Doosan Infracore ConstructionEquipment has launched the newDA40 articulated dump truck(ADT), the first in a new family ofDoosan ADTs offering increasedengine power and torque, higherpayloads, lower fuel consumption, enhanced operator comfort andfaster travel speeds.

Incorporating over 40 years of expertise inthe ADT market and using qualitycomponents from world-class suppliers suchas Scania, ZF, NAF, Parker and Rexroth, thenew Doosan ADTs are optimised forextreme off-road performance. Theexceptionally flexible and agileundercarriage, which is designed to ensurethat all 6 wheels are in permanent contactwith the ground, means that Doosan trucks

can operate on very rough and soft terrain on construction sitessuch as road projects and mass excavation hauling as well as inmining and quarrying applications.

The new articulated dump trucks complement Doosan's widerange of excavators and wheel loaders, allowing Doosan tooffer a one-stop solution for equipment to excavate, load andtransport all types of materials. All Doosan ADT and heavyequipment products are supported by flexible financingpackages from Doosan Financial solutions, offering 'tailor-made'solutions for purchasing Doosan products.

Like all Doosan heavy equipment, the new range of ADTs issupported by a regional sales and service operation withstrategically located parts depots to service a worldwidenetwork of Doosan dealers. All the depots have fully trainedDoosan service and parts specialists to support our dealers andto ensure the customer experiences maximum uptime from theirmachine.

The new DA40: Power, Performance, Productivity and FuelEfficiency

Powered by the 6-cylinder Scania DC13 Stage IIIB compliantdiesel engine with a gross power output of 368 kW (500 HP) at2100 rpm, the new DA40 offers a 10% increase in enginepower compared to the previous MT41 model. With a 22%increase in gross torque to 2373 Nm (1750 lb ft) at 1300 rpm,the torque available in the DA40 is 'best in class' in the ADTmarket.

The increased engine power is combined with SCR technologyto lower fuel consumption. Also contributing to the overall 8%reduction in fuel consumption* is the new ZF transmissionoffering 8 forward and 4 reverse speeds. The new transmissionimproves the transfer of power from the engine to the wheels for

outstanding traction. To withstand theincreased power, the drivelinedimensions and cooling capacity ofthe truck have been increased.

The DA40 combines 'best-in-class' fuelconsumption with a higher top speedof 58 km/h (36 mph). The DA40 alsohas an increased body capacity of24.4 m3, and the payload has beenboosted to 40 metric tonne withouttailgate, an increase of more than15% over the payload of the MT41.The higher speeds and payloads willallow the customer to increase profitsfrom their mining, quarrying orearthmoving operations.

6-wheel traction and outstandingrough and soft terrain capabilities

The DA40 has permanent 6-wheeldrive for equal power distributionwhile the free-swinging rear tandembogie and the special articulationsystem offer excellent drivingperformance in difficult terrain. Thesloping body design enhances thestability of the truck thanks to its lowcentre of gravity and allows fast andeasy tipping, even in the mostdemanding conditions.

The combination of the unique tandembogie and the sloping rear frame

results in 'best in class' rough and soft terrain capabilities andavoids the need for electronic aids such as traction control.

To handle the increased payload as well as provide a smootherride for the operator, the DA40 has a completely new hydro-gasfront suspension. This independent front suspension (there is norigid axle) is a unique feature of the Doosan ADT which allowsfor free movement on one side, without movement on theopposite side, providing maximum ground contact and shockabsorption.

The articulation hinge is positioned behind the turning ring toprovide equal weight distribution even during maximum turningand ensure maximum contact between the front wheels and theground for optimum traction.

Thanks to the high engine power and torque, the improvedground clearance and the efficient powertrain, the DA40delivers 'best-in-class' rim pull in extreme hauling conditions. Likeall Doosan ADTs, the DA40 features a powerful engine brakeand hydraulic transmission retarder as standard. The wet brakesoffer a long service life and sealed protection from theenvironment and, with oil-cooled multiple disc brakes on all thewheels, the safety of the operator is never compromised.

Operator comfort and convenience

The DA40 has a completely new cab providing more space andimproved visibility for the operator, 'best in class' noise levels anda fully automatic climate control system. For easier operation,Doosan has introduced new electronic systems and simplifiedfingertip controls with a digital display of all desired machinefunctions.

The fully automatic 8 gear transmission and smooth Tiptronicgear-shifting (both automatic and manual gear functions areavailable) allow the operator to concentrate on workingconditions.

For routine maintenance and service, the cab can be tiltedbackwards to provide easy access to components. Easier serviceaccess and longer service intervals result in lower operatingcosts. A fully automatic central greasing system and rear viewcamera are standard.

Just 10 PSI of water pressure is required from the supply hose whenusing the integrated booster pump, giving the DB-M an output as highas 24 GPM at 200 PSI. An in-line 30 mesh filter stops any solids 600microns and larger, and the manufacturer recommends that it be used atall times. If using potable water, nozzles can be inspected just once ayear.

Configured for U.S. markets for 3-phase / 480 volt / 60 hertz power, the full current load is approximately 12 amps. It can be configured tomatch power supplies in virtually an region in the world. Therecommended minimum generator set is 25 KW. Supplied “barewired” with a 100-foot (30.48 meter) 10/4 electrical cord, it can beordered with any plug for a modest extra cost.

The DB-M can also be supplied with an optional dosing pump forprecise metering of odor control additives, surfactants to improvebinding to dust particles, or tackifying agents to help seal ground-leveldust and prevent it from becoming airborne.

A global leader in dust suppressiontechnology has announced theintroduction of a new low-turbulencedesign for applications in which afan-driven mist would beundesirable. Developed in responseto extensive customer input, theDustBoss® DB-M is well suited tooperating conditions involving veryfine dust particles, such as slag dustor fly ash. The unit generates anumbrella-shaped cloud of atomizeddroplets averaging 50-200 micronsin size, projecting the mist about 30feet (9.14 meters) on a calm day.

The powerful misting head is suppliedstandard with 9 atomizing nozzles andmounted on a 15-foot boom, but thedesign was engineered for its ability tobe customized for specific dust types, particle behaviors or operatingenvironments. “There are a number ofapplications where a fan-driven dustsuppressor would introduce too muchair movement,” explained Dust ControlTechnology CEO Edwin Peterson. “Insome cases, that could actually causeground-level dust to become airborne.”

For those types of environments,Peterson says the DB-M is a practicaland extremely versatile solution. “Weengineered this unit with the flexibility toaccommodate a wide range ofconditions,” he continued. “We canadjust droplet size to match specificparticle sizes or characteristics, and itcan be fabricated on a boomanywhere from 4-15 feet in length. Itcomes with a durable skid mount foreasy portability, and the movable headallows users to fine-tune the mistdirection,” he added.

The new design features selectable flowsettings and the company's proprietaryVariable Particle Sizing (VPS)Technology to improve captureefficiency. Nozzles can be added, removed or re-sized as the applicationdictates. www.hub-4.com/directory/11299

Cleanfixincreasesefficiency atBristol Port; oneof the mostadvanced bulkhandlingterminals inEuropeSince its privatisation in 1991 over£450m has been invested in The BristolPort Company making it one of theworld's most productive and technicallyadvanced ports. The most significantinvestment in Bristol Port culminated inMay 1993 with the opening of TheBristol Bulk Handling Terminal, a £120mjoint venture between the port andNational Power plc (now RWE npower).

The sophisticated, multi-user terminalhandles a wide range of bulk products, including grain, animal feeds, fertilisersand aggregates, as well as allspecifications of coal and petroleumcoke. The terminal has the capacity toreceive up to 10 m tonnes a year of coaland other bulk commodities.

One of the many bulk imports is animalfeeds which are discharged by two Konegrab cranes, positioned on the dock side, assisted by smaller 12 tonne KomatsuPC138 excavators working within the hullof a vessel, ensuring the entire load isfully dispatched.

Working with dry produce in theseenclosed conditions can createexceptionally high dust levels. This canquickly clog up the excavators coolingpack which causes major performanceissues such as overheating and increasedfuel consumption as well as becoming afire risk within the hull of the vessel.

"Working with grain derivatives such asthe animal feeds can be dusty andmachines need to be cleaned regularlyto ensure maximum safety andperformance," advised Paul Osborne,Development Engineer at The BristolPort Company. "We currently pull the

machines out of the hull to clean out theradiators and engine areas while themachines cool down."

Two years ago Paul had Lynx Engineering ofLong Buckby retro-fit Cleanfix reversible fansto his 12 tonne units to help eliminate theoverheating problem.

The Cleanfix fan can be retro fitted toalmost any machine with eitherengine or hydraulically drivencooling fans to eliminate problemareas associated with overheatingdue to blocked coolers. Lynxcurrently fit the Cleanfix fan to awide range of agricultural, forestry, construction and wasterecycling equipment, with somemachines already available withthe system straight out of thefactory.

The patented Cleanfix reversible fanblade design will purge debris fromheat exchangers and air intakescreens at the touch of a button or atprogrammable intervals, meaning theoperator does not have to shut downthe machine, exit the cab or mostimportantly, stop working.

With the Cleanfix reversible fan, the fanblades rotate on their axis whilst the fancontinues to rotate at full engine speed. Thisallows the fan to provide maximum coolingand cleaning airflow without stopping the fan, boosting productivity and performance whilstextending the life of the engine and hydrauliccomponents.

Having Cleanfix fans fitted keeps the enginesrunning cooler, as the dust and debris is regularlyblown from the radiators. This means that theexcavators can stay working in the hull for longer.Paul explains, "Before, we had to lift the units outof the hull prior to them using a full tank of fuel butnow they can run until the fuel tanks are empty, significantly reducing down time."

Recently Lynx Engineering upgraded one of the systemsto a new lightweight prototype unit, reported to bedelivering the same results as the initial unit. The new lighterunit has been designed using lightweight materials to allowCleanfix fans to be fitted to smaller compact machines where theweight of a heavy fan could cause problems.

Paul procures for the whole port and commented that this is possibly one ofthe smallest items he has purchased, but 'it's the little things that make areal difference'. www.hub-4.com/directory/14477

Finning UK has secured the sale of 10Caterpillar® excavators, includingseven Cat 312DL tracked excavatorsand three Cat 308D SBRT hydraulicexcavators, to Scotland based, groundwork's and civil engineeringspecialists, Advance Construction.

The deal represents the first major fleetpurchase of Caterpillar equipment byAdvance Construction. Following a highlycompetitive tender process, that pitted theCaterpillar machines capabilities andoverall running costs against rival products,Advance Construction opted for aCaterpillar fleet combination.

Commenting on the deal, AdvanceConstruction plant manager, GarethMollan said: “At Advance Construction wehave both a contracting and hire business, with a dedicated sister company that hiresplant and equipment to customers acrossthe region, as well as providing plant forour contracts.”

“We therefore looked at the purchase ofthe new fleet with three things in mind. The first was cost of ownership and thesecond was the capability of theequipment. Finally we wanted plant thatwould be reliable and support that waslocal to where the plant may be hired. The Finning engineering support andbranch locations therefore played animportant part within the selectionprocess. There is no point in having apiece of equipment that is stuck on a sitewaiting for a part or service, this iscrippling for a plant hire and contractingbusiness.”

“The units themselves are perfectlymatched to our client and customergroups needs and from an operatorpoint of view, they are simple to controland comfortable. This is particularlyimportant as in Scotland operators canbe working in very harsh conditions.”

Advance Constructionopted for a combinationof wheeled and trackedexcavators, due tochanging customerdemand for units thatwork both on the roadand within green fieldoperations.

The sale of theCaterpillar excavatorswas managed by Finningkey account manager,Alistair Murdoch.Commenting on the deal,he said: “We were in apricing battle with twoother suppliers on thisdeal, so it was very

rewarding to win the business. Without a doubt this success came downto the strong combination of Caterpillar equipment's quality andperformance and Finning's ability to service and support the customersneeds.”

“We are looking forward to continuing to work with AdvanceConstruction in the future and advising them on the options thatCaterpillar and Finning can offer to improve business operations andcosts.”

The Cat 312DL machines are powered by engines with ACERT™technology to optimise performance and meet emission standards. To reducefuel costs, the engines run at lower speeds for better fuel efficiency andreduced wear while an economy mode is also available.

The Cat 308D SB RT machines are small enough to be very manoeuvrableand can get to places larger hydraulic excavators can't. This gives themachines the versatility to be used on almost any sized job or applicationwhere a hydraulic excavator is required, making them great all roundmachines.

As one of the UK's leading specialistdemolition companies workingthroughout the UK, Coleman &Company strives to stay one-stepahead when it comes to safety, productivity and industry bestpractice. And collaborative working with machinerymanufacturers has enabled the company todevelop its own unique capabilities - justlike those it has recently unleashed using apair of Volvo ECR305C short radiusexcavators to simplify the demolition ofcomplex structures.

“The ECR305C's have proved mucheasier to use in jobs where we wouldnormally have used the larger EC360Cmodel,” says managing director MarkColeman. “In demolition specification, with cab guards and body protection, our ECR305C models are unbelievablystable.”Previously, Mark Coleman says it was hardto determine a suitable role for such alarge, short radius machine, but adds thattheir role in the recent deconstruction ofgas holders, where space has proved tobe a luxury, has been invaluable.

“We were able to use a crane andlower the ECR's into site - in anenvironment where a larger EC360Csimply wouldn't fit,” he says. “And withsuch a high power to weight ratio, wehave been able to use the EC360'sattachments on this short radius machineto take full advantage of its much smallerfootprint.”Dismantling the circular gas holders fromthe inside, Coleman & Company was ableto position the ECR305 with its rearagainst the circumference of the structure, while safely reaching across to theopposite side to maximise the efficiency ofthe demolition process.

The result has been high productivity andimmense stability, which has exceededMark Coleman's expectations consideringthe compact dimensions of the excavators.

“Because the ECR305C's can handlethe same attachments as our EC360s,we can maintain our efficiency usingmuch smaller, more manoeuvrable kit,”he says. “It's very impressive and fitsneatly with our philosophy of being aspecialist demolition contractor thatprovides innovative solutions for ourclients.”

Aggregate Industries has been usinga Gotland BagVAC for several years, exploiting its dust removingcapabilities to minimise manualhandling issues and dust exposurerisks at its Bardon Hill asphalt plantat Coalville, Leicestershire.

Bardon Asphalt, part of AggregateIndustries UK Limited, is one of the leadingasphalt suppliers in the United Kingdom, and supplies a full range of both Britishand European Standard products andproprietary products for the transport andconstruction industry. Its asphalt plant atBardon Hill is one the largest in the UK,and was installed by Benninghoven, aleading name in asphalt plant design.

Benninghoven asphalt plant and theBagVAC systemA key feature of the Benninghoven-designed asphalt plant at Bardon Hillresulted from the decision to equip it witha centralised vacuum system, designedand supplied by Gotland, with inlet valvesaround each of the six levels of theasphalt plant for attaching a length offlexible suction hose. The suction power isthen supplied by a Gotland BagVAC, sothat all the dust and build up thatinevitably results from asphalt production issucked away into a large one tonne IBCcontainers. The beauty of the Gotland system lies in itsnumerous benefits, from minimising dustthrough its fully enclosed system fromnozzle to bag, and the avoidance ofmanual handling risks, along withimproving Bardon Asphalt's own H&S andgeneral housekeeping standards.

The asphalt plant manager'sperspectiveThe best person to describe the BagVACexperience is Jason Broughton, the asphaltplant manager at Bardon Hill: “TheBagVAC dust removal system is used forthe internal cleaning and dust removal ofour Benninghoven Asphalt plant. Thismeans working around and ups on sevenlevels internally, via the connectors wehave on all levels for sucking all the dustaway into the BagVAC system.”“Prior to commissioning and installing theBagVAC system, there was a seriousmanual handling issue. Bags were filled

and removed by hoist on level six - using internal stairways. As a directresult of this laborious and unpopular chore, the housekeeping of the plantinterior was left to become one of the last things anyone had or wanted todo.”

How much dust and how often is the BagVAC used?“We use it weekly to maintain housekeeping standards with the plantinternals.”

How easy is the BagVAC to use, and does it save time?“The BagVAC's very user-friendly, which is another good point, asintroducing new technology and equipment is always easier when theoperatives find it simple to use and can immediately see the benefits totheir working environment. It greatly reduces the time spent on the cleaningand housekeeping tasks compared to manual removal, based on volumesfound and spillages - as many as four levels of the asphalt plant can becompletely cleaned in a day.”

So how was the BagVAC for Bardon Asphalt?Jason's happy to have the last word on the BagVAC: “The BagVAC hasmade a big difference to achieving higher onsite environmental standardsand it has improved our general housekeeping standards.”

“All in all, the BagVAC system is an excellent piece of kit that haseffectively removed other critical issues like manual handling of bags withfiller fines. It has made housekeeping easy and enables us to maintain thehigh standards expected on site.”
