1 Customer Challenges

As a new-generation broadband passive optical access standard, the Gigabit-capable Passive Optical Network (GPON) uses a point-to-multipoint topology structure and provides integrated voice, video, and data services. Thanks to its compelling features, such as large bandwidth, high efficiency, and wide coverage, GPON has been applied in a broad assortment of fields, including Safe City, hotel, transport, healthcare, and education.

Due to technical and device complexity, however, GPON fault monitoring is a headache to a majority of operation and maintenance (O&M) personnel. To figure out the causes that hinder O&M efficiency, we have surveyed the locations where faults occurred in an enterprise, as shown in Figure 1-1.

Based on the statistical results, the monitor complexities include:

Diverse and geographically dispersed monitoring sitesMonitoring sites include outdoor terminals (such as cameras on streets), Optical Network Units (ONUs), indoor Optical Line Terminals (OLTs), as well as distributed optical fibers and network cables. It is difficult for O&M personnel to quickly locate faults when a fault occurred.

Based on a point-to-multipoint topology structure, GPON uses numerous outdoor devices scattered on streets or in residential communities. In the event of a fault, O&M personnel have to arrive at the scene and locate the fault, which dramatically compromises fault location efficiency.

Difficult to collect information about faulty devicesIt is difficult to collect information about faulty devices using the traditional approach. For example, many ONUs under a GPON port are faulty. To locate the fault, O&M personnel have to collect fault information by running numerous commands, and perform data analysis. The traditional approach poses high skill requirements and increases O&M costs.

2 Huawei Solution

2.1 Multi-Point Network Fault Monitoring2.1.1 Monitoring Site Analysis

Monitoring sites can be classified into five categories, as shown in Figure 1-2.

2.1.2 Monitoring Mode SelectionTable 1-1 lists monitoring and fault location modes used by eSight.

1 Terminal communication status monitoring

Monitor the ONU Ethernet port status.

If the port status is normal, the terminal is faulty. If the port status is abnormal, the ONU or ONU port is faulty.

2 ONU monitoring (ONU faults primarily include power off and board faults)

1. Monitor the ONU running status.

2. Monitor the port running status (board faults will be reflected by ports).

If the ONU is offline, check the cause. If ports under the same board are abnormal, check whether the board is faulty. If a port under a board is abnormal, the port is faulty.

3 Line monitoring 1. Monitor the working environment of optical modules.

2. Monitor line quality.3. Monitor the OLT

UNI port status.

Based on collected performance data about optical modules and lines, determine whether an optical module or line is faulty. Determine whether the OLT UNI port is normal by checking the port status.

4 OLT monitoring (OLT faults primarily include board faults)

Monitor the OLT port status.

Check the status information in the port list and locate the fault.

5 OLT upstream port monitoring

Monitor traffic information about links.

Check bandwidth usage or packet loss.

2.1.3 Monitoring Mode ComparisonTake an ONU offline fault as an example. Figure 1-3 compares the processes of a traditional approach and eSight-based approach.

With the traditional approach, O&M personnel need to memorize massive device query commands, which is energy-consuming and inefficient and increases training costs. However, with eSight, O&M personnel only need to query causes in offline alarms without memorizing numerous and complex commands, which reduces O&M costs while improving efficiency.

2.2 Fault Information Acquisition2.2.1 Alarm Information Reporting

eSight enables GPON devices to report alarms actively. eSight displays received alarms in the alarm list in a centralized manner. Based on provided alarm names, sources, and locations, O&M personnel can determine fault types and locations of faulty devices on the network. O&M personnel can click an alarm source link to obtain device details through the object manager, or obtain other location information through other buttons in the Operation column.

2.2.2 Unified Resource ManagementeSight allows O&M personnel to manage GPON devices by category, including OLTs, optical splitters, ONUs, and terminals. O&M personnel can obtain the status of faulty devices from resource lists.

Take the ONU resource list as an example. Based on alarm location information carried in alarms, O&M personnel can check the ONU status In addition, O&M personnel can click a name link to the ONU manager and check details about the ONU. O&M personnel can analyze fault causes based on alarms, ONU status, upstream port status, and port configuration.

2.2.3 Health Status AssessmenteSight provides health status assessment for OLTs (such as Huawei MA5600T). eSight analyzes availability (inaccessibility rate and port fault rate), alarms, and performance data to calculate the health score. Health calculation involves OLT information and service information carried by OLTs, including ONU performance and alarm data. O&M personnel can customize the alarm and performance weight and calculation methods in health calculation.

When detecting that the health score is low, O&M personnel can click the details link to check items to be optimized, as shown in the following figure. O&M personnel can choose to enable immediate optimization or not, click the link to view alarm details, and rectify the faults.

2.2.4 Object ManagerThe object manager displays the following information about devices: basic information, performance, port, ONU, and ONU port.

eSight provides the object manager to keep O&M personnel abreast of device details. In the Basic Information area, O&M personnel can learn about the device version, model, status, and location.

In the KPI area, O&M personnel can view their most concerned KPI data, including: average CPU usage, average memory usage, response time, daily inaccessibility rate, as well as port and ONU status statistics. If the CPU usage is too high or port is abnormal, O&M personnel only need to check the KPI area.

With the port and ONU lists, O&M personnel can learn about service information carried by devices. O&M personnel can monitor the overall status of lines through the GPON UNI port status, LOFI alarm quantity, number of blocks uncorrected by the upstream FEC, number of BIP error frames, and upstream and downstream rates. In this case, O&M personnel can easily determine the ONU status.

In combination with the GPON UNI port and ONU tables, O&M personnel can locate faults in a more proper manner. For example, if all ONUs under a GPON port are offline, the port is probably faulty. O&M personnel can check the port running status, or whether alarms are generated on the port.

In the Neighbor area, O&M personnel can view end-to-end device and port information, and monitor upstream OLT ports and link traffic, including high bandwidth usage or packet loss caused by a capacity expansion.

3 Conclusion

eSight provides unified resource management for O&M personnel to obtain associated information among fault points. eSight monitors service information, including overview, alarm, performance, and health, to help O&M personnel learn about the GPON running status and layout in a comprehensive manner, facilitating fault location and rectification.
