Henry V Synopsis of Scenes

Director’s Notes I was thrilled to be able to direct this play, as I find Shakespeare’s works to be so rich for the director, the actor and the audience. The more we work with them before the curtain goes up, the more we find to share with you. In presenting these works today, we are often tempted to try to tie them too directly to current events. I think this is a mistake. The better approach is to let the work speak to you on its terms, not yours, and you’ll find that ideas from four hundred years will resonate with whatever is going on today. In the whole process of working on this play, from working on the script down to the performance you attend today, it has spoken to me in many ways. I wish the same for you. Kirk Gardner

Biographies Cast

Johnny Berriochoa (Constable of France; Williams, a soldier in King Henry's army), a Reno native, is completing a Bachelor's Degree in theater at UNR. He previously played the Prince of Morocco in Shakespeare's Merchant of Venice. He feels blessed to be working with the very experienced cast of Henry V.

Julie Douglass (Montjoy, a French herald; Alice, a lady attending on Katherine) is pleased to be in her third Shakespeare play, having been in last season's Henry IV and in A Midsummer Night's Dream (many!) years ago. She is also pleased to be using the French that she majored in in college—finally putting it to use!

Jenifer Crenshaw (Boy; Katherine, daughter to Charles and Isabel) most recently appeared in Nevada Rep’s productions of Footloose and Quick Change Room. She also appeared as the Stepdaughter in Six Characters in Search of an Author and Portia in The Merchant of Venice. Previously, in Dallas, Jen did shows like Much Ado About Nothing, Dracula, and the musical Cowboys. At the Murrieta Repertory Theatre in California, she worked as set designer, costume assistant, and performer in shows such as Anything Goes; How I Learned to Drive; Come Back to the Five and Dime Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean; Fiddler on the Roof; The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, and many more. This is Jen's first production with Reno Little Theater and she couldn't be more excited about it.

Dale Fast (Archbishop of Canterbury; Charles the Sixth, King of France) has been performing Shakespeare since age twelve, when he appeared as Puck in A Midsummer Night's Dream. Educated at Cal-State Fullerton and the UCLA Film School, he is currently a student at UNR. Dale has recently appeared in Best Little Whorehouse in Texas and Man of La Mancha at Riverfront Theater, Eye to Eye at TMCC, Merchant of Venice at Nevada Rep, and the title role in Julius Caesar at the Nevada Shakespeare Company.

Kris Hightower (Earl of Cambridge; Fluellen, an officer in King Henry’s army) studied Shakespeare at Cambridge and Oxford before coming to UNR, spending much of his free time in the Stratford Hostel watching Royal Shakespeare Company productions at night. He is excited about this production...verily.

Terri Gray (Hostess of the Boar's Head Tavern; Isabel, Queen of France) is thrilled to be back on stage (and performing Shakespeare!) after earning a Master’s Degree. Her last appearance was as Kate in Dancing at Lughnasa for Nevada Rep. With an acting resumé spanning almost twenty years, her favorite roles have been Linda Loman in Death of a Salesman, Mother Superior in Nunsense and Nunsense II, Lenny in Crimes of the Heart, and Alexandra in On the Verge. The last three roles were Reno Little Theater productions. Terri teaches fourth grade, is married, and has a teenage daughter.

Bob Gabrielli (Duke of Exeter, uncle to King Henry; Bates, another soldier in King Henry's army) acted at Reno Little Theater in the 1980s, in shows ranging from Barefoot in the Park to The Little Foxes to Elephant Man. His directing credits included Play It Again, Sam, A Christmas Carol, and Alone Together. When not raising funds for Washoe Medical Center, Bob enjoys a home life with his wife, Cathy, and daughter, Theresa, and finishing in the money in the Reno Hairball Fantasy Baseball League.

Scott Reeves (Lord Scroop; Lewis, the Dauphin) was raised in Reno, where he attended Galena High School. After graduation, he became a NASCAR driver in Tennessee. After a serious injury in the Indy 500 permanently ended his driving career, he returned to his home town. His first Shakespearean play was Julius Caesar, in which he played the part of Lepidarus.

Michael Peters (Bishop of Ely; Pistol; also Assistant Director) received his schooling in the "disciplines of the wars" in the eastern Mediterranean during the first Gulf War—a sentinel on a sandy beach on the isle of Crete, tough duty befitting "Pistol’s" boldness. Now in his tenth season with RLT, Michael was last seen as Justice Shallow in Henry IV. When not trolling for theatrical roles, he can be found in UNR’s Graduate School maintaining student records.

Steve Lombardo (Bardolph; Sir Thomas Erpingham; Duke of Burgandy) is a retired teacher who worked many years in Washington, D.C. He moved to Reno several years ago, and has been taking language courses at UNR. He has had a lifelong interest in the theater, movies, and television, and so he is also studying acting at UNR. Steve was last seen in Doug Mishler's Triggerfish Twist at UNR. Steve "has the bug," as the saying goes. May God have mercy on him.

Joshua Jessup (King Henry the Fifth) is grateful to Reno Little Theater for allowing him to continue the role he started in Henry IV last year. Since that time he has played Lancelot in Camelot, Bassanio in The Merchant of Venice, and Mark Antony in Julius Caesar. His other Shakespearean roles include Oberon in A Midsummer Night's Dream, Aegon in Comedy of Errors, and Jaques in As You Like It.

Kirk Gardner (also Earl of Westmerland; Governor of Harfleur) continues his Shakespearean period that began with last season's Henry IV, continued in Nevada Shakespeare Company's Julius Caesar, and now finds him "once more unto the breach" with Henry V. When not reciting iambic pentameter, Kirk is a CPA with Kafoury, Armstrong & Co.

Director

Kathleen Sharkey-Brockmeier (Sir Thomas Grey; Gower, another officer in King Henry’s army; French Soldier) appeared in Reno Little Theater's productions of Nunsense I, Nunsense II, Dracula and Taming of the Shrew. She was also in Brüka's The Hobbit and Gothic North's Sisters Rosensweig and Nobody Knows I'm a Dog. Most recently, she was in Cindy Davis' scene adaptation of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, mmm Turkish Delight. She would like to say, however, “Thank you for the warm welcome.” She is glad to be home.

Dale Royer (Nym; Duke of Orléans) moved to Reno eighteen months ago. He is working as a Software Engineer doing research and development at Arrow Electronics. He is happy to be involved in Henry V.

The Story Thus Far…

Henry V is considered to be one of a connected cycle of plays (with Richard II and the two parts of Henry IV). Scholars believe Shakespeare wrote them in that order, and the audiences of the Globe Theater first saw them presented that way, one season after another.

Nevertheless, Henry V is often presented alone. In fact, it has been made into two critically and commercially successful films. This proves that an audience doesn’t need to know what has gone before to enjoy the play. While we certainly hope our presentation will stand on its own as well, you might be interested in Shakespeare’s version of the history of these times.

There has always been a rivalry between England and France, but the royal houses of the two countries in the 14th Century were actually descended from the same line, and family claims are at the heart of the politics of all these plays.

For example, the English King Edward III felt his lineage was stronger than that of the French ruler, and in 1337 declared himself “King of France and England.” His son Edward, known as the Black Prince, led a successful invasion of France.

Unfortunately, Edward the Black Prince grew ill, retired from France, and died before his father. That left France for the French, and the English crown itself up for grabs.

On the death of Edward III, the crown descended to Richard II, son of the Black Prince. Richard was not as strong a leader as his forbears, and there were legitimate claims to be made by others in the family, including Richard’s cousin, Henry Bolingbroke.

To settle a dispute, Richard exiled Henry from England for ten years. This did not sit well with Henry and others, and Henry returned to England, gathered supporters, and deposed Richard. Richard surrendered the crown to Henry, who promptly imprisoned Richard. Richard died in prison, possibly under orders from Henry IV.

The suspicious nature of Richard’s death and Henry’s failure to give his supporters the power they thought they deserved left his reign open to dissent as well. While trying to maintain his throne against challengers, Henry was disappointed to find his own son to be less than a stellar candidate as a successor.

Prince Henry, known as Hal, shunned the court to devote himself to low pursuits among the taverns of London. There, he spent his time with the drunken old knight, Sir John Falstaff, and his companions, Pistol and Bardolph.

But Hal’s time among the lower orders of society served two purposes. It gave him an understanding of those people, teaching him how to lead them, and it distanced him from the intrigues of his father. When Henry IV died, Hal accepted his position as Henry V, cast aside Falstaff, and prepared to rule.

As Henry V opens, the young King must decide whether to follow his father’s advice to “busy giddy minds with foreign quarrels” by making his own claim to France (through the same line as Edward III). But the taint of Richard’s death, the civil strife of his father’s rule, and his own wilder days color everything he does.

He now faces the challenge of proving he is a King to his nobles, his common soldiers, the French, and even, perhaps, to himself.

The Reno Little Theater 2004—2005 Season

(Reno Little Theater’s 70th season) continues with

The Ride Down Mt. Morgan By Arthur Miller, Directed by Doug Mishler

From America's greatest modern playwright (Death of a Salesman, All My Sons) comes a story of passion and betrayal. Lyman Felt has always balanced his ideals against his desires. The charismatic Lyman has it all: a thriving business, fame as a poet, children who adore him—and now two women claiming to be his wife. Lyman's world unravels as a car crash releases a whirlwind of hard truths, tawdry secrets, and painful memories into which all around him are drawn. His life disintegrates as we explore the fundamental question of whether a man can be faithful to anyone but himself.
