CONGRATULATIONS HUB CLUB WINNERS: REMEMBER, IF YOU DON’T ENTER, YOU CAN’T WIN!

Is that summer I see creeping slowly over the horizon? The days are getting longer, the sun brighter, and moods lighter.

It’s time to live in slops and shorts, tuck into watermelon by the pool, and wash sand out of uncomfortable areas…just kidding!

We’ve packed this edition of the Club Mag with the usual mix of fashion, articles, and recipes, but we’ve taken a trip back in time to the sixties! We revive both the colour and sophistication of the fashion, the simpler-time fun of the kids, and the chivalry of the men in a bid to draw inspiration for our modern world.

Besides that, we showcase the best poolside gear and accessories for guys, gals, and kids so that you’ll always look cool while you’re getting into a sweat. We pay tribute to a dearly beloved favourite of beach culture – the bikini! From sizzling styles to the correct fi t, this item always reminds us that dynamite comes in small packages.

Before I leave you to tuck in, our thanks and appreciation go to the Edward Hotel, {the thrift collection}, Ciao Bella and uShaka Marine World for photo shoot locations, set pieces and props. It wouldn’t look this good without you guys.

That’s all from me, so catch you by the pool!

Yours, Saraven Reddy

SWIMWEARBIKINI BASICS: Fitting TipsBelow are some general tips to fi nding a good swimsuit fi t in all areas of the body:

Torso: If you are going with a classic bikini style (bare midriff and back), the body section of a swimsuit is not really applicable. However, if you think you may be interested in a tankini, make sure the torso portion of your swimsuit lies perfectly fl at on the body. You will want a good, streamlined fi t with the right percentage of Lycra content. Still, be wary of too-tight tankini tops; they will tend to cause belly bulges in even the slimmest of women.

Leg and Waistbands: Make sure that the elastication of the leg and waistband of your bikini bottoms are not puckering or digging into your skin. Otherwise, the result is an uncomfortable and unfl attering fi t. If the bottoms are digging in anywhere, you will want to try a larger size or different style. If the bottoms are not offering enough coverage, a different style is the answer, not a different size. Also, remember to check your butt in the mirror to be sure the bottoms are offering enough coverage.

Straps: Bikini straps should lie comfortably on your shoulders without digging in or falling down. If the straps are digging in, you will probably want to choose a larger top size. If you are trying on a style with tie straps, move around a bit in the dressing room to make sure the straps stay tied.

Bust: When trying on a bikini top, lift your arms to make sure the top offers enough coverage and does not creep up on you. Make sure that you can adjust the straps so you will feel comfortable and secure in your bikini top. If you are looking at a bikini with a built-in underwire, follow the same rules as when shopping for a bra. The underwire should completely cover the bottom half of the breast and not be sitting on any breast tissue. Your breasts should fi ll the cups of your bikini top completely without spilling over.

Once you have your new bikini or tankini, try changing your style a bit with some fun and necessary swimwear accessories. Further on is a guide to shopping for and wearing two of the most common swimsuit accessories: the sarong and sunglasses.

{STRIPE bIKINI TOP 6995 }{STRIPE bIKINI bOTTOM 6995 }

8 THE HUB CLUB EDITION 14 2012

SWIMWEARSarong The sarong is a cover-up favourite among women all over the world. Sarong style looks great on women of all shapes and allows a little more coverage for shy bikini wearers. Its graceful beauty can lend any bikini or swimsuit an inherently feminine style (while serving the added benefi t of covering fi gure fl aws). Sarongs are very effective cover-ups for heavy hips, thighs, and legs. A sarong is also one of the most fl exible swimsuit accessories in its ability to transfer from beach cover-up to sexy mini-skirt or halter dress.

It is important to think about the shape of your face and the colour of the lenses when picking this shape of sunglasses. Its Audrey Hepburn/Jackie Onassis style provides a large surface of UV protection over the eye area ... and a whole lot of sexy.

The trick to wearing a sarong successfully is to get the right wrap. To tie a sarong, hold it horizontally around your hips. Gather approximately three inches of material in each hand and tie a simple square knot at your belly button. To adjust the placement of the sarong on your legs, fold the sarong to the desired length horizontally before tying it.

It’s all about comfort for summer with these open toe sandals with detailed stitching. The soles are cushioned for extra support. Wear with shorts or baggies. A must for the pool or beach.

{MEN’S SaNdalS fROM 14995 }

Can a man’s shoes give you all the insight you need? Some dating experts say so! His footwear has everything to do with his choices, which can set off little alarm bells or set your mind at ease. First, scope out what his shoes are made of, and what condition they’re in – are they shined to the max, flexible or prone to scuff? Their quality and texture can point to what you can expect of him in a relationship – for example, if he only owns soft suede shoes, this may show sensitivity. Next, their cleanliness – if his shoes are well taken care of, then it’s safe to assume that he takes care of his home and self. Now check out his downtime/playtime shoes – colourful or detailed footwear points out an extrovert, while the plainer the shoe, the more likely he is to be introverted.

A guy with expensive athletic shoes is likely to a) enjoy spending money, b) be sport or game-centric and c) like their own space. However, a guy with oversized athletic shoes is more comfortable in groups. A man in cowboy boots is into adventure and his own independence, so if you’re happy with him taking off on a cross-country trip, he’ll be happy to come back to you. Men in sandals are more likely to be led by their hearts than pure rationality, and love the outdoors. Beware the long-toed and flip-tipped loafers, often in out-there leather, and loafers without socks! These are player apparel all the way. So, the next time you need a hint as to what’s below the surface, look down!

Friends?Friends?Friends?Friends?Just

Can a guy and a girl ever really be “just friends”? This is one of those questions without an answer, because the truth will always change depending on the individual situation and people.

How to handle itIt all comes down to honesty. Not only with your friend, but more importantly with yourself. Ask yourself the tough questions about what you really want from someone, and be prepared to not like some of the answers. The next step is to be honest with your friend – whether you’re the one confessing further feelings beyond friendship, or the one dealing with a friend’s confession, there are a few essential rules. Firstly, be gentle. You hold someone’s heart in your hands, or you’re putting that friend in a position where they hold yours. Neither is comfortable or easy. Secondly, never string someone along. Be upfront and fi rm (but kind) with your decision. Once you say yes, there’s no going back – and you’ll break their heart if you try to. Once you say no, stick to it. Your curiosity or indecision is not their problem; so once you say no, don’t be trying to kiss them at a club two weeks later. Playing with their emotions is not allowed.

There’s no reason to not explore a connection with someone and have it develop into a friendship, whether it’s with someone of the same or opposite sex. Just remember that everyone isn’t always clear about his or her intentions – all you can do is be respectful enough to be clear about yours.

Sometimes, it’s just not possible –

feelings develop, attraction (and

maybe jealousy) gets in the way, or

one of you ends up wanting more while

the other doesn’t. These friendships

are platonic on the surface, but there’s

an undercurrent of sexual tension

or longing that inevitably has to fi nd

the light of day – whether or not the

friendship aspect of the relationship can

continue past that point has everything

to do with the people involved and how

they handle it, as well as the depth of

those ‘other’ feelings or desires. In some

cases, it may just be too painful for the

friend who’s into their friend to be so

close to the person – they have to see

them with other people, listen to their

love/lust stories, and have constant

interaction with someone that they

want but can’t have. Often, it may be

kinder to part ways and let your friend

move on.

The Rules of AttractionSometimes, none of these factors ever comes into play – you are buddies, and attraction never comes into it. You can talk about anything, discuss guys and girls you’re into, hang out in your pyjamas, and there just isn’t that element of desire. Contrary to what some people think, not all guys are primarily concerned with one thing, and can see girls as real people instead of potential conquests. There are a lot of these guys! There are probably more who have decided whether or not they “would” before they’ve even said “Hello, my

name is”, though. However, is it possible to stop yourself? Attraction is an instantaneous and subconscious thing – you know whether or not you fi nd someone attractive before they’ve opened their mouths, and that’s just a fact, male or female. Girls can be just as predatory as men, and aren’t immune to having a desire for someone that clouds their judgement or gets in the way. So, is it wiser to just not form friendships with people whom you’re attracted to? To keep your distance and save yourself the drama if you can see it coming? That’s up to you.

Some say that chivalry is dead. Well, over our dead bodies! Guys, a little bit of chivalry will go a long way when

making your date or girlfriend feel special, safe, and taken care of – but there is a balance to strive for. Modern women don’t like traditional chivalry because we like equality. You don’t have to hold doors open for us or ask our father’s permission to marry us, and you better never ever order for us in a restaurant or rsvp to an event without asking if we have something on. Our decisions are our own and we are more than

capable of sorting ourselves out. However, modern chivalry

doesn’t forego equality or respect. It’s about applying that little bit of old-fashioned treatment that makes a ‘chick’ feel like a lady – or at least feel like you see her as a lady. We’re talking about offering your jacket if we caught out in the cold, and letting us walk up the escalator before you. Modern chivalry is picking us up, dropping us off, or making sure that we get home. If we haven’t invited you inside, it’s waiting until we’re safely indoors before driving away. It’s having your role as protector in mind,

by walking on the street side of the pavement or taking the chair facing the rest of the room so that you can keep an eye out for trouble.

Besides your role of protector, it’s about your lady’s role as the apple of your eye, someone that’s important to you. It ‘s always introducing her to people you run into, so that she feels special instead of awkward. It’s dishing up her food or pouring her drink before you do your own. Essentially, modern chivalry is about consideration – and if you give it, you’ll get it back a hundred fold.

BOYISH SHAPEBy highlighting the bust and fl owing over the body, the baby-doll generates movement and a softer look while creating the illusion of curves and fullness. FULL-FIGURED WOMENThe more voluptuous amongst us look gorgeous in baby-doll dresses as they create a smooth silhouette, draping over imperfections and fuller areas that could make you feel uncomfortable in fi tted clothes. The cut draws attention away from these areas and focuses on your feminine assets and curves. Some baby-doll dresses are also made with built-in support or cups, allowing for bigger breasted women to still wear thin spaghetti straps.

LONG LEGSMost baby-doll dresses are around knee-length or shorter, which means that they’re great for both showing off long legs and making shorter legs appear longer, especially when paired with heels or wedges - but those with shorter legs can still wear them well when paired with high heels or platforms.

hisWhat to wear:

James Bond is the ultimate unattainable man, expert at acquiring beautiful women. He is charming, sexy, and irresistible, but always keeps a part of himself only to himself. This drives women crazy, because they all want to be the one to “decode” him and save him from himself. Part of James Bond’s appeal stems from his well-groomed, debonair look.

how to get the bond look

Not everyone can look like James Bond, but everyone can dress like him. Part of his appeal stems from his dapper look of sophistication. He wears clothes that complement his physique, has neat hair perfectly coiffed (but not too overdone), and doesn’t wear too much jewellery.

Personal hygiene and grooming are of utmost importance. Comb-overs do not, have not, and will never appeal to women. Protruding nose hairs are also a big no-no. Shave the whiskers on your face. Keep it clean with a nice aftershave. Keep your shoes shined. Be confi dent in your manner and bearing, walking with purpose and posture and moving with grace – dance lessons can get you there.

Your luggage needs to look as good as you do. Hard cases are both sturdy and stylish, and we have a selection of three sizes that all fi t into each other. Keep the duration and locations of your trip in mind when deciding how many cases of what size you should take along.

A globetrotting man of the world like 007 is always staying in hotels, and his choice of luggage plays an important part in the mission.

A femme fatale is a “deadly woman”, which means that while she is alluring, glamorous, sophisticated, and entrancing, she is also

dangerous. She’s cunning, manipulative, always has an ace up her sleeve that you never saw coming, and achieves her goals through her feminine wiles. Think Catwoman, Mata Hari, and Sharon Stone in Basic Instinct.

Create a femme fatale alter ego! Walk into a room with her in mind and let her mysterious allure work through you. Let your unusual interests and skills, education and opinions create your undeniable and self-assured sex appeal.

Highlight your full-on femininity with full skirts in sumptuous fabrics like silk, which add movement to your every gesture. When you’re in trousers or Capri pants, counteract the less glamorous look with a top that demands attention. Go for soft fabrics in eye-catching colours, fl attering cuts, and with some kind of detail. Waist belts or ribbons slim the waistline and create that classic hourglass shape.

T he sixties were an incredibly special time in history, with major upheavals and paradigm shifts in attitudes around race, war, sex, gender roles, and consciousness that manifested themselves in revolutionary music, art and

Dance crazes were raging in the sixties, and everybody had to do the Stroll,

It was also a time of colour, freedom of individual expression and choice, and the birth of rock n roll! Dance crazes swept the world, Woodstock transformed the defi nition of a concert, automobiles became hotrods, and fashion shifted from feminine knee-length print dresses to bright and bold gogo dresses that barely skirted the bum! Even though the sixties were wild, there was an inherent innocence in their explorations, a return to simple but sorely needed principles of peace and love that was totally groovy.

Growing up at that time also kept your innocence, and kids had more freedom due to greater safety – they were also exposed to a lot that modern parents would have a heart attack over! The dangers and long-term effects of certain behaviours and substances were only discovered way after the fact, and in the meantime the kids of the sixties were exposed to mothers that smoked, drank, ate

Before the sixties, dresses were knee-length and ultra-feminine, hugging the waist and creating that hourglass silhouette. Then the gogo dress exploded onto the scene, and everything changed. Skirts became mini, the silhouette was a straight cut into the barely-there length, and the look was sexy, not genteel.

tuna and blue cheese, and took aspirin during pregnancy and then put to bed in cribs painted with lead-based paint! There was no such thing as childproof lids or locks on prescription drugs and cabinets, or seatbelts, airbags, or having to wear a helmet. They drank from the hose and shared soft drinks and straws. They ate real butter, full cream milk, and white bread without getting fat or developing eating disorders, and this was probably due to one essential factor: they played outside!

In fact, from the time they were let out of school, kids didn’t come home until supper! Parents knew only that they were “out”, had no way of reaching them, and only started to worry if they weren’t home by nightfall. They rode bikes, built go-karts, made up games with sticks and balls, knocked on doors around the neighbourhood to rally up their friends, and fell out of trees and broke bones without their parents fi ling lawsuits. They didn’t have Nintendo, Playstations, X-Boxes, iPads, cell phones, computers, or the Internet, but they didn’t need any of that to have fun. If they got in trouble with the cops, their parents sided with the cops! This generation produced an amazing crop of risk-takers and lateral thinkers that forged a new world through their innovations, inventions, and ideas.

The best medicine for children? The best medicine for children?LAUGHTER

An interesting new study shows laughter in children can activate parts of their brain which can improve their wellbeing and resilience. Most children naturally fi nd

opportunities to laugh, and it’s adults who too often push back on that. Some families grow up with plenty of joking around and humour so it comes naturally, however it’s not true with all families, and this makes it more diffi cult when facing severe hardships. The lesson here as a parent is to ensure you’re fi nding opportunities for encouraging humour with your child, and certainly not discouraging it.

Bright colours and patterns are visually appealing. They can infl uence moods and actions. Choose happy sunny colours for your children.

Where has kids’ love for the outdoors gone? From cell phones and social networks to video games and the Internet, kids just don’t play outside anymore. In fact, they don’t

Kids need to get outside, get some fresh air, and fi nd release for all that pent-up energy and frustration that they’ve been building up during their day. While safety is of course a concern, there are plenty of outdoor spaces around that are easy to keep an eye

Set the example by getting everyone out for a bicycle ride, a game of cricket, a hike in a nearby nature reserve, or getting the whole family to walk the dogs around the neighbourhood on a Sunday afternoon. Next thing you know, they’ll be the ones ignoring the X-Box so they can go climb a tree, or inviting their friends over to camp in the garden.

Theming It? Be CleverUnless you are prepared to redo it every year, character-type themes are usually a bad idea. You don’t want wall-to-wall Spongebob Squarepants, and neither will they in about, oh, a week. Stickers are an excellent way to bring in some interest, they peel right off. Don’t go all out on a dominant theme - it may look fabulous, but you cannot throw away every present they are given that doesn’t match. So keep it flexible - they want to share, they don’t want to share, it’s your son’s room, it’s your daughter’s room, it’s the spare room - remember that modern living is all about flux before you commit to that fitted daisy carpet.

Choose Furniture To LastChosen carefully, furniture bought now could last until you send them off to study. For major bits of furniture, like beds and wardrobes, steer clear of teeny versions they will outgrow in a couple of years. Go for a classic style, and buy sturdy, quality items that have some hope of withstanding the frankly improper use your children will subject them to.

Invest In Hidden StorageSome beds come with storage space under them.

Keep Them AsleepChildren of this age group are still prone to the ‘get up at dawn’

routine, so get a serious blackout solution at the window if you value your sleep.

Get Them In The Mood For BedA dimmer switch is a good idea for getting the mood right for bedtime.

Fit Practical FlooringYou want something hardwearing and stain proof.

Don’t Forget - Safety First Fit window locks, remove locks on doors, avoid large lockable trunks, put covers on electrical sockets, avoid trailing electrical leads, and screw heavy furniture to the wall.

We have fantastic bed linen for kids in cool designs and colours that won’t cost much to replace a year or three down the line. If you keep your furniture and decor neutral, you can change your theme by just changing their linen.

Too cool by the pool

BASIC SWIMMING POOL SAFETY TIPSNever allow your youngster to swim alone without any adult supervision. It is quite common to develop a cramp underwater, or for accidents (like hitting your head while diving, for example) to occur. It is paramount that there should be persons around to help in such situations.

Do not allow children with no knowledge of swimming in or around the pool. For good pool safety, make sure that all kids above the age of 4 attend a certifi ed swimming class, or at least learn basic fl otation techniques and life saving techniques in case of accidents. Children younger than 4

Girls’ boardshorts are great for summer, keeping them covered up while they run around.

should always be accompanied by their parents in the pool.

Enclose your pool with high fences, which can be locked. Do not leave the pool open and accessible since children can fall inside. Keep your pool safe, and keep your kids away from the poolside.

Avoid leaving your kids alone even with small portable pools or water bodies like buckets, fountains, and barrels. There is always a danger of drowning, even in small bodies of water.

In the case of a backyard swimming pool, make sure that the cover of the pool is completely lifted over the pool. Do not partially open the pool. Also make sure that your child does not walk over the pool cover.

Spas and hot tubs must also be avoided, especially in the case of younger children who are susceptible to overheating.

For good pool safety, you can make sure that there is always a life saving fl otation device handy near the pool. Also, every parent should be conversant in basic CPR techniques in case of any accident.

Then last but not least, to ensure swimming pool safety, be observant. Watch what your kids are upto, and supervise their activities. Do not leave them alone.

Nivea Sun Moisturising Sun Spray is easy to apply on kids that hate standing still. Remember to re-apply when they come out of the water.

Flip fl op sandals come in all characters. There will be no moaning about wearing sandals. They will put them on with ease.
