Design, to me, is mostly

about problem solving.

It is being presented a

challenge and coming up with

the most creative solution

that is both practical and

aesthetic. In order to

be a successful problem

solver, the skills and

knowledge required go beyond

just the basics. A great

designer is a Renaissance

Man. While no mortal can

be omnicient, I make it

my goal to be constantly

gaining new knowledge

through collaboration and

a willingness to learn. I

never promise to be perfect,

but always strive to reach

it.

Given the pre-existing

exterior and a water line

for plumbing, the challenge

of this project was to work

around the constraints

and still provide a space

that flowed well and

maximized the potential

of the exterior views. By

examining typical movements

of humans throughout the day

and contrasting it against

the sun’s motions, a floor

plan emerged that not only

blocked the least number of

pre-existing windows, but

also allowed the clients to

constantly stay in a space

that had the least amount of

sun glare, permitting them

to leave the drapes open and

look down to the magnificent

landscape below.

The site plan and

floor plans of the new

construction of the

community spaces and tenant

improvement of the living

spaces feature circular

paths from the interior to

the exterior, harmonizing

the designed spaces into one

continuous flow. This flow

pattern promotes interaction

with nature, as well as with

the activities within the

space. It also allows for

the wanderer to continue

through the several circular

9MEMORY CARE PROJECT - SPRING 2011

PHOENIX, ARIZONA

This memory care center for dementia patients is inspired

by changing lifestyles and brings something different and

unfamiliar by focusing on harmonizing eastern and western

designs. It symbolizes that change is not just something that

must be welcomed, but can also be enjoyed.

Wayfinding is one of the

most important issues in a

memory care center. This

issue was addressed through

visual cues - contrasting

borders on the floors and

colorful frames around the

doors. These colors are

unique to each activity area

and are introduced in a

subtle way.

Exterior materials are also

brought into the space.

These materials are kept in

their true form, allowing

its honesty to bring a more

welcoming touch to the

center. The custom laser cut

wooden panels is not just

a unifying element that is

seen in the entire facility,

but also brings out the

honesty of the background

material.

DELTA SKY CLUB,INCHEON, SOUTH KOREA

This modern sky lounge envelops the end user in an ethereal

dream-like space that defies gravity, questions perception,

and submerges users in an interesting yet peaceful world where

things aren’t necessarily as they seem. Achieved through the

unique use of line, scale, and light, this space derives its

inspiration from the inherent beauty found in music.

17MULTI-USE PROJECT - FALL 2011 / SPRING 2012

TEMPE, ARIZONA

DESIGN EXCELLENCE NOMINATION 2011/2012

TempeEx is not just a project that restores a once important

but now abandoned site in Tempe, but serves to capitalize on

the very essence of the city - its rich history. For 126 years

the Hayden Mill was a food processing center located in the

heart of Tempe that in many ways was responsible for the city’s

very existence. TempeEx aims to re-kindle the power of the

Hayden Mill by creating a virbrant attraction that looks back

to the past and aims to define a better future for the site,

its local caretakers, and outside visitors. As a site that is

located in Tempe, TempeEx is truly a development that is from

Tempe.

While each program within

the TempeEx site is unique,

they all have a common “ex”

that strengthens the culture

of Tempe. The memory garden

exposes the history of the

site with walls on historical

building footprints. The

restaurant allows guests to

experience the food-making

process. The bar excites

visitors with the revival of

a historical calaboose, but

with a new twist. Finally,

the famous Hayden grain

silos is exalted by a hotel

that provides guests with a

genuine experience of the

historical structure and

local milling processes.

21RESTAURANT PROJECT - SPRING 2010

THE WESTIN WESTMINSTER, WESTMINSTER, COLORADO

PROJECT SELECTED AS A FAVORITE BY CLIENT

Combining inspiration from photography and the national parks,

the design’s purpose is to create a space that will be enjoyed

by everyone at the restaurant. Digital elements combined with

luxurious materials give the restaurant a modern feel that is

driven by functionality. The restaurant is a preserve of all

that is good in life - magestic views, laughing with friends

and family, and, of course, food, with high hopes of continuing

the enjoyment for generations to come.

This project pushed design

limits by tackling more

than just the normal

issues of aesthetics and

functionality. For a

profit-driven restaurant,

profitablity became a huge

driving factor. Research

showed that most people,

when eating at a restaurant,

preferred booth seating or a

table close to a wall, and

usually chose not to sit at

a table in the middle of

an open space. In order to

maximize the profitability

of the square footage,

the most number of tables

were provided that mostly

consisted of booth seating

or table seating near a

wall.

25HOTEL PROJECT - SUMMER 2011

SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA

Drawing inspiration from the sea, the proposed designs for the

Manchester Grand Hyatt pay tribute to the rich yacht culture

of San Diego and transform it in a modern way, with additional

inspiration from the clean lines in high end fashion design.

Three concepts submitted to the client all support this idea.

First is the yacht-inspired guest room that is most directly

related to the general concept. The second takes its shapes

and forms from the Coronado Bridge, a yachting landmark of San

Diego. FInally, the third submitted concept is drawn from the

beachy pier, where multiple activities related to the sea take

place.

As an intern at WATG, I participated in the concept

and schematic design phases of all the guestrooms and

guestroom corridors, as well as the design development

phases of the standard guestrooms and guestroom corridors.

My responsibilities for this project included designing

presentations, rendering drawings, picking out materials and

furnishings, and connecting with vendors.
