A PON network is a Point to Multiple Points (P2MP) passive optical network.
A PON network consists of the Optical Line Terminal (OLT), Optical Network Unit (ONU), and Passive Optical Splitter (POS).
POS have many advantages :Few expensive optical modules , low failure rate and power consumption, easy deployment
and maintenance
Passive Optical Splitter
What is a Passive Optical Network?
12
Advantages:
• Longer transmission distance: Transmission over optical fibers reaches a maximum of 20 km transmission distance.
• Higher bandwidth: Downstream 2.5 Gbit/s and upstream 1.25 Gbit/s (the PMD layer) for each subscriber
• Optical split feature: The single optical fiber from the Central Office (CO) is split into multiple drop optical fibers to save the
resources.
• Gigabit-capable Passive Optical Networking (GPON) supports triple play service. It provides a full-service solution to solve the
bandwidth bottleneck of twisted pair access and to meet the requirements for high-bandwidth services, such as high-definition
television and live broadcasts. GPON is the best choice for triple play service.
• Complete GPON standards and high technology requirements

Why is GPON Preferred?
13
The GPON system uses Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) technology to implement bi-
directional transmission over a single fiber (a forced transmission mode).
Transmitted over a single optical fiber, to separate the transmitting and receiving signals of multiple
subscribers, the GPON system uses the following multiplexing technologies:
The downstream data streams use broadcast technology.
The upstream data streams use the Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) technology.
1,490 nm
1,310 nm
GPON Technology: Data Multiplexing
14
Broadcast mode: The length of any downstream GPON frame is fixed to 125 us and the frames are
broadcast to all Optical Network Units (ONUs). In this way, all ONUs can receive the same data. The
ONUs differentiate the frames by Gemport ID and filter the frames to receive their own data.
GPON Technology: Downstream Data
15
TDMA mode: The upstream GPON data is transmitted in TDMA mode. The uplink is divided into different time
slots, which are allocated to each ONU according to the upstream bandwidth map field in the downstream
frames. Hence, all ONUs can transmit their own data based on a specific sequence with no conflict for
competing timeslots.

Device Wiring
LSW cost most, FTTB cost fewer than LSW by 30%,which is the economical solution. In summary, FTTX
has advantage over LSW on expenses.
It can be inferred that the expenses of LSW increase more quickly than that of FTTB, as the wiring cost
of LSW solution is higher than that of PON

Provide broadband and POTS voice service to small-scale enterprises (< 50 people) by direct connection with voice function ONU.
For average enterprises (< 300 people), use a PBX for
voice service. Internet services go through the GE port on
ONU, connecting an enterprise’s internal router or switch.
For large enterprises (> 300 people), suggest using
dedicated lines.GE ports on OLT connect directly to
enterprise egress routers.
