So what does it really mean for you? Here in the house of Rotary we begin to shift our thoughts to next July and start the process of training and re- sourcing our new leaders. This same process begins in Clubs, Districts throughout the world, and even at the RI level. Your 17-18 Presidents are being asked by 17-18 Governor Manzoor to attend both PREP and PETS. Both of these training events will be important to the success of your Club in the upcoming year. DGE Manzoor is also asking District 5330 President Elects to organize their Boards for the 17-18 year. He is working hard on the upcoming District Assembly and wants to make sure the training that will be offered will be effectively used by your incoming Board. It is our hope that all of our Clubs are Deliberate about their plans for the upcoming year. Success is not an ac- cident; it takes planning, and implementation. If your PE is not attending PREP or PETS; why not? Sign up, Make it happen. Getting ready for next year takes thought and commitment. And I know every Club has the ability to get this right and to get it done! But, as our thoughts turn to July 1 and beyond, what does that mean for those of us who are still chasing goals for this current year? Tomorrow is almost always more exciting than today because we pour a ton of potential into tomorrow. We fill it with hopes and dreams and wrap in expectation. And the question really is, what kind of tomorrow will we hand to our new leaders? Hello Rotarians:

Are You Ready for the New Year?

It’s a brand new year! And, just out of curiosity, what does a new year mean to you? Some will have new resolutions they want to keep, and others will rededicate themselves to goals and objectives they have long held. The changing of the year is significant for most of us. So what does it really mean for you?

Here in the house of Rotary we begin to shift our thoughts to next July and start the process of training and re-sourcing our new leaders.

Success is not an ac-cident; it takes planning, and implementation. You can’t just hope things will happen; you have to make them happen. If you don’t yet have a President for next year, You Are Late! Get one; make it happen.

But remember, tomorrow isn’t really made of hopes or dreams, tomorrow is truly only shaped by today. We, the leaders of today, will create the world of tomorrow. And the question really is, what kind of tomorrow will we hand to our new leaders? We only have 5 ½ months left to build our Clubs into what we had dreamed they could be well before we took over as leaders. How will your dream compare with the reality of the Club you hand to your incoming President?

I believe that one attribute of leadership is dedication: Dedication to cause, dedication to goal, and dedication to task. The 16-17 leaders have been having an outstanding year, and I personally do not expect that to change. With dedication, you will reach the goals you set for your year. But there are some additional duties we will have to attend to in order to be ready to turn the helm over. You will have to make sure your PE and your new Board participates in District training. You will have to make sure your new Budget is in order and covers those things that are important to your members. You will have to make sure your new President knows the ropes and can manage your club. You not only have to chase your goals, you have to help create the goals for next year! You have to be a team player and an enthusiastic supporter of your new leaders.

I am excited about our District’s future, and I am proud of every 16-17 President and our District Leaders. I know the best of our year is yet to come!

Yours in Rotary

Bob

Thank you everyone who participated in decorating our Rotary Rose Parade

Float, and particularly “Thank You All” who donated funds in support of our

winning Float.

WATER IS LIFEWATER IS LIFE

On a planet that is seventy percent liquid or water. We know that water is life.

Unfortunately, that high percentage belies its abundance to our society and only a fraction of it is fresh. In an August 2015

article in the Special Issue Section of Technology and Innovation, the challenges of fresh water and environmental issues

indicated that the human population is estimated to grow to 10 billion by the end of the century; one billion people already

suffer deficiencies in water access; and water that could be used for drinking is contaminated by microbial toxins, viral infec-

tions, chemicals i.e. pesticides and manufacturing wastes.

This happens globally. It is happening in our community as well.

On the Torres Martinez Desert Cahuilla Indian Reservation (located in Thermal, California) a federally recognized Indian

tribe and sovereign nation, there is a water problem. The 50,000 acre reservation spans unincorporated towns (Thermal

and Mecca) and two counties (Riverside and Imperial). The tribe has 800 enrolled members, about half of which live on or

near the Reservation. Half of the land on the reservation is underwater, after being flooded by polluted agricultural runoff

water that was dumped into the Salton Sea.

The Environmental Protection Agency has found that the public water system has been out of compliance with federal wa-

ter limits since 1989. The EPA further notes the following as possible ramifications of overexposure to arsenic: Non-cancer

effects can include thickening and discoloration of the skin, stomach pain, nausea, vomiting; diarrhea; numbness in hands

and feet; partial paralysis; and blindness. Arsenic has been linked to cancer of the bladder, lungs, skin, kidney, nasal pas-

sages, liver, and prostate. At times, ac-

cording to the EPA, arsenic levels in the

ground water reached 16 parts per bil-

lion - the United States' Safe Water Drink-

ing Act limits arsenic levels to 10 parts per bil-

lion. There is also aluminum perchlorate in

the water. Aluminum perchlorate inhibits iodine

uptake which is needed for metabolism.

As Rotarians, we want to help.

The Cathedral City Evening Rotary, Club Rotario Tequila and S.C.R.A.P. Gallery are working together to raise funds for

clean drinking water projects and water conservation programs for kids in the Coachella Valley and beyond.

We are doing this in a unique and creative way, through art, by telling a story through pictures that evokes passion and the

power to make a difference. The Water Is Life mural is a permanent piece of art for the community that raises funds. This 4’

x 8’ mural is made up of 280 eco-friendly art blocks. The mural features photos of Rotary International water projects and

artwork created by local children. Each 4” block has a number that corresponds to the donation value (i.e. #25 is $25, #150

is $150). If we sell all 280 blocks, $20,000 will be raised for these programs. Upon completion, the mural will hang perma-

nently in the Cathedral City Library, furthering our water education efforts. We are asking for support from our fellow Rotari-

ans to make this happen.

ROTARIANS AT WORK DAY SATURDAY APRIL 29, 2017

Make a note of this date (it wasn’t listed in the District Calendar in the Directory) and start planning now to participate by doing special projects in your community. What better way to spend a day than working with other Rotarians making things better in the community! If you need ideas for the kind of projects you can do look on

http://www.rotariansatwork.org/ This web page also has sample flyers, Press Releases and other helpful information. Rotarians at Work Day was started by District 5340 (San Diego) in conjunction with a club in Mexico in 2005. The first “Rotarians at Work Day” was in 2006. This event has now become a worldwide phenomenon with over 43 Districts participating. Our District 5330 first partici-pated under the leadership of PDG Milt Levinson. PDG Milt said that they tried it out with his club, Palm Springs Rotary Club, in 2007 and it was such a success that he decided to take it District wide in 2008. The first projects the Palm Springs Rotary Club did were to paint an el-ementary school multipurpose room and to fix up a Veteran’s run down house that he could not afford to repair. The web page http://www.rotariansatwork.org/. Has a list of the projects that were reported during 2016.
