1 human nutrition  humans have a complete digestive tract, which begins with the mouth and ends with the anus, the major structures of human digestive tract are mouth, pharynx, oesophagus, stomach ,large intestine, small intestine, rectum and anus, the accessory organs include salivary glands, liver, gall bladder and pancreases.

why is digestion important?it is important because it converts large, often insoluble molecules into soluble molecules, capable of being absorbed into the blood or lymph capillaries associated with digestive tract and used for various metabolic processes.

digestive process

ingestion digestion ( chemical and mechanical) absorption assimilation excertion

mouthingestion-food is placed in the mouthteeth- incisors (cut or bite the food)          canines (used to tear meat)         molars and pre molars -grind the food fine

salivait is secreted by salivary glands (parotid gland, sublingual gland and sub maxillary gland)saliva mixes with food to form a bolus, it contain enzyme amylase , that breaks down the cooked starch into maltose.this is chemical digestion

tongue it mixes with saliva and pushes food between the teethit also makes swallowing easier.

oesophagusThe bolus is forced down the oesophagus when the muscular pharynx contracts, swallow process, peristalsis (contraction and relaxation of the antagonistic circular and longitudinal muscle of the oesophagus pushes the food downwards into the stomach through cardiac valve. No absorption takes place.

The epiglottis that covers the trachea prevents food from going into trachea when you swallow.
