HR Planning Activity

◦Your group has been hired to act as the GMs of the Toronto Maple Leafs

◦Your first task is to assess the talent you have currently on the team and make forecasts for who you will have over the next three years

Organization Chart If the team has one or more players in the penalty box, they have fewer

players on the ice and are in a weaker position. The objective

becomes defending the net to try to prevent the opposing team from

scoring. The defensive strength of the players on the ice contribute to

“killing” the penalty (preventing goals until the penalty is over.)

Minor League Players are signed to the team, are paid a salary and are

expected to improve their skills so that they can join the NHL team when they are ready

and needed.

A team is said to be on a power play when the opposing team has 1 or more players in

the penalty box. Since the opposing team has fewer

players on the ice, teams have a good chance to score goals

during power plays. The offensive strength of the

players on the ice contribute to the team’s ability to score goals during power plays.

Note: Numbers in brackets refer to the number of players in that role.

Player Ability - “Job Performance”◦Players have been assigned scores to represent their offensive

ability (goal scoring ability) and their defensive ability (ability to stop the other team from scoring), as might be done in a performance appraisal

◦Growth rates:◦Some players improve their offensive ability (denoted by 5,0 on Team

Composition Worksheet)◦Some players improve their defensive ability (denoted by 0,5 on Team

Composition Worksheet)◦Some minor league players have real superstar potential, and can improve

by 10 points◦Some players have reached their prime and are unlikely to improve any more

(denoted by 0,0 on the Team Composition Worksheet)

“External Hires”

◦You can only draft one player in the first year◦Will it be a forward, a defensemen, or a goalie?

◦You can also only sign one free agent in the second and third years

Staffing Table

◦Note upcoming retirements (from the Team Composition Worksheet)

◦Fill in the number of anticipated vacancies for each position for 2016 and 2017

Replacement Chart◦Planning replacements for key positions◦For the power play unit, the offensive strength of a player is most

important◦For the penalty kill unit, the defensive strength of a player is most

important◦Fill in their Off and Def scores, and then make a judgment about

whether you think the player is ready (R), needs improvement (N) or is questionable (Q – may not ever be ready)◦This is a subjective decision your group will need to make

◦Note: this table should be filled in with the player’s current stats, not their projected performance level

◦You will complete a replacement chart for the end of the 2015 season and the end of the 2016 season

HR Planning Strategy

◦The team’s overall success will depend on:◦The offensive and defensive skill of all of the NHL roster

players ◦The team’s power play and penalty kill ratings

◦Your 2016 and 2017 teams will be judged based on these success criteria ◦ I will judge your team roster and who you put on your

power play and penalty killing teams ◦The team with the highest rating wins the Stanley Cup!

Assumptions & Rules

◦We’re assuming that there are no injuries

◦You can move a player from the NHL team to the minor league team if you wish.  Just change their “On NHL Team” field to N for the year(s) that apply.

◦You can demote players from special (e.g., power play unit) roles

Step by Step Instructions◦Step 1: Fill in the staffing table (using the Team Composition Worksheet)◦Step 2: Decide for 2015 which 3 forwards and which 2 defensemen are on the

power play unit (by placing a Y under the On PP column for the chosen players). Decide for 2015 which 2 forwards and which 2 defensemen are on the penalty kill unit (by placing a Y under the On PK column). Note that it is possible to have the same player on both the PP and PK units. Decide who is your starting goalie and who will be the back up.

◦Step 3: Decide who to draft in the first year, and place a Y by that player’s name under the Signed? column on the Team Composition sheet

◦Step 4: Fill in the replacement chart◦Step 5: Calculate the Off and Def scores for each player (forwards, defensemen

and goalies) for 2016 by adding each player’s growth rate to their 2015 Off and Def scores. (You do not need to do this for players who will be retired in 2016.)

◦Step 6: Decide who is on your team for 2016 (by placing a Y in column K for each chosen player). Make sure to only have 9 forwards, 6 defensemen and 2 goalies.

place a Y by that player’s name under the Signed? column on the Team Composition sheet◦ Step 9: Fill in the 2016 replacement chart◦ Step 10: Calculate the Off and Def scores for each player (forwards, defensemen and

goalies) for 2017 by adding each player’s growth rate to their 2016 Off and Def scores. (You do not need to do this for players who will be retired in 2017.)
