1 HUMBOLDT COUNTY BEEKEEPERS ASSOCIATION BOARD MEETING MINUTES Thursday, May 3, 2018, 3:30-5:00pm Location: Ag Center UCCE Conference Room, 5630 So. Broadway, Eureka, CA 95503 Board members present: Justin Reeve, President; Paul Leslie, Co-chair Board; Britt Frey; Tim Talbert; Janelle Bucklin, Treasurer; Summer Daugherty, Secretary Board members absent: Jamie Bucklin, Vice-President Agenda approved with addition of review of updated HCBA informational flyer (Item #8) and removal of Item #9. Public Comment: no public present, no public comment. Action Items: 1. April 2018 meeting minutes approved. Items for discussion (Public comment requested at start of each item) 2. Treasurer’s Report (Janelle Bucklin). Asset balance for HCBA account as of 4/30/2018 at $5,548.72. See attached treasurer’s report. 3. Swarm List Status- due date, disseminate to public, updating website (Paul Leslie): Paul provided update. List complete and will be updated on the website. Discussion of swarm list use protocol. Suggested Swarm list protocol for dispatch: when dispatch is contacted (Paul Leslie), dispatch to make a reasonable effort to contact members on the swarm contact list, if no response from members on the swarm list, then use judgement in determining best interest of the bees and safety of the community. All people who signed the swarm list interest signup sheet at the March 2018 meeting have been contacted by Paul Leslie and emailed a swarm list signup application. Just a reminder that all members interested in being on the swarm list can contact Paul Leslie and must fill out appropriate paperwork and sign release of liability form. Swarm flyer to be printed. 4. Review and discuss Waiver of liability: Board reviewed and discussed HSU release of liability example. Board discussed requiring a school administrator/principal signs the waiver acknowledging that they have informed the parents. Britt to update form and bring back to the board for review. 5. Club Honey Harvest Dates: Board decided on August 26 th @ Mad River Brewery, Blue Lake, CA. This date has been confirmed with Mad River Brewery for use of their warehouse. 6. Committee Updates a. Bee Fest Committee - Janelle Bucklin, Committee Chair. Janelle and Justin presented on BeeFest merchandise and BeeFest scheduling. b. Outreach Committee-Britt Frey and Jamie Bucklin, Committee Chair: Britt working on release of liability. Botanical Garden working on Bees and Birds presentation and invited HCBA to present. c. Meeting Committee-Justin Reeve, Committee Chair: no report. d. Club Apiary Committee-Paul Leslie, Committee Chair: Britt Frey discussed club apiary with Botanical Garden. Paul and Britt to follow-up with Botanical Garden board of directors. Botanical Garden interested but concerned about liability. Purpose of club apiary was discussed. Board prefers the Club apiary is for the sole purpose of club functions unless otherwise approved by the board. e. Special Events Committee-Summer Daugherty, Committee Chair: no report. f. Meetings, Lectures and Workshops. We meet on the �rst Thursday of every month (except December) with the Beekeepers Q&A Forum at 6:00 p.m. followed by the main program & guest speaker starting at about 6:30 p.m, The meeting takes place in the UC Extension auditorium at the Humboldt County Department of Agriculture at 5630 South Broadway, Eureka, CA.There is a $2.00 donation at the door. Refreshments are provided & a ra�e is held featuring beekeeping equipment & related items.

New and experienced beekeepers are encouraged to come to the meeting at 6:00 p.m. to exchange information on seasonal successes and challenges. Many take advantage of this time to compare notes and troubleshoot.All members of the community are encouraged to attend the general monthly meetings. It is a great opportunity to meet local beekeepers and learn about bees. Everyone is welcome

The Humboldt County Beekeepers Association (HCBA) has been active since 1995, and is a 501(c)(3) nonpro�t organization dedicated to beekeepers and the conservation of pollinators, while promoting best management practices for sustainable beekeeping.
