Aphrodite is a 6 month old boxer/lab mix.
She is shy until she gets to know you, then
she is playful and affectionate. She loves
children, she is great with other dogs, and
she is kennel trained. She is mostly house
trained, but has not learned to let you know
she needs to go outside.
Thank you to the 4H Worthwhile Kids Club
for the thoughtful donations

Boxer Mix Puppies
2018 Membership Dinner
It was a tale of two extremes at the 2018
HSforBC Membership Dinner.
Animal advocate Denise Pierce commanded;
"Take your dog to work!"
When Denise designed her new office suites at
DK Pierce and Associates in Zionsville, she made
the floor plan dog friendly. The employees and
their dogs love it. This is just one of the rea-
sons her firm has made the "Best Places to
Work" list two years running.
Sharing another side of animal care, Boone
County Sheriff Deputy Hannah Fisher, the re-
cently appointed animal control officer for
Boone County, spoke of her commitment to com-
panion animal rescue and the enforcement of
soon to be enacted county animal care and con-
trol ordinances. Deputy Fisher shared statistics
for recent county animal calls that were heart-
breaking but at the same time hopeful.
HSforBC President Susan Austin gave an over-
view of our rescue efforts and updates on the
shelter facility. Members enjoyed an excellent
dinner buffet provided by LA Cafe in White-
stown.
Our members voiced their appreciation for the
volunteers and supporters. Their hard work and
effort helping lost, stray and endangered com-
panion animals in Boone County is showing posi-
tive results.
Devon Miller DVM
A celebration of life for Devon Miller will be
Saturday, June 9th, 10 am, at Myers Mortuary.
This will be a time to share our memories and
be thankful that Devon was there to help us
organize HSforBC in 2007.

had been surrendered to HSforBC with the rest of
his litter when they were only hours old. Woodstock
was not thriving on bottle feedings. They were
afraid he might not make it, so we decided to see if
Pandora would accept him. She accepted him imme-
diately, and he is now the ‘large and in charge’ kitten
of the group!
We kept Pandora on her kitten chow, along with
small servings of kitten wet food twice a day, and
she stayed happy and healthy on that. She was very
protective of her family and her space, and we had
to be careful that she didn’t catch sight of any of
our cats as we entered and left ‘her’ room. Defen-
sive mother cats are not to be trifled with!
We finally had to give the kittens the run of the
room, as any barricade high enough to keep them
contained would also keep Pandora from getting to
them. So, at the same time , we set up a small litter

At the end of March I received a message from our
Cat Lady, Dawn Walker, asking if we would be able
to foster a very pregnant cat, and take care of her
and the kittens until they could be vetted and
homes found for them.
I thought about it for 3 seconds before responding
with an enthusiastic ‘yes!!’ Because, well, KIT-
TENS!!, right??
Pandora had been picked up as a stray by VCA in
Zionsville. They had checked her out, started feed-
ing her and loving on her, while they got in touch
with HSforBC. She was about 7-8 months old (a
baby having babies!), but she looked healthy and
they didn’t expect any problems.
Pandora settled right in with us. She was going to
stay in my sewing room, where she could have a
quiet place without being disturbed by, or feeling
threatened by, our cats. She was a little sweet-
heart right from the start. Quiet, friendly, and she
purred a lot. She liked getting her treats and pets.
She had obviously been someone’s pet.
She is a beautiful, shiny, black cat! Whether she
had escaped from home, or was abandoned for some
reason, we just don’t know. But obviously, she had
never been spayed or chipped. Luckily, the end re-
sult was that she found her way into the system so
that she and her kittens could be taken care of!
Eleven days after we got her, she had her kittens!!
Two males – one almost completely black ‘manx’
(bobbed tail) that we called Argos, one with four
white socks, white whiskers, and white markings on
his chest and tummy that we called Aries; and one
female – extra fuzzy and all black, that we called
Athena.
Pandora was an excellent mother from the start.
She stayed with them, groomed them, fed them and
chirped at them. She didn’t mind at all when I would
reach in so that I could touch them, and make sure
all was well.
That same day, we had another little arrival, a week
old orange and cream boy named Woodstock, who

box for the kittens, with coconut litter, since
clumping/clay litters could be a big health hazard to
tiny kittens that, like human babies, want to try to
eat anything new!
We had to be very careful when we were in that
room. We watched our step and checked before sit-
ting down, or moving, or shifting any chairs. Kittens
get everywhere, and quickly too! They were now en-
joying playing with each other and the kitten toys
we brought them. They love attention.
Since we had been handling them gently, and talking
to them since the day after they were born, they
are now definitely house kitties!! They don’t know
any other way.
We were just at the beginning of the weaning proc-
ess when we got another surprise! Another aban-
doned baby that wasn’t doing well was brought over
to see if she could join Pandora’s family. She was
already starting to eat kitten food. After a few
hours of Pandora being unsure whether she really
wanted another kitten to take care of, she ac-
cepted Safari into the group. Safari is a sweet

grey polydactyl.
This little family is almost ready for the first
shots, to be followed by being fixed. Soon, the
kittens will be ready to go to their forever
homes.
I’ll really miss them all! Pandora, Woodstock, Ar-
ies, Athena, Argos, and Safari are all special and
deserve a wonderful, safe, loving home.
Kittens are adorable. But it is only for a short
time that they are little balls of fluff. Soon
they become young cats, and then grown cats,
and will be for the rest of their lives. Cats can
live 20+ years. So, keep this in mind when you
are cooing over tiny, beautiful kittens, and de-
ciding if you should have one.
This is a lifetime decision for you and for kitty.
They want to have a forever home, and to be
part of your family.
Please be sure that you can love and care for
them for their lifetime, not just their childhood.

Lady Bella
has spent a lot of her life in the shelter.
She has been adopted into good homes but
sadly, she has yet to find a permanent loving
home. Because of this, she has developed
trust issues. She loves to cuddle with people
and eat treats. She is good on the leash.
A Happy Ending
On May 11th a good citizen with a keen eye spot-
ted a baby kitten on the side of SR 32 west of
Lebanon. She stopped and retrieved the furry lit-
tle baby. The kitten’s eyes were sealed shut with
pus and he was crying. The citizen reached out to
HSforBC on our Facebook page asking for help.
The kitten wound up in our care and was named
Ferris Buehler.
On May 15th after 4 days of around-the-clock
foster care his weight was up to 13oz, he had
more energy, and his eyes were clearing.
As of May 30th HER weight is up to 1.5 pounds
and SHE already has potential adopters waiting
for HER. It turns out the kitten is female and
has been renamed Marilyn Monroe.
Marilyn Monroe is thriving because a very caring
individual stopped to help her; and more caring
people have stepped up to get her care!

Marley She is a sweet senior girl that likes
to be near her people. She does not
like change and can be fearful in
the car. She currently lives with
dogs in her foster home, but pre-
fers they don’t bother her. She
needs a nice, quiet home.
Moose
is a loving,
sweet, friendly
boy with a big
personality. He
is about a year
old, and was
found as a won-
dering stray,
hoping someone
would bring him
in. Pandy
This sweet boy is almost a year old and very
entertaining! He loves cuddling and climbing!
He's great with other cats and gets along
with dogs .
Ronnie
He is a lovable 4-5
year old male mix.
He is a great com-
panion, house bro-
ken, kennel trained,
and not a barker.
He enjoys walks and
the company of
other dogs and kids.
Diamond
is a sweet senior
who would pre-
fer to be an only
dog or maybe
with another
senior. She was
aggressive with
a small dog, so
she should not
live in a home
with one.
