16Hull and Structure Annual Surveys
General Cargo Ships
► Definitions:
Suspect areas are location showing substantial corrosion and/or areas are considered to be prone to rapid wastage,
Overall survey is a survey intended to report on the overall condition of the hull structure to determine the extent of close-up survey.
Close-Up survey is a survey where the details of structural components are within the close visual inspection range of the surveyor,

General Cargo Ships
► Definitions (continued):
Suspect areas identified at previous SSH are subject overall and close-up survey,
Close-up survey of the hatch cover and hatch coaming plating and stiffeners,
Overall and close-up survey of the cargo holds for the vessels over 10 years:
• For ships between 10-15 years: overall survey pf one fw’d and one aft cargo hold including tween deck spaces,
• Overall survey of all cargo holds and close-up survey of min. 25% of side shell frames,

General Cargo Ships
► Surveyor may extent scope of survey including UTM,
► If coating condition is good, extent of close-up survey may be considered,
► All piping and penetrations in cargo hold including overboard piping to examine,
Examination of ballast tanks when required is to be carried out, if necessary UTM can be requested
External examination of the air pipes, if necessary, internal examination may be required
19Hull and Structure Annual Surveys
General Cargo Ships
► Any damage such as wastage over allowable limits including buckling, detachment, fracture, which affect the vessel’s structural, watertight and weathertight integrity, is to be promptly and thoroughly repaired. Areas concerned:
Side shell frames, their end attachments and shell plating,
Deck plating and deck structure,
Bottom structure and bottom plating,
Watertight bulkheads,
Hatch covers and hatch coamings,
Innerbottom structure and plating,
Long’l bulkheads Oiltight bulkheads,
Weld connection between deck plating and air pipes,
Ventilators, including closing appliances, bunker and vent piping system.
► If repair facilities are not available, the vessel may be allowed to sail to next port where repair facilities available
