HUMBER’S HISTORYHumber takes its name from the Humber River, which has great significance to the history and development of Toronto.

Flowing through Adobigok (now Etobicoke), which means Place of the Alders in the Ojibwe Algonquian dialect, the river has long been important to the Aboriginal peoples of this area.

Humber was created when the Province of Ontario introduced the Ontario College System in 1967 with the goal of creating a highly skilled and knowledgeable workforce for Ontario’s growing economy.

In 50 years, we’ve grown and evolved into an innovative and collaborative learning environment: a leader in polytechnic education.

We’re looking forward to the next 50 years.

Half a century – that’s how long Humber has been offering life-changing learning experiences. “WHEN I FIRST GOT HERE, THE WELCOME WAS AMAZING.”

I came to Toronto from Delhi last year to do my Business – Accounting diploma at Humber. I was looking for somewhere that was diverse, and I found it! The transition was actually easier than I thought it would be – Humber is such an inclusive community, and there’s so much to get involved with, that I quickly felt like I was at home.

When I first got here, everyone told me that getting involved and making connections would be key to making my first year successful, and they were right. I got involved with First Year Experience and the International Centre, first as a student, then as a volunteer, helping to organize events and working as a peer mentor.

It can be difficult to make the transition into college, but getting involved and staying busy will really help. You may find that it’s hard to talk to people and make friends, but joining a group makes it a lot easier to connect with other people.

SHRADHA 3RD SEMESTER, BUSINESS – ACCOUNTING DIPLOMA

ATHLETICSThe Humber Hawks are the most successful college sports program in Ontario, leading both the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) and the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) in overall medal count. In the 2015/2016 season, the Hawks won six national and 12 provincial gold medals in team and individual sports. In 2015/ 2016, both of the OCAA’s Players of the Year were Humber students.

And if you don’t want to play competitively, there are lots of other ways to get involved in athletics, from free fitness classes and gym access to intramural and extramural teams. Of course, you can always come out and cheer “Hawk Yeah!” from the stands as part of Hawk Nation.

HUMBER STUDENTS’ FEDERATION HUMBER IS A DIVERSE, ENERGETIC PLACE WHERE THERE’S ALWAYS SOMETHING GOING ON.The Humber Students’ Federation (HSF) provides services to more than 30,000 students in the Humber and Guelph-Humber communities. These include a flexible health and dental insurance plan, bursaries, sleep lounges and a free tax clinic – which help make your time on campus as enriching as possible.

HSF is proud to be the official on-campus student government, advocating on behalf of every student on a multitude of platforms and issues. HSF offers many leadership opportunities, encouraging all students to get involved, run in elections and have their voices heard. HSF also hosts a variety of fun events around campus, including Frosh and Frost weeks, and sponsors more than 50 clubs across all three campuses.

HSF will undergo an organizational rebrand in September 2016, so stay tuned for their new name and exciting new initiatives.

NORTH CAMPUSHumber’s largest campus, located on the banks of the Humber River at Finch Avenue and Highway 27, is easily accessible from Brampton, Mississauga, Toronto and York Region, and is a public transit ride away from Toronto’s bustling downtown.

Energetic and dynamic, the North Campus is home to our newest building, the Learning Resource Commons, an open, bright, six-storey facility that houses most of the campus’s student services as well as a wide range of study, meeting and socializing spaces. “HUMBER’S SUPPORT HELPED US BUILD A SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS.”Faria: I went to an Ontario university for four years, got my degree, and after working for a few years, realized I’d hit a plateau and decided that I needed more schooling if I wanted to advance my career. I went into the Bachelor of Commerce in Digital Business Marketing, and there I met Courtney.

Courtney: I came to Humber right out of high school. Once I went on a campus tour at the Lakeshore Campus, I knew I didn’t want to go anywhere else.

I’ve always loved organizing and tidying, and eventually I realized that it might be possible to turn that into a business.

Faria: She had already organized my sister’s house, and we all said, “Why don’t you make this into a job?” We then started Declutter with CoCo, and applied for and won funding from the New Venture Seed Fund and the HumberLaunch pitch competition – $29,000 in total.

Courtney: Our mentor has been amazing. The money has been great, but working with our mentor has been even more valuable. He has our back 100 per cent, and we couldn’t have asked for better support.

This program offers you a comprehensive foundation in the basics of visual arts. Working in a studio environment, you’ll explore the creative process with different types of media.

DESIGN FOUNDATION

This program gives you the skills to put your creative flair and interest in visual arts into focus as you begin a career in design. Train in professional design with a diverse curriculum that features courses in interior, graphic and industrial design.

MEDIA FOUNDATION

With small class sizes and expert instruction in design, writing and computer skills, this program is an excellent stepping stone to more specialized media career training.

GENERAL ARTS AND SCIENCE PROGRAMSCHOOSE FROM:

Advanced diplomas take six semesters to complete and usually incorporate a work placement. Diplomas take at least four semesters, while certificates are usually less than four semesters. Technical certificates are generally three semesters.

APPRENTICESHIPS OFFER YOU A CHANCE TO LEARN A HIGHLY SKILLED TRADE IN A NUMBER OF INDUSTRIES.We provide the required academic components towards an apprenticeship including technical theory and in-school training.

Skilled trades play an important role in our economy. The rapid pace of technological change and workforce retirements mean skilled tradespeople will be increasingly in demand in the near future.

At Humber, you’ll use the latest industry software programs and learn in fully equipped labs and shops. Working with skilled instructors, you’ll learn about current trends within the industry and work in a learning environment that mirrors what you’ll see once you’re on the job.

The first step in any apprenticeship is to get a job with an employer who is willing to sponsor you as an apprentice. Once that is done, contact the Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Development* (tcu.gov.on.ca/eng/employmentontario/training/) to start your registration.

Apprenticeship programs are open to domestic students only.

ALEC’S PATHWAY

“MY DESIGN FOUNDATION CERTIFICATE WAS GREAT PREPARATION FOR HUMBER’S INTERIOR DESIGN DEGREE.”

In high school, I wanted to get into architecture, but knew I had to improve my portfolio. My guidance counsellor suggested Humber’s one-year Design Foundation certificate. At Humber, I learned about interior design, which is also known as interior architecture – and I knew that was what I really wanted to do. When I finished Design Foundation, I applied and got into Humber’s Interior Design degree program.

The certificate was great preparation for the degree. Because I’d already studied drafting and model making, I was a lot more confident in my skills.

I discovered in first year that time management is key – all the projects were a little overwhelming at first, but my teachers had great advice. They see new students every year, and they know what our challenges are.

“WORKING WITH CHILDREN IS LIFE-AFFIRMING.”

I went to St. Michael’s College at the University of Toronto and studied philosophy. Once I graduated, I was working in a boring office job when I decided to go to Bolivia, where I volunteered for eight months in a children’s home.

It was an incredible experience, and I realized I felt called to be of service to people.

So five years after graduating from U of T, I decided to go to Humber for the Child and Youth Care diploma, then decided to upgrade my diploma to a degree. Because I had been in the diploma program and got good grades, I was offered an automatic scholarship to move into the bachelor’s degree. I also liked the idea of being able to do an internship.

Child and youth work has offered me a chance to work on behalf of people who were voiceless and marginalized – an excellent way to live out my hopes and dreams.

ASHIKA Sport Management Diploma

If you’re not sure what you want to do, Humber’s a great place to learn because it has so many foundation programs. These programs give you enough exposure that you’ll know quickly if that field is for you. I’ve been very happy with my experience in Humber’s nursing program as it offers more clinical hours than any other college nursing program, as well as an anatomy lab that no other college offers.

Humber’s environment was so welcoming and the people and staff so approachable that it felt like home. The school has a tremendous amount of resources on campus to assist you, and, having been in a prior college program, Humber made it very easy for me to transfer my credits.
