    Verbal communication, and society:

    1. Language and Perception2. Language and Power3. Power and words

Language DiscriminationConsider why language discrimination is illegal; It's because since employers can't discriminate against someone because of theirnational origin, and we do the same thing when we react that way just becausesomeone's speech is different than our own.

    ---------------

Becareful not to have unethical behavior where we demean others. If you speak ina patronizing vocaltone, if you scream at the less powerful, or if you touch people inappropriately, you areengaging in unethical nonverbal communication. Similarly, if you respond to others' communication in a

way that misrepresents how you actually feel, you are being unethical. Thus if you laugh at a racist joke even though you dislike it, yourbehavior is unethical both because it derogates others, and because it misrepresentsyour true reaction to the joke.

Consider your nonverbal behaviors reflect your real attitudes, beliefs, and feelingsyour are using your nonverbl behavior to intimidate, coerce, or silence someone.

If you remember that you are just as responsible for your nonverbal communicationas ou are for your verbal communiication, you will make better, more ethical cho

    ices.
