Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time International Literacy Day

September 8 was proclaimed as International Literacy Day in 1965 by UNESCO, the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and

Cultural Organization. Its first celebration took place in 1966. Each year on September 8, UNESCO publishes data on world literacy and highlights the need to promote literacy. In 2011, one in six adults in the world was not literate and over sixty-seven million children are out of school. Literacy rates suffer most in Africa, but no country is

exempt from the problems of an illiterate population. Illiteracy is tied to poverty. It prevents men and women from advancing economically

and socially. Many charitable organizations that provide aid to the poor include literacy work among their efforts to advance the

situation of the people they serve.

ENDINGS — BEGINNINGS Labor Day is upon us. Tomorrow, September 3rd, we celebrate that holiday. For many of us, as we were growing up, Labor Day marked the end of summer vacation.

Once Labor Day rolled around, we knew that school would begin the next day. That is no longer true. For many people, Labor Day comes after one, two, or even three weeks of school already under the belt. Labor Day still does mark for us the end of the summer, though. We know that, after the holiday, things begin to pick up speed as we head into autumn and winter. The summer sun that we enjoyed begins to turn in at an earlier hour. The warm days of summer begin to yield to cooler days and colder nights. Even with a respite for “Indian Summer”, we know that the days of autumn and winter will quickly come. With all of that, we begin to look towards holidays. Even though Labor Day is tomorrow, we begin to think about Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. Plans are already being put into place by many people for those days. We are always about looking ahead in our lives, aren’t we? Let’s not look too far ahead as we pause to celebrate Labor Day this year. Instead, I ask you to prayerfully consider some realities this holiday. The US Department of Labor in their publication, The History of Labor Day, reminds us that Labor Day began to show "the strength and esprit de corps of the trade and labor organizations". There are many who would argue today that there is little “strength and esprit de corps” in our labor force. The loss of jobs in all sorts of sectors and all sorts of areas in our country has adversely affected many people. Jobs that were once looked upon as guaranteed income for life and comfortable retirement after working at a place of employment are fewer and farther between. For many people, there is little “joy” in their job. For many others, there is not even a job to be found. As we celebrate Labor Day this year, then, please join me in prayer that those who seek employment may be able to secure the dignity of a job so that they could provide for themselves as well as for their loved ones. Let us pray for those who have labored long and hard as well, that their benefits and retirement may remain secure in these financially unstable times. “Lord, give success to the work of our hands.”

PLEASE REMEMBER THEM Please pray for the priests and deacons who have served the Diocese of Gary so faithfully and whose anniversaries of death are this week:

September 2: Rev. Herman A. Schoudel (1970) September 3: Rev. Joseph Pusateri (2006) September 7: Rev. Joseph P. Smith (1986) September 8: Rev. Roman S. Wojcicki (1963)

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE Thoughts on work for Labor Day

♦ Hard work never killed anybody, but why take a chance? ~ Edgar Bergen

♦ Whenever you are asked if you can do a job, tell 'em, "Certainly, I can!" Then get busy and find out how to do it. ~ Theodore Roosevelt

♦ One of the symptoms of an approaching nervous breakdown is the belief that one's work is terribly important. ~ Bertrand Russell

♦ Going to work for a large company is like getting on a train. Are you going sixty miles an hour or is the train going sixty miles an hour and you're just sitting still?

~ J. Paul Getty

DIOCESAN CONFERENCE As we prepare for the Year of Faith, there will be a Diocesan Conference here at St. Thomas More on September 21-22. For more information regarding the conference, you may go to the Diocese of Gary’s web site: http://dcgary.org/pdf/2012-2013-Diocesan-Conference.pdf To register for the conference, you may go to http://dcgary.org/diocesan-conference.htm

RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS (RCIA)

The RCIA is the means by which those who are not Catholic come into the Catholic Church. The RCIA may also be good for those who were baptized Catholic but never received their other sacraments (Reconciliation, Eucharist, and/or Confirmation).

There will be two inquiry sessions (you only need to attend one of the two) for those who may wish to be a part of the RCIA program on the last two Tuesdays of September: September 18th and 25th. RCIA Classes begin weekly on Tuesday, October 2nd. We will meet every Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. in the Parish Conference Room. Sessions never end later than 8:30 p.m.

New Evening Bible Study Group Little Rock Bible Study

The Gospel According to Matthew All adult parishioners are invited to join our new Evening Bible Study Group. Each session will include a short audio or video instruction, group and individual exercises,

prayer and discussion. We will be using a program from Little Rock

Scripture Study which lights the way to understanding the message of the Bible,

developing a more personal relationship with God and a deeper relationship with others in

your faith community. Our study will focus on the Gospel According to

Matthew: Matthew presents Jesus of Nazareth as a great teacher and Son of God, emphasizing that he is Emmanuel ("God with

us") and the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecies. The extensive teaching sections of this Gospel were used to instruct

Christians in the early centuries of the church. This study will reacquaint you with the Master Teacher.

Join us for 10 Weekly Sessions: September 5th through November 14th

(No meeting on Halloween, October 31st) 6:30 to 8:00 pm in the Parish Conference Room

The cost of the program is $15.00 to cover the study materials. To register, please call or email Carolyn McGill at 836-8610 x 332, [email protected] ASAP!

You may pay the registration fee the first evening of study.

Peace and Social Justice Migrant Ministry

The STM Migrant Ministry wishes to thank all parishioners who donated to the food drive and gave monetary donations.

The Ministry is extremely grateful to all parishioners who have given up their Sunday afternoons year after year to attend the

Mass, help load and unload the donated goods, set-up and clean-up after the potluck dinner, and bring delicious side dishes and desserts to share. Without your dedication, it would be hard for St. Thomas More to sponsor this Mass. Thank you again for

your continued support of the Migrant Ministry.

My Two Cents Thoughts on Living Stewardship

Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time Today’s second reading urges, “Be doers of the word and not

hearers only.” (James 1:22). Following Jesus is not easy. Sometimes we have reasons for not doing things—we are too

tired, too old, too sick, too needy, too busy with responsibilities. All of us are called to live generously and

selflessly and the opportunities are endless. What is your offering of stewardship in gratitude for God’s goodness? Do you need to increase your giving, pull back

from something, or change your commitments in some way?

Pastoral Care Ministry If a friend or loved one would like to receive Communion at

home, call the Pastoral Care Office at 836-8610, #315.

Vocations Committee Pope Benedict recently told a group of U. S. bishops, Catholic

schools “remain an essential resource for the New Evangelization” whose source education in the faith is “a

priceless treasure which each generation must pass on to the next by winning hearts to Jesus Christ and shaping minds in the

knowledge, understanding and love of his Church.” A solid Catholic education is essential for youngsters to begin

thinking about what God wants for them—including the possibility of religious vocation.

Diocesan Year of Faith Conference

The “door of faith” is always open for us….” ushering us into the life of communion with God, and

offering entry into his Church. It is possible to cross that threshold when the word of God is proclaimed and the heart allows

itself to be shaped by transforming grace. To enter through that door is to set out on a

journey that lasts a lifetime. In order to celebrate this Year in a worthy and fruitful manner, Bishop Melczek and members of

his Priest Council have planned a special Conference on two different weekends in September at two different locations:

September 21 & 22 at St. Thomas More Parish

September 28 & 29 at St. Paul Parish, Valparaiso

All parishioners are invited to attend one of these two weekends. The Conference will provide tools for us to better

understand and live our faith with renewed conviction. Keynote speakers will share their insights on the Second Vatican Council. The breakout sessions will focus on the

Catholic Catechism & the Creed — all are tools to help us live our faith. For additional information, a complete brochure can

be found in the vestibule of our church or you may go to www.dcgary.org for full information and registration. Please

note there is no fee for the Conference, only a $10 fee for lunch. Call (219) 769-9292, ext. 280 to learn more.
