DÉPARTEMENT MSO – CICLaS
HUMANITIESAND MANAGEMENT
Why a joint master’s program in literature and management?
Companies need literature majors
Globalisation and its challenges as well as the recent economic and nancial crisis which has become a crisis of values, has created the need for companies to have within its sta people who master multiple languages; people with strong analytical skills and who also have a good understanding of human nature. Let us not forget that the school of humanities is also a school of humanism.Humanities majors bring intangible assets to companies, assets whose importance have long been neglected.
Literature majors can be proud of this intangible assetIndividuals with a degree in literature who choose to work in the corporate world realise how much this choice of study enables them to work in an area that has for a long time been accessible only to graduates of engineering, economics and management. Literature students are trained to be curious and versatile, so as managers they are able to adapt quickly to various tasks. They also bring to the team a new way to solve problems and approach business relationships.
The Master 2 Humanities and Management program allows literature students to enrich their degree by acquiring knowledge of the business world, its technical functions, and culture, in the context of globalisation. This professional master’s program, backed from its creation by major French and international rms, will link literature majors and recruiters Students who study literature have their place in business. It’s up to them to assume this position with pride.
Who is this program for? This program is opened to both French and foreign students with a bachelor’s or master’s degree in literature or humanities. What is essential is that students are driven by a common interest in current political and economic issues. They must also have a desire to complete their knowledge of humanities with studies in management and law.
They must distinguish themselves by a great command of both French and English as well as strong interest in the Spanish language and culture.

« The current crisis illustrates that businesses need diversity, in every sense of the term. Their future competitiveness will depend on their ability to align all their talents ; including young graduates in humanities with a solid training in management. This new program enriches the current master degree programs oered at Paris-Dauphine. »
« Businesses are looking for people with a solid knowledge of general culture, great ability to formulate and defend ideas as well as solid oral and written communication skills. Many social science and literature majors have acquired these competences, but they are sometimes unfamiliar with the corporate world. The new master’s in humanities and management program will equip them with the essential knowledge of economics and management they currently lack, but need to be able to acquire a job in the corporate world. The challenge is to assist students with humanities majors to nd their path towards management. Paris-Dauphine is opening up to a new group of students, this shows the university’s ability to innovate and adapt. »
« The corporate world is made up equally of goods and relationships, passions and reason. Everyone is aware of this. But we have long forgotten this due to a need to produce goods reasonably. We now know that this isn’t sucient: the economy and ecology makes this evident daily. Providing literature majors with management training and recruiting them, is one of the crucial means on which rms can rely on to assist them in questioning and revisiting the sense of their practices. "Science without conscience, is mere ruin of the soul". »
« In the corporate environment, literature majors are not an advantage but a necessity. A company’s long term success depends on how well its business approaches complement each other. Complex business risks (quantiable and non-quantiable) make the uniformity of competences a danger. Literature majors have unique strengths: delicacy, which is complementary to a more cut and dry style of work. Their outstanding writing skills, understanding of nuances and knowledge of general culture, are all important for an innovative business. Humanities, political and social science create and justify values. I am delighted about the creation of this new top level program that provides literature majors with a solid background in Economics; a program resistant to the current trends and indispensable for the creation of rms. »

« A few weeks after I completed my PhD. in "Sémiologie et histoire des textes et documents" I was contacted by a prestigious market research company. They were looking for somebody who had the literary and analytical backgroung to work in qualitative market research. They also wanted a bilingual and bicultural researcher able to understand the cultural values of both France en English-speaking countries, and capable of writing reports in both French and English. I was well placed at the time but I found working in the private sector presented other challegnes I was not preparated for. A master in humanities and management would be perfect as it would help garduates combine their analytical training with a more realistic understanding of business world, and nd that enriching job! »
