is broken when we trust and follow Jesus (Read Romans 6:6-7). Still, the struggle against sin remains. When Jesus died for our sin, he not only paid the price for sin, but he also broke the power of sin over the believer. Now, followers of Christ are alive in Jesus Christ and continue to repent of remaining sin in their lives as they seek to be continually changed by Jesus.

Read 2 Corinthians 5:17. What do you think it means that a follower of Christ is a new creation? Have you been made new?

  • Paul says that Christians now live by faith (Gal. 2:20), what does that mean? What are ways that you can live by faith?

How does Jesus giving up His life for us transform the way we live for Him?

Often we think that being crucified with Christ is all about what we give up—practicing self-denial and saying no to sin, temptations, and worldly pleasures. But it also includes living in the power of His life! When Jesus saves us we are united with Him and He alone gives us the power to continue to follow Him. He is our encourager, He is our supporter, He is our power, and our friend.

    MONDAY NOTES

  • MEMORY VERSE:JOHN 14:16-18 (ESV)I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, to be with you forever; that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you and will be in you.

DEVOJesus gives His followers a precious gift: His spirit. There is no such thing as a Christian that does not possess the Holy Spirit. Romans 8:9 says “Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to Him,” (ESV). While Jesus lived on earth, he was literally with His followers, but now Christians are indwelt by God’s spirit living within them. Jesus points to this reality and promises it before He dies.

Read John 16:5-15. Why does Jesus say it is to their advantage if he goes away in verse 7?

Hard as it may be to believe, Jesus tells Christ followers today that it is better for us today who live after the ascension of Christ than the disciples who were actually living with Jesus while walking on the earth. Unfortunately, there is often a confusion on who the Holy Spirit is and how He works. Jesus calls the Holy Spirit a helper, meaning that the Holy Spirit comes to Jesus followers and stands with us and for us.

Read John 14:26- What does the Holy Spirit remind us of?

    TU

    ES

    DA

YThe ministry of the Holy Spirit doesn’t operate in confusion but in clarity. Jesus says that the Spirit works as He reminds us of truth Jesus has already said. What that means is that God’s Spirit isn’t revealing to us new things outside of the Bible, but to teach us all that Jesus has already said. God’s Spirit not only tells us what Jesus has said in the truth, but enables us to understand it (1 Corinthians 2:14). Our understanding of the Bible does not have to intellectual inability, but rather through God’s spirit giving us understanding as we ask Him in prayer to help us understand (Psalm 119:118).

Galatians 5:16 says to walk by the Spirit- what do you think that means? What are some ways that you can walk in the Spirit? What are ways you can renew your mind? Read Romans 8:5.

  • TUESDAY NOTES MEMORY VERSE:JOHN 17:17–19 (ESV)Sanctify them in the truth; Your word is truth. As you sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world. For their sakes I sanctify Myself, that they themselves also may be sanctified in truth.

DEVOThroughout the New Testament, followers of Jesus Christ are continually reminded of the unity that they have with other Christians. Much is said today about community, unity, and friendship, but followers of Christ aren’t merely to pursue unity itself, they are to pursue the truth of Jesus Christ and as they do so, they are unifiedThe word sanctify means to be set apart. The Christ follower is set apart for God and His purposes alone.

Read vs. 17 again. How is the Christ follower sanctified?

Write down a few ways that you can pursue, know, and apply God’s truth. What keeps you from pursuing truth?

The Christ follower is set apart by means of the truth. As our hearts and minds are exposed to the truth of who God is, our lives are changed. We don’t change automatically, or simply with age, we change as we see the character of God and as we do so, God will change our lives. Jesus says that as believers individually and collectively pursue the truth, they will be unified for a specific mission.

What’s our mission? Where is Jesus sending His followers in verse 18?

  • God saves us and unifies us for a purpose: to proclaim the truth. Proclaiming the message of Jesus is the clearest purpose of The Church. Believers are to continually seek to be more like Jesus, but also need to tell the world that they need Jesus.

How does your mission of proclaiming Jesus to the world change the way you live?

What are things that prevent or keep us from proclaiming the truth of Jesus?

    YWEDNESDAY NOTES

  • DEVOAs we learned last night, God’s spirit is not only essential in enabling us to hear and accept the gospel of Jesus Christ, but also in our efforts to be made more like Jesus. The very beginning of the Bible reveals that we are made in the image of God (Gen 1:26-27), meaning that we are given the ability to reflect God’s character and glory. Although affected by the disease of sin, the Christ follower has been set apart from the world to be made like Jesus.

If you can only imitate what you first know, what is the first step in imitating God? Do you pay close attention to the words and actions of Jesus to know and understand His life? Do you seek to imitate His character?

Ephesians 5:2 says that we are to walk in love because Christ loved us and gave Himself for us. God’s love is clearly demonstrated in His willingness to die for us, to pay the price necessary to save us. Similarly, our love for God is demonstrated by our obedience to Him and our love for others.

Read Matthew 16:24-25- what does Jesus require of His followers?

Are there things, people, or goals in your life that take priority over following Christ?

Ephesians 5:3 says that “impurity should not even be named among us…” (ESV). Has impure speech, conduct or entertainment become normal to you?

Do you partake in things that mark an unbeliever?

Do you enjoy things that Jesus came to die for?

BONUS VERSE:JOHN 15:18–26 (ESV)“If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you. If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. Remember the word that I said to you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they kept my word, they will also keep yours. But all these things they will do to you on account of my name, because they do not know him who sent me. If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have been guilty of sin, but now they have no excuse for their sin. Whoever hates me hates my Father also. If I had not done among them the works that no one else did, they would not be guilty of sin, but now they have seen and hated both me and my Father. But the word that is written in their Law must be fulfilled: ‘They hated me without a cause.’“But when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness about me.

Guidelines for the bonus memory verse + Any student is eligible to say the bonus verse. + The bonus requires reciting John 15:18–26 in one sitting before 3:00pm

DEVORead 2 Timothy 3:12-what is the promise to those who follow Christ?

Persecution, whether heavy or light, is promised for all Christ followers. Our Savior was murdered, 11/12 disciples were murdered, and millions of Christians since. Although we are commanded to be a witness to the world, Jesus does not say that the world will always appreciate, nor does he say they will even like us; He actually promises that the world will hate those who follow Him (1 John 3:12-13). Jesus never confuses or fools anyone into thinking that the Christian life is free from conflict or suffering.

Read Philippians 3:8-11. Why does Paul say his suffering is worth it?

When someone becomes a Christian they are united with Jesus, including not only His rejection and persecution, but also united with His reward (Matthew 5:10-12, John 16:33). Surprisingly, Paul says that suffering is not something to be feared, but something that should bring us joy, not because he enjoys prison or beatings, but because it is when we are at our weakest that God decides to show Himself the strongest.

Are you ready for the conflict that comes with following Jesus?

If you won’t stand boldly for Jesus in front of unbelieving friends and family, will you do so in front of those that are combative towards the message of Jesus?

Read Matthew 28:18-20. Notice that Jesus does not leave us alone, but remains with us. How does Jesus’ presence affect the way we live with boldness?

Take a couple minutes and pray that God would give you boldness and courage even if the world is against the message of Jesus.
